It might help to know that a whole range of HP laser printers used the very
same cartridge. Like the HP Laserthing IIIp and 2100, which are *years*
apart. This may extend your search area to PC suppliers as well.

I doubt that. The spongy black roller is there for paper transport. The
brick-red rollers (one hard, one soft) on the fuser assembly are used to
press the freshly baked ink onto the paper. Both have wipers, that are held
against these roller with springs and screws. You might want to check them.

But then again, a new cartridge might help. I can't say.

good luck,

Thanks, Mart. It actually reduced the greyness of the page, but didn't get
rid of it. It's nice to know that the slider control is there though. :)

I guess I have to keep a lookout for a new toner cartridge, like the
fixyourownprinter.com guy (Moe) suggested. Funny that they don't sell them.

FWIW, the fuser tested okay with an ohm meter when it cooled down. I still
suspect the spongy black roller below the fuser assembly because is keeps
getting filled with toner dust. Someone pointed out (JEff G.?, Greg E.?)
that they might need replacing.

I got this at a bargain and just can't afford to pour anymore into it unless
I get another one to play with. Thank you all for your help.

Open the engine room door; it should be located just above the toner cartridge.

So it appears that possibly the fuser cleaner has
taken a holiday. (I hear the south of France or
Afghanistan is nice this time of year.) ;-)

There may be a weak or otherwise malfunctioning corona
wire somewhere in there.

The print cartridge has a wiper blade to scrape off
unused or excess toner from the OPC drum. There's
another roller that's heated and mashes the toner
onto the paper permanently. That's the fuser. The
fuser has a fuser cleaner. That's basically a bit
of heat resistant fuzz glued to a bit of plastic
and held against the fuser roller. Most of them in
older printers and copiers were soaked in a silicone
oil. Eventually the fuser cleaner gets clogged with
toner and/or the oil gets used up so you have
to replace the thing. Generally you should replace
the fuser cleaner at each toner change or refill.

It is possible to get a rebuilt print drum cartridge
or in some cases you can replace just the wiper
blade if the OPC drum and other parts are OK. It
depends on how the thing comes apart and whether or
not you need special tools to avoid damage while
taking it apart.

The fuser cleaner is most often easily user
replaceable, generally under a lid or a flip up
panel accessible after the printer or copier is
opened up. Look for a HOT warning lable. Under
there lurks the fuser. :)

Re: Personal LWntr printing on LC475, CCII

2002-04-08 Thread Teuila & Bertie Hall

Well, I got it apart and cleaned the roller pickle and Jeff were talking
about. It was coated with toner dust. I first wiped it off with a soft cloth
(don't have a brush and couldn't find one inside the printer). Reassembled
it and printed a page.

The page showed marked improvement, but when I printed more pages it got
worse and worse, until it was almost like the original problem. I removed
the roller again and WASHED it in the sink. Dried it thoroughly and
reinstalled it. Same results as before. First page only about 30% grey then
it got worse until it looked 95% grey.

I checked the fuser assembly according to the directions at
http://fixyourownprinter.com/fuserlx.html

and found the Ohm values on the left side to be within range (3.8 ohms) but
the right side measured 105k ohms. It's supposed to be 180-290k ohms. I used
2 different mulitmeters just to be sure (yeah, i found another cheap
multimeter 'cause I'm not exactly _sure_ of what I'm doing; one's
autoranging the other isn't :) )..

anyway, the webpage just says if the left side is in range the lamp is okay,
but says nothing about the other values on the right side if they are _out_
of range. I've sent them an email and am awaiting a reply.

right now we may have narrowed it down to the fuser assembly (right side
values out of range) or the fuser roller needs to be replaced, OR BOTH.

as usual, any comments, suggestions or advice are gratefully welcome.

The brush Jeff is referring to is separate from the toner in the
LaserWriter II series. It actually cleans the fuser roller, not the toner
roller. Not sure how the PLW NTR is set up, but it's probably similar.
Look for a brush inside there somewhere, possibly consulting the service

Most cartridges come with a felt "brush" which is a part of the assembly,
and is used to wipe the roller clean of excess toner. If this is worn, it
will cause a grey cast to any page you print.

There are also other causes, but go with this first.

Personal LWntr printing on LC475, CCII

2002-04-07 Thread Teuila & Bertie Hall

First of all, if this is the wrong list to post a printing problem to,
please email directly where I should go. I've been to fixyourownprinter.com
with no help. No one there answers my posts.

A used Personal LaserWriter NTR that I just got will print okay from
LC475/OS8.1 and Color Classic with 550 board/OS7.5.5. Software driver is
Laserwriter 8.

The problem is that all pages are dark, not real dark, but the page is sort
of grey. I tried the LW utility to adjust it but all the options are shaded
out. The switch setting on the back is set to "0". I am using a regular
printer cable connecting directly from either of the two macs' printer ports
with no problem. Also, I removed the toner cartridge and carefully wiped off
the toner "dust" on the green roller. Didn't help. Same output: grey page
with printed file/document. I have printed about 40 pages with no
improvement. The LW utility says the page count is 8717.

Don't know when the cartridge was changed last, and I don't have a
replacement one to try.
Anyone had any experience with this model printing off of an LC475 or CC550
Mac (straining to keep this on topic)? Any comments or suggestions are
greatly appreciated.

Thanks again and God bless this list. You guys are great!
