I find it, said politely, amusing that you would consider it complete
stupidity to re-title a clearly off topic reply to a thread. It is a
courtesy to the readers to re-title a thread that has deviated from the
initial topic.

What has netiquete got to do with the original LC discussion? Yes, nothing.

Thank you

Dave

Starting a new subject line and quoting 4 full emails and footers from a
continuing thread is nothing short of complete stupidity really.

In truth the stupidest things I read on these lists are my own posts. :)
My problem is one of reasons listed earlier and one of the reasons
bottom posting is prefered. Top posts can be very untidy if the sender
is lazy, no reason for editing gives us all this:

 Ok.
I do apologize for my lack of tact earlier.

This is how LEM would like you to reply. The onus is on the poster to
edit the previous post above thus removing the footer and hopefully
unnecessary clutter. I guess this should work with everything that can
access email, even gmail, oh look my account has been a yahoo account
 for years.
Please consider the list covers everyone, some folk use ontopic macs as
their internet machines. These folk like the traffic but not the
repeated content. They may also have limited net access or slow
connections, it is a mac68k list.

Your suggestion Jeff should unsub if offended by the extra text rubs me
 the wrong way.

No you haven't, its plain to see and for the second time nobody gives a
ship where you post, its your lack of editing thats the problem, have I
been typing that bit to fast for you to understand?

rubbed the wrong way about telling someone to unsub because they dont

The list as a whole would do well to ignore your posts. Actually the
nanny or listmom should have called this by now.
Post wherever you like and to anyone taking the list in digest form
stiff ship if you have to download several times the volume. Samual
doesn't care and cant be shown. If you have a limited dailup plan, stiff
again, just unsub or deal with it. There is no difference between the
many LEM list or the macs they cover. No thank you to the netiquette
guidelines, I can neither check my clients reply preferences or alter
the way I work, nor can I be bothered to edit manually because - lazy?

Quoting sparingly does require manual work, since most email programs
automatically quote the original message in replies. But failing to
edit the original wastes everyone's time and bandwidth.

I find it amazing some folks fail to understand the quote above,
regardless of where you start the reply.

Top Posting Discussion, Was: Re: Broken LC

2005-08-20 Thread Dave Ricker
Well, looking at this top posting thing here's my $.02. I find it annoying in
some forums/usenet to have to scroll EVERY (well, almost) message down to see if
there is anything of interest in a posting, often it's something like Yeah I
agree, just not worth it.

If there was a compelling reason to bottom post, the mail apps would open the
message at the bottom. If I'm following a thread message by message I don't
need
to start reading at the first post of each message to follow the discussion.

Oh, and then there's the issue of moving a topic away from the subject line
without amending it.

Well, I guess we're all opinionated, that's mine.

The footers are spam doesn't work for me.
If you use webmail for list access, learn how to use it.
Reply from the bottom and see how you go.

ok... with ya now... still... leaving a HDD running for a week
shouldnt have killed it... if it did then it was on the verge of death
anyhow...

 2:56am up 26 days, 4:40, 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 (its
an x86 machine but there is an apple branded IDE drive in there that
hasnt spun down at any time during that 26 days... wish i had a ups..
i could brag about my servers uptime even more :P )

question; booting from the external drive with an internal drive
installed can the OS see the internal drive? (or will it not allow you
to do this?... if not boot from floppy and see if it sees the internal
drive...) if it cant see the internal drive at all then just boot
from the external drive and consider the machine a partial loss... if
it can see the drive then reformat it and reinstall the os... see if
it'll boot then...

humor me for a moment on this one; put a multiconnector scsi cable
inside with a terminator attached and see what it does (the
original drive the LC used may have a specific built-in termination
that the other drive you are trying to use doesnt have... or it maybe
the opposite... the original drive didnt have termination but the new
one does and there is also termination on the motherboard... see if
there is a way to enable/disable the one on the motherboard if it
exists... scsi is a wily beast...)

I REMOVED the internal drive from the LC III, then I put it into an
external SCSI box. I connected the SCSI box to my LC 520. (I wanted
to copy files form one drive to the other). I turned OFF the LC 520,

Hopefully that is clear... I'm not sure how else to say it.

Now, that was left on ALL WEEK, causing that drive to die. Now, the

Only Flat Earth and Intelligent Design believers top post and fail to
snip all the extraneous trailing text such as the list footers, John.

Bottom posting was the custom on UseNet and BBS fora for years
(decades?) before some idiot at MS wrote a mail client that defaulted
to top posting. The default of the software does not define the
human custom.

Unfortunately, there are so many new users overwhelming the old and
who have no guidance except their client defaults, that top posting
is now all too common.

But as the FAQ says, most top posters fail to clip extraneous text,
which is rude and inconsiderate. Geeze. If you're going to top
post, at least edit your quoted text. The lists are getting
unreadable for all the messages that include all the text from the
previous three messages plus six copies of the list footer quoted and
requoted, just so they can add their thirty words of non-wisdom at
the top.

Re: Broken LC

2005-08-19 Thread Robert Patterson

Sorry, I don't agree. I see it as a personal preference only. In most
mailing lists, you see it equally both ways. And obviously, there is no
way to enforce it. Even the list-owner here has only suggested it.

I prefer top-posting, because I really hate scrolling through stuff I've
read before, and like most list'ers, I remember what has come before.

I've always had the feeling that determined advocates for bottom-posting
thought that it might deter people from leaving all the clutter from
previous posts and footers at the bottom of each follow-up message. :-)
Sorry, doesn't help. People who want to be lazy will continue to do so.

Rob

It is customary to post on the bottom. But the top poster just keep
proliferating, probably in part because MS email clients top post by
default.

option-apple-p-r is indeed the right sequence but only on System 7

top posting fixed?

ok.. confused... how would leaving an external harddrive turned on
keep the internal turned on... arent the power and data cables
seperate?? if the internal was left spinning (powered) by the power
supply in the external box and the scsi bus on this comp still works i
would check the power cable...

or... is it the external that is damaged from being left on for a
week? (that -still- shouldnt have been a problem... the drive would
have just sat idle)

either you arent wording this correctly or i have completely jumped
the tracks on this one cos i am lost...

Re: Broken LC

2005-08-18 Thread Kyle Koerner
Ah, sorry about the top-posting thing, i thought that it was
customary to post on the bottom (we had a big debate on this in the
iMac LEM list). Anyway, the deal with the hard drive is as follows.
I REMOVED the internal drive from the LC III, then I put it into an
external SCSI box. I connected the SCSI box to my LC 520. (I wanted
to copy files form one drive to the other). I turned OFF the LC 520,
but forgot to turn off the SCSI box that contained the LC III's
INTERNAL hard drive.

Hopefully that is clear... I'm not sure how else to say it.

Now, that was left on ALL WEEK, causing that drive to die. Now, the
LC III won't boot, even with another hard drive on the internal SCSI
cable. With an external SCSI drive, it boots fine.
