Re: network admin help needed
all except one. This one has any keyboard sequence disabled on bootup. It doesn't seem to want to use a floppy, as it spits them out. I can't get to the finder without using an admin password (which I don't have). I suspect this may have been the server. Have you thought about asking the youth camp for the password? I'm sure if you told them of your situation, they would comply. Also, recently a friend of mine needed to work on a mutual friends PC. The PC asked for a password.. Lo and be-hold, the password was the same as the login name. Is there any way to get past this network login? I've read that reinstalling the disk drivers will overcome the network admin stuff, but I don't think I can try that with this one, given that it won't read floppies until logged in. Am I stuck just reinstalling the OS? Or will I completely have to reformat the drive to clear it? Right now, I'd just like to find out how much RAM how large a HD it has. I can't even get that far with it. Out of the 10, this is the only one you are having problems with? If so, why don't you just pull the RAM, and install it in another to find out how much it is. Also, isn't there any writings on the HD? Again, if this is the only computer with a problem, than HD's are cheaply replaceable. If there are writings, what are they? Maybe you can research it through a search engine? TIA Teri Pittman [EMAIL PROTECTED] New and improved site: http://www.xws.com/terispage/ -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Well, I actually got these through a guy who got them from who-knows-where. I can check with him, but I'm figuring worse case scenario. Also, recently a friend of mine needed to work on a mutual friends PC. The PC asked for a password.. Lo and be-hold, the password was the same as the login name. Tried all the quick, logical passwords I could think of. At work, we normally set these up with things like train or trainer for passwords. If this was actually the server, they'd probably have a less obvious password. Out of the 10, this is the only one you are having problems with? If so, why don't you just pull the RAM, and install it in another to find out how much it is. I have one totally dead one, two with the ? floppy displayed at startup. The rest seem to boot up okay. They've pulled the RAM out of them, so I'll need to put in more RAM before I hand them out. Couple have 1GB hard drives, which is nice. They make great CD players *grin*! Also, isn't there any writings on the HD? Again, if this is the only computer with a problem, than HD's are cheaply replaceable. If there are writings, what are they? Maybe you can research it through a search engine? Yep, I'll take a look at that next. I have an external drive I could use to set up a ghost image for these machines. That's the plan anyway. I'm pulling in the 7.5.3 disks today and will probably take it from there. Would be nice to see what's on that drive, but reformatting it will be okay too. Thanks for the advice. The LC 520 is pretty much an all in one version of the LC III. They can be upgraded to an LC 550 (boost up to 33Mhz from 25Mhz) or an LC 575 (with an 040 CPU) simply by swapping in the different logic boards. Do your 520s have caddy or tray load CD-ROM drives? Manual or auto inject floppy drives? If the one has At-Ease installed, you may be able to bypass it by changing the SCSI ID and connecting it to another Mac so it's not the boot drive. Also try disconnecting the drive and doing a PRAM zap then boot from a floppy so you can have a look at how much RAM it has. Like the LC III and Performa 460/LC III+, the LC 520 and LC 550 have 4 megs RAM built in and one 72pin SIMM slot. Normally the biggest SIMM you can fit is 32megs, but MicroMac (and possibly others) make (way overpriced) SIMMs for them that go up to 128meg. = http://www.junkscience.com All the Junk that's fit to Debunk! __ Do You Yahoo!? Do your 520s have caddy or tray load CD-ROM drives? Manual or auto inject floppy drives? Caddy CD with auto eject floppies. If the one has At-Ease installed, you may be able to bypass it by changing the SCSI ID and connecting it to another Mac so it's not the boot drive. Also try disconnecting the drive and doing a PRAM zap then boot from a floppy so you can have a look at how much RAM it has. I pulled the drive out and it's a 730 MB Quantum Lightning drive. Looks like you set the SCSI id by changing the jumper settings. Like most jumpers, it's not altogether clear which jumper to change (although it does have the different combinations on the drive.) It plugs into the drive cable using a slot type (rather than a pin type). I'm not sure I can find a cable that will plug into it. I thought I might be able to change the jumper settings to a different setting and use an external as a master boot. I might be able to get into it that way. I suspect this is a 16MB RAM chip, as that is what is in the other machine they left the RAM in. I do think I have At Ease on one of the machines. I'll take a look at that and at doing a PRAM zap. (I can't do one with the drive in, since it has the keyboard disabled on boot.) If all else fails, I'll just do a clean install and be done with it. That is simply an adaptor plugged onto the SCSI and power connectors of the drive. A bit of careful prying will have it off there. Most drives use a standardized placement of the SCSI and power connectors so the adaptor will fit other drives. = http://www.junkscience.com All the Junk that's fit to Debunk! __ Do You Yahoo!? You'd be better off getting a DB25M to CEN50M SCSI cable then finding an external SCSI case with the normal internal SCSI and power connections.
