Whining Drives

2002-07-31 Thread Visionary

Hi folks:

Does anyone have experience with Seagate ST15150N drives? Is it "normal" for
them to be incredibly noisy in a "whiney" sort of way? I'm not complaining
because these came in a two-drive SCSI enclosure that I thought to contain
no working drives whatsoever. But these two drives both seem to work. They
are just so noisy, I can't imagine anyone working in a room with them and it
makes me wonder whether I should even trust data on them.

Never had one myself, but a high-pitched whine wouldn't surprise me coming from
that drive, because the Barracudas are notoriously fast and high-end :) When
you spin the platters that fast, some whining is bound to happen.

Sorta like an F-15 coming up from a cold start. It can
get annoying. It's on a shelf at the moment . . .

It is an obscenely loud drive, yes. It is also faster than greased lightning
and generates enough heat to contribute to global warning. Keep it well
ventilated. The ST15150N is a real hot-rod in both speed and temperature.

This is interesting because I plan on putting 3 Seagate Cheetah LVD drives
in a G4-upgraded 9600 soon. Noise output is a consideration as the Mac will
be a ProTools Audio machine but it can be put into a cupboard or isolated
somehow. Internal heat has me worried though. With the original Fast SCSI
drive on the top at the back, 2 Cheetahs in the 2 spare drive bays and the
3rd on the bottom of the case, with a G4 card in there too I'm afraid the
case will melt! Or at least the expensive drives will cook themslves. Should
I rig up some ventilation holes and a fan on one of the spare drive bay
covers? (or can you buy something pre-made for exactly this purpose?).

Cheers, Ben.

I dunno, but whatever it is, I bet the folks over at PCI-Powermacs would love
to hear about it...

I've got two of 'em in my G4 and they do love to whine. As William
has noted, they do have the note of jet engines winding up.

Re: Whining Drives

2002-08-01 Thread Gregg Eshelman

Dry bearings. Dismantling a drive to drip a tiny
amount of sewing machine oil on the bearings is
a tricky proposition. Getting the thing back together
is $^!@$@$ near impossible. :P

I have an old Seagate 320meg SCSI that I took apart,
got both bearings oiled but I couldn't get the heads
back between the discs so I decided to chuck it.
Was only doing it to see if I could. Fortunately
SCSI drives can be low level formatted so it shouldn't
matter if all the platters are taken off the spindle
and replaced any which way, right? :) I even kept
the thing dust and fingerprint free. I've had the
lids off several older drives, even with them running,
without "killing" them. Just never have gotten
one more apart than that _and_ back together. ;)
