I do not donate ANY time that is business related so... yes I feel I should
be paid for the time my employees are packing items... I sure have to pay
them!
Why would I sell something for $9.00 and eat $2.00 in labor, $1.00 for box,
$.50 for packing material, and $6.00 to $10.00 UPS fees? I wouldn't stay in
business if I did that!

eBay PROHIBTS marking the price of your item in any way, either in shipping
or in the price iteslf, to cover the cost of the auction. The same goes for
Paypal, or for credit cards in general. There are several states that have
LAWS against this.

It seems to me that the price of shipping a collectable vintage mac
is pretty much on topic. I myself always aim at buying the larger

Just accept the damned postage and write it off as the people on earth
always trying to screw you over. I've spent £75 this month on Mac eBay and
it's come to nearly double that amount in Postage - living in the UK you
just have to put up with it, because there's no other way of getting these
items.

I paid £1 ($1.79?) for an AIO, and it was £20 ($35.80) for postage - funded
from my Saturday job.

Right. And you are the ultimate cash control-valve. You control costs:
cheaper packing materials, free boxes, free packing peanuts or cheapest
possible by scrounging, using plastic grocery bags as padding, lowest
shipping fee, free pickupthere's where I started this thread.a

Understand that your time spent packing and listing is considered
essentially donated time because you can't expense a dollar-per-hour figure
against that and expect to sell THAT to customers in this end of the game,
you have to know what "smart-buys" are by what you can get and add-in the

I'm holding my breath waiting for a nanny to step in and squash this

Meanwhile, I wouldn't let a four year old pack anything for me. I use a
combo of materials that has resulted in a no-break shipping record for about
a year.

And the thing about the $100 item versus the 100 $1 things?

It takes longer to sell a $100 thing, and there's a larger chance that
one nitpicking buyer will crash the deal when he/she discovers a smudge on
the faceplate or something or other. With the $1 things there's a
far lighter chance of buyer remorse. Those buyers are grateful to get their
item.

While I do understand that Ebayers need to make money too, and I do pack stuff for
shipping in the course of my job's duties, I think that a $10 shipping charge on a
monitor adapter is pretty lame. I got 8 adapters shipped to my house from Arizona for
$5.62US.

A lot of Ebayers use the shipping cost as a source of revenue, and they use a very low
starting bid to get their items listed first in the 'lowest price' search. I'm guilty
of using it, and I'm sure everyone else does, too. But I don't appreciate finding
something for a $1 and then getting ripped on shipping. Very high shipping charges is
also a great way to rip off someone who's not familiar with Ebay, too.

Well, that's my $.02 worth. Anyone who sells on Ebay, please don't take offense. I'm
just saying that some people practice business this way. BTW, if I add shipping and
the auction bid and it's reasonable, I'll bid anyway. That's how I got my LCIII and
ended up here, after all :)

Great points, all of them! You are quite correct in that we DO need to be
reasonable. I too save every scrap of packing material, and even cut down
boxes for a custom fit. This is simply good business!
Shredded paper is great for a lot of things too, but some things I wouldnt
use it for
most of the time I include shipping insurance in the shipping fee to protect
the purchaser and myself, but when I do this I tell them so...
I try to keep cost of shipping to a minimum, after all I don't like paying
for it myself.
The moral to all this is Reasonable Shipping Charges from sellers, and
buyers to realize when someone is ripping them off and avoid it.
I don't like to bid on something that I cannot at least calculate the
shipping for ahead of time!

Great to see a fellow eBayer that is part of the solution!!! Glad you are
there!

Gary,

Many of us are aware of the costs so don't paint everyone with the same brush.
Being an ebay seller/buyer myself I try to recycle all my boxes. I cut the tape
and fold them down. This takes up much less space than nesting them. All foam,
anti-static bags, peanuts and bubble wrap is also saved and re-used. No, I am not
a 'tree hugger', I am just practical. Fortunately I have the space to store these
reusable packing materials. Also, I am aware that some people don't have the
space to do so, or don't ship often enough for this to be practical for them. As
for packing material not growing on trees, I have to disagree. I use shredded
paper for some of my packing needs. Said paper does grow on trees :-) All that
having been said, a lot of my packing supplies are free, but not always. There
are times that I have to buy supplies, and when I do I try to buy materials at
reasonable prices. If you are going to Staples or Uhaul to by your bubble wrap
and boxes you are not being a very wise businessman.

And yes, as you stated, there ARE some people who overcharge on shipping. But, if
you are taken by one of these people, it really is your own fault for not checking
on the shipping charge before placing your bid. If the shipping cost are more
than you are willing to pay then simply don't bid on that item. You can only be
taken advantage of if you allow someone to do it.

I don't think ebay sellers should eat the shipping costs, I just think they should
be fair. They should not try and make a profit off the packing materials. I also
think sellers/shippers need to understand that when someone is charged for
packing, they should get their moneys worth. I have never had any item I packed
damaged in shipping except for one guitar that UPS drove a fork life fork
through. Hey, you can't anticipate everything, but packing something well doesn't
take that much time or intelligence. I will admit that I have spent several days
packing a weeks worth of ebay and swap list sales. Some things take more time and
care than others simply because they can not be replaced.

Also, I must say that I can only remember ever receiving a poor packing job from
only two lem swap list members (you know who you are). And that's not bad
considering how many of you have made multiple sales to me over the years.

Best Regards,

David A. Culler

It might be easier to sell 10 cheap items, but the profit is alot better on
the one expensive thing when you consider storage costs, packing material,
time involved in packing, the cut EBAY gets from each of the 10 listings,
time to take pictures and type up the listings, having to make a few trips
to the post office since not everybody pays the second the auction is over
(some pay with checks that have to clear which means a trip to the bank). I
would rather sell 1 item at $100 profit then 100 items at $1 profit (maybe
your an MBA or somthing).

Actually if your doing this full time you can get the shipper (ups/fedex) to
come to your buisiness to pick up the items (and get a better postal rate)
and at the same time charge for the handling to cover your time and
materials. Like anything else once you hit a certain quantity of items
shipped it becomes cheaper per item to process, but getting and keeping the
orders flowing is the hard part.

As far as finicky buyers go, it doesnt matter what they purchased or how
cheap it was, if it shows up broken or scratched up they will complain.
Insurance takes time and the buyer just gets his money back leaving a bad
taste in his mouth over the prolonged transaction. Do you think your going
to get a good feedback from somebody who thaught they had a good deal only
to find out their treasure was packed by a 4 year old and destroyed and had
to wait a week or 2 just to get their money back?

I am an eBay seller and the thing most buyers aren't aware of is the expense
involved just to list. Shipping is not cheap. If you don't think so try
checking with UPS and FED-X for charges to ship the weight in question, then
figure in the cost of the box (it isn't free) and the packing material
(doesn't grow on trees) and it becomes apparent they are not gouging you.
(there are exceptions) If you want something for nothing check the dump or
flea markets. We eBayers have to eat too, and if we ship and absorb the
cost we might as well give our stuff away. Would you work a couple of days
at your job and have your boss tell you that you had to pay for the
materials you used in making HIS product and shipping it? I think not!

The old addage, selling 10 cheap things is easier than trying to sell one
expensive thing, applies here. They can make their money on thinner margins.

Insurance is the tool used to prevent loss to the seller if an item arrives
damaged.

Short of a finicky buyer, who shouldn't have a leg to stand on anyway if the
price is right enough, you'd make out.

That is my general practice. You are right about the hassle of packing, and
it is a little bit vexing when people don't take in to account the time
and trouble involved.

Their strategy is to make it worth their time to package and ship cheap
computers. While a hobbyist probably doesnt mind the time to securely pack a
computer and take it to the post office once and a while when you sell in
bulk I bet it takes alot of your time each day to do it. Most people just
trying to get rid of old equipment on ebay charge actual shipping.

Well..

THAT strategy keeps them from selling their wares.

My limited experience with eBay tells me that some sellers use a strategy
of selling cheap, roping you in, and making up some juice on shipping. $30
will send a G3 AIO coast to coast.

Well what irked me was the seller wanted $30.00 shipping for a $9.99 item.
Many or most of them do. I want a special pricing section for computers
older than, say, 1997(?) vintage so as to dramatically reduce the shipping.

Sort of the Republican version of Recycling. Everybody benefits. Collectors,
Hobbyists, and of course, sellers.

I ship via FedEx Ground on heavy stuff and it is reasonable, though you
can't make sense out of shipping something like a 5400/180. I'm sending an
iMac from Dallas to Ohio today, and it will go for less than $20.

Who Out There Knows A Way........

2004-01-26 Thread J.S. Garrison
I spent the evening trolling through eBay. There were a few units I would
have bought, but the shipping has become such that it can be triple or more
the asking price of the unit offered.

Wonder if there can't be established a special shipping fee by all
commercial shippers that would be set so as to eliminate or at the very
least, reduce to a minimum, the price of shipping old computers as an
emphasis on cutting the number of them that end up in landfills.

Anyone out there have connections to agencies that might pick up on this and
implement it??
