I have the app, as well as the Fostex iPhone camera mount, and it works great
for the iPhone 4, and I assume, because the 4s is the same frame as the 4, that
it will work fine with the fostex hardware/app as well.

I shot a video with the fostex a while back using the fostex and iPhone4. its
on youtube, search for Philhalt, and the video is called "alabama banjo dream".

Hi,
But have i misunderstood anything here? As i understood it, Myway only saves
favorites or pois that you do yourself and then guides you to them, much as
Ariadne does or am i incorrect there? I got the feeling they were both quite
similar? Aren't you referring to IWay which was a gps solution discussed a

And if not, what is the point with MyWay when we have Navigon that works just
as well?

Voxer and handling users

2012-04-22 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi all,
I am using Voxer, a walkie talkie app for the IPhone and love it, however i
have run into an issue: I have a user who is a pain in the place where the sun
doesn't shine, and i don't ever want to talk with him, however since
subscription to voxer apparently means anyone can come in and you can't do a
thing about who's actually getting into your friends list i have a question. Is
there any way at all of blocking someone from my contacts? If that's not the
case i'm afraid i have to stop using Voxer, just because of this pest.
Any help deeply appreciated.

Re: gps for pedestrians, again, probably

2012-04-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Krister,

Ariadne tells you where you are, and if you select "Start monitoring", it
updates you on your position as you walk. It also tells you as you approach a
favourite, but it doesn't tell you how to get to that favourite.

MyWay Classic allows you to plan routes, including along paths that are not
shown on maps. So, if your route includes crossing a park or going through a
wood, MyWay will help you keep to your route, but you do have to plot it
yourself in the first place.

Navigon gives you turn-by-turn directions on routes shown on maps. It runs in
the background, making it possible to have Ariadne running in the foreground.

So, if the area you're moving to is properly mapped by Navigon, you won't need
MyWay.

I hope this is a clear explanation of the differences between these apps.

Cheers,

Anne

Just a thought, but is assisted touch turned on? This could severely

Hi,
It was very helpful, and more or less what i thought. I think though that in
the classic version of MyWay you can use OpenStreetMap to plan your routs, but
this, judging by the experience i had using Voxtrek is very iffy at best here

Thanks a lot for the explanation.

Flight Track, accessible?

Has anyone used Flight Track or
Flight Track pro?
They look very useful but I don't know if they are accessible.
At $5 and $10 respectively I would prefer to know in advance if possible.
Also, Flight Aware, which is free, is accessible and very useful and
informative.

Re: Editing in vokul

2012-04-22 Thread Zachary
Hi,

I just checked, and the "stop listening" command is not available when
composing a message. The stop listening command is only available when
you're not composing a message and when fitness mode is disabled.

I could add the "stop listening" command when composing a message if
this would be helpful. I'm concerned that it might become confusing,
though.

Re: Secret to finding barcodes

2012-04-22 Thread Nancy M
That is a great question!

The answer is actually based on how people shop and how stores are set
up to check things out.

The codes are designed for quick recognition by checkout equipment on
a point-of-sale (POS) system. On items that have a hangtag, the code
will be on one side of the tag and you will have to probably scan both
because that is that the checkout clerk would do (look at both sides
of the tag). Grocery checkout systems are designed for faster use
typically have one upwards-facing scanner and one forwards-facing
one.The code, is typically located either on the bottom of the
product or on the side away from the consumer "romance" labeling.
The clerk will orient the product so that the front of the product is
facing towards them and the opening surface is on the top. So the
code will be put on the bottom of the package or on the back (away
from the presentation "advertising" side). And it will be close to
the bottom because the scanners have a field of view this is about 6
inches tall.

On large items that the clerk has to do with a manual scanner (large
sacks of dogfood come to mind) this may not be true. The code in
this case is generally on a side seam but you probably have to scan
the entire bag. Happily those codes are large because they are
designed for a scan distance of about 24 inches.

The practical impact of this is that you will find the bar codes are
often located:

-- on boxes: away from the side that is opened. (on the bottom if it
is a top-opening item or possible on the lower side or back portion).
You can tell the back because there will be a lapped seam where the
box joins together and the back side is adjacent to it.
-- on cans with wrapped labels: adjacent to the seam where the labels
are joined
-- on jars with a single label: as far away from the center portion of
the label as possible.
-- on jars with two labels: on the back label (typically the front
label will be larger and may be more elaborate in -- shape; back
labels are typically smaller and simpler.)
-- on packages that are rectangular with small sides: on the longer
of the two small sides.

It can be difficult to locate codes on items that are round and that
have continuous wrap labels or where the bar code is part of the
printing, as on a soda can. In this case, it is typically necessary
to scan the entire label surface. We've found it convenient to do this
by bracing the bottom of the phone on a table and putting the can in
front of it. When the phone is scanning, it makes ticking noises. Each
time that there is a tick, turn the can 1/4 turn in front of the
camera. We have found that it rarely takes all four turns to get a
scan.

Orientation to the phone does not matter; Digit-Eyes does
omnidirectional scanning.

Particularly if you have the 4S or the iPad (devices which have the
best cameras) one of the things to do is to scan from fairly far away
and to get as much of the product into the field of vision of the
camera as possible.

We've got a tutorial on the topic here that may be useful

Re: Digit-eyes observations

2012-04-22 Thread Nancy M
I admit it -- I don't have my phone in a case; I have it in my
pocket. I did use a case for a while because of the issue with the
antenna but I didn't like the bulkiness of the case or the way it made
it hard to take the phone out of my pocket and decided that I'd just
rather learn to not put my fingers over the grooves where the antenna
is.

The iPhone is actually very robust. And the glass surface is very
tough. According to Jonathan Ive of Apple, speaking on the iPhone 4,
the glass is "comparable in strength to sapphire crystal but about
thirty times harder than plastic.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla_Glass

There is a site that I really like called 'Will it blend"
http://willitblend.com/
where they put various consumer items into a blender to see what
happens

On the iPhone (listed under "Don't try this at home"), they blend an
iPhone 4S and phone comes to pieces before the glass breaks

http://willitblend.com/videos/view/129

They also have an app for the iphone

(and yes, the site really does sell blenders)

I love this app. It gives you directions via a clock face. For example it
says 180 at 1:00 so you know how to adjust to get it back to 12:00.

RE: Secret to finding barcodes

2012-04-22 Thread Yolanda
The makers of digit eyes give wonderful clues to where to look in their help
section. Here are some things I learned form them and just using the app.

Cans and bottles, the barcode is usually at the bottm of the item. I turn
my iphone upside down remembering this changes where the camera is, and set
the iphone and can/bottle on the table with both vertical about 4 inches
apart. I slowly turn with the clicks, and I find it easily.

Boxes are usually on the bottom of large boxes. On smaller boxes like hot
chocolate mix are on the sides.
Packages like cheese and usually on the seam side towards the top right hand
side. You might have to turn the item around since knowing upper right is
relative to which way the cheese is turned.
Packages of cookies the barcode is usualy on the side.
Bags are on the seam side near the bottom.

The one that I worked at and could not find was dish soap for putting on our
grocery list, and my husband had to show me where, because it was kinda of
in the middle of the label on the back--as digiteye help said it would be on
the back label, but it was in a middlish place.

Hang in there I love this app, and bought it a while back and use it a lot.

Re: gps for pedestrians, again, probably

2012-04-22 Thread Eric Oyen
there has been an interface change since the last 2 updates on Navigon. the map
tab now has a main menu and doesn't display a usable map. I have had this
confirmed visually. there could be an invisible frame that neither I or my room
mates can access. prior to 2 updates ago, I could get a displayable map that I
could finger around and have nearby streets read to me. I cannot seem to do
that now.

I am going to try some other GPS apps but I am not holding out hope that I will
have any success.

as an aside, Sendero needs to release their full gps app. the lookaround
version is limited in such a fashion that it makes getting around difficult
(listing local points of interest and direction plus distance). I need
something that can give me turn-by-turn, read local streets around me, current
location, etc. so far, I have to use 5 different apps to get the functionality
that would be very nice in one single app.

for a few seconds for it to obtain a gps fix. Near the bottom of the
screen it will tell you if the map server is responding or something
similar to that affect. Around the center of the screen, maybe a tad bit
lower, is the current street information. If you tap that, it will tell
you the name of the street, the zip code, and the county if available. If
you swipe around, you will find the start monitoring button. Tap that and
Voice Over will automatically announce when you change directions and also
the street numbers where you are in. It will also announce when the street
changes. It is a very nice app for sure.

 I hope this helps.

there has been an interface change since the last 2 updates on Navigon. the
map tab now has a main menu and doesn't display a usable map. I have had
this confirmed visually. there could be an invisible frame that neither I or
my room mates can access. prior to 2 updates ago, I could get a displayable
map that I could finger around and have nearby streets read to me. I cannot
seem to do that now.

I am going to try some other GPS apps but I am not holding out hope that I
will have any success.

as an aside, Sendero needs to release their full gps app. the lookaround
version is limited in such a fashion that it makes getting around difficult
(listing local points of interest and direction plus distance). I need
something that can give me turn-by-turn, read local streets around me,
current location, etc. so far, I have to use 5 different apps to get the
functionality that would be very nice in one single app.

Hi,
It was very helpful, and more or less what i thought. I think though that in
the classic version of MyWay you can use OpenStreetMap to plan your routs,
but this, judging by the experience i had using Voxtrek is very iffy at best
here in Sweden.

Thanks a lot for the explanation.

22 apr 2012 kl. 11:38 skrev Anne Robertson:

Hello Krister,

Ariadne tells you where you are, and if you select "Start monitoring", it
updates you on your position as you walk. It also tells you as you
approach a favourite, but it doesn't tell you how to get to that
favourite.

MyWay Classic allows you to plan routes, including along paths that are
not shown on maps. So, if your route includes crossing a park or going
through a wood, MyWay will help you keep to your route, but you do have to
plot it yourself in the first place.

Navigon gives you turn-by-turn directions on routes shown on maps. It runs
in the background, making it possible to have Ariadne running in the
foreground.

So, if the area you're moving to is properly mapped by Navigon, you won't
need MyWay.

I hope this is a clear explanation of the differences between these apps.

Cheers,

Anne

question about syncing gmail with iPhone

2012-04-22 Thread alex wallis

Hi list,
I suspect this is probably a question that has come up lots on list, but
can't seem to find anything in the archives.
I use imap with my gmail account, I have this account checked for mmail
by both thunderbird and my iPhone.
My question is, how do I make the mail client on the iPhone download all
messages held on the gmail server?
at the moment, the client only seems to download new messages, and won't
download everything.
If I hit the get more messages button, it will download older mail, but
obviously this is a time consuming process, and I would rather get the
lot in one go. I seem to remember setting some value to download a
thousand messages, but the phone is still only grabbing new content.
Last question, is there a way to have thunderbird e mail synced
automatically to the iPhone?

Many thanks for any help,
Alex.

Hello,

Yes, all displays disconnect whenever the proximity sensor is activated
disabling the touch-screen. If you take the phone away from your face and it
switches to speakerphone, the braille display should reconnect. I suspect the
behaviour is the same with a bluetooth qwerty keyboard.

Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-22 Thread Eric Caron
hello listers,

If anyone out there is using a Canon MP 620 printer with Digit-Eyes I'd
love to find out if you had any difficulty getting this printer to print labels
correctly. I'll be checking in with Cannon and trying a different package of
labels soon, but in the meantime I can't seem to get the Avery 8160 labels to
work with this printer. they print just a bit too high. As this seems to be a
pretty common printer I'm wondering if anyone has all ready solved this
problem. Also if it is working well for you perhaps you could let me know
which labels you are using successfully with this printer?

I've been very impressed with the Digit-Eyes web site and the available
support. But, I have this one last step to conquer, before exploring all the
possibilities of this app.

Hi Mark, what I would do in this case is issue the spoken command "vokul

get Vokul going again.

Hey all,

Just a question about editing texts/statuses/e-mails in vokul. I try to
delete a character in the text field but everytime the app hears the
"delete" button, it delivers a prompt that asks me whether or not I want to
delete the current message. This is driving me insane and I was wondering if
anyone knows how to work around this.

Thanks in advance!

Re: need some help

2012-04-22 Thread Lois Butterfield
I just had to do that. They are having you set up new questions and
answers. You have to choose one question from each of the 3 sets and write
an answer. When you finish, there is an okay button.

I suppose if you ever have to change something again, they'll ask you one of
the questions.

Accessible stopwatch/timer app

2012-04-22 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hi everyone,

I am looking for a specific type of timer/stopwatch app. I know that
the native clock application has both but there's a specific feature I
need. I'm looking for something that will go off like a timmer but
repeatedly... so say if I set it for one minute intervals, it'd go off
continuously every minute until I stopped/shut down the app, instead
of just once after a minute like the timer in the clock app.

Any suggestions would be grately appreciated. I wanted to try some
interval training and though this would be a good way to be accurate
while doing it. :)

I love this app. It gives you directions via a clock face. For example it
says 180 at 1:00 so you know how to adjust to get it back to 12:00.

You have to go into the app switcher to do this.Press the home button twice
quickly. Once in there, three-finger swipe to the right once. It will be in
here where the music track buttons are.

Hope this helps,

Apple Store security questions - Was Re: need some help

2012-04-22 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Jim, I changed the subject so it's easier to find in case someone
else might be interested.

I'm afraid that you can't get around this. Everyone is being subjected
to setting up 3 security questions and answers. I had to do it a few
days ago when I was getting an app. The screens to do this are pretty
easy and so once you get past this, everything will be as it was before.

Hope this helps.

I can confirm this - have emailed Apple about it so they are aware. one way
around it is to use a head set, either bluetooth or wired, so when on a call
you can continue to use your braille display to drive the phone for taking

Re: anyone using a Wi-Fi Thermostat with an accessible app?

2012-04-22 Thread Frank Tom
Hello Brett,
My son has two of the new Nest thermostats. You can set the temperature
remotely and see what your house temperature is remotely, but that's about it.
When he comes to dinner tonight, I'll ask him if he has contacted the
manufacturer concernING VO ACCESSIBILITY.
SINCE the fellow who designed the thermostat is the same person who designed
the I Pod, it should be easy for him to make his app accessible.

Re: Voxer and handling users

2012-04-22 Thread Thomas Stivers
You cannot delete them all at once, but you can delete them one at a time. Open
each conversation and hit the speakerphone/handset on menu button in the top
right. A rather strange menu will open overlaying the screen. VO still detects
the screen behind the items if you are not exactly on top of one. The buttons
each show up as two controls because there is a picture and text below it which
voiceover treats separately. The delete chat button is the bottom right button
of the six buttons in the menu. There are two other buttons which say delete
chat as well, but the upper of these allows you to toggle alerts for an
individual conversation, and the other clears the screen of a conversation
window. I hope this is helpful.

Dear all.

There is an app for this comedy central show but as far as I could
understand from the description, it doesn't let you listen/watch the
shows.

The app keeps you updated with the schedule and various announcements. Is
there some way for me to listen to this show? I went through Hulu Plus
description and it doesn't mention comedy central shows. So, I understand
it

is of no help either.

If someone has managed to listen to this show, I will appreciate your
suggestions.

Thanks

I've noticed that the only time I can get anything to stream is if it's a
channel that states what is currently playing. All the National Geographics,
Sky this and that, ESPN, etc. that just announce the channel plays that intro
music for about 15 seconds and then nothing.
When I am able to get something to stream it seems to jump around and pause to
the point where it does affect the over all viewing. I'm pretty sure that it's
not my connection per say because I can stream netflix and YouTube with no
issues so who knows.
For 99 cents, I'm not too broken up about it, but it appears that the app has
some issues.
I'll keep on trying as long as Apple doesnt' pull it or something and hopefully
get better results.

2012-04-22 Thread Jim
I guess the subject is explanatory. Did I recently see something
about how to lock the iPhone/iPod touch in portrait mode, and if not,
does anybody know how?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Brailiant 40 disconnects from phone when on a call

2012-04-22 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

Just so everyone is aware, this is normal behaviour, not a bug. When the
proximity sensor activates, all input is blocked from the iPhone. The proximity
sensor disables the touch-screen. When the headphone is plugged in, or when the
iPhone is on speakerphone so away from your face, the touch-screen works and so
do the braille displays.

I've noticed that the only time I can get anything to stream is if it's a
channel that states what is currently playing. All the National Geographics,
Sky this and that, ESPN, etc. that just announce the channel plays that
intro music for about 15 seconds and then nothing.

When I am able to get something to stream it seems to jump around and pause
to the point where it does affect the over all viewing. I'm pretty sure that
it's not my connection per say because I can stream netflix and YouTube with
no issues so who knows.

For 99 cents, I'm not too broken up about it, but it appears that the app
has some issues.

I'll keep on trying as long as Apple doesnt' pull it or something and
hopefully get better results.

And even if it did, you would have to set it to pick up before the voicemail

Voice Actions - new version

2012-04-22 Thread Julia Cosgrove (Mrs)
Hello All

I was trying to find information regarding an app when I came across Voice
Actions which, from its description, sounds very good. It has recently been
updated and sounds very much like Siri. It can be used on iPhones 3GS, 4 and
4S but was originally developed for the Android. Wondering if anyone has tried
it?

Best wishes.

Ok, when the app is up touch the area at the bottom of the screen that shows

Hi,

I just turned this feature on in notifications. You can tell it to read preview
or the whole thing. I turned it to preview, and it only says the sender's name.

Hope this helps,

I tried "watching" Disney XD and the buffering was terrible over my wifi. It
would start buffering every few seconds and then just konked out entirely
eventually. Has anyone else had success with that channel?

I think it's only a matter of time before this app is taken down --
everything about it seems pretty shady.

updated and sounds very much like Siri. It can be used on iPhones 3GS, 4 and

I also have played with the app settings in the settings part of the phone.
There are accouple of things you can toggle on to help out with the app. You
can toggle the ability to make the app listen when it is opened. There is also
an accessibility toggle, I am not sure what this does, but the menus in the app
are read after you search or give the app a command.

The only channel I tried was ESPN. It took a long time to load, and finally

$.99, they reduced the price, I think they stole $.99 from us.

Re: Digit-Eyes and Canon MP620 printer

2012-04-22 Thread Christina
I had a similar problem. I was using safari browser on my mac. For some
reason if I printed from the Adobe safari plug-in the labels did not print in
the correct spot. However, if I opened the pdf with preview instead of the
browser plug-in, it printed wonderfully.

Good luck,

I tend to agree here. For some reason I'm always logged in as Ofelia21 and
a ton of channels are listed as "testing" and you can't play them at all or
at least I haven't been able to. Only a buck but a buck times a few hundred
or thousand downloads, and someone made a killing. Hopefully we're
mistaken.

Hi Amy,

The only channel I tried was ESPN. It took a long time to load, and finally
started playing, but it only played for a few seconds, then jumped to
something else, and eventually stopped working. If this is a steal for
$.99, they reduced the price, I think they stole $.99 from us.

A Question for My Way Classic Users

2012-04-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Listers,

I just finished my first real test run with the My Way Classic GPS App and I
am most impressed.

I have but two question:

1.
What does it mean when the iPhone vibrates as I travel along a route?

2.
After creating and saving a route, when I attempt to rename any points along
the way, I get an invalid latitude error message. As a result, all of my
waypoints, so far, are labeled as P1, P2, P3, etc.

So, what must I do to successfully rename waypoints?

Thank you for any help.

It seems like the BBC and other overseas channels work, but any in the
US do not work or say "testing." I was able to pull up several
different channels and shows that were overseas without any
difficulty. But when I double tapped on a US channel, like National
Geographic Wild HD, nothing happened. Weird.

RE: Deleting music

2012-04-22 Thread Rose Combs
Absolutely not turned on, I use Voice-over always have, never even
considered using assistive touch.

I deleted the whole thing through the usage menu, then started over again,
forgetting that my normal ring tone was considered music, so was surprised
today when it rang with the Apple ring instead of the one I have the one
that is unlike anyone else has around me so I know it is mine. doing
transcription many of the doctors and others have iPhones and for a while I
was constantly reaching for mine because I was hearing that standard ring so
I fixed mine so it sounds different than anyone and for the very few who
wanted to know where I got it I said it was a secret so they won't go get it
also, people who are not around me can have it, I just don't want anyone I
might hear on dictation or anyone in my office to use the same one.

Just a thought, but is assisted touch turned on? This could severely impact
VoiceOver as some of the gestures may not work as expected. Go to settings,
general, accessibility, assisted touch.

RE: Digit-eyes observations

2012-04-22 Thread Rose Combs
yes and my friend's son had his laying on a table recently when he picked it
up his glass cracked all over the place. He had to get it replaced and he
is not careless with it. I know someone else who had the glass break for no
explainable reason, I have in plan to remove mine from the case in the
immediate future, probably not until I upgrade to 4 next year.

I admit it -- I don't have my phone in a case; I have it in my pocket. I
did use a case for a while because of the issue with the antenna but I
didn't like the bulkiness of the case or the way it made it hard to take the
phone out of my pocket and decided that I'd just rather learn to not put my
fingers over the grooves where the antenna is.

The iPhone is actually very robust. And the glass surface is very
tough. According to Jonathan Ive of Apple, speaking on the iPhone 4,
the glass is "comparable in strength to sapphire crystal but about
thirty times harder than plastic.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla_Glass

There is a site that I really like called 'Will it blend"
http://willitblend.com/ where they put various consumer items into a blender
to see what happens

On the iPhone (listed under "Don't try this at home"), they blend an iPhone
4S and phone comes to pieces before the glass breaks

http://willitblend.com/videos/view/129

They also have an app for the iphone

(and yes, the site really does sell blenders)

Re: Apple Store security questions - Was Re: need some help

2012-04-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
I was prompted to do this tonight. For what it's worth, I had an
easier time of doing this when I used a Bluetooth keyboard to move
around, It did take me 2 tries, but that was mainly because I first
entered an email address in the optional field and kept getting error
messages, then couldn't find a done/continue button, so I started the
process over. I finally got everything entered and all is well again.
Not sure why you can't use the same email address that is your Apple
ID, but oh well.

RE: Premium English TV app

2012-04-22 Thread Rick Alfaro
Right, same here. I was able to bring up most of the British stations but
all of the premium stations were listed as "testing" and would not come up.
Also, why is everyone logged in as Ofelia21? Very strange I think.

It seems like the BBC and other overseas channels work, but any in the US do
not work or say "testing." I was able to pull up several different channels
and shows that were overseas without any difficulty. But when I double
tapped on a US channel, like National Geographic Wild HD, nothing happened.
Weird.

Re: Accessible stopwatch/timer app

Hello Jenny,

A different Mark here.

This app sounds interesting.

What is the name of the app?

When I searched the app store for super reminder, all that came up was a super
fast reminder egg timer.

Re: Accessible stopwatch/timer app

2012-04-22 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hey Mark,

It's the different Marc here.

The app you're looking for is Alarmed and it's by yoctoville. It's
free but to get the super-reminder setting you have to pay an extra
$1.99 for the extras package. It's an in app purchase but is well
worth it. The Developper has worked with blind users to make the
program accessible and supporting him was a no-brainer for me,
especially when Alarmed is such a great product.

Slightly unrelated, I also like it because you can set wake up alarms
using songs from your iTunes library. This isn't possible with the
native alarm application on iDevices.

HTH!

Re: A Question for My Way Classic Users

2012-04-22 Thread Sieghard
Hi Mark,

I get the same message trying to rename a waypoint. I've been meaning
to contact the developers about this as I also would love to have the
option to give the points meaningful names.

Has anybody done a Podcast about the MyWay Classic functionality? I
thought it vibrates if you point the phone so that the next waypoint
is at 12 o'clock.

I think it would be very good to know all the ins and outs of this app
as it is so useful in open and off the map places. I used it on the
campground during my recent trip to Maui where the sink and shower was
probably 200 feet away from my tent site and in different places along
all sorts of paths and it worked pretty good.

Another fantastic use now that I have a fully waterproof case would be
to mark one's spot on the beach before you go for a swim, if you end
up coming out a 100 feet or so to either side you could just use MyWay
to go back.

Regards,
Sieghard
