If every iPhone's screen went totally blank for 60 seconds ,once a week...
how long do you think it would take Apple to send out a fix?
Do you think they would announce that 6.0 is coming and all the greatb

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread Teresa Cochran
the risk we take in buying off-the-shelf software that is accessible is that
there will be some glitches in its operation. I should say, there might be more
glitches in its operation than for a blindness-specific product. I think the
blindness community has a tendency to expect the same results from
off-the-shelf software as from blindness-oriented software. In my opinion, this
is generally an unrealistic expectation. Yes, we can make sure a product is
accessible, and give pointers to developers as the software progresses.
However, Apple doesn't have the specific concentration or resources that some
other blindness-oriented companies might have. We are a very small part of the
general market, and with this in mind, I think Apple has done an exemplary and
stellar job, and has set a trend for accessibility in mainstream products. I'm
looking forward to more accessibility of Apple products in the future.

Re: TicketGenie: or What to Do When An App Crashes

2012-06-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't use TicketGenie, but I saw something similar happen to me over
the weekend. I was using the ESPNRadio app to listen to game 7 of the
series between the Celtics and the Heat, and the ESPNRadio app just
vanished on me at least three times during the game. I doubt it was
VoiceOver related, and I still need to go and look at the reviews of the
ESPNRadio app to see how common place this is.

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I agree with your post except for the gratuitous Windows bashing. The
sentiment from customers that their pet bugs aren't being addressed is
human nature and has nothing to do with Windows. I hear the same thing
from AIX, Ubuntu, Symbian, ..., users, as well as from users of almost
all significantly complex user applications. It's also not restricted to
the blind or accessibility short comings.

Ditto for accessibility concerns. Again this is human nature, and
probably has more to do with the general discrimination faced by the
blind than it does with Windows.

Again, I agree with the sentiment of your post, but I just think that
the gratuitous Windows bashing doesn't add anything to your argument and
just takes away from an otherwise good point.

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread James Mannion
Yes, having gone off on my frustrations with the trends I have
observed, I should say that I have not had issues with 5.1 or over one
day now 5.1.1 that really cause me any big problems. Fortunately I do
not really use the calendar for all day appointments, if I did that
would be frustrating, the unlock bug is very minor in all that it
really causes, and loosing speech is the biggest issue although I have
mostly avoided that one so far. It is frustrating knowing I have just
been lucky though and it really exists as an issue. That one has been
around for a good while and they have not addressed it though and I
believe that to be a big problem. Fortunately most bugs are not really
voiceover specific in what I have known of so the population at large
can weigh in on them.

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread VaShaun Jones
Our input is heard loud and clear and we are not being put on the back burner
you have blind people specifically working on the mac and iOS to make it a
awesome experience for us. We take things in stride and we implement when
possible. Blind people have worked extremely hard to make this device 100%
accessible to the best of our ability and we hate to hear that back burner talk
that comes from the Windows world. Trust me I can vouch that accessibility is
in the front of all of Apples product from the Apple TV to the actual walk in
store and we will work hard to continue making amazing devices but stating that
we were put on the back burner sheds a negative connotation on what progress we
have made for all of us. I will say for a free screen reader we have done a
hell of allot more than those other guys and it cost you nothing.

automatic syncing

2012-06-11 Thread K. F. Ifill
Hi list,

I have an IPhone 4s and an Ipad2. I bought book through iTunes the other day
and I was playing it on the phone this morning. I decided to switch to the
Ipad and as soon as I started the book, the Ipad started at the exact point
I had stopped on the IPhone. When I switched to the phone later it didn't
do the same, but later when I switched back to the Ipad, once again it was
in perfect step.
Can someone tell me what setting I need to chance on the phone so it does
the same thing? I have the sync over wifi turned off for both devices in
iTunes, so I know it's not that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Kerry

TicketGenie: or What to Do When An App Crashes

2012-06-11 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I'm using a 32-gig iPhone 4 with IOS version 5.1.1. Recent discussion of the
NFB Newsline bug got me thinking about a situation that I'm having with
something called TicketGenie, a free app which lets you view listings of
concerts, theater productions and sports events either locally or around the
United States. When you find an event of interest, it's supposed to let you
buy tickets directly from the phone. Kind of a neat idea, actually, and in some
respects the app is fun to work with. I live here in Los Angeles and can bring
up quite an extensive list of upcoming concerts, but when I try to bring up a
listing by venue, for example, the Hollywood Bowl, TicketGenie appears to crash
and I get kicked out to the screen where I launched the TicketGenie app.
VoiceOver doesn't crash and go silent, I just get kicked out of the app. So my
questions are these:
1. When you get kicked out of an app, is there any way to find out what caused
the problem, e.g. use some sort of debug function or view an event log?
2. If I clear out the app switcher and relaunch TicketGenie, I still have this
problem, so I don't know if it's a memory issue. Could the problem be due to a
faulty install, and would removing and reinstalling take care of this situation?
3. I'd like to see if others are having this issue. Is there a way to check
that out at the app store?

Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Tom

Re: restoring back up from icloud?

2012-06-11 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

I haven't seen anyone who have replied on your mail yet, but I'm sorry I if
I've missed any mails.
When you have backed up your phone to iCloud, you simply reset your phone by
going into settings, generel and find the reset feature which should be at the
very buttum at the list and delete all from your phone.
Your phone will then restart, and boot up like if it was a totally new phone.
Then you have to inable Voiceover by the triple click home, and here you have
to choose your language.
Then choose to restore from iCloud, enter your login informations and then your
iPhone will begin restoring.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Best regards:

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread James Mannion
Although I doubt they have been, we don't have an answer if anythign
has been fixed or further broken in 6 yet, right? Or are you stating
it based on someone's experience with the 6 beta? They would not
likely mention bug fixes in an event or they would make a general
statement at best. As I state often though and feel I have good reason
to, Apple does not care enough and seemingly not at all most of the
time about fixing anything other than jailbreak holes. They leave
major functionality problems in their system for 3 months, 6 months, a
year, for ever. They just do not care. I have expressed my extreme
disatisfaction with that attitude in feedback on their site where you
can leave feedback. I was constructive about what I apreciate and to
the point about what I do not. I have done it numerous times. I have
expressed what is appropriate to direct to accessibility. They have
too much of a fan club that will buy any explative thing with the logo
on it no matter anything else and they have 70 billion dollars. They
see no reason to care about product quality apparently.

Re: Apple's with us!!

2012-06-11 Thread Chuck Dean
In the mean time, the bugs that came with 5.0 and were not corrected with
5.1 are still plaguing the iPhone while voice over is turned on.
I would have rather heard about a fix of the current problems.

We didn't make a big enough noise, so they can put us on the back burner.

Subject: WWDC: What's new in iOS 6.0

Hi folks,
Just finished with WWDC 2012 keynote and some exciting news on iOS 6.0 came
out:
* Facebook integration is official - share photos, post and like about apps
and integrates with Notification Center.
* Enhanced mail with VIP mail notifications.
* Phone enhancement with "do not disturb" mode and new sliders.
* Photo upload possible in Safari, plus offline reading mode available.
* FaceTime calls are possible with cell networks; phone numbers and Apple ID
are unified.
* Apple's own Maps app, including local traffic and businesses; includes
turn-by-turn navigation and 3D maps.
* Passbook - to act as virtual ticket holders.
* Siri now includes looking up sports scores, reservations and more, plus
more languages are available.
These are just samples of over 200 features in iOS6, according to Apple. And
you can take advantage of this release in the fall - if you have iPhone 3GS
and later, iPod Touch 4th gen and iPad II and III. Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello all. You might want to save this for future reference. Since
this topic has come up recently I thought I'd give information on
getting help with this list when it comes to managing your
subscription via email instead of the web site.

This is mainly aimed at those who don't have Google accounts and don't
want to sign up with Google just to participate on the list. To get
the help commands and email addresses for list subscription
management, send an email to viphone+h...@googlegroups.com and you
will get an auto-reply message. Note the Plus sign between viphone and
help. The below is what you will get back.

2012-06-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
What do you expect in a vacation mode? You can log onto the web site, if
you have a Google account, and change your access to the web interface.
When you get back from vacation, you can change it back to email. Does
vacation mode do anything else or is it just that it allows you to do it
with email commands?

Re: Jail Breaking, What Does This Mean?

2012-06-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
It's true Android is more open than IOS by nature, but you still have to
"root" your Android phone, which is analogous to jail breaking your IOS
device, to get root privileges.

Also, although the openness of Android allows for more innovation and
creativity, it also permits more fragmentation. I think individual
carriers and even the Android ecosystem as a while will begin to address
this though.

2012-06-11 Thread chris hallsworth
I am confident that VoiceOver will be integrated as much as possible
into the new Maps app. I'm also hopeful that VoiceOver will fully
integrate with Assisted Touch and Zoom. What isn't so clear is the new
Guided Access feature. All Apple can reveal to us is it will restrict
touch input and is designed for those particularly with learning
difficulties.

Re: Jail Breaking, What Does This Mean?

2012-06-11 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I would like to say thanks, Joseph, for writing your explanation of jail
breaking, even though I really didn't understand much of it. The fault is
mine, not yours. What I did gather is that when I get an IPhone, I will
leave the doing of such things to others, and just take what Apple allows me
to install. This is one area where I think the android phones are way ahead
of the IPhones, in that it is open source, and encourages innovation. Even
though I am leaning toward an IPhone at this time, I do believe that, within
a little while, android is going to give the IPhone a really serious run for
its money, as it were, because they do encourage innovation. Even if I had
an android phone, I would leave this experimentation for others to do. And
somebody wrote in another message that yes, jail breaking my phone would
void my warranty. Oh well.

For scandinavian IPhone users, Siri still is a no go as far as i can see. This
makes me a bit worried since more and more of the iphones features are more or
less linked to Siri. If i were to use Siri today, i'd be having to make do with
the compact Swedish voice and having to put in things in english, something i
can do but don't really like since Siri messes things up and speaks half
swedish and half english. Will this mean that the turn-by-turn instructions in
the new maps will only be in English since Siri isn't supported in Swedish?
What with other apps that integrate with Siri? Do i have to do status updates
on facebook, where most of my friends are Swedish in English?
When will the big world outside know that we are here too?

Yes! Sounds exciting!

And there are always other accessibility features which benefit us

Ben, if you were expecting news on a new iPHone then you were going to be
let-down. This is not the conference for new hardware. I would not anticipate
anything from APple until later this year. I cannot recall APple really talking
about new iPhones at a WWDC.

out:
* Facebook integration is official - share photos, post and like about apps
and integrates with Notification Center.
* Enhanced mail with VIP mail notifications.
* Phone enhancement with "do not disturb" mode and new sliders.

Re: How to go No Mail?

2012-06-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Sieghard. I completely agree with your message. However if someone
says they are not comfortable with using a web page and searching for
things, it's different than the person saying they don't have time to
read the information given.

By nature I look up things on the net first instead of writing to a list
to ask the question. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, or that
someone doing the opposite is right or wrong. Just merely pointing out
that people do things differently. By all means, ask questions on the
list, even if they are repeat questions. However, I still feel it's
appropriate for someone to reply with a message similar to Esther's in
saying, that there is an archive link. And then providing that link,
whether it's with more details or with examples of how that question is
best answered. After that, it's up to the original person to either read
the archive from the link provided, or not. But taking the time to write
on list to say they don't have time to read the link seems flawed to me
because if you can take the time to write that you don't have time to
read, then you obviously had time. You just chose to invest it in
writing about how you don't have time rather than actually reading the
information provided. That's what I take issue with.

For anyone else reading this, let me be clear, I welcome all questions
appropriate to the list here and no one should feel like they cannot
post. Additionally, if the answer is something which has already been
covered, please try and take the time to read the answer on the archives
so that many more messages are not written, which do take up more time
in the long run. The mail-archive.com site is very easy to use, and if
someone doesn't feel comfortable with that, I'm willing to give pointers
on how to use it. All someone has to do is ask me off list.

I hope this helps. As always, anything about how the list is run,
comments, or complaints, or whatever which is list administration
specific needs to be written to me and/or Cara privately.

excuse, anybody who is afraid to look for something in the archives
which he or she knows has most likely been discussed should maybe
consider taking the time to learn. In this case I had also immediately
replied to both Jane and Debbie directly with instructions on how to
simply log on to the Viphone list site, go to "Edit my Membership" and
select the "No email" radio button, then press "Save these settings",
I even provided the appropriate shortcuts which are common to most
screenreaders like "r" for the radio button and "b" to find the "save
these settings" button. I didn't post this because I didn't think I
needed to add to the list traffic with this, Esther's method is more
general as it applies to all google groups and I don't answer people's
questions in order to solicit their gratitude, but I never had even
just a brief acknoledgement from either Jane or Debbie that they
received my message and were able to achieve what they wanted based on
my instructions. All I can say is that it's probably good that I am
not a Moderator, you guys are more forgiving when it comes to all
these "Thanks", "What does this app do" and so on posts. I know there
are new people joining constantly, but as the list matures and as the
archive topics grow so should its content. I also have a busy schedule
and being a digest subscriber another pet peeve of mine is the fact
that sometimes you have literally pages and pages of old messages in a
reply because people don't bother pressing "Control+A and "Delete"
before they reply so that all of these old messages are cleared out.

Re: Slightly confused, how does one get to jailbreak app voice activator interface?

2012-06-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, just so you know, all apps, tweaks, or whatever which is installed
from Cydia are called packages. Now, some of them will have a new home
screen icon, and some will not. If they don't, then they usually have a
button in the settings app so you can configure them. Voice Activator
has one in the main Settings app.

not entry in the main settings app. I could not find anything within
its page on Cydia to double tap on to bring me to any kind of setup

tweaks work since there is no home screen icon to get to them. That is
also a point I am not certain of at this point. How does one get to
tweaks installed or even delete them for that matter? It called this a

Hi, winscp is to copy files to and from 2 areas via the ssh secure way.
If you want to ssh into your jailbroken iPhone, then you can use a

Hi,
To explain jailbreaking, I think we need to visit operating system
security and user levels. But first:
Yes - jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things. Jailbreaking
means using some OS exploit to run programs using a different user's
privilege, whereas unlocking means allowing a device to be used on any
carrier (as many phones are locked to specific carriers).
Now onto the subject at hand:
There are at least two user modes under Unix (which is the basis for iOS
and Mac OS X and other OS's such as Linux): root and normal user. The
root is the user which has total control ovth files and programs on
Unix, such as program installation, file system modification and so on.
Many Unix systems run in normal user mode for most of the time - and iOS
follows this.
Under iOS, there are two users defined (although it may not appear to be
so): root and mobile. Root is the admin account while mobile is the
regular user mode of the iOS. What dailbreak does is it changes the
running mode of the iDevice to that of root mode where the device user
has total control over files and programs on an iDevice. This allows
installation of apps not authorized by Apple and to perform other things
such as modifying how the device works by using tweaks and changing files.
But you may ask, "how can I access my iDevice from my computer?" This is
where SSH (Secure Shell) comes in. This is a terminal environment where
a computer can access another computer over it network. A good example
is remote website administration from a home computer. In order for
this to work, the target device must be told to accept "incoming" SSH
connections (in this case, by jailbreaking it and installing OpenSSH).
From the local computer (the one which will be accessing the iDevice),
the user needs to know the IP address of the iDevice, its root userdayn
and password (by %default, it is "root" for user"^n and "allpine" for
password; it is recommended to change the password). Because we're
using root user mode,
be careful about what you do with file system in iDevice - one wrfg
change and it requires restore via iTunes, which installs "regular"
firmware instead of jailbroken firmware.
Finally, let us investigate how jailbreaking is even possible. Operating
systems, like any programs, contains well-known bugs and opportunities
for programmers to mess around with it (at least through bugs and
programs). For example, there was a bug fix release by Apple last year
because some PDCF documents made the device unstable, which was used by
jailbreak programmers (this is callbed "exploit," that of using a bug to
mess around in an OS). So in order for jailbreak to work, programmers
need four things: the exploitable bug itself in a device firmware, a
modified firmware that allows root control of a device, a way of
transfering this new firmware and making it permanent (called
"untethered jailbreak"). First, the programmers find out the exploit in
a firmware, prepares a new (modified or unlocked) firmware that be^akes
advantage of the exploit and makes it availible to others. Then the
jailbreak package connects to the iDevice (mostly via iTunes connection)
and embbeds the newly modified firmware to the device's memory. Then it
does some modifications to make this patch permanent unless restoration
via iTunes occurs, at which point the jailbreak will be undone by
flashing the
official firmware from Apple.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph

The VO issue is something a lot of us have mentioned before with it just
going quiet for 60 to 90 seconds. It will come back if you just wait a bit.

The only real big bug I've experienced is the app itself crashing every now
and then. That and when going back to a previous section, not being placed
on the area I was but rather at the top of the paging necesitating me
having to swipe down the page to find my place again.

really like it. But since I downloaded it, Voice over has stopped working
three times...Twice while listening to N F B Newsline Mobile
 , and
once while running other apps.

The only way to restore it is to shut off the phone and restart.

I sent a bug report to N F B Newsline support, but they said this is a voice
over problem and not related to the app.

I have never had this happen before I installed the app.
So is this a bug with this app or have I been very lucky up to now?

Re: changing the from address on the fly?

2012-06-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Hi, 2 ways.

1, go to the mail app and choose the account you want to send from and
then tap compose.

2. Go to settings app and then the mail section and change the default
account. Now when you do this you can send from any app or a web site
and it will use which ever from you defined as the default account.

There is no way to change the from field on a per-use basis however in
case that's what you are asking about.

Hi everyone. Just a reminder that we'll be doing a Live Stream this
afternoon covering the Apple WWDC keynote. The keynote starts at 1 PM
eastern, and we should be starting our stream at around 12:30 PM. If you
would like to listen, you can point your media player to

If you'd like to interact with the show, there are two ways for you to do
that. The best way is to use the #VoLive hash tag on twitter. However,
if you don't use twitter, you can send an email to
s...@screenlessswitchers.com. If you email, you'll need to put what you
want to say in the subject line only. This is because I won't actually be
opening the messages, I'll be using boxcar on my iPhone to get
notifications of them, and all I see there are the subject lines.

Re: changing the from address on the fly?

2012-06-11 Thread Sieghard
Hi Kliphton,

Yes, you can change this and Ricardo basically explained this
correctly, here it is in a bit more detail:

Once you started a new email or used "Reply" or "Forward", find the
message header. You will find a "CC, BCC, and From" field, not sure if
field really is the right word, but it wil say these things and if you
double tap on it, it will at least for me typically put me in the "CC"
field and start edit mode. If I now flick right I get to "BCC" and
then to "From" and after "From" it will announce my default email
address. I now double tap on this and keep on flicking to the right
past "Subject" and the message body and at some point after 2 or 3
flicks right you should once again hear your default email address
announced followed by "PIcker item, 1 of 2" (I have 2 emails set up,
business and personal so for me it says 1 of 2, if you had 3 mails set
up it would say 1 of 3, of course. Now do a single finger flick up,
Voiceover will unfortunately not announce the new selection, but if
you flick back to the left you should find that the "From" email has
now changed to your other email. Once again, if you have 3 accounts
set up I assume you could flick up twice to get to the first of the 3.

Sieghard

Re: Web sites for free ringtones

2012-06-11 Thread Sieghard
Hi Sandy,

Ringtones is one of those topics which have been discussed a lot and
the archives will yield quite a few results, here is the second result
I found when searching for "free ringtones" in the list archive:

Hi all,

If you want a source for thousands of high-quality, free iPhone ring
tones, look no further than this site. It's very easy to use and the
selection is amazing.

http://www.free-ringtones.cc/

Using the archives really does work!

Today's Maccessibility Live Stream

2012-06-11 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi everyone. Just a reminder that we'll be doing a Live Stream this afternoon
covering the Apple WWDC keynote. The keynote starts at 1 PM eastern, and we
should be starting our stream at around 12:30 PM. If you would like to listen,
you can point your media player to
http://darcy.serverroom.us:8576/listen.pls?sid=1
If you'd like to interact with the show, there are two ways for you to do that.
The best way is to use the #VoLive hash tag on twitter. However, if you don't
use twitter, you can send an email to s...@screenlessswitchers.com. If you
email, you'll need to put what you want to say in the subject line only. This
is because I won't actually be opening the messages, I'll be using boxcar on my
iPhone to get notifications of them, and all I see there are the subject lines.

Hi all. I'm just passing this along that if you know of others who are
not on this list and who might want to join, they can do so even if
they don't have a Google account. To join this list, use the following

I just wanted to pass this along in case some new users are not

Being new, I ask: I think jail breaking a phone means that one can install
apps onto it that are not approved by apple. What is ssh? Most
importantly, will this void my warranty, or will apple deny me updates
because they think I have an illegal phone? I do not think one can get
updates for an unlocked phone, I may not be correct about that. And I
assume that jail breaking and unlocking are not the same. Thanks for
clarification.

RE: Slightly confused, how does one get to jailbreak app voice activator interface?

2012-06-11 Thread Jon Pierson
Hi,
You will probably want to pick up SB settings I believe the package is
called from Cydia as well.
Voice Activator is configured from within settings. Under settings, on the
first screen, swipe past about 2/3 of what's there and you'll find it. From
there you can type in the spoken command and choose from hundreds of actions
including opening any app on the phone.

Thanks for the reply for sure. I did want to let you all know I figured out
my issue with the voice actions and being able to get to its settings after
purchasing it in Cydia. It was that I had not activated the install after
the purchase. This is my first couple of hours in playing with anything
jailbroken and Cydia. Then it took me a minute because Ihad to realize that
it wanted me to activate the confirm button on the screen where it lists
everything. I have no problem with any of this, actually the interface is
kind of cool in that regard, but I had to figure it out. The least fun part
was getting voiceover to read the paypal page that came up in the purchase
process. Voiceover does not like that apparently large page and it is
sluggish to react and sometimes you get nothing and then a couple of the
delayed reactions. That combined with not being familiar with what they
wanted me to do on that screen to begin with was not so fun. I figured it
out.

Re: Is it still possible to save and later use SSH blobs to reinstall an IOS version?

2012-06-11 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

At the moment, yes, this is still possible but will probably be fixed
soon. Cydia saves your blobs the first time you open it so you don't
have to worry about iShshit if you don't want; even if a downgrade
isn't currently possible, Cydia will still save the blobs in the hope
that it will be possible some day.
Imo the easiest way to downgrade at the moment is via redsn0w on the
PC, which handles fetching the blobs, stitching them to an ipsw and
then performing the restore.

There are other ways to do this depending on how old your device is,
but the above will work for you.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: Jail Breaking, What Does This Mean?

Jailbreaking is not illegal however it will void any Apple warranties
you have. But it is certainly not illegal. SSH I think allows you to
securely connect to a remote machine.

re: Jail Breaking, What Does This Mean?

2012-06-11 Thread Joseph Lee

Hi,
To explain jailbreaking, I think we need to visit operating
system security and user levels. But first:
Yes - jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things.
Jailbreaking means using some OS exploit to run programs using a
different user's privilege, whereas unlocking means allowing a
device to be used on any carrier (as many phones are locked to
specific carriers).

Now onto the subject at hand:
There are at least two user modes under Unix (which is the basis
for iOS and Mac OS X and other OS's such as Linux): root and
normal user. The root is the user which has total control ovth
files and programs on Unix, such as program installation, file
system modification and so on. Many Unix systems run in normal
user mode for most of the time - and iOS follows this.
Under iOS, there are two users defined (although it may not
appear to be so): root and mobile. Root is the admin account
while mobile is the regular user mode of the iOS. What dailbreak
does is it changes the running mode of the iDevice to that of
root mode where the device user has total control over files and
programs on an iDevice. This allows installation of apps not
authorized by Apple and to perform other things such as modifying
how the device works by using tweaks and changing files.
But you may ask, "how can I access my iDevice from my computer?"
This is where SSH (Secure Shell) comes in. This is a terminal
environment where a computer can access another computer over it
network. A good example is remote website administration from a
home computer. In order for this to work, the target device must
be told to accept "incoming" SSH connections (in this case, by
jailbreaking it and installing OpenSSH). From the local computer
(the one which will be accessing the iDevice), the user needs to
know the IP address of the iDevice, its root userdayn and
password (by %default, it is "root" for user"^n and "allpine" for
password; it is recommended to change the password). Because
we're using root user mode,
be careful about what you do with file system in iDevice - one
wrfg change and it requires restore via iTunes, which installs
"regular" firmware instead of jailbroken firmware.
Finally, let us investigate how jailbreaking is even possible.
Operating systems, like any programs, contains well-known bugs
and opportunities for programmers to mess around with it (at
least through bugs and programs). For example, there was a bug
fix release by Apple last year because some PDCF documents made
the device unstable, which was used by jailbreak programmers
(this is callbed "exploit," that of using a bug to mess around in
an OS). So in order for jailbreak to work, programmers need four
things: the exploitable bug itself in a device firmware, a
modified firmware that allows root control of a device, a way of
transfering this new firmware and making it permanent (called
"untethered jailbreak"). First, the programmers find out the
exploit in a firmware, prepares a new (modified or unlocked)
firmware that be^akes advantage of the exploit and makes it
availible to others. Then the jailbreak package connects to the
iDevice (mostly via iTunes connection) and embbeds the newly
modified firmware to the device's memory. Then it does some
modifications to make this patch permanent unless restoration via
iTunes occurs, at which point the jailbreak will be undone by
flashing the

official firmware from Apple.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,

When you double tap on your name in the from field, swiping to the right should
bring you into the lists of e-mail addresses available on your device.

changing the from address on the fly?

2012-06-11 Thread Kliphton
I asked this question about 6 months ago, but no one knew the answer. But
wondering if it has changed, does anyone know how to change your from
address on your iPhone when you have multiple email accounts?
