Hi Sieghard. I completely agree with your message. However if someone says they are not comfortable with using a web page and searching for things, it's different than the person saying they don't have time to read the information given.

By nature I look up things on the net first instead of writing to a list to ask the question. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, or that someone doing the opposite is right or wrong. Just merely pointing out that people do things differently. By all means, ask questions on the list, even if they are repeat questions. However, I still feel it's appropriate for someone to reply with a message similar to Esther's in saying, that there is an archive link. And then providing that link, whether it's with more details or with examples of how that question is best answered. After that, it's up to the original person to either read the archive from the link provided, or not. But taking the time to write on list to say they don't have time to read the link seems flawed to me because if you can take the time to write that you don't have time to read, then you obviously had time. You just chose to invest it in writing about how you don't have time rather than actually reading the information provided. That's what I take issue with.

For anyone else reading this, let me be clear, I welcome all questions appropriate to the list here and no one should feel like they cannot post. Additionally, if the answer is something which has already been covered, please try and take the time to read the answer on the archives so that many more messages are not written, which do take up more time in the long run. The mail-archive.com site is very easy to use, and if someone doesn't feel comfortable with that, I'm willing to give pointers on how to use it. All someone has to do is ask me off list.

I hope this helps. As always, anything about how the list is run, comments, or complaints, or whatever which is list administration specific needs to be written to me and/or Cara privately.

Hi Raul and others,

I think people often ask the same questions over and over instead of
checking the archive because they may not be profficient enough on the
web to quickly find this information. I am not saying this is an
excuse, anybody who is afraid to look for something in the archives
which he or she knows has most likely been discussed should maybe
consider taking the time to learn. In this case I had also immediately
replied to both Jane and Debbie directly with instructions on how to
simply log on to the Viphone list site, go to "Edit my Membership" and
select the "No email" radio button, then press "Save these settings",
I even provided the appropriate shortcuts which are common to most
screenreaders like "r" for the radio button and "b" to find the "save
these settings" button. I didn't post this because I didn't think I
needed to add to the list traffic with this, Esther's method is more
general as it applies to all google groups and I don't answer people's
questions in order to solicit their gratitude, but I never had even
just a brief acknoledgement from either Jane or Debbie that they
received my message and were able to achieve what they wanted based on
my instructions. All I can say is that it's probably good that I am
not a Moderator, you guys are more forgiving when it comes to all
these "Thanks", "What does this app do" and so on posts. I know there
are new people joining constantly, but as the list matures and as the
archive topics grow so should its content. I also have a busy schedule
and being a digest subscriber another pet peeve of mine is the fact
that sometimes you have literally pages and pages of old messages in a
reply because people don't bother pressing "Control+A and "Delete"
before they reply so that all of these old messages are cleared out.

Regards,
Sieghard
