Re: High Quality headphones for an iPhone.

2012-10-06 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I think good is a relative term. They sound way better than the old Apple
headphones but, I wouldn't want those to be my main headphones. I find them
uncomfortable for long wear. I have been using the Shure 215 with the mobile
kit. These are IEM. In ear monitors. They come with very comfortable foam
sleeves that conform to the shape of your ear. It blocks out a lot of noise
so, I would not recommend walking with both ears in. Thats just asking to get
hit by a car. I like that you can remove the monitors from the cable. I
rather by a cable than replace the entire pair of headphones if need be. The
Shure215 with mobile kit costs about $140 at amazon. The mobile kit is
basically a cable with a mic and controls on the right wire like the apple
headphones.

RE: questions about the westminster chimes app

How do you get the phone to not talk to you and give you a verbal
notification when it is also chiming?

Hi Everyone,

this app has been kind of temperamental concerning interaction with its
settings buttons since updating to I.O.S 6. However there is a work around
which a friend of mine and I discovered while waiting for its maker to
respond.

As to what caused the behavior with these buttons to change only when
voiceover is running I'm not technical to know though Apple Accessibility is
aware of it and so is its maker. If any other users would like to write to
its maker it's

supp...@luthersoft.com

As for the work around in the meanwhile if you swipe past the button in
question which you'd like to successfully interact with then swipe left to
get back to it suddenly it'll operate as it ought.

then you can successfully change things such as chiming style and scheduling
and the like.

Its maker also suggests for optimal results navigating to phone settings and
notification center and changing the settings for this app to sounds only
turning off badges alerts and the like for it.

I hope this helps.

I have the paid version, and I think I've just managed to turn the chimes
off. I clicked the button to turn n it off, and was kicked out of the app,
but it doesn't seem to be chiming anymore.

Hi Denise,

I got that one today. If you get the free one, you can't change anything
but, if you buy the 99 cent version, they promise you can change everything
including quarter hour, specific times of the day on or off, one of 3 chimes
and chimes on and off.

I can only select one of 3 chimes and that is all. Wonder how we can get
help because I can't see where to go to get help.

Last night I purchased the Westminster ap and I have a couple of questions.

How do you get it to just chime and not announce that it is chiming on the
quarter hour or hour? Does the hour chime actually chime the number of
hours it is and how do you get it to do that?

Re: more FaceTime questions

2012-10-06 Thread Scott Howell
Vicky,
First using WIFI will always provide a much better image than 3G/4G (note I am
not referring to LTE which is only available with the iPhone 5). You must have
a shared data plan in order for this to work, so all the more reason to use
WIFI where possible. Your brother would not be able to use Face Time over 3G
with an iPhone 4.
I am not sure about the distance the phone should be; however, I would think
that 8 to 10 inches would be sufficient. Perhaps your family member can give
you some idea while you are talking with them.
You might be able to improvise a stand of sorts so you do not have to hold the
phone for long periods of time.

Has nothing to do with the lightening feature. The iPhone 4 and its charger
will have the same behaviour. If the device is turned off and you plug in the
charger, the iPhone 4 or 5 powers on automatically, at least in IOS 6.

If you are in the United States, Mapquest Mobile is very good.
It provides turn-by-turn directions in either walking or driving mode.

RE: An iPhone 5 question

2012-10-06 Thread Daniel Miller
It probably has something to do with the all-digital nature of the lightning
connector. Regardless of whether or not the USB part is plugged into
anything, the cable still sends digital signals to the phone, causing it to
power on if it wasn't.

No, it was a small holder thing which rested on the desk and you put your
phone inside it and it had a headphone socket and charger socket on it. I

handbreak

2012-10-06 Thread Tom Rash
Would someone happen to have a direct link to download the handbreak software?
I went to handbreak.fr, but it is so full of ads I couldn't find a link to
download it. I started to download it but some optimizer thing started to take
over the download. Maybe that is the way it does it but I stopped the download
because it just looked weird. Any, if there's a direct link somewhere I'd
appreciate it.. thanks.

more FaceTime questions

2012-10-06 Thread Vicky Collins
As I mentioned in a message here the other day, I wasn't sure
whether FaceTime not working was a problem with my phone or my
brother's. But, since my brother was able to get a FaceTime call
with me to work using Wi-Fi on his new iPad, and my sister and I
could FaceTime with her iPhone 4 using Wi-Fi and my 4S again
using the cellular network, it looks like the problem between my
4S and my brother's 4 must have been due to a setting on his
phone.

Anyway, now that I am able to do the FaceTime over 3G with my
AT&T iPhone 4S, I do have some questions.

First, does anyone know just how much data a call like this uses?
Best I can tell from my research on Google and trying to keep
track of my data usage, maybe somewhere around 3MB a minute.

Second, since I normally don't want to keep my Wi-Fi turned on,
using the 3 or 4G, or whatever it is, just works better for me.
But, am I sacrificing the quality of the picture the folks see on
the other end by not using Wi-Fi?

And, third, what is the best way to hold the phone for one of
these calls? I mean, holding the phone perhaps ten inches out in
front of me and about waist level as what is normally needed for
my family members to see me, not to mention trying to make sure
we can hear via the speaker phone, well, I'm more than ready to
end the call and give my hand and arm a rest after about five
minutes. But, am I missing something here in regards to the
proper way to handle one of these calls? Would using earphones
or the back facing camera make things any better? Or, perhaps I
just don't understand the right way to position my face and the
camera to make things work the best?

So you're saying the actual USB plug is plugged into nothing, yet the phone

Yet, I just tested it, and yes, that indeed happens.

phone automatically turns on. Is this normal? This never happened with the

A Musical Instrument Tuner Question

2012-10-06 Thread Karen Poulakos
I have seen some tuners that have a clip that you attach to the instrument,.
It picks up the vibration and displays the pitch of the string on the tuner.
Since these are inaccessible, I'm wondering whether there might be something
similar to this for the iPhone. It would make tuning in situations where
there is a lot of background noise much easier.

Re: external battery, 7000

2012-10-06 Thread reggie.alvar...@gmail.com
Thanks so much Sieghard! Hubby cannot see either, but as you said the battery
causes the phone to chime and say charging so it is easy to tell. Had a friend

Hi Regina,

I think all of these external batteries basically work the same. The battery
should have a regular USB plug in like you have on a computer or on your iPhone
wall charger so any cable you can use to charge your phone from the computer or
your wall charger will work fine.

The battery works just as if you plug your phone in, it provides power to the
phone just as your computer or wall charger does. If your phone is at 90% and
you plug it into the battery it will charge it back to 100%, if it is at 2% it
will do the same and if you totally run down the battery to the point where
your phone shuts down automatically, it will take 2 or 3 or maybe even 4
minutes before it turns back on, but once again, this is the same as when you
plug it into the wall charger.

You will most likely find that the battery will not charge your phone as fast
as the wall charger, but my laptop, for example, also takes longer to charge my
iPhone and if you plug it into a laptop that is running on battery it’s
basically no different than if it’s plugged into a dedicated external battery.

As far as whether the battery is charging the phone or not you can easily see
this when you check the status bar, if you are, for example, down to 15% and
plug it into the battery, you ccan check the status bar battery indicator. If
it says “15%, charging”, then obviously it is getting power from the phone. If
it continues to just announce 15% and you don’t hear the sound it makes when
you plug it in your battery is most likely dead. Make sure you ask your husband
if your battery has an on/off switch and remember which position is on and
which is off so you can be sure the battery is turned on.

the battery, and at least this time the charger is not hot, just warm, although

What I really want to know is whether when charged the battery is used to
actually charge the phone with the cable from the iPhone charger or do you use
it as if it is a battery with the iPhone cable. Do the external batteries wrk
after you run out of internal battery power immediately or do you have to wait

Re: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

2012-10-06 Thread Tara Prakash
Thanks Richard and all. I may have misunderstood this app. This won't serve
my purpose.

So, which is/are the most recommended scanning apps to read documents, menus
etc?

I believe you mean LookTel Recognizer?
The one that allows you to take a picture of an object and record an audio
label that will play the next time you point the camera at that object.
However, you want to make sure that you get the object to fill as much of
the shot as you can and that it is unique enough to not be confused with
something similar.
Be sure and read its description in the app store before buying so you
know

what you are getting.

RE: High Quality headphones for an iPhone.

2012-10-06 Thread Jesus Garcia
The new Ipod headphones are quite good in my opinion. They sound quite
decent even with classical and acoustic music. And you get the ability for
simple controls by clicking the tri button on the cord and can use them for
speaking. Obviously they are a wired set not Bluetooth, but I think for the
price or even better if you are getting a new iPhone 5 included they are
quite a nice buy.

Their quality is ok and good for a cheap set of earbuds, but you won't
mistake them for good headphones and they are not a cheap way to get
something that should be more expensive. I also agree that they are not all
that comfortable. They are better in all of the ways listed above than the
previous earbuds. Of course others opinions may differ.

Re: Free GPS Apps

2012-10-06 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, it depends on what you want. Driving directions, walking directions,
where am I information? If you can be more specific you can get better
answers. For example, as Richard pointed out, Mapquest is good in that
it's free and it also provides good directions for driving and walking.
The built-in maps program of the iPhone if using iOS prior to 6 is good
for giving directions although not in real time. AroundMe tells you
what's around you and what street you are currently on.

Thanks.

I think I found a device that will let you hook your Apple TV to a stereo with RCA plugs.

2012-10-06 Thread Kevin Minor
Hey there.

I'm planning on going to my Dad and Stepmother's for vacation. You may
wonder what's so exciting about this? Well, other than getting to see my
Dad and Stepmother, I wanted to take my Apple TV with me. Problem is the TV
I'd plan on hooking it to doesn't have an HDMI connection. It would either
have composite video, which is three RCA plugs, one for the video and the
other two for left and right audio channels. If it didn't have composite
video I'd have to use a coax connector, which is the screw on connector that
you hook the TV to Cable. I figured I'd be out of luck finding the devices
I'd need to connect the Apple TV to such a TV, but I'm happy to say I found
what I need. Tiger Direct sells an HDMI to Composite Video box for $60. I
also got the warranty for it which added $7 to the cost. If I need a coax
connector I can either take a VCR with me, or better yet, Radio Shack sells
such a device for $28. For Tiger Direct, go to

http://tigerdirect.com.

There's a toll free number that you can call to order what you need, which
is what I did. As for Radio Shack, most folks in the U.S. will have a local
store in their area.

I'm pleased to find the devices I need. I'm particularly happy about the
HDMI to Composite Video adaptor, because this means I should be able to hook
my Apple TV to a TV in the bedroom that has a line in and video in
connector. Better yet you could hook a device that uses HDMI to a stereo or
TV that doesn't have HDMI capability.

I'm sending this note to the iPhone lists because I know that folks use
Apple TV with their iPhones. For those of you who are wondering, Apple TV
is a small box that receives internet content such as NetFlix and Major
League Baseball, and iTunes content over a high speed internet connection.
It can be hooked to your internet router via Ethernet, or use WI-FI

Just sharing the information I learned.

GO REDS!

Stop and start VO Was:Fixed my Craigs List issue

2012-10-06 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Shane,

If I'm reading your question correctly I think there is a easy fix for
you. The two finger double tap is supposed to start and stop audio play back
in a app such as List Recorder or Music. For example if I'm playing back a
recording in List recorder I can press two finger double tapp to start and stop
play back even if I have left the app and am in another app. the same is true
for the Music app.

To stop and start VO you want to use a two finger single tap. this will stopp
speech and start it again where you left off.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I can get it to work, but it is not perfect.

My advice is to search for the TV program you want. Sadly the button for
search does not work, so if you double tap on A to Z, this brings up the search
box instead believe it or not.

Once you have found and selected the programme you want to watch, do a triple
press of home to turn voice over off and then double tap in the centre of the
screen. This should either start the programme or get you to the next screen
which is accessible again. Triple click home to turn voice over back on and if
your programme has not already started playing, explore the screen to see if
you need to accept their terms if the programme contains adult content etc.

I reported many of the accessibility issues to ITV over a year ago and did
not get a response and even left them bad feedback on iTunes. Maybe it is time
I contacted them again, especially when you see how wonderful iPlayer is now.

Once you get used to how ITV player works (or works with VO that should be
rather), you should be able to watch just about anything via the A to Z button
which is actually search.

Figured out my Craigslist issue but have another question

2012-10-06 Thread Shane Clark
Hi,
I found out the reason I couldn't find the renew button on the app is because
there's a glitch within Craigslist. However the way to renew your post is to
just delete it then repost.
My other question is, I've noticed that sometimes when I do a two finger double
tap to pause Vo speech, sometimes my music starts playing, and when I go to the
app switcher, it shows the music on page 2. Can anyone explain what's going on,
or how this works?
Thanks.

Re: High Quality headphones for an iPhone.

2012-10-06 Thread James Mannion
Their quality is ok and good for a cheap set of earbuds, but you won't
mistake them for good headphones and they are not a cheap way to get
something that should be more expensive. I also agree that they are
not all that comfortable. They are better in all of the ways listed
above than the previous earbuds. Of course others opinions may differ.

RE: Doubletap and hold using Apple BT keyboard.

2012-10-06 Thread Daniel Miller
I like that command, but there seems to be no way to actually change pages
using a keyboard. You're stuck to only manipulating items that are on the
current page. Meaning I can't move an app from page 2 to page 1 with a
keyboard, which kind of defeats the purpose of the command to me.

Re: Siri Question

2012-10-06 Thread Keith Watson
Hi Bill,

Were you using headphones while dictating to Siri? There is a bug with Voice
Over and Siri that causes weird things to happen while using a headphone set.
It has been bugged with Apple and should be fixed in the next update. In the
meantime I have taken to turning off Voice Over while dictating.

Re: ITV app in the UK

2012-10-06 Thread Chris Moore

I reported many of the accessibility issues to ITV over a year ago and did not
get a response and even left them bad feedback on iTunes. Maybe it is time I
contacted them again, especially when you see how wonderful iPlayer is now.

Once you get used to how ITV player works (or works with VO that should be
rather), you should be able to watch just about anything via the A to Z button
which is actually search.

Re: questions about the westminster chimes app

2012-10-06 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Everyone,
this app has been kind of temperamental concerning interaction with its
settings buttons since updating to I.O.S 6. However there is a work around
which a friend of mine and I discovered while waiting for its maker to respond.
As to what caused the behavior with these buttons to change only when voiceover
is running I’m not technical to know though Apple Accessibility is aware of it
and so is its maker. If any other users would like to write to its maker it’s
supp...@luthersoft.com
As for the work around in the meanwhile if you swipe past the button in
question which you’d like to successfully interact with then swipe left to get
back to it suddenly it’ll operate as it ought.
then you can successfully change things such as chiming style and scheduling
and the like.
Its maker also suggests for optimal results navigating to phone settings and
notification center and changing the settings for this app to sounds only
turning off badges alerts and the like for it.
I hope this helps.

I got that one today. If you get the free one, you can’t change anything but,
if you buy the 99 cent version, they promise you can change everything
including quarter hour, specific times of the day on or off, one of 3 chimes

How do you get it to just chime and not announce that it is chiming on the

it is and how do you get it to do that?
