Hi Rob,

When you download the free app, you can access the help menu. All of the
info is there to get you started. There are several of us on this list that
can give you further assistance if you need it. Try it. I think you will be
pleasantly surprised. HTH.

I agree Chris. Granted I need to get the hang of this ap but already it
seems to be more user friendly... just in the hand placement than
 brailletouch. Just my opinion.

That is a very good deal. They way I see it is this... Either you like

2013-06-27 Thread RobH!
Ok, still not tried it, nneed to update to iOs 6.1 or something first.

But, I read the .txt from end to end.
If it does all that efficiently and reliably, it seems to be the answer to
nearly all input issues. Will displace BrailleTouch at a stroke if it works
that well. Itching to get sweaty little fingers on it, and likely to sell
the Rii BT keyboard on the strength of it.
Addresses and resolves nearly all the primary issues discussed ad-nausium
about BrailleTouch. I'm not picking on them, I got that and like it,
suspect I'm gonna like this better though.

I note at least 2 well known listers here as primary testers, so they know
what they're on about.

so well done all, thanks to all, and on the read alone, reckon it has to be
worth the $30.

MouseKick for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

2013-06-27 Thread Jan Blüher, visorApps
Hello VIPhone-list,

I would like to point your interest to my new iOS app MouseKick. It is a game,
where you have to tap appearing mice in a cheese as fast as you can. It can be
played by both, sighted and visually impaired users. Apart from the nice
animation, the mice also do have their individual sounds, which guide us to the
right position on screen. There is a training mode to learn those sounds. To
get an impression of the MouseKick-Sounds, please watch the Trailer on YouTube
at:

http://youtu.be/tLe4ygQA-xM

You can play various game modes, in normal or in blind mode. If you know the
sounds, the blind mode is a bit easier to play. The app is fully accessible
with VoiceOver.

MouseKick can be found on the App Store at:

http://AppStore.com/MouseKick

Additional information can be found on the support web site at:

http://visorApps.com/MouseKick

If you have questions, hints, or comments, please contact me over the list or
off-list at supp...@visorapps.com. Any feedback is very much appreciated.

If you like the app, please recommend it to your friends and rate it in the App
Store.

Have fun!

RE: Apps stuck in update

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

I just wanted to point out again what I said yesterday and what David
confirmed. If an app doesn't finish updating just wait a bit and restart the
update process. This is not done from inside the App Store. Once you tap on
Update that's it, you can close the app store. If the app is stuck on a
certain percentage or even at 0 percent or if it says Waiting, then simply
double tap on the app as if you want to open it. Then wait because it can
take up to 10 or 20 seconds or maybe even 30 seconds before the download
restarts. Do not double tap again because this will only Pause the process
again. If there is a problem you will get a message and if that is the case
just leave it alone and try again 10 minutes later or the next morning or
whatever since eventually it will work.

There is definitely no reason to write to accessibility support since this
has nothing to do with accessibility and at best any tech support person
from Apple would tell you what I just said above.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thanks for the tips. What I ended up doing was selecting facebook from

One of you who is in contact with the developer may want to ask that
upgrading be made more intuitive or have it explained in the help

purchasing the upgrade should be among the easiest and most intuitive

Dan,

Copy and paste the link into your browser's address bar. Maybe the link wrapped
or something. You can even paste it into Notepad first and check to see that
it's on one line, there should be no spaces at the end etc.

You could also make Internet Explorer your default browser and try clicking on
the link, but the link will not be wrong if the email to reset your password
came from Dropbox.

If you like forward it to me privately at siegh...@live.ca and I'll take a look.

Sieghard

Hi,

I too was trying to update dropbox and it got stuck.

I decided to delete it and reinstall. I now discover that I have lost the
password for my dropbox account.

I told dropbox.com that I forgot my password. It sent me an email with a link
to use to reset the password.

Firefox says the address is invalid when I click on the link provided.

Has anyone else seen this and how do we get a correct address?

thanks.

I understand what you guys are saying about stuck updates on apps. However,
that is what I tried with dropbox yesterday. It would not finish updating

I sure hope this isn't a new serious bug in IOS.

Yes, the solution is to go to the app on your home screen or in its folder
and double-tap on the app. The act of attempting to launch the app will
cause iOS to go and download the update.

RE: Apps stuck in update

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dan,

Since iOS hasn't been updatedin some time I doubt this is a bug of any sort.
I think it is probably either related to a slow connection or the app store
being super busy and I have never had a situation where an app didn't update
eventually. This has rarely happened to me at least, but I think the worst
case was that once I just left it alone until the next day and then it
worked just fine.

RE: Skype update

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ron,

Interesting how updates show up in the app store at different times. I had a
few updates last night, but the Skype update showed up for me only this
morning.

Anyhow, switching to speakerphone seems to be the same as in the previous
version which is where it was simplified. I just started a call and right
above the End Call button which is at the very bottom right above the home
key, are 4 buttons and from left to right they are:

Earpiece, Mute, DialPad, Show Options

Simply double tap on Earpiece and the call will instantly go to
Speakerphone. The Earpiece button will now change into a Speakerphone button
so in other words, it will always be named according to what is currently
selected/active.

When I connected my Apple Earpods, the button was called Headset instead of
Earpiece and when I used my Bluetooth headset it was called Bluetooth
Headset.

One thing you can't seem to do any more is to switch from Bluetooth Headset
to the Earpiece since the button seems to toggle only between Bluetooth
Headset and Speakerphone so I guess one has to turn off the Bluetooth
headset and let the call revert to earpiece that way which it will do
nicely.

Apart from that the most recent update from yesterday/today depending on
where you are seems to work nicely, there seem to be no accessibility issues
and in fact in the What's New section of the update Accessibility
improvements to video messaging were mentioned.

Regards,

Sieghard

Learning Ally App

2013-06-27 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

When using the Learning Ally app, does anyone know of a way to rewind just a
few seconds to catch something that you missed? There is no rewind button
but I thought that there might be some sort of work around that I haven't
thought of. I have mentioned this to Learning Ally customer support more
than once and they say that it will be added in a future update but they
have been saying that for almost two years and nothing yet. Alternatively,
is there another app that will play Learning Ally content? As far as I know
there isn't but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks,

Scott Duck

More Skype Update observations, was: Skype update

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello List,

I really like the current interface of Skype when you open a Contact. It is
very straight forward, everything is beautifully labeled and read by
Voiceover. You now have just 4 buttons for call options (in the case of a
Skype Contact) and they are in 2 rows with a left and right button in each
row as follows:

Video Call button, Voice Call button

IM button, More button

When you double tap on the More button, you get either 2 or 3 choices and a
cancel button. You always have the options for Send Photo and Send Video
Message and if you have also saved a phone number for that contact you
have, in addition to these options, an option to Send SMS.

If your Contact is a Skype Out number, e.g. just a name with a phone number,
you have only 2 buttons:

Voice Call button, SMS button

If you swipe right past the SMS button you do hear Voiceover say Video
Message and IM, but it does not say button and you don't hear these
options when you move your finger around the screen (unless you do it really
fast and eradic), but either way, they are not announced as buttons since
you can't do a video call or send an IM to just a phone number, I guess
Voiceover reads the label but they are not actually buttons.

One thing I noticed for the first time is that the DialPad is very slow. If
you manually dial a phone number, the dial tone plays quite long and after
it stops it takes a good second and then Voiceover announces the number you
double tapped or split tapped and it will say paste for some reason. If
you try to split tap or double tap another number before this has all
finished it doesn't work so each number takes about 2 seconds before you can
dial the next which means dialing a 10-digit phone number is a painfully
slow process. I'll report this to Skype and if some others do as well
hopefully they will do something about it. I really wish Apple would allow
VoIP apps to allow for touch mode dialing like you can do in the stock Phone
app instead of forcing us to double or split tap each number.

Luckily this slow response is not happening when you activate the DialPad to
dial numbers during a call, but you still have to double or split tap each
number.

Also, if you activate the DialPad during a call or even tap on the Show
Options button, there seems to be no apparent way to dismiss the DialPad or
pop up window with Show Options. In other words, if you have the DialPad
active and you want to end the call the End Call button is not there, just
the DialPadwhich makes for a nice clean look, but might baffle some people.
I tried the Go Back gesture which is that z-shaped or zigzag gesture with
2 fingers and it works well to get rid of the DialPad or the Show Options
choices.

OK, I think that's all I noticed and thought I post about. In short, the
Skype app is beautiful, fully accessible with a couple of extremely minor
flaws but which can be worked around.

Regards,

Sieghard

2013-06-27 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Scott,

I, too, have complained about this problem to Learning Ally multiple times. I
really wish there was a way to back up a few seconds, but there doesn't seem to
be one. And as far as I know, there's no other app that can play Learning Ally
content.

Best,
Anna

 Hi Everyone,
When using the Learning Ally app, does anyone know of a way to rewind just a
few seconds to catch something that you missed? There is no rewind button
but I thought that there might be some sort of work around that I haven’t
thought of. I have mentioned this to Learning Ally customer support more
than once and they say that it will be added in a future update but they have
been saying that for almost two years and nothing yet. Alternatively, is
there another app that will play Learning Ally content? As far as I know
there isn’t but it never hurts to ask.
 Thanks,
 Scott Duck

help with zello

2013-06-27 Thread Cris Ali
Hello folks,
I hope someone here can help me with zello. I am trying to find a way of
finding a toggle where I do not have to keep my finger on the hold to talk
button. If I want to give a talk for half an hour or so, it gets tiring to
keep my finger on the hold to talk button. I know that the android zello app
has a toggle to switch this button so that one can simply keep the microphone
on until the person is done with talking. Is this feature available in the
iPhone app?

I would appreciate any help.

Re: Tap Tap See couldn't read one thing so used face time to get it done

2013-06-27 Thread Alan Paganelli
That's because they are two different sorts of apps. I own both of those apps.
I use talking Goggles to read what's on the screens of my washing machine and
dryer. They both sit on pedestals and are front-loaders. When they are
running, they can vibrate slightly which moves the screen very slightly and
with a still camera shot it probably be much like trying to hold iPhone still
wile trying to scan OCR. I've tried Tap Tap See a number of times and could
not get it to read the screen at all but talking goggles in video mode can.
Now on the other hand, I've spent many an hour trying to find stuff that Tap
Tap See couldn't identify and failed. I have a wall clock in my living room.
I thought for sure I got that sucker now. Not! Not only did Tap Tap See say
that was a wall clock, but it said picture is Spartan Wall Clock I said to
my sighted son what's a Spartan wall clock. He said, I don't know dad but let
me look at the clock. Then he starts chuckling. Dad, Spartan is the brand
name of the clock at the top of the face. So I moved to my Hammond Organ and
thought, let me see it get this one right. Picture is classic Hammond Organ
So, two different kinds of apps. Both are must-haves for any blind iPhone user.

  Hi Teresa,

You should try Talking Goggles in video mode if Tap Tap See doesn't work. I
actually ofind Tap Tap See gave me some kind of identification like Pudding
or something like that. However, when I used Talking Goggles it told me that it
was vanilla pudding which was important since I have the exact same packaging
but as chocolate pudding. /Talking Goggles will do amazing OCR which is
something Tap Tap See doesn't do.

  Regards,
  Sieghard

So yesterday I was ranting and raving about using Tap Tap See and I used it
again tonight to identify more cans, bottles and boxes, more shouts of joy.
There was one bottle of supplements it couldn't read. I have been wanting to
try face time so did that with my daughter and she was able to tell me what it
was.

Also with Tap Tap See, I was able to identify an ATM on the street the other
day while exploring the neighborhood.

This iphone is becoming more and more useful every day.

Thanks to every single person on this list. You are encouraging and inspiring
and enlightening as well.

  Take good care,

  Teresa

As ever, it's a perception and practice thing, I noted that in the manual,
and it was spelled out as clear as they could do it. More confuses, less is
too vague.

The ergonomics of it seem right in so much as your forearms do point in at
an angle to form a V, so the key positions are defined where your fingers
would naturaly fall on the screen. That is - your third fingers are up near
the furthest corners, and first fingers quite near the centre nearest you;
so keys are defined as diagonal stripes in the directions your fingers more

This is how it is portrayed in the text I read. Seems straight forward
enough to me. I admit, that's never as good as doing it.

UHello Jen and others,
When beginning to use this app, I too couldn't get the nack of using the table

fingers for dots 1-4. I also have the layout set to away. I can still braille

not resting totally on a flat surface. I hope this makes sense. May be Harri

First, I will say I hope Braille Touch can get their upgrade to contracted
braille done as I don't want to turn around and spend 30 after having gotten
Braille Touch.
Now to your issue with the dots.
With the free version at least, you want to have the home button on your right
which means the volume buttons will be pointed to the ceiling.
If you have the home button to the right and you have dots 3 and 6 on the top,
check the settings and make sure you didn't turn on the layout that flips the
dots.

Hello, Yes the iPhone does have this feature as well, it's called head/remote

When you launch Zello, Double tap on the button that's on the upper left, it's
called the navigation button, then click to the right until you get to
settings, Again in settings flick to the right until you get to the audio
section, and that's where you'll have the option to turn on the head/remote
control feature on, you will be able to double tap on the screen, or use the
EarPods.

I believe there are two or three blue tooth GPS receivers now that work with
iDevices. I have not seen or used any of them.
Duel Electronics and BadElf are two I remember discussions about a year or

amazon sold them both and I'm thinking there is another, but I can't

I'd suggest a search on Amazon for blue tooth gps receiver and Apple to see

I listened to the Keynote today. I was interrupted during some of the iOS
7
portion when they were talking about the 10 new features.
However, nothing about accessibility was mentioned.
In prior Keynote addresses, they always mentioned accessibility changes,
 improvements, etc.
Siri is getting a new voice, but that has nothing to do with
accessibility.

In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an
accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps.
If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to
avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility.

I know there are developers on this list and I know you are all under
NDAs,
but it will be good to know if accessibility is being improved rather than
 ignored.

 Just my two cents worth,

RE: Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps?

2013-06-27 Thread Jeff Samco
It depends on what GPS app you will be running on an iPod Touch.
Something like Navigon has all of its maps loaded onto the iDevice,
therefore no internet connection is needed. Other GPS apps, like the
sometime-to-be-released Seeing Eye GPS app from Sendero will require
an internet connection. Since an iPod can only connect to the
internet via WiFi any GPS app requiring the internet will not be much
use out on the road.
It's true that GPS apps get location information not just through the
GPS receiver and the signal it receives from GPS satellites, but also
by tapping into cell tower location information. However, I use an
iPhone with no cell plan and the cell phone receiver turned off. And,
I find using Navigon plenty accurate enough for my needs.

HTH,
Jeff

Re: Which Version of Skype Do You All Use?

2013-06-27 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

It does not matter which version of an app other people are using. If you are
getting the app for the first time, you can only use the latest version. Skype
is accessible. I use the latest version.

RE: Which Version of Skype Do You All Use?

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Donnie,

If you are installing Skype or, for that matter, any app for the first time
you don't have a choice as to which version you can use. Whenever you
install an app the most current version of that app will be installed. Once
an app is installed and the App Store let's you know that there is an
update, then you can choose to install or not install the update. You even
can install the update and f you are not happy with it reinstall the
previous version provided you are syncing your apps with iTunes and that you
either haven't updated the app in question yet on the computer or made a
physical copy of the app prior to updating. This you would do by going into
your Mobile Applications folder which is located in your iTunes Media folder
and then you just find the app and use the Windows copy and paste command to
create a copy of the app. Then if you updated and decide you rather use the
previous version you delete the app both from your Mobile Applications
folder as well as from your iPhone, then you rename the copy by removing the
- copy at the end of the file name and then resync your iPod Touch with
iTunes.

As for Skype, you can very safely use the version which is currently in the
app store, version 4.9.336. Ever since the initial release of version 4.0
the Skype app has been fully accessible and the current version works
beautifully. I did just post a small review this morning so you can check
the list or the list archives for that.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps?

2013-06-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Donnie,

I just thought I mention that there is no such thing as a data plan for an
iPod Touch. There is no iPod Touch model that is 3G/LTE capable, only way to
access any data with an iPod Touch is via WiFi so that of course wouldn't be
an option for use with any GPS app that requires data.

As Jeff already said, your only option would be an app such as Navigon which
allows you to download the map data to your device. Apps such as
BlindSquare, Ariadne GPS, Sendero LookAround etc. would not work.

Hi.
I'm behind on messages and am slowly waiding through things. Just saw this
one and need to ask whether you need a data plan for the iPod Touch to be
able to be used with a receiver.
Thanks,
Dani
