I've got two good keyboards, seldom used them even before mBraille, though neither did I do a loton either idevice, cos writing was such a drag. But now, I can go all day and interact with all this without putting the PC on at all, it is almost more efficient, and certainly more convenient sometimes, to do it the iDev way. Can't Get Into Game Center All of a Sudden
Hi, all, When I sign into Game center, all I get with any of the tabs is loading. In progress. It has worked well recently, and I don't remember doing anything to change the settings. The Apple ID I use still works fine for other stuff. I have no errors or sign-in screen. i get the same result whether I go in from a game or from Game Center's main screen. Buttons not activating in certain apps
Hi all, I have some problems with a couple of apss. First, find friends. The choose label button doesn't work. I press it and nothing happens. This happens both with voice over and without it. Second, I have the same issue with the share button on youtube. worse, once I press the share button, Voice over looses focus and puts me on the status bar. Does anyone else have these issues? how to use the RII slim RT MW518 with vo.
Hi all. I just bought a RII slim RT MW518 bt keybord and I have paird it with my i phone 4s but I am having a bit of trubble using it with vo. I have quick nav turned on but I can't seem to figgure out how to dubble tap. I have tryed hitting the space bar plus the funkshion key but that doesn't seem to work. if there are podcasts showing step by step how to use this keybord that would be helpfull. Hello, does anybody know how I can browse the categories of Netflix? I know that in previous versions you used to be able to do that. Now I can't seem to find the categories. Hi Nora, The compact voice makes the IOS device a bit more responsive, but one can tell it is a low quality voice which lacks the crisp articulate sound of the normal voice you may have become accustomed to by now. Give it a try, you might find it will be ok for you. Yes, you can label the buttoms using the two finger tap-and-hold if you have IOS 5 or later. Hi Andrew, I have seen apps where double tapping a button didn't work, but split tapping did or even in some cases where I could only activate a button using the passthrough gesture (double tap and hold, then tap again). However, you said the button in Find my Friends doesn't even work when Voiceover is turned off so that last suggestion most likely won't help. I would first reboot my device which means turn it off completely, then power it on again. If that doesn't help, I'd delete the app or apps where you have problems and redownload/reinstall them and see if that helps. If that doesn't help either, your next step should probably be to write to the developers. One last question, you aren't by any chance running iOS 7 Beta? If you are, then that is most likely the problem at this point. There are always apps which won't run properly in a new version of iOS especially a Beta and you may just have to wait until the developers release an update which fixes whatever the issues are. Since any sort of discussion about iOS 7 beyond general information which Apple has already revealed in their June keynote does not belong on this list, please write to me directly at siegh...@live.ca if you have any further questions in that direction. Hi Nora, I agree with what Joseph said, the compact voice to me sounds more muffled and, well, not as high quality as the high quality voice. I have not found that my 4S is less responsive using the high quality voice. I have read some posts of people with hearing loss who actually said they can understand the compact voice better. I guess there is no right or wrong here, you just have to decide yourself, in my opinion and for my ears there is no questions that the high quality voice is much better to understand and less annoying to listen to. Hi Jennifer, As Richard pointed out, Apple has their own Apple Kehynotes Podcast and you can search for that in a podcast app like Downcast or iCatcher. If I look at Downcast on my phone it says Apple Keynotes, no episodes, last published June 10, 2013. This of course was the date of the last keynote about iOS 7. If you don't want to use a Podcast app, there will be a link to the keynote right on their web page probably on Wednesday. Keep in mind that the new iPhone will also be covered by all the media, it will be praised and bashed, analysed and discussed until like a Top 40 hit which you really like you can't hear it any more *smile*. If you don't want to listen to the actual keynote I highly recommend you listen to Rob's coverage about the keynote in his Today in iOS Podcast. He will have one out later on Tuesday and he will cover all the features. Emailing groups from the iPhone
Hello all, I don't know if this has been discussed on this list, but I found a great new app that lets you email groups from your iPhone. As far as I know, you can do this natively from your Mac, but not on the iOS device. The app is called mailshot pro, and here are instructions I've written on how to use it once you install it. Open the app, and follow these steps: 1) Tap home, then start, then create a newMailShot group. 2) type the name of your group. Bluetooth keyboards may not work for this purpose, so use the virtual keyboard on your screen. 3) Tap done at the bottom right of your screen. 4) Tap add a contact to your list. 5) select the contact from your contact list which appears. 6) Repeat steps four and five as many times as necessary to add all members to your group. 7) Tap update. You will be notified that entries have been updated to your address book. Tap ok. A contact has been created in your contacts list with the name you gave your groups, and containing email addresses for that group. you may add and remove additional members to your groups by tapping it, then tapping edit. Follow the appropriate prompts to edit, add, remove members and so on. Finish your edit by tapping the update button. To send a mail message simply open mail, and add the contacts entry for your group in the to, BCC, or CC field. That's all for now. Enjoy. Use my iPad mini for anything visual, such as watching TV, movies, or videos. I also use it with Fleksy when typing long messages. Speakers to hear TV in a different room
I had a set of cordless speakers I got about 15 years ago but they have stopped working, their main use were in the kitchen so my husband and I could hear the TV even though we could not see it, usually for news in the morning or sport, Diamondbacks games mostly. These no longer work and we miss not being able to hear. At Best Buy they told me that I am looking for old technology and they did not have what I wanted but then said I could wire speakers. Not possible, I don't think I know enough and my husband's health would prevent him from doing it. I thought maybe something existed out there where I can use an iPad mini and a Bluetooth speaker to pick up my local news on the channel we prefer and use that. I don't care about the picture and my husband seemed to be okay with the old setup of not seeing it most of the time anyway. Is there an app or appliance I could consider to receive local channels in the Phoenix area that would work with Direct TV that would come close do at least letting us hear the TV in the kitchen. I suggested just knocking the wall down but was told it was a support for the roof, guess that isn't an option, grin. I love music myself, and could live without a TV at all but my husband could not, I know he is really sick if it is turned off during the day,. Please be easy with me, other than wired speakers, I know very little, except that I have Bluetooth headphones for my phone. Anyone asks me and I tell them it is Magic. Using bluetooth might be easiest. Just like your phone having a bluetooth transmitter in it, you can buy a bluetooth transmitter that would plug into the 3.5mm headphone jack on your TV. Then, you could have a bluetooth speaker that would be easily portable anywhere you want it. Both a bluetooth speaker and transmitter would have built-in rechargeable batteries which would last on the order of 5 to 10 hours or more depending on design. Both of the following bluetooth devices I have use the common USB mini connector. Then, I just use a USB wall charger with the right cable to charge them up. I happen to have a small bluetooth transmitter made by Taotronics which is about the size and shape of a stick of gum. The battery lasts about 6 hours. I bought it through Amazon on sale for $28. I have several bluetooth receiver devices. My current favorite is a stereo speaker called Urge Basics SoundBrick. It is about 3 by 3 by 8 inches and lists as having about 80 hours of battery charge - I know, that sounds incredible. It is plenty loud with little distortion at higher volumes. It lists for about $80 but regularly see it on sale online for $35 to $40. I bought mine on eBay for about $40. First the official user's guide is in the iBook store, type in apple and it will be among the first few titles, it is free. If you have Kindle you may find lots of books on the iPad but my most often resource is IPAD the missing manual which is also on Bookshare. Don't let the name iPad fool you, the book is for all the iPad family. Amazon instant video not an accessible app?
I am an Amazon.com prime member and when I saw this app included on a list of accessible apps, I downloaded it, and I was able to sign in with my Amazon.com ID and password, but now that I'm signed in, I can't get VoiceOver to read any info on the screen and I have no idea how to get or play videos. I would say that the best thing to do is to try it for yourself. I have tried both on and off for an extended period of time to be fair to both. Some folks say with the compact voice off, that their iPhone ran slower. I didn't experience that with my iPhone 4. My problem with compact voice off was the voice would shift between compact voice off and on which I found personally annoying and I didn't think the compact voice off setting was worth it so I turned compact voice back on. Everybody's tasks are different. Try it both ways and see which way you like it. To change between compact voice off and on, do the following. 1 Open settings. 2 Flick with 1 finger right to get to general. 3 Flick right to get to accessibility. 4 open Voice-over. 5 Now flick right to get to the compact voice. This is a toggle. You can toggle compact voice on or off. Judge for yourself which is better suited to your needs. My personal choice is compact voice on. I chose movies and flicked right until I heard the movie I wanted and double tapped, then swiped to watch now and double tapped. Are you getting any voice over feedback? Apple is making an announcement on Tuesday. It has been reported according to iPhone Life magazine that ATT has told all it's ATTT store employees that nobody gets the weekend of September 20ith off. Because of that, many people myself included believe that this coming Tuesday's announcement by Apple will say that they will come out with 2 new iPhones. The what people are calling the iPhone 5S which is suppose to have a finger print reader where the home key is. I think this likely as the iPhone is the most stolen phone around. It is also said that they will also come out with a cheaper iPhone supposedly called the 5C. Cheaper parts etc but still an iPhone. Lelia, there is an unlabeled button on the left side of the screen at the top just below the status bar. You could miss it as I think it is right above a back button I think it is. It is almost on top of it. If you need further help, please let me know. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the podcast link I sent you is probably the most current. This is important because there have been lots of changes to MBraille and listening to an older podcast will confuse you as it pertains to newly added or changed features. Just listen through at least 5 minutes and you will quickly conclude this person knows what he is talking about. The NFL mobile app just received an update this afternoon. According to the whats new, the way I understand it, anyone, Verizon customer or not, should be able to listen to live audio feeds. Now I did look in the app, and I have not found where these audio feeds can be accessed, but plan on looking into it tomorrow once games have started. Just like your phone having a bluetooth transmitter in it, you can buy a bluetooth transmitter that would plug into the 3.5mm headphone jack on your TV. Then, you could have a bluetooth speaker that would be easily portable anywhere you want it. Both a bluetooth speaker and transmitter would have built-in rechargeable batteries which would last on the order of 5 to 10 hours or more depending on design. Both of the following bluetooth devices I have use the common USB mini connector. Then, I just use a USB wall charger with the right cable to charge them up. I happen to have a small bluetooth transmitter made by Taotronics which is about the size and shape of a stick of gum. The battery lasts about 6 hours. I bought it through Amazon on sale for $28. I have several bluetooth receiver devices. My current favorite is a stereo speaker called Urge Basics SoundBrick. It is about 3 by 3 by 8 inches and lists as having about 80 hours of battery charge - I know, that sounds incredible. It is plenty loud with little distortion at higher volumes. It lists for about $80 but regularly see it on sale online for $35 to $40. I bought mine on eBay for about $40. Iphone Shortcuts
The iphone shortcuts are really a great way of inputing oft repeated words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs and even whole pages just by entering a few letters! For example I just type sd and my whole signature line appears. Similarly I just type sse and my email address is typed! Or cg and my telephone number, or sfr and the prayer of St Francis is inserted. I have actually got almost a 100 shortcuts and still adding more. It is really a great IOS feature. I send some very standard replies to my client. So I have even input whole letters as shortcuts. However I am facing one problem- I cannot input a line break in my letters. Gmail settings
I am unable to receive email in my iPhone email application. It says the server IMAP.Gmail.com does not respond please check settings?!! I used the default settings in the email application for Gmail. I made some of the other accounts and they all work fine. Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong? wrong? To my knowledge, there is no way to insert a line break/carriage return into a shortcut with the builtin shortcut facility. Though it's only been a few short months since I got my iPhone, could someone who remembers better than me please tell me what information the app would have asked me to enter when I first installed it? Hello, Thank you for your information. I was actually looking for the HTML version off the user guide that is written with accessible format in mind. I find that it is easier to navigate than an iBook. I also think it might be written slightly differently. I found the accessible user guide for the iPad. Is it any different to the one on the iPad mini? I wouldn't think so but wanted to doublecheck. Hi Reggie, Jesus and others, I can't say if the 5 will go away or not and I doubt until next Tuesday anybody can say for sure unless maybe Tim Cook and a few others; unfortunately I don't think Tim is on this list *smile*. In any case, in my opinion it is possible that both the 4S and 5 will go away and only the new 5S and 5C phones will be options going forward. What Chris says about his friend upgradingto a 5 shortly means little since I don't know what shortly means. Of course if I walked into a store tomorrow and said I wanted a new iPhone then I could buy an iPhone 5 although why anybody right now would even upgrade to begin with is beyond me. Even if Apple discontinues the iPhone 5 to push people into either the 5S or 5C, There will still be many phones in the supply chain so that for at least some weeks one can probably get a very good deal on an iPhone 5. As I said in my last message, all shall be revealed in a couple of days. Thanks for this update. I poked around this evening, but I can't figure out how to get the audio feeds. I do have an NFL account, and I have signed up for Audio Pass. For example, I pulled up the recap of the Broncos Ravens game, but I couldn't find anything that lead to an audio stream of the game. Having trouble with apps Updating
My apps have suddenly started having trouble updating. When I go to the app store and whether I select update all, or whether I try to update them individually, they do not install. When I go back out of the folder, it lists the name of the folder where I have the apps. And says Seven new items, 0%. I have tried turning data on and off and I have tried turning Wi-Fi on and off. I have tried closing the App Store, I have tried powering the phone on and off. What else can I do to get the apps going again? So they can update? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hi Chasity, There is nothing you can do, this happens sometimes and is most likely an issue on Apple's end. Simply wait maybe until the morning, then if you have an app which you know had an update, just double tap on that app. If the app has an update this will not open the app but restart the download/update process and chances are your app or apps which haven't updated will update fine later.
