Re: tap tapt see

2013-11-23 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
To a degree I understand that you may have to retake pictures. It just sort of
goes with being a blind picture taker. *smile* but, it is also possible that
the individual who is examining the picture is not conveying the correct
information.

I have had a spice bottle, and I knew I had the phone pointing at the correct
location. I did not move the phone, nor did I move the bottle and yet I got 2
completely different responses when I took the pictures. The first told me that
it was a red and white spice bottle on a brown table. Information that I did
not need. The next picture told me that it was oregano which I did need. It
both instances I waited for the sound to indicate when it was ready for me to
snap a photo. I know that it isn’t possible that I shifted the phone because I
have the phone resting on it’s side on the table. for me, this is the best way
to get a good picture of the bottle.

I have used TapTapSee quite often and have become proficient at taking good
pictures which are identified. I bring this up only to illustrate that it isn’t
always the blind picture takers fault as to why a picture is not properly
identified. I understand completely why they have to charge for the service. I
still feel that there should be a short edit box or something to allow me, as
the user, to convey the information that I need. a blind user may still have to
take a couple pictures to receive the correct information. However, it is also
possible to cut down on the number of pictures because the sighted person on
the other end knows what information is being sought. I think this is a
reasonable request. Until that happens, I am using camFind with great success.
I used it today in fact to verify that the box I had was the maple flavoring
which I needed for my recipe.

Okay, try a different app and get less effective results. But at least, you are
not paying for the service. The fact is, they can only tell you what they can
make out. If you need more pictures, by the unlimited package.

Re: Program Similar to Quicken

2013-11-23 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Keith,

Well, I'm a long-time Quicken user and am looking for a similar program. I had
high hopes for a program called See Finance which sports the same features as
Quicken. They have promised a major release, but I wonder if it will occur?
Right now, the problem is that you cannot easily edit transactions, so I cannot
recommend this program yet. If they do release the promised version, I'll
certainly let the list know.

Re: 7.0.4 shut off or reboot

2013-11-23 Thread SoonerAnnie
Hi Amy...

I am having the same problems with my phone, and have attempted a soft
reset, a hard reset, and also a backup and restore of my phone via iTunes.
After making sure everything was backed up, I told it to restore and
everything was placed back on my phone. It seems somewhat better but I'm not
sure it is entirely well. It acted a bit weird a little while ago. I sure
hope the next upgrade fixes this and that it comes soon as it is very
frustrating to not have a reliable phone! Good luck with yours.

Re: pop up in search box

2013-11-23 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure, but when I use handwriting mode in the search box in the
App Store, I don't get that message about a pop up. I double tap in the
edit box, double tap the clear text button, twist the roter once to the
right to get to hand writing and then I just enter my text in lower
case, such as a 'b' and then a 'l' and then an 'i' and so on. Note that
I'm running IOS 7.0.4 on an iPhone 4S.

Fleksy or iOS 7 bug?

2013-11-23 Thread Gmail
I don't know if it's iOS 7 or Fleksy, but I'm having a few problems when using
the app. When selecting someone to text from Fleksy, I used to get dropped into
the message edit box, right at the end, which made it really handy to either
add something I'd forgotten, or delete the extra space that gets put at the end
of text that you write in Fleksy, in preparation for the next word. Anyhow, not
only am I being dropped into the to field, but Fleksy is now adding a new line
character to the end of my text, as well as the space. Oddly enough, this
doesn't seem to happen when just copying the text directly out of Fleksy. Has
anybody else noticed these issues? Are they iOS 7 specific, or Fleksy bugs?

Thanks,
Ari

Okay, try a different app and get less effective results. But at least, you are
not paying for the service. The fact is, they can only tell you what they can
make out. If you need more pictures, by the unlimited package.

Re: tap tapt see

2013-11-23 Thread Donna
Well you have the option to purchase unlimited pictures for $9.99 a month.
Unless you can see the iPhone screen, maybe it took you taking 3 pictures
before the writing on that very tiny piece of paper was in focus enough to have
the desired result returned.

I know after a failed picture or 2, I start to get frustrated and without much
conscious thinking I find myself adjusting the object I want identified and
repositioning my iPhone so to possibly get the result that I'm seeking.

A tip that really helps, after opening the app and swiping to Take Picture,
point the iPhone at the object to be identified, before tapping to take the
picture wait to you hear the Beep, the beep indicates that the object is in
focus, now take the picture. As long as there is enough lighting, make sure the
light source is in front or to the side of you, otherwise your body will cast a
shadow on the object that you want identified making it harder to be fully
identified.

Also make sure to hold the iPhone the distance of from the tip of your middle
finger to your elbow away from the object that you will be taking a picture of.

Hopefully these tips will return faster and more accurate results.

Re: Updating IOS on WIFI hotspot- is this OK?

2013-11-23 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, obviously, it's hard to know what happened in a sampling of one
and whether her problems had anything to do with her wifi connection or
not. A full repair will cure many different ills. I'm not saying anyone
is wrong for being careful about how or when they update their phone. If
I had an experience similar to your partner's, I'm sure I'd be skiddish
about over the air updates as well.

For me personally, I like doing major updates with iTunes. I get more
feedback than I do when performing an over the air update, and although
I'm sure Apple has plenty of checks built in no matter how you update
your phone, the iTunes way is the more tried and true method and there
are just more points in the process where apple can check on things,
like the integrity of the image downloaded to your PC and then
transferred to your phone.

That being said, in a pinch, I'd have no qualms about doing an over the
air update myself, and as long as I'd have the time, I'd have no problem
using any stable wifi connection available to me. After all, Apple
implemented automatic updates for apps and they even download your
update for you automatically, so you have no control over the quality of
the wifi network that your phone was using when the update was
downloaded. For example, I don't bother to stand in my pantry under my
router when I do perform an over the air update.

I think the most important point here though is that it depends on the
strength and quality of the wifi connection. Physical proximity to the
wireless router isn't a good indication that the wifi signal is going to
be strong and stable. I know there are places in my house where my
neighbors' wireless signal is stronger than my own. This is why I
suggest monitoring your wifi signal for a bit to ensure it is strong and
stable. I don't go into my pantry to update my phone just to be close to
my router, but I also know trying to update my phone from my front porch
will take forever because my signal is so weak out there.

On 11/23/2013 05:55 PM, David Chittenden wrote:

Sure Christopher. Only, my partner updated over the air using a weak wifi

Explain that however you choose. As for me, I will only update over wifi when I
have a consistently strong signal.

For me personally, I'd worry more about dropped connections and having to
restart the update process than I would about a corrupted update. I'm sure
Apple has enough checks that it won't start an update until it knows it has a
good image downloaded to your phone. Finally, unless Facetime isn't working for
you, you can just wait until you have access to your PC or a more reliable wifi
network.

Re: Unbelievable App Store bug in 7.0.4

2013-11-23 Thread Shameless FanGirl
Yep, I've seen this persistent little pain in the a** since att least the last
version of the OS as well. Oddly enough, it works as we expect on the iPad, but
with the trade-off that the entire appstore crashes loads more often than it
ever has in my nearly 12 months of owning everything from an iPad 2 to an Air.
You can get around the scrolling issue on the phone by three-finger swiping
left or right respectively, as you might do if turning pages in a book, or
moving between the pages of apps on your device. Far from ideal however, as has
already been stated. *grumbles*

Okay, sending my very long-winded yeah, I'm seeing this as well message. :)

Thanks for the clarification- I don't use FT- so thought maybe there really
was a way to update while signed in ;) Now that I've proven myself foolish,
think I'd better get some sleep :)

Re: Unbelievable App Store bug in 7.0.4

2013-11-23 Thread Richard Turner
The other work around if you want to get to the top of the same search is to
simply double-tap on the search field so it says "editing" and then double-tap
on the search button in the bottom right again.
I just tried that and it worked since nothing else does.
I thought the double-tap in the status bar might work, but it didn't.
Writing accessibility at apple next.

Sure Christopher. Only, my partner updated over the air using a weak wifi
signal, and her iDevice started having some interesting problems. When she
finally hooked up to iTunes and did a full repair, the problems went away.
Explain that however you choose. As for me, I will only update over wifi
when I have a consistently strong signal.

I'm sure Apple has enough checks that it won't start an update until it
knows it has a good image downloaded to your phone. Finally, unless Facetime
isn't working for you, you can just wait until you have access to your PC or
a more reliable wifi network.

Yep I have the same problem. Just thought that it was only happening to me,
being I seem to be experiencing "bugs" that most aren't.

Re: Unbelievable App Store bug in 7.0.4

2013-11-23 Thread David Chittenden
Yes Cara, I experience the same. My workaround is to clear my search term,
rewrite it, and double-tap search again. This always puts me back at the top of
the list. Sometimes I can go back to the top by double-tapping on search and
double-tapping on the search button without first clearing the field. Come to
think of it, the time that worked for me, I accidentally added and deleted a
letter first, so changed the data in the search field (even though the data was
identical when I was finished).

Re: Unbelievable App Store bug in 7.0.4

2013-11-23 Thread Alex Hall
You're right that you cannot go back to the top of the list. You can scroll,
though, by doing three-finger swipes left and right. This is hardly ideal, of
course, but it is something. Like the new App Switcher, the apps show on one
page after another, going horizontally instead of vertically.

Unbelievable App Store bug in 7.0.4

2013-11-23 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

Has anyone else seen this?

I was wanting to see what apps came up when I searched on the term 'blind' in
the App Store so I typed that in.

I then flicked right many times to go down through the vast list of apps which
are available from that term. I have no idea how many screens I traversed but
it was a lot.

I then re-downloaded an app which I'd already purchased and thought i'd then go
back up to the top of the list as there were a few I saw along the way I want
to check out again.

I tried using the three finger flick down, to scroll the list. This gave me the
bonk sound and would not work.

I then tried using the four finger tap to go to the top of the list and that
too, would not work.

I touched in the search field and flicked right but that only brought me right
back to the same page of app search results I am already on.

For curiosity, I also tried doing the three-finger flick up in order to see if
the list would scroll down. This also does not work.

So in essence, scrolling is not possible.

In fact, I at this moment, have no way at all to get back to the top of the
list or to move through the list at all, aside from either flicking left or
right, exiting the App Store and re-entering my search or turning off VO and
scrolling that way.

Can people recreate this situation?

Thanks so much for reading and I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks,

Cara :)

pop up in search box

2013-11-23 Thread Pinky
Hi,

When I open up the app store app and go to the search box. Then I use the
handwriting mode. After entering my first letter then VO says double tap
to dismiss pop up window. Then I cannot enter any more letters until I
double tap to dismiss the pop up window then the focus goes back to all
categories. Then I have to flick right to get back to the search box to
enter more letters. How can I stop the pop up from coming up?

Thanks in advance

Ed

As far as I know, you can only address a message to one person using Siri.

Re: Updating IOS on WIFI hotspot- is this OK?

2013-11-23 Thread David Chittenden
Sure Christopher. Only, my partner updated over the air using a weak wifi
signal, and her iDevice started having some interesting problems. When she
finally hooked up to iTunes and did a full repair, the problems went away.
Explain that however you choose. As for me, I will only update over wifi when I
have a consistently strong signal.

I'd monitor the wifi strength over time. If it stays pretty consistently
strong then there's no difference between using your friend's wifi or any
other wifi. For me personally, I'd worry more about dropped connections and
having to restart the update process than I would about a corrupted update.
I'm sure Apple has enough checks that it won't start an update until it
knows it has a good image downloaded to your phone.
Finally, unless Facetime isn't working for you, you can just wait until you
have access to your PC or a more reliable wifi network.

I believe the feature you are referring to is iMessages. IMessages are sent
between Apple devices using data rather than texting. The nice thing about
iMessages is they can be set up as group chats.

Re: Updating IOS on WIFI hotspot- is this OK?

2013-11-23 Thread David Chittenden
Personally, I would go over to his house. Poor wifi signal means significantly
greater chance of corrupted data packets, means greater chance that the update
could be corrupted. I wouldn't trust my iPhone to that increased possibility.

Re: How much do you like to text?

2013-11-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
I'm with AT&T as well and have been with them for about 3 years now. The
package I have gives me unlimited talk and text. When I got the package I had
never sent or received a text an didn't even care about it.

That having been said, texting advantages. For example, my wife is a
registered nurse and her time is very valuable. For things like stop and
pickup milk and bread on your way home isn't worth calling her to the phone
for. Other commonly used phrases can be automated as well in settings general
keyboard. Their called shortcuts. For example, ILY for I love you. WTWYBH
for what time will you be home, OMW for on my way are very handy. The only
drawback to that is, you have to remember them and when creating them, they
can't be combinations of letters that spell out words. With iOS 7.04 and
dictation, this has reduced the need for shortcuts but if your being charged by
the word, and your texting bill approaches the national debt, the money for an
unlimited texting package is well worth it. Lastly, I've learned too that if
you have unlimited, you tend to use it more. One of the things I use to enjoy
was watching the Chicago Bears play football with my brother. The problem is,
he lives outside Chicago and I live in Las Vegas roughly two thousand miles
away. Now with texting I can shoot him a quick message such as Wow! was that a
fantastic run back! or, I was getting a sandwich. What the hell is the score?
As a result of texting, it's the next best thing to having my brother here.
That's my situation. I'm sure that if you think about it, you could find many
ways where un limited texting could be useful in your life.

  Hi,
As usual, I’m way behind everyone else, I think.
I decided to try to use texting.
Right now, I am being charged 15 cents per text, sent and received.
  I use AT&T.
It seems the only other option is to pay $20.00 per month for unlimited
texting.
I do like how easy it is to do with my iPhone 5S.
  I’m just curious.
Do those of you who use AT&T find the unlimited option worth it?
  Thanks,

I pay the extra $20 a month for texting. I find myself texting rather than
calling especially if I only have a brief reason for calling. I send as many
text a month as I do emails.

RE: How much do you like to text?

2013-11-23 Thread Cristóbal
So basically, if you’re going to text more than 134 times in one billing
cycle, you’d be better off going for the unlimited plan. Texting in many
instances is more convenient. Especially if you’re on a limited minutes
plan, it is a good supplament to cut down on phone usage. You could also use
Google Voice for texting which is free.

Subject: How much do you like to text?

Hi,

As usual, I'm way behind everyone else, I think.

I decided to try to use texting.

Right now, I am being charged 15 cents per text, sent and received.

I use AT&T.

It seems the only other option is to pay $20.00 per month for unlimited
texting.

I do like how easy it is to do with my iPhone 5S.

I'm just curious.

Do those of you who use AT&T find the unlimited option worth it?

Thanks,

Crystal

Re: some calendar questions

2013-11-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
You could use reminders instead. Even Siri can remind you on that date but
you have to use the default time which if I remember right is 9 o'clock in
the morning. It works for me though and I can tell Siri to delete them too.

Cool. Is there a way to only have a list of your appointments? rather than
the day or month views? In older versions of the calendar back in IOS 5 I
think, you could switch to list and only see your appointments with no days
or months being shown for example now, I hate scrolling through the screen
and hearing every single day of the month when looking for an appointment.
I haven’t used the iphone calendar much and am looking into it more so
thanks for all your help. :)

The calendars have no special features, they are for categorizing. I put

create more calendars if you need to. The only drawback is that Siri can't
put appointments in specific calendars, so you have to change them
manually.

yes, also we can tell to siri things like wifi off, or on, Bluetooth on or

Even though, I don't know if you are noticing this last 5 days, that siri has
been not catching our requirements when we ask something to she?
she has been working really good since I received my iPhone 5s, better than

This is one of iOS 7's best features. It is great now that
I can go to anyone's phone and use it just by talking to Siri. Before I had to
walk them through going through the settings process and that at times could be
a major pain, especially if I had to fix a small issue.

I learned something new yesterday. Having had an iPhone 4 with out Siri
for the past couple of years, I am still getting use to Siri. Yesterday I
accidentally turned voice over off. My other phone rang and I had to take
that call and was on the phone for some 10 to 15 minutes helping somebody else
out of their problem. The long and the short of it was by the time I picked up
my iPhone 5s again, it wasn't talking. Pressing the triple click home thing
didn't turn it on either so here's me thinking I'm screwed now. Then I got
this idea and figured the worst that could happen to me was it wouldn't work.
So! I pressed and held the home button down and said "turn voice over on" I
wasn't really expecting anything to happen but to my surprise Siri said Ok,
I've turned voice over on. Touching my screen there was voice over. As far as
I'm concerned, Siri rocks! So I've added that to my bag of tricks. You may
want to add it to yours too. Hope this helps!

nothing. There is no beep when it gets plugged in like always and when I
called my number from my home phone, it went directly to voice mail.

twitter and notifications

2013-11-23 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,

Trying to figure out why I am not getting notifications for tweets on my
phone. I'm using the twitter app. I thought it would play a sound when one
comes in. Yet when I look on my pc I have a ton of them.
Any ideas?
