The potential of the dictation function?
Hi there! I was just playing around with my phone and I opened the notes app. Then, in a new note, I started off the dictation function. I then walked into the kitchen, where my partner was eating lunch, the radio was playing, and there was some ambient noise. I told him I wanted to carry out a small experiment with dictation and asked him to talk to me. We then had a short conversation. I stopped the dictation function and waited to see how much of the conversation my phone had picked up. It actually did very well, probably, digitising about 30/40% of our conversation. Something I noticed was that when my partner spoke the dictation made a new paragraph For him. So, what do I conclude? I am thinking that the phone has the potential, under the right circumstances, to, say, digitise a whole lecture. I think, it would need to actually record the lecture first and then take its time over the digitising from spoken to text. But I am sure it could actually do it as things stand right now. That is, I think it can do it but it with me to have its own space for the processing. Has anyone else played with this function? Perhaps, there is already an app to do it? I would be very interested to hear people's comments on this as, I think, it may have greater potential, I E, in transcribing radio programs for people who at the moment can't access them due to hearing loss. Or for students, journalists, and who knows what else? My thanks for any responses, Sandy Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Hi, I think the problem you'd run into is that the processing of dictation on the iPhone is done remotely on Apple's servers. As a result, it can only record and process 30 seconds of dictation at a time. Best, Anna Sent from my iPhone On Feb 9, 2014, at 6:32 AM, Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote: Hi there! Thanks and some Positive News
Hello Kimber, Alex, Patti, Alan, Christopher, Larry, and Sieghard, I want to thank all of you for your thoughtful suggestions. I worked with your ideas. You all on this list are so awesome. I was in a position of being totally stuck and you responded with good suggestions and help. After trying your suggestions, I talked with ATT Tech Support -- and our final conclusion was that I should try to back up and then take the phone to an aTT store where they might need to wipe it. When I opened iTunes on the PC and connected the phone, the PC made the USB connection sound, the phone chirped, and Jaws stopped talking not only in iTunes but everywhere else. I am running a 64 bit version of Windows 7 home. I had to shut down and restart to get speech. I then repeated the sequence and the same things happened. I was pretty concerned at that point. I had a sighted friend check Voice Over and it was off. With her help, we turned it on. I had a great many apps open and I closed them. I then turned off the phone and left it off for about 15 minutes. So far, it is working at this point. The puzzling thing, though, and the thing that I am concerned about, is that when VO went off, it still worked when on phone calls and when Siri was up. This doesn't sound like what should happen when VO is off. Today I backed up the phone with iTunes and things still seem to be working well. I am about to delete some data from the phone so that I have enough room to update and then take the plunge. I may see if the ATT store can run a diagnostic on the phone after I update because I don't like how VO was partly working and partly not when it showed as off. Thanks again for all your help. Re: phones using same apple ID and notes
Unless I missed something about this situation, you don't need to delete anything. Open Settings, then Mail, Contacts, and Calendars. Double tap your iCloud account, and enable Mail. You will be prompted to create an iCloud email address; do so, and you've got one. Now, go to applied.apple.com, sign in, go to your account settings, and change your email address to your iCloud one. If the goal is to add an iCloud address to your Apple account, you just did it without needing to erase anything. Again, sorry if I missed something here and am not giving the instructions for what you are trying to do. -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 9, 2014, at 10:05 AM, Woody Anna Dresner wadres...@att.net wrote: Hello, Delete your iCloud account and then choose to create a new one. Re: any google apps for the iPhone that act like ciri
Hi Casey, There is a applevis podcast were a gentlemen compared the Google Search to Siri. I'm pretty sure it was the recent versions. He found advantages to both. I like having options so I have the Google search on my phone. I find I don't use it as Siri is built in and even where the Google app was a bit faster it was not worth the time to load it and keep it running. The podcast will give you a good indicator of the differences. If I had a Iphone 4 I would find the app useful. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Sandra, your post is an example of the imaginative and far-reaching messages I enjoy reading on this list. I am so glad folks are experimenting with the dictation option. I admit to distrusting it since it often makes errors which users do not catch through proofreading, and this sometimes makes them appear careless. Nevertheless, I agree it is a very worthwhile service. Perhaps more than any other group, It benefits those who have difficulty typing or cannot do so at all. I stopped the dictation function and waited to see how much of the conversation my phone had picked up. It actually did very well, probably, digitising about 30/40% of our conversation. Something I noticed was that when my partner spoke the dictation made a new paragraph For him. So, what do I conclude? RE: Thanks and some Positive News
Hi Terrie, I suspect you had the speak selections enabled which voices certain things whether VO is on or off. It kind of annoyed my sighted wife that her device would start speaking out of the blue. I think that may have added to the confusion for you. I think you will find iOS 7 much better and more stable once you get it set up. Once you upgrade, back the phone up again and perhaps the ATT folks can do the diagnostic to make sure things are running correctly and if not, they can wipe the phone and reinstall iOS 7. Good luck, Richard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Terrie Terlau Sent: Sunday, February 9, 2014 7:24 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Thanks and some Positive News Hello Kimber, Alex, Patti, Alan, Christopher, Larry, and Sieghard, I want to thank all of you for your thoughtful suggestions. RE: Thanks and some Positive News
Hi Terry, The fact that VO showed as off but seemed to be partly working may not be anything more than a mess-up in iOS. The restart probably fixed it. I know setting up a phone from scratch is a pain, but when you upgrade to iOS 7 you might want to consider not restoring from your backup. Issues can get backed up and if you upgrade and set up as a new phone you won't risk that. Of course that would mean any text message history you may have will be lost, not sure if that is a big concern. You can, of course, resync your apps from iTunes or redownload them and resync any music you may have etc. Regards, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Terrie Terlau Sent: Sunday, February 09, 2014 7:24 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Thanks and some Positive News Hello Kimber, Alex, Patti, Alan, Christopher, Larry, and Sieghard, I want to thank all of you for your thoughtful suggestions. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Sieghard and Anna, I am aware of this time cut-off. Which is why I was suggesting that a specific app would be necessary. For example, an app that recorded, let's say, an hour of speech. Then, in 32nd chunks, would digitise that speech into text. Often, when I'm composing a long email message or something in notes, I may be dictating for an hour at least! Obviously, I break off and let the dictation function digitise what I have spoken. So, if this can be done in an automated fashion within a large section of recording, I see no reason why it shouldn't work! Taking the idea little further: perhaps, using drop vox, lectures/meetings could be uploaded and not processed until required. In this way not too much space will be taken up on the phone. I don't know much about these things, but, perhaps, it would be possible for this special app (which doesn't exist yet) to stream only in 32nd pieces Are you following my drift at all? Still musing, Sandy Sent from my iPhone On 9 Feb 2014, at 16:06, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Sandra, Keep in mind that currently SIRI/Dictation is limited to 30 seconds at a time. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Good afternoon Craig, Thank you for your kind words and I must admit to feeling rather inventive today! You should see the storm I'm stirring up on our local guide dog list!! I know what you mean about Siri slips. Some of them can be truly imaginative! But, often, a word such as all is inserted instead of the word or. This can, indeed, give an impression of bad grammar. Yet, because the two words sound similar, it is easily overlooked when reading through text. I have learnt, over time, to be quite vigilant, but, nevertheless, The odd one still gets passed me. I will say this though, if you're lucky enough to have the sort of accent that Siri is expecting to understand, its recognition can be truly amazing! I, four example, though living in Ireland, I'm originally from England and my accent is the sort of BBC one. So, plummy Daniel, understands me very well! Are used to be a power user of Bluetooth keyboards alongside my iPhone. Now, however, I rarely get them out, choosing to use Siri all the time instead. But, back to the main point, I am envisaging the potential of the dictation function with a specially adapted app, and more as being useful in the mainstream. As I said before, students, business people, doctors clinic attendees, and so on, all of these people might find it very useful. Because, in my humble opinion, if something works well for the mainstream, it will be allowed to grow and improve at an exponential rate. Then, those people who may have much greater need of it, with disabilities etc, may well find they have an excellent new tool to play with. Just my thoughts, Sandy Sent from my iPhone On 9 Feb 2014, at 16:36, BrianMiller brianrmille...@gmail.com wrote: On a related note, does anyone know what the maximum length of a memo one can record with the built in memo recorder app on the iPhone? Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Does something such as Vlingo have that time restriction? Actually, I'm not even sure Vlingo is still around, but it worked very well. Re: battery drainage
The two biggest drains on the iPhone are the Bluetooth radio and WI_FI.. It's easy to tell Siri, turn bluetooth off and she'll say I turned Bluetooth off. Do the same with WI_FI. Those are the two biggest battery drains. So if you have no ear peace connected to Bluetooth and your away from your home network, you don't need the WI_FI either. Re: battery drainage
I agree wi-fi and bluetooth can drain your battery, but I don't think they're the two biggest sources of battery drainage. I think screen brightness would be by far the largest drain on your battery, so that's the first thing I'd recommend lowering. I have auto brightness turned off on my iPhone, and I have brightness set to 10%. This is still bright enough so when I ask a sighted person for help, they can still see the screen. I'm not sure where all of these would rank, but automatically fetching data, receiving push notifications and using location services would also be pretty high up on the list of things that drain your battery the most. there are many such articles on tips to control the battery drain on your phone, but one such article is at http://www.businessinsider.com/better-iphone-battery-life-2013-5 Finally, remember that your iPhone and it's battery are meant to be used. Turn off those features you don't need or use, but don't cripple the functionality of your device by slavishly turning off everything that consumes some battery. App to Convert Audio to Text? was RE: The potential of the dictation function?
I hate to post a me too message but I was thinking this morning if an app existed that would let you convert a spoken audio file into text. I know that programs such as Dragon Naturally speaking do something similar with the spoken word as does Dictate as Sandy discusses in her message below. With the technology existing to do the conversion, it would seem possible that for example, an mp3 file made of a lecture or other spoken content could be processed and converted to text. Does anyone know of an app or a computer program that does such a thing? Alternatively, I would be interested in an app that would let you record and would also allow you to convert what was recorded to text maybe later after some offline processing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Does anyone know of an app or a computer program that does such a thing? Alternatively, I would be interested in an app that would let you record and would also allow you to convert what was recorded to text maybe later after some offline processing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't SIRI actually send the audio input to voice recognition servers? That being the case; turning off WI-FI will cause any additional SIRI commands to be sent over the mobile network and could result in additional network access charges. Point is, if you plan on using SIRI to any extent you probably do not want to disable WI-FI. Holland's Boy, Bill - Clothes make the man. Re: The potential of the dictation function?
Remember, it is all done on remote servers, the device would have to send the entire sound file away to get the text back. I think there is a size limit, whihc interprets as a maximum time limit for recordings. Folks using dictation have often commented that if they keep bits relatively short, then add to an input with further dictations, it works more reliably. Just a thought. Re: battery drainage
Actually, the sole biggest drain on the battery is the GPS receiver. When the GPS receiver is running, one can expect to get two to three hours of battery life. The second biggest drain is the iPhone's phone transceiver. The third biggest drain on the battery life is most likely the combination of the touch-screen and the back-light. Turning the back-light down to its lowest setting will significantly help. Of course, locking the screen is the only way to deactivate the touch-screen. Wifi is probably the fourth biggest battery drain, but only when wifi is actually carrying an internet signal. I leave wifi on and, unless I have active throughput, the battery drain is rather minimal. After wifi, the fancy graphical parallax features provide a decent battery hit. This can be disabled in accessibility. Though many do not believe it, Bluetooth is actually a quite minimal battery drain. If no bluetooth device is connected, the drain to the battery is about 1% per hour. When a bluetooth device is connected, the drain ranges from 3% to 7% per hour, depending on how strongly the iPhone needs to push the bluetooth signal. For instance, the closer the device is to the iPhone, the less signal strength is required. That said, the exception is when using an earpiece, and the iPhone is against the body on the other side of the body. The human body is made primarily of water, and water absorbs radio signals. Therefore, the iPhone is required to bump the bluetooth antenna up to maximum which gives a very significant signal drain, and skews battery observation / testing with bluetooth devices. Re: battery drainage
Radio signals are radio signals, no matter the source. That said, wifi and bluetooth are minimal drains unless there is actual throughput. And, mobile data requires more battery drain than wifi because the signal is weaker so the iDevice needs to push the signal with more power. Be ware of a bogus email wanting you to confirm your Apple ID
Hi all, I just received an email with the following subject. **JUNK** please verify the email address accociated with your Apple ID What they want you to do is to go to a site and confirm your ID which they say will be taken offline in 24 hours if you don't do this. First of all. I have several email accounts and this is not an address which apple has, so they would not write me at this address. Second, I doubt this is anything like what Apple would write anyway. Third. If you check the spelling of the subject line, not to mention the word junk in the text, you will discover that whomever wrote this does not know how to spell. Anyway, I just wanted to warn people that they should be very careful of this kind of hack attempt. Neal -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: any google apps for the iPhone that act like ciri
I think they are both good in some areas, and disappointing in others. That is why I call google search a complement to searie. When one can't do something, maybe the other one can. For example, I can get google search to give me addresses and phone numbers for local businesses, but I have better luck getting searie to give me sports scores and schedules. Also, now that I have turned on enough stuff, Searie will tell me, quite accurately, the address of where I am, where google search just gives me a map, with I am sure, my location plotted, which doesn't do me much good, being that I can't see it. If I ever were to find myself in a situation where I am really, genuinely lost, I know I can rely on searie more so that google search to tell me where I am. Finally, in their own ways, both of them are disappointing to me.It doesn't take much background noise at all to confuse them and make them much less reliable. When I got my iPhone 5, I wanted to learn to use it myself, rather than relying on searie to do everything for me. I am glad I did. I do believe the future is in the future for both these apps, they will get better quickly, with each new update. Problems with the ap store
When I go to buy an ap, and I enter my password, it says this ap cannot be purchased at this time, please try again later. I’ve tried resetting my network settings, and I definitely have the right password. The thing is some aps are downloading after a while because a few I tried to install are now on my phone. Re: battery drainage
It is still possible that their is a defect in the persons phone. My wife has a 5 and I have a 5s. She has nothing running where as I have 5 or 6 apps on, and Bluetooth on. My phone will run for a couple of days without needing a charge while hers will only run for a few hours. She can't go to work and make it home on a single charge. Therefore I contend that a defect exists in her phone. On 2/9/14, Andy Baracco w...@socal.rr.com wrote: Hard to go without wireless, because so many things we do depend on connectivity. Re: Justin who did a podcast on the Logitech k760 keyboard
Hello Craig Thanks much. I listened to the podcast and most of my questions were answered. I'm not familiar with the podcast you mentioned, but David Woodbridge, who works for Vision Australia, has a podcast on the Logitech K760 posted to the AppleVis website. David does fine work. He can be contacted through writing to the Contact mailbox of Vision Australia. Messages will be forwarded to him from that mailbox. How to update IOS on original iPod touch
guys, Apologies if I've posted this twice. I just inherited my wife's iPod Touch which she bought in 2009. It is running IOS 4. I want to connect it to my iTunes account. I realize this will wipe out everything of hers that's on the device. that's fine. I just don't know how to update the IOS. I guess I'll have to connect it with a cable and look under Devices in iTunes. Is that right? Also, is there any danger of wiping out my wife's e-mail when I do this? she has a bunch of e-mail accounts which are iMAP on her current iPhone 4 and iPad 2, but which were POP3 on her iPod Touch. Again, any issues here? Thanks, Kevin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Post a new message to VIPhone by emailing viphone@googlegroups.com. Re: Alarm Clock setting when you don't have Siri
Try Alarmed which is free with extras as an in-app purchase and is very accessible. Regards Chris On 10/02/2014 06:36, Van Lant Family wrote: I'm on an Iphone 4 with no Siri. Is it pretty easy to set an alarm clock (for waking up) or do you recommend a particular app? Staying at a hotel this week and I've never set an alarm on my phone.
