As far as I know I did nothing. If I press the home button it says that I have
some notifications and the time. Apparently, the pone is not mute.

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the bases, did
you flip the mute switch? If not, try going to Settings Sound, and making
sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate and
ringtone.

I'll try.

First, find your two volume buttons, on the left side of the phone when you are
holding it normally (home button up, power port facing you). Now, just above
those two round buttons is a long, thin ridge. This ridge is the mute switch,
and it can be pushed either toward the screen, or away from the screen, toward
the rear panel of the phone. Take a fingernail or finger pad and gently push it
one way or the other. It is probably muted right now, meaning that it should
move toward the screen. To be clear, the ridge runs parallel with the side of
the phone, and the direction in which it can be moved is perpendicular to that.
Put another way, if you were to hold the phone so the volume buttons and mute
switch are facing you, the switch can be moved left or right.

Sorry, I meant the front as the screen, the back as the rear panel where the
camera, logo, and so on are. If you place the phone flat on a table, with the
screen facing up and the home button toward you, the switch can move toward or
away from the tabletop. Hopefully that makes more sense.

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try flipping the
switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice versa, not up
and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted, and near the
front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it makes a noise,
it is not muted, but if it is muted it will vibrate twice.

Hello,

Yes, you can delete individual messages in a conversation, but it's not the
most intuitive thing to
do with Voiceover.
Here is what I do:

1. Find the message you want to delete.
2. Double tap and hold on the right side of the screen, then after the triple
tone swipe across to
the left side of the screen without lifting your finger between the double tap
and hold and the
swipe.
3. You should hear Voiceover say Forward, menu item.
4. Swipe left once and you are on delete, Voiceover will say Delete, menu
item.
5. Double tap on delete, you will be prompted Delete message, it cannot be
undone, then you have
to confirm by double tapping another delete button.
If you swipe left once more when you get to delete, you find a third option
which is Copy.
This could definitely use a bit of improvement, Facebook should really just
implement the action
rotor for deleting, forwarding, copying etc.

Regards,
Sieghard

Itunes, my new PC and my IPod 5 gen.

When I install ITunes on my new PC using Win7, what will happen to my music
when I plug in my IPod? I haven't subscribed to Match, Will all my music be
removed from my Pod or will the reverse happen and it will be transferred on
the ITunes Library on the new PC?
I will have great difficulty copying the library from the old computer to the

broken and ITunes refuses to work properly without it.

2014-07-16 Thread Thom Spittle
Hi Marie,

You can transfer your music from your old PC to your new one with a thumb
drive or external hard drive, unless you have tons of music.

Also, if you sync your music using a playlist, you can move just the
playlist music to your new PC to start.

If you need any more help, let me know,

When I install ITunes on my new PC using Win7, what will happen to my music
when I plug in my IPod? I haven't subscribed to Match, Will all my music be
removed from my Pod or will the reverse happen and it will be transferred on
the ITunes Library on the new PC?

I will have great difficulty copying the library from the old computer to
the new if that's what I have to do because its connection to the Internet

Re: connecting to the network

2014-07-16 Thread Ted Filteau
Turning the phone off and on is probably the best way to get it to
reconnect. You can also try envoking say the weather app which will
cause it to look for your network and ask if you want to join it if
that's how your phone is set up.

Grace,

If you don't find the mute switch, it may be that your phone is in a case.
If it is, there should be a little rubber flap door over it. Otter box
cases cover the mute switch.

I'll try.

First, find your two volume buttons, on the left side of the phone when you
are holding it normally (home button up, power port facing you). Now, just
above those two round buttons is a long, thin ridge. This ridge is the mute
switch, and it can be pushed either toward the screen, or away from the
screen, toward the rear panel of the phone. Take a fingernail or finger pad
and gently push it one way or the other. It is probably muted right now,
meaning that it should move toward the screen. To be clear, the ridge runs
parallel with the side of the phone, and the direction in which it can be
moved is perpendicular to that. Put another way, if you were to hold the
phone so the volume buttons and mute switch are facing you, the switch can
be moved left or right.

Sorry, I meant the front as the screen, the back as the rear panel where the
camera, logo, and so on are. If you place the phone flat on a table, with
the screen facing up and the home button toward you, the switch can move
toward or away from the tabletop. Hopefully that makes more sense.

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try flipping
the switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice versa,
not up and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted, and
near the front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it
makes a noise, it is not muted, but if it is muted it will vibrate twice.

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the bases,
did you flip the mute switch? If not, try going to Settings Sound, and
making sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate
and ringtone.

Re: Messaging question.

2014-07-16 Thread Bill Gallik
VoiceMemo does have a Share feature that allows you to attach an audio clip
to your message. However, be aware of the following:

- You must create the audio clip via VoiceMemo and then Share as a message
from within the VoiceMemo app. There isn't a way to make a VoiceMemo
recording, then use the Message app to go fetch that recording. This is too
bad because there may be circumstances where a reply message might well serve
to include such a recording.

- Obviously, the recipient must have messaging services to receive said message
and be able to open an M4A audio file.

RE: Cover recommendations for latest iPad mini

2014-07-16 Thread SSEric
I do not have the Logitech, but a different brand.

The keyboard size is not a lot different than a netbook. The one thing to
remember, though, is that, unlike a netbook/notebook computer, the Ipad
cover is not hinged so that it will stay open on a table or on your lap. So,
you have to plan on opening it flat so that both the keyboard and Ipad are
lying on the surface or be able to remove the keyboard from the case and use
them separately. This is how mine works. The keyboard is a separate piece
that is held in the case by magnets. It does have a kickstand on the back to
prop the Ipad on a table, but does not work on your lap. I am not sure if
the Logitech keyboard can be removed from the case or not.

I would suggest either trying one in a store or purchasing from somewhere
with a good return policy. I actually have found with mine, the same as with
keyboards for the phone, I don't need the keyboard very often at all, but it
is with me all the time, and the added bulk and weight, no matter how
slight, are just not worth the trouble. So, for those few occasions I do
want a keyboard I would rather have something like the Apple Bluetooth, etc.
at hand over the more compact cover type.

I have a couple of cases I use interchangeably. I use a smart cover by

that just covers the front, but when you pull it back, it unlocks the unit
then when you put it back, it locks it.

I also have the OtterBox case which is bulky and heavy but it works.

The last I have is the LifeProof case. It is a good waterproof case, but

I'd strongly agree with Lois about sticking with Apple brand cables even if
they cost more. I've tried some of those third party after-market ones from
Amazon and believe me the ones I got were not worth their cheaper price. In

Re: Brighthouse tv app and DVR?

I would assume this is how the regular TWCTV one that isn't Brighthouse Time

RE: Ringtone apps

2014-07-16 Thread Jennie Facer
The app I am thinking of is developed by MobGem. I believe that is how it is
spelled. What you do is play the sound, then you have to press the download
or close button to get back to the list of songs and it can be a little
cumbersome to do. They do have some neat sounds.

Hi Jenny,

The app you mentioned, Ringtones Unlimited, is it by a developer called
iHandy Inc.?

If so it appears that it's just another app like Ringtone Maker, Ringtone
Wizard or Ringtone Architect. All of these apps basically allow you to pick
a song from your music library, select a portion of that song and convert it
to a ringtone. You then have to either email this ringtone to yourself or
get it out of the app using iTunes file sharing, then save it to your
ringtones folder, import it to your tones library in iTunes and sync it back
to your phone.

There simply is no way to get ringtones to a non-jailbroken iPhone without
using iTunes.

The only exception is if you buy the ringtone from iTunes, then it's
downloaded to your phone and made available.

I also heard that if you use Apple's Garage Band app you can make a ringtone
and somehow make it available on your phone and all of it from the app
without having to sync through iTunes. I have not tried this so it's just
hear say.

Sieghard

Hello,
You bet you can.
You can take a screenshot of anything that's on the screen. Just put the
page or item on your screen then press Home and Power buttons at the same
time. You will hear a shutter like sound. You now have a picture of what
ever it is.

MonoPrice is great. They often have the best prices and sell quality

work, but you can order stuff through there. They also offer will call if
you happen to live close to a MonoPrice warehouse. This is what I usually
do. Order one day and pick up the order the next day.

My lightning cable for my IPhone 4s is slowly going out on me.

If you have a 4S then you don't have a Lightning cable, but the older 30-Pin
cable. As others mentioned you can buy them at an Apple Store if you have
one nearby or the Apple Online Store, you can get them at most larger
electronics stores or on Amazon. I also like www.monoprice.com, they do sell
third party cables, but I bought several Lightning cables for my 5S and they
all work fine. A 10 foot Lightning cable from Monoprice was I believe about

$10.

RE: Ringtone apps

2014-07-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jen and others,

OK, now with the correct developer, here is the app Jen referred to:

1500 Free Ringtones! - Music, Sound Effects, Funny alerts and caller ID
tones

Price: Free

App Store Link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/1500-free-ringtones!-music/id326407535?mt=8

Remember that you still have to use iTunes to get the ringtones to your
device, here is something from the What's New section:

It's now easier to get your tones! We no longer email you the tone. Instead,
the tone is saved to your device. However, you still need access to a
computer to load your ringtone into your device sound settings for use.

This sounds to me that the ringtone is downloaded into the app and you
probably have to use iTunes file sharing or maybe FTP to save the ringtone
to your computer, then add it to your tones library and sync it back to you
riPhone.

Despite the fact that Apple announced extensibility for iOS 8 which means
developers have more ways to share information and data, there was no
mention for allowing the downloading of ringtones directly to the phone. I
guess we can hope that maybe this will come in iOS 9.

Sieghard

There simply is no way to get ringtones to a non-jailbroken iPhone without
using iTunes.

The only exception is if you buy the ringtone from iTunes, then it's
downloaded to your phone and made available.

I also heard that if you use Apple's Garage Band app you can make a ringtone
and somehow make it available on your phone and all of it from the app
without having to sync through iTunes. I have not tried this so it's just
hear say.

Re: My phone vibrates instead of ringing; what can I do to change it?

2014-07-16 Thread Alan Paganelli
Ok let me have a go at it here as there seems to be a failure to
communicate.Follow these steps to check the mute switch.

1 Hold your iPhone in your hand so that the power button you use to turn your
phone on is in the top right-hand corner. The home button should be on the
flat edge of your iPhone in the center of that edge. The volume buttons should
now be on the left side of your iPhone one button on top of the other.

2 Now find the 2 buttons we just mentioned and move your finger up slightly.
You will feel a tab sticking out. This little tab is a switch. When you use
your fingernail to push the switch in one direction or the other and the
direction of travel will be front to back or back to front. You should hear
one of 2 announcements. the single beep of the vibrater and voice over
announces muted. Flip the switch in the other direction and it should say
unmutted. You want it to say unmuted.

Note: if you have your phone in some kind of case, it may be harder to follow
these instructions and the switch may be in a recessed hole. If possible,
remove your phone from the case and it should be much easier to locate where
this switch is at. Once you know it's location, it will be easier to find it
again with the case back on.

Holler if you need more help. It can be a little frustraighting when you get
your first iPhone but the good news is, it's well worth it.

The mute switch will not affect VoiceOver's speech or sounds. Try flipping
the switch; it moves from the back of the phone to the front, or vice versa,
not up and down. When it is nearer the back of the phone, that is muted, and
near the front is un-muted. An easy way to tell is to plug it in; if it makes a
noise, it is not muted, but if it is muted it will vibrate twice.

I know this might be basic, but in the interest of covering all the

making sure your sound volume is up, and that the ringer is set to vibrate and

Hi Jerry,

You said the following:
My lightning cable for my IPhone 4s is slowly going out on me.

If you have a 4S then you don't have a Lightning cable, but the older 30-Pin
cable. As others mentioned you can buy them at an Apple Store if you have
one nearby or the Apple Online Store, you can get them at most larger
electronics stores or on Amazon. I also like www.monoprice.com, they do sell
third party cables, but I bought several Lightning cables for my 5S and they
all work fine. A 10 foot Lightning cable from Monoprice was I believe about
$12 so if you want a 3 or 6 foot 30-Pin cable it would probably be $8 or
$10.

Re: Brighthouse tv app and DVR?

2014-07-16 Thread Brent Harding
Well, the one I have for TWC, there's the 5 tabs at the bottom for Guide, on
demand, Live TV, DVR, and settings. You can hit that on demand tab, and there
should be a search button towards the top of the screen where you can search
for your program you want to watch. When you do find it in the results screen,
there are play buttons next to each one when you swipe through to get the
player. Otherwise you could double tap the title of the show and then a screen
comes up that would have a watch now button that does the same thing. I don't
know if it will let you put it on the TV though because I only have analog
right now, but you should be able to get whatever shows that are available on
the package you have by listening on the app with on demand.

I would assume this is how the regular TWCTV one that isn't Brighthouse Time
Warner works too. It seems like TWC did a pretty good job making the on demand
and live TV sections accessible. I guess I'm glad that I didn't waste the extra
money on having DVR, as I've heard some of them aren't real easy for us to just
arrow down the list of shows, watch them, and hit delete after.

RE: Text Attributes and VO?

2014-07-16 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,
I have a Bluetooth keyboard. I just tried this and it didn't work. I think
that this command may only be for VO on the Mac. I don't think that there
is a VO command for getting text attributes on IOS.
Thanks,

Thanks, Alia. Bill, I'm assuming that this particular command requires a
keyboard. :) Let's find out if there is a verbosity setting to make this
doable on the touch-screen. I donow have a keyboard, so this will help
greatly.

Yes, the stock cables that come with your idevice are not the best. The
casing, especially at the ends where the cable meets the plug tends to get
messed up. I like to buy other brand cables I can't think off the top of my

one can buy off the speed dots website are pretty good.

Seriously, I have had an iPhone 4, a 4S and now a 5S and in those 4 years I
had one cable go bad on me and it was a cheapo from Costco. Not a single
Apple 30-Pin or Lightning cable quit on me before.

If you have apple care, the cables are included. I hate those cables, and
have gone through four of them in two years, each was replaced free by Apple

MonoPrice is great. They often have the best prices and sell quality
product. Their iOS app is more or less accessible too. It could use some
work, but you can order stuff through there. They also offer will call if
you happen to live close to a MonoPrice warehouse. This is what I usually
do. Order one day and pick up the order the next day.

A 10 foot Lightning cable from Monoprice was I believe about
$12 so if you want a 3 or 6 foot 30-Pin cable it would probably be $8 or
$10.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Re: Cover recommendations for latest iPad mini

2014-07-16 Thread Alan Paganelli
Best Buy, Walmart, Radio Shack and pretty much everybody else who sells
products for iPads carry these QWERTY cases. They pretty much all work the
same way. Your iPad sits in a holder on the top portion wile a QWERTY
keyboard is on the other half making it look like a laptop. The layout of
specialty keys may not be laid out exactly the same in all cases. On mine
for example the semicolon key is the apostrophe key. I like that better but
when using my windows computer it screws me up. Granted it's a minor
annoyance and after the oops moment I'm ok with it and if this will be your
only computer you'll get use to it.

In iOS7, VoiceOver Help with dots-1-3 chord, then press any key combo on

Braille entry on the iPad

2014-07-16 Thread Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

which apps for Braille entry work on the iPad? MBraille doesn't seem to offer
the piano mode which is described in the help section, and I never liked the
away mode. Perkinput doesn't do more than calibratiom, and brailletouch is only
available on the iPhone, according to their documentation. I thought it would
be possible to use the larger screen for a more convenient writing method but
guess this is not the case.

Re: Braille entry on the iPad

2014-07-16 Thread Jennie Facer
What is it that you don't like about mBraille on the iPad? You set it on a desk
or your lap and use it like you would a Perkins Braille writer. The best way to
get use out of it is to turn VoiceOver off and then use it with its
self-voicing capabilities.

Just my two cents worth,

Re: 1500 Ringtones - free and paid versions + 2 more custom alert and text tone apps

2014-07-16 Thread Jennie Facer
Yes you are right. You only get I think it is three ringtones with the free
app. I want to tell you a little trick with this app. When you play a ringtone,
there are two buttons you have to find. One is the download button and one is
the close button. You have to press either one of these buttons before you can
play any other ringtones of this app. If I remember, these buttons are on the
top right of the screen, and you may have to use your finger to slide around
and find them. They are hard to find by just flicking left or right.

Hope this helps,

difference is between the free and paid app, the free app does not mention
“In-App Purchases” and I believe if there is an unlock feature that it has to
do so. The only difference I could see is in the first line of the

“Download the app and get 1500 unlimited free ringtone downloads.”
 The free version says:
“Download to get free ringtone downloads.”
I assume that the free version has some sort of limit as to how many of the

Re: Brighthouse tv app and DVR?

2014-07-16 Thread Brent Harding
Oh, so they're not like the DirecTV or Uverse ones where you can just hit
some equivalent to a my DVR button, hit OK on the first show, get it, and
then maybe when it's done options to delete or replay come where you just
arrow down a few times and hit OK? I know on some systems, if you let more
than one episode of a show accumulate, they go into folders, which would
make a mess if you're totally blind.

Hello Brent,

You know, this is something that I take for granted.

I have a Time Warner DVR and use it daily for both scheduling and watching
television shows.

Time Warner is currently in the process of upgrading their DVR software
across the country. The roll-out, as I understand it, is anything but
consistent and many of the reps are unaware of the change.

Three months or so ago, I had a question about the new version of the
software so I stopped by a TWC office to make an enquiry. The head tech guy
told me I was mistaken and that there was no new software being done on any
of the DVRs. After about 10 minutes of him talking down to me as if I were
an idiot, I returned home, unplugged my DVR, and took it into that office.
To make a long story short, I don't think he or anyone else at that location
will be doubting anything I say anytime soon (smile).

Anyway, I happen to be one whose DVR received the software upgrade and, as
much as I like to bash TWC, I have to admit that they have improved the
readability of the DVR menus by increasing contrast, using simpler fonts,
and allowing all functions to be access via arrow keys.

Be that as it may, were it not for the fact that I have a big screen
television and can see just enough to make out the selection bar and
onscreen keyboard, when searching, the device would be totally useless to
me.

As I stated at the beginning, the fact that I can use my DVR, at all, is
something that I take for granted. I just happen to live very close to a
Time Warner regional hub. Later today, I will stop in and make a formal
written request for added accessibility.

Mark

I would assume this is how the regular TWCTV one that isn't Brighthouse Time
Warner works too. It seems like TWC did a pretty good job making the on
demand and live TV sections accessible. I guess I'm glad that I didn't waste
the extra money on having DVR, as I've heard some of them aren't real easy
for us to just arrow down the list of shows, watch them, and hit delete
after.

If you switch from Verizon to T-Mobile, unless your phone is unlocked,

Sorting books in PDF for iTunes

2014-07-16 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I've got an enormous amount of books in pdf that I wish to import to
iTunes, but before I do so, I would like to know if there's a program that
could help me properly edit the file information for cleaner sorting? Books
I've imported in the past have been dumped into one massive folder where I
edit them )artist/author, album/book) for better organization.

I figure there has to be a more efficient means of doing this. I use MP3Tag
to edit my mp3 files. Is there perhaps an application that will allow the
same for PDF files?

Thanks,

you just arrow down a few times and hit OK? I know on some systems, if
you let more than one episode of a show accumulate, they go into
folders, which would make a mess if you're totally blind.

Subject: RE: Brighthouse tv app and DVR?

Hello Brent,

You know, this is something that I take for granted.

I have a Time Warner DVR and use it daily for both scheduling and
watching television shows.

The head tech
guy told me I was mistaken and that there was no new software being done
on any of the DVRs. After about 10 minutes of him talking down to me as
if I were an idiot, I returned home, unplugged my DVR, and took it into
that office. To make a long story short, I don't think he or anyone else
at that location will be doubting anything I say anytime soon (smile).

Anyway, I happen to be one whose DVR received the software upgrade and,
as much as I like to bash TWC, I have to admit that they have improved
the readability of the DVR menus by increasing contrast, using simpler
fonts, and allowing all functions to be access via arrow keys.

Be that as it may, were it not for the fact that I have a big screen
television and can see just enough to make out the selection bar and
onscreen keyboard, when searching, the device would be totally useless
to me.

As I stated at the beginning, the fact that I can use my DVR, at all, is
something that I take for granted. I just happen to live very close to
a Time Warner regional hub. Later today, I will stop in and make a
formal written request for added accessibility.

Mark

I would assume this is how the regular TWCTV one that isn't Brighthouse
Time Warner works too. It seems like TWC did a pretty good job making
the on demand and live TV sections accessible. I guess I'm glad that I
didn't waste the extra money on having DVR, as I've heard some of them
aren't real easy for us to just arrow down the list of shows, watch
them, and hit delete after.

Hi.
You can schedule recordings, but you cannot play them back, either on
your TV or your device. Consider calling their tech line and requesting
this feature, I have several times.

Hello, I am a time warner cable customer who uses the Brighthouse TV app
to watch TV around the house on my phone. I noticed there is a DVR tab
on the app but I do not have a DVR through them. Has anyone used the app
with a DVR? If so can you schedule recordings, and play the recordings
back on either your phone or us the phone as a remote to control the DVR?

Re: 1500 Ringtones - free and paid versions + 2 more custom alert and text tone apps

2014-07-16 Thread Lea Langley
Hi Jenny and all, just to let you all know when I played the ring tones in the
1500 ring tones Unlimited app, you don't have to hit any close buttons or
download buttons. You just can go from one to the other select them and play
them. They will automatically play. God bless, Wren Langley

Yes you are right. You only get I think it is three ringtones with the free
app. I want to tell you a little trick with this app. When you play a
ringtone, there are two buttons you have to find. One is the download button
and one is the close button. You have to press either one of these buttons
before you can play any other ringtones of this app. If I remember, these
buttons are on the top right of the screen, and you may have to use your
finger to slide around and find them. They are hard to find by just flicking
 left or right.

 Hope this helps,

 Jenn

 Hello again,

OK, so the app Jen mentioned and for which I posted a link in my last
message also has a paid version for 99 Cents.
I have carefully read both app descriptions and I’m not totally sure what
the difference is between the free and paid app, the free app does not
mention “In-App Purchases” and I believe if there is an unlock feature that
it has to do so. The only difference I could see is in the first line of the
description. For the paid version it clearly says:
“Download the app and get 1500 unlimited free ringtone downloads.”
 The free version says:
“Download to get free ringtone downloads.”
I assume that the free version has some sort of limit as to how many of the
1500 tones you can get, but as I said, I’m not sure.

There are also 2 other apps by the same developer, one is for custom alert

Would someone please send me the email of one of the list owners off list.
I'm still not receiving list mail from this group. I've probably received a

contact me in my last message to the list several days ago, and haven't
heard from anyone.

Please email off list because list mail isn't getting to me.

Thanks.
