Re: Free Book for Users of iBooks/Mastering the Macintosh with Voiceover

2014-07-20 Thread Wayne Merritt
Thank you from me as well for this book recommendation. I will be
getting a Mac eventually, though it is on the long range plan since
they are a bit expensive. This book will ehlp with my transition
though. By the time I get one, a newer model or two will probably have
come out. This will at least give me a foundation to start from.

Wayne

Hi Joseph, what iOS device are you using? iBooks should have no edit field
to worry about. Simply touch the screen somewhere in the text area (or
left/right swipe to get there) then swipe down with two fingers to begin
continuous reading. VoiceOver will continuously read the book without you
even needing to turn the pages.

iBooks is such a headache that I didn't get beyond page 3 before I concluded
that I was not going to struggle with the iOS' annoying edit field nonsense.

I guess you can guess how I feel about having to enter an edit field then
accidentally be taken out of it only to struggle to return where I left off
in my document. I love my iDevice, but I really, really, and I mean really
dislike the annoying edit field one must enter when navigating or editing a

All programs that have video do it. The weird thing I get with the Time

because it's video (or has video components), the programme you're
watching on iPlayer stops when the screen is locked. TuneIn, being audio
only, does not and need not.

Dear Listers,

I was listening/watching a programmes on BBC iplayer today and as soon
as I locked my ipad, the programme stopped playing. When I unlocked the
ipad, th the programme would resume playing. Is there a way / a setting
that I could tweak to continue listening to a programme while the ipad
is locked? I've been through the settings and I've failed to find
anything that would enable this to ahppen. With tune-in radio, I can
lock the screen and the radio will continue to play. But I don't seem
to be able to achieve the same thing with BBC iplayer.

because it's video (or has video components), the programme you're

Dear Listers,

I was listening/watching a programmes on BBC iplayer today and as soon
as I locked my ipad, the programme stopped playing. When I unlocked the
ipad, th the programme would resume playing. Is there a way / a setting
that I could tweak to continue listening to a programme while the ipad
is locked? I've been through the settings and I've failed to find
anything that would enable this to ahppen. With tune-in radio, I can
lock the screen and the radio will continue to play. But I don't seem
to be able to achieve the same thing with BBC iplayer.

That would be great if every book in the collection had the chapters marked.
Some of the older books only have a marker to get you to the start of the

RE: Having trouble with the us air ways app

2014-07-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kimber,

I find that electronic boarding passes are only useful if you travel with
carry-on aggage only. If you have to check in a bag or suitcase you have to
go to the counter anyways to get your bag processed and tagged and then you
might as well get a printed boarding pass.
I fly at least 4 or 5 times in Canada and usually once a year in November to
Las Vegas to a trade show and since my wife is Filipina and still in the
Philippines waiting for her immigration to Canada I am just about to go on
my third trip there this year and I find electronic boarding passes most
useful for my domestic flights when I usually don't have any check-in
luggage. If I can check in and get my boarding pass (the Air Canada app
let's me save it straight to the Passbook app where I can show it in the
lock screen) I can show up as little as 10 or 15 minutes before the regular
boarding time because I can walk straight through security and go to my
gate. Of course this works only at airports like Vancouver which is agood
size airport but where I know I can get through security in 5 or 10 minutes
for flights inside Canada.

Good luck,
Sieghard

The boarding passes are not such a big deal going, but coming home it would
be handy to get my boarding passes on my phone.

I will definitely be contacting US Air about their app's lack of
accessibility .

Sent from my iPhone hello, I finally have my first apartment here in St.
Louis. I have selected charter communications to be my TV/phone/Internet
provider. I was wondering, how accessible is iPhone app for charter? Can you
use all of its capabilities? I mostly interested in the on-demand lineup.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: mini bluetooth keyboard

Hi,

The only keyboard that doesn't have the keys on both sides of the keyboard is
the Logitech 810 or other keyobards that do not connect the the mini in any
way. I don't know about the keyboards that connect to the iPads other than the
mini. I happen to have the mini 7, and I love this keyboard.

RE: Is Siri not availible on an ipad 2?

2014-07-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Donna,

I guess you are underestimating your iPad because if you have SIRI then you
have an iPad Third Generation not an iPad 2. I bought an iPad 2 for my Mom a
few years ago and it definitely does not have SIRI. Here is part of a support
article about SIRI which includes supported devices:

What is Siri?

Siri is the intelligent personal assistant that helps you get things done just
by asking. It allows you to use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings,
place phone calls, and more. But Siri isn't like traditional voice-recognition
software that requires you to remember keywords and speak specific commands.
Siri understands your natural speech, and it asks you questions if it needs
more information to complete a task.

Siri is available on these devices:

iPhone 4S or later

â—¾iPad 3rd generation or later

â—¾iPad mini

â—¾iPod touch (5th generation)

Link to the article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4992

Sieghard

Re: Controling a DVR with Slingbox?

2014-07-20 Thread Brent Harding
I think it's a graphical remote, and it just pops up the menus on the TV, and
you gouch the arrow up and down controls to operate it, so I highly doubt it
would be usable for more than switching channels. Back when, I thought about
getting one, just so I could stream the news when I was in a town where I don't
care for how they do their news, so I could hear my favorite local station
instead. Now, a couple of them at least stream the news, so I probably don't
need it any more.

While discussing my probable future tevo purchis with someone they told me
that you can use a Slingbox in conjunction with your cable companys DVR to
record and play shows. I saw a brief review of the Slingbox on this list but it
did not mention weather controling a cable company's DVR was accessible. If
anyone knows weather this is accessible on an iPhone I would appreciate it.

Re: TiVo app question

2014-07-20 Thread Brent Harding
Yeah, might be the same with TWC, but I probably need to establish whether or
not it is that Polaroid TV's only handle analog SAP and not on the digital side
because I heard that with regular cable at times, the TV will take a digital
signal if it isn't encrypted, and I can't tell which it is using on my local
channels. If I wasn't on the 8th floor and had a patio to put a DirecTV dish
on, I would probably go that route and be done with it because I know it works
to get SAP at my parents' place.

Verizon Fios about filing a complaint with the FCC as that is what I was told
is the only thing that gets them off their butt.

parents' DirecTV system, but here, the MTS button doesn't have much effect on
my TV. There could be a couple issues there in that the TV probably scanned in
the unencrypted digital channels that are available, and the Polaroid manuals
are vague on whether that feature does anything when on a digital channel. It
might be that TWC doesn't send it.

  Hey Brett,

It sounds like you might have the same set up to me cable cards from your
cable company that slide in to the Tivo box. For some reason I have never been
able to get the described video for anything. I have had a sighted person help
me to make sure to go to audio and change my preferred audio to secondary audio
programming when available and still nothing has ever recorded with described
video. Any clue if I am missing a step? I am in NYC so it is definitely being
aired in SAP, and I have looked at the ACB list of programs currently being
aired with DV but still nothing, and this happened on both Time Warner Cable
and Verizon FIOS did you have to do anything else to receive the feeds? I have
spent hours on the phone with Time Warner, then Verizon and Tivo and still
don't have an answer to why I am not getting it.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  Thanks,

I heard on the Tivo site that the Romeo Pro has the streaming built in.
I was thinking about getting one of these as opposed to the Time Warner DVR
because of being able to better control it with an app. Can you get into the
settings from the app, say to turn alternate audio on and off? The reason I
couldn't just have someone turn it on and leave it is because of channel 11.
During their programming that doesn't come from Fox, they play a continuous
loop on the SAP describing the feature and to return to main audio to hear the
programming. If you do have to do that from the remote, is it fairly easy to
toggle that setting? I heard that some of the remotes are programmable, so
maybe a macro could be made to make it a one-button toggle.

  Hey man,

Feel free to email me off list as I have had Tivo for over ten years.
Of course back then I could see, but now that I am a total I love Tivo and know
all the ins and outs. I do not have the Romeo as I have the previous box. Not
sure if you need the Stream with the Romeo as I thought it was built in, but to
answer your question. No you do not need the stream to start shows playing on
your TV by the app. It's fantastic as I use the app for everything. You will
need some sighted assistance the first time you set the box up, but after that
it is very rare that I need sighted assistance ever with my Tivo. Of course,
not being able to see you can't use all the features, but it is the best option
on the market that I have found as the app is mostly accessible. I have posted
here before with the app, I can view my entire tV guide by time or channel,
search for any shows and set a season pass or record by episode, you can see
upcoming episodes, edit your season pass list, start programs playing on your
TV by the iPhone, it's pretty fantastic and I use it every day. With the Stream
you can be on any Wifi network and connect to your Tivo to watch anything on
it.

mini bluetooth keyboard

Is anyone on the list using a mini bluetooth keyboard? I purchased today a Zag
mini iPad case with built-in bluetooth keyboard. I returned it because the
control and option keys were on opposite sides of the keyboard. I exchanged it
for a logitec. Well, low and behold, the control and option keys were again on
opposite sides of the keyboard. Is this standard for the mini keyboards? It
makes using VO keys quite difficult.

Re: bible app from life church latest update.

2014-07-20 Thread Kliphton Senior
The app from bible gateway doesn't have these issues, and is 98 percent
accessible. The only flaw I see is sometimes the audio is not always
available. But this is the case with the life church app also.

Re: BARD app

2014-07-20 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi Nicki,

Go into your timer app under clock and flick all the way to the bottom to
where it says when timer ends, stop playing. Once you are set there, you
just have to say, "set timer for 1 hour," and the book will stop playing
when time is up. Someone here has mentioned to turn off VO, but it does not
announce when the timer is stopping or anything like that on mine. I
thought that was something that only happens on the BARD players. I do have
"do not disturb on at night though." That could be the difference.

I would be interested to know if others have to turn VO off in order to not
here when the phone timer is stopping.

Thanks,
Lois

RE: problem changing speed in blindfold racer

2014-07-20 Thread Thom Spittle
Hi Ioana,
Unless the commands for speeding up and slowing down have changed recently,
the command was tapping with your right thumb to speed up, and tapping with
your left thumb or finger to slow down.
So speeding up was on the right, nearer to the home button in landscape
mode, and left side, nearer the earpiece to slow down.
1 tap is all that is needed to move up or down through the 3 speed levels.

Did anyone else have problems changing speed in Blindfold racer? I swipe up
and hear a honking sound and no speed change. At some point it chaned and
remained at higher rate without being able to change it.

Thanks for helping out.
Best,

Ioana

RE: BARD app

2014-07-20 Thread SSEric
Remember, first you want to go into the clock app and timers and under alarm
sounds scan to the bottom for shut down or whatever the verbiage is.

To set the timer, just tell Seri "Set timer for minutes" As I mentioned,
when I am hoping to fall asleep, I then tap play and then 3-finger double
tap to turn off speech. This way when the timer ends and the device shuts
down you don't get VoiceOver announcing that and waking you.
