Re: Accessible couponing apps

2014-08-19 Thread Michael Malver
Target has an app called cart wheel, which seems to be accessible. It allows
you to get coupons added to a shopping cart, and once you scan that cart, you
tend to get about 5% off the items.

Help with Aria Scale.

2014-08-19 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Good Morning everyone.

I have just got my Aria Scale and have a question. Ifi were to take the tab
off, the Scale would work. However, when the batteries run out, how would you
put new ones in? Is there also a switch on the Scale to turn it off? I couldn't
feel one. I am now reading the manual before I set it up.

I'd appreciate a little guidance. I live alone and have no sighted eyes today
as I'm not at work today.
Thank you very much.

Re: Help with Aria Scale.

2014-08-19 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi Kawal,

The batteries are replaceable. It will take at least a year for them to
die. There is no on off switch. When you step on, it turns, and off when
you step off. There is no need for a switch.

You will need to have the Fitbit app on your phone in order to set it up.
After you have the information in the app, just follow the very good
instructions under set up a new device.

Good luck.

Re: How accurate is the fit bit scale for weighing?

2014-08-19 Thread Lois Butterfield
In my opinion, it is better than any talking scale I have had. The talking
scales have felt cheap and have had one leg that seemed to indent when you
step on. I think that is how the weight was registered. The Aria is much
more heavy duty and has no loose legs at all. I find it to be very
accurate.

If you test any scale by standing on it several times over the course of 5
minutes, it would be rare to find one that didn't vary at all. It is
important to stand in the exact same place on the scale every time you step
on.

Take care,

Hi all, thank you for the help. I have been thinking about possibly getting
fit bit. What I would like to know is are the scales accurate when you
weigh. I have had several types of talking skills but none of them seem to
be accurate. God bless, Wren Langley

you will find the tab that you can move with your finger to lift the cover.

RE: Help with Aria Scale.

2014-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kawal,

I don't own an Aria scale, but I do own a very nice talking bathroom scale
and typically such scales do not have on/off switches as they are activated
when you step on the scale. This would be further supported by the fact that
instructions say to take out a battery if the scale won't connect to your
WiFi and you have to start over.

Here is a link to an online web version of the manual which has links for
various topics and is probably easier to use than a PDF version:fairly

Good luck.

Good Morning everyone.

I have just got my Aria Scale and have a question. Ifi were to take the tab
off, the Scale would work. However, when the batteries run out, how would
you put new ones in? Is there also a switch on the Scale to turn it off? I
couldn't feel one. I am now reading the manual before I set it up.

I'd appreciate a little guidance. I live alone and have no sighted eyes

Thank you very much.

RE: Help with Aria Scale.

2014-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andrew,

All iOS apps have to be always purchased from the app store, it's the only
game in town unless you jailbreak your device.

Most apps are relatively small and even the KNFB Reader app will not be
large enough where you would have to delete stuff off your phone if you
still have 4 Gb free or, for that matter, even if you had only 1 Gb free.

The Fitbit app is only 14.2 Mb, you could fit 281 apps of that size into
your 4 Gb of free space. My guess is KNFB Reader will be well below 100 Mb.
Just as a comparison, the Prizmo scanning/OCR app is 30.1 Mb and Text
Grabber+Translator is 39.5 Mb.

Sieghard

Good luck.

Good Morning everyone.

I have just got my Aria Scale and have a question. Ifi were to take the tab

you put new ones in? Is there also a switch on the Scale to turn it off? I
couldn't feel one. I am now reading the manual before I set it up.

I'd appreciate a little guidance. I live alone and have no sighted eyes

Thank you very much.

2014-08-19 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe

Hi
Sieghard, thank you for pointing that out. I downloaded the fitbit this
morning to take a look. I think that I would like some of the features. I
would like to use the Treadmill and to have some sort of feedback on how far
I walked and to keep track of it. Also with fitbit, I think both my wife
and I would enjoy the benefit of the scale.
While you’re here, I constantly use Blind Square and would not know what to
do without it. Do you think that it is wise to delete the Guide Dog gps,
prismo and Text Detected. Unless there is a benefit of keeping them, I
don't know why to have them on the phone.
The KNFB Reader is suppose to be out soon and the only thing I am worried
about getting it is that I have the 4s and I heard that it is better for the
5s. It must be better than the others that give me lots of trouble and not
accurate.
p.s. I salute you for the excellent work with Blind Square. I say this for
all that use the App. It save me each day last winter where I need to spend
much time walking in the Streets due to unshoveled walkways. Andy

Various help needed please.

2014-08-19 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Again.

I got the tab off the scale and know how to put in the batteries.

But now I have other problems which I'd like help with please.

i've forgotten how to switch networks on my 5S so that I can connect the Aria
Scale. If some one could tell me please.

The second this is, I have no clue what my weight is although I know what my
height is in feet but no nothing about pounds or Kilograms. So if I were to
get beyond the set up and to the personal information it wants you to give all
this information. If some one could tell me how to get around it then I could
set up the Scale as well as the Tracker.

If some one could write to me off list please by sending e-mail to
kawa...@me.com rather than my list address so as not to clutter the list I'd
appreciate it. I have read the starting manual well the first bit any way.

I'd appreciate this help and sorry for all the a questions today.

Thank you.

Kawal.

Giraffe Reader

2014-08-19 Thread Richard Turner
OK, Sam Jewel has now created a Giraffe Reader stand that will fit the
iPhone with the Otterbox Defender case.

I'm impressed with the ease of assembly, once someone with more sense than I
(my wife in this case) figured out how to unfold it and put it in position
to hold the phone I was able to get a couple very good scans.

I received the Giraffe Reader on August 11. I've been rather busy at work
and not had much time to do comparisons.

Yesterday, I scanned a 4 page document with Openbook and the Pearl camera.

I then scanned the same four page document with prizmo and the Giraffe
Reader.

I made sure the document was lined up at the base of the Pearl camera so it
was centered. I made sure the document was lined up with the edge of the
platform on the Giraffe Reader.

This was in my office with the overhead lights on. The Giraffe Reader was
about 3 feet away from where the Pearl is set up on my desk.

When I finished the scans, I exported the prizmo document as a text file.

I saved the Openbook copy as a word document.

When I opened them in Word 2013, the Prizmo/Giraffe Reader copy had a grand
total of one error.

The Openbook and Pearl copy had at least 20.

I hope to have time to do more comparisons with the same document and the
StandScan and other documents, but my first impression s are very positive
for the Giraffe Reader and Prizmo.

For those who do not know what the Giraffe Reader is, it is a portable stand
for the iPhone that folds up quite nicely. It is made out of a plastic
material that feels like corrugated cardboard, but is far more durable than
that. It folds up smaller than the StandScan and is many times easier to
fold and unfold. There are no lights, so it will depend on room light or
the flash on the iPhone.

You can read more about it and watch a video about it with Sam Jewel
explaining how to unfold it at:

http://www.giraffe-reader.com/

The web site shows an Introductory price of $54.50 US, or £32

Free shipping to blind users.

HTH,

Richard

If you get a gruop message, then the contact button will allow you to
see the people and a more info button for each person to view their
contact information. I don't know if the button appears if you get a
message from a single person but probably so. I find this helpful when
I get group messages from work, where there can be up to 10 or more
people in my department. This way, I can view each eprson that got the
message.

Many of the apps I have purchased with my iPhone do not appear in the purchased

RE: Help with Aria Scale.

2014-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andy,

I suggest you find the Fitbit on Amazon and read a bunch of the reviews or just
Google "Fitbit Reviews" or "Using a Fitbit on a treadmill". I am not saying
that it doesn't work and people do use it on a treadmill clipped to their foot
or hip, but it is not made for that and a lot of people also report that it is
not very accurate for use on a treadmill or stair master. You have to remember
that it records steps by registering your arm movement and people even say it
basically does not work if your arms are on a shopping cart or baby stroller
where they remain mostly still and don't swing back and forth. Lois I believe
says she clips it to her shoe, in some of the reviews I read the consensus
seems to be it works better on a treadmill if it's clipped to your hip and in
my opinion it's a $100 gadget I don't need in order to know that I have to
excersize. I walk outside every day and especially in the winter I go to our
pool at least 2 to 3 times a week where I first use their excersize room for an
hour or so running on a treadmill and climbing the stairmaster, then I swim for
30 to 45 minutes and if I walk there both ways from my house that is a 5 Km
walk and a total work-out of about 3 hours. I like gadgets as well, but I have
been fairly successful lately in not buying any which aren't all that useful or
those which I use for a while and then lose interest.

As for Prizmo and Text Detective, I guess we find out once KNFB Reader is
released as to whether it can totally take their place. It would be my guess
that it can absolutely take their place with respect to doing OCR which is what
us blind folks typically use these apps for. Therefore I expect I can delete
both of these apps once I have KNFB Reader, but in the end it's for you to
decide.

I assume by guide dog GPS you mean the Seeing Eye GPS app and once again, you
are the one who knows if it's useful for you. I guess it also depends if you
have an active subscription or not, if I had an active subscription I'd also
use it. Once they offered the monthly subscriptions I tried it out and I do
like it quite a lot. But I live in a small town and I've been here for almost
20 years so I do know my way around quite well and find that I rarely need any
sort of GPS app. As you said, they sometimes come in handy in the winter when
curbs and other things disappear under a few feet of snow which also can happen
where I live and where it can be very useful to whip up an app to check where I
am. But as you said, Blindsquare does that nicely and I just wish they could
add the sort of intersection detail to Blindsquare that the Seeing Eye GPS has
in some future release.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi
Sieghard, thank you for pointing that out. I downloaded the fitbit this
morning to take a look. I think that I would like some of the features. I
would like to use the Treadmill and to have some sort of feedback on how far I
walked and to keep track of it. Also with fitbit, I think both my wife and I
would enjoy the benefit of the scale.
While you’re here, I constantly use Blind Square and would not know what to do
without it. Do you think that it is wise to delete the Guide Dog gps, prismo
and Text Detected. Unless there is a benefit of keeping them, I don't know why
to have them on the phone.
The KNFB Reader is suppose to be out soon and the only thing I am worried about
getting it is that I have the 4s and I heard that it is better for the 5s. It
must be better than the others that give me lots of trouble and not accurate.
p.s. I salute you for the excellent work with Blind Square. I say this for all
that use the App. It save me each day last winter where I need to spend much
time walking in the Streets due to unshoveled walkways. Andy

Hi Andrew,

All iOS apps have to be always purchased from the app store, it's the only game
in town unless you jailbreak your device.

Most apps are relatively small and even the KNFB Reader app will not be large
enough where you would have to delete stuff off your phone if you still have 4
Gb free or, for that matter, even if you had only 1 Gb free.

The Fitbit app is only 14.2 Mb, you could fit 281 apps of that size into your 4
Gb of free space. My guess is KNFB Reader will be well below 100 Mb.
Just as a comparison, the Prizmo scanning/OCR app is 30.1 Mb and Text
Grabber+Translator is 39.5 Mb.

Sieghard

Re: Question concerning NFL Audio Pass

2014-08-19 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys,

Curious if anyone knows? I have an app I bought years ago that I am not sure if
it is available in the app store anymore, but it still seems to get all the
games. The only thing really annoying about the app is the delay between the
feed and real time as it seems like it is a few minutes, and since I receive
several push notifications I have to turn off VO when listening to a game or I
get the push notification about a scoring play before it happens to the audio
feed I am listening to. Has anyone compared the NFL audio pass feeds to the
T.V. and is there a delay? I assume there is as MLB At Bat which I subscribe to
also has a significant delay, it must just be streaming audio has a delay. Was
curious about this? Thanks,

RE: About the Contact button?

2014-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marie,

Fred is referring to the Contact button at the top right of the screen when
you are in a received text message. You are talking about a button called
"Addressbook" in the first screen when you tap on Compose.

If you double tap on that contact button inside a received message, 2 or 3
buttons appear below i. I think on the very right of the screen is "More"
which opens up the contact just as you would see it in the Contacts app,
then there is also a "Call" button which allows you to call that person from
right inside your messages app and I can't remember what the third button
is.

They are a bit hard to find, but not bad if you double tap Contact, then
drag your finger down the screen just a little bit below the Contact button.
Once you are on one of these buttons you can swipe left or right for the
others.

Groupon could use some work for a smoother experience with Voiceover, but its
for the most part accessible. You can read all elements of the app, but VO for
whatever reason is sluggish with it.

If you’re looking for general deal apps, DealNews and BradsDeals are pretty

Re: Question concerning NFL Audio Pass

2014-08-19 Thread Cheryl Homiak
You don't mention the name of the app you are using.

There is a delay but there shouldn't be that much of a delay unless something
is slow in your area or with your network. Usually with MLB I get the
notification of the play at the same time it happens or not more than 30
seconds before. But maybe there are a lot of variables that determine this.

I don't have a straightforward way to get there. I have the same

However, once you are playing the broadcast, if you move around the

A friend is traveling to Paris and Rome next month.

She is wondering about WiFi access in both places.

Apps for points of interest that would work for both areas.

Any tips folks might know that would be helpful to a first time traveler to
Paris and Rome.

She is not on the list so I told her I'd see what I could find out since I know
there are folks from both countries on this list.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Richard,

The Metro app is invaluable for getting around using the public transport
system in Paris. It also offers the same facility for many other cities
throughout the world and it doesn't require an internet connection once it's
installed. Here's the link:

Replace the "fr" with the code for your country.

Rhapsody Or Spotify, Opinions?

2014-08-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I am considering adding one of these services to my iPhone 5. I already have
Pandora, and iTunes radio, but I understand Rhapsody and Spotify will let me
listen to whole albums, or a given artist for more than two songs. How do they
compare, both in ease of use, and in their content? I think they both have
free and paid versions, so what additional features would I get in the paid
versions? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

problem in accessing netfliks

2014-08-19 Thread martin nelson
Hello: this may have been discussed before on the list. I am finding the app
for Netfliks a little difficult to use. When swiping to a program, when I tap
on it it doesn't open. Also, when resuming a program the place where I left off
is lost. On the computer using Jaws accessibility isn't much better. Has anyone
else using Netfliks had these problems?
Thank you for any help.

Re: problem in accessing netfliks

2014-08-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The trick is that the program needs to be visible on the screen before
the double tap will work. I explore by touch to see if what I'm looking
for is on the screen or not, and if not, I use a double tap and hold
followed by sliding my finger up or down the screen to move the content
I'm looking for onto the visible screen. There are podcasts, I think
there's one on AppleVis.com, that does a better job of describing this
than I can do.

I don't have the problem you're seeing with the resume not picking up
where I left off.

Hi,

On the app which you can get to with dot4-chord, press dot6-chord (or
dot3-chord depending on what setting the action rotor is on), and then
dot36-chord to double-tap to close. Dots56-chord selects next rotor
setting; dots23-chord selects previous rotor setting.

RE: Paris and Rome

2014-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Richard,

Trip Advisor is definitely a must-have app and for cities like Paris and Rome
there should be a multitude of apps both with general information as well as
probably some specific apps like maybe for museums and so on. She could just
search in the app store for “Paris” and “Rome” and sift through most likely a
fairly large number of apps, but anything in the “Travel” category is probably
worth checking further.

She should find plenty of free WiFi spots in France and Italy, once again there
are apps out there for that.

Any tips folks might know that would be helpful to a first time traveler to
Paris and Rome.

She is not on the list so I told her I'd see what I could find out since I know
there are folks from both countries on this list.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Friend has problem with home button

2014-08-19 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have a friend who is blind and has a new 5C. At first siri worked when she
held down the phone button but now when she holds down the home button the
phone locks. I can’t find any setting that should make the phone lock by the
home button: unlock or at least the first step in unlocking, yes, but lock via
the home button? Not that I can find. I’m wondering if the home button is
broken or if there is a setting I don’t know about. I haven’t had her go as far
as holding down the home button and power button to reset yet. The home button
works normally when pressed; this abnormal behavior only occurs when she holds
it in to try to get siri.

bit less decisive, in case you forget and leave your rotor setting on "close".

Re: Is there a way to set voice dream reader so that it will not go to the next item when it finishes playing the item currently being listen to? Also is there a way to make it repeat the current item

2014-08-19 Thread Richard Turner
Is there a way to set voice dream reader so that it will not go to the next
item when it finishes playing the item currently being listened to?

Yes, it is in settings, under advanced, where it says: Auto-Advance to Next
Article When Finished.

Also is there a way to make it repeat the current item from the beginning?
Yes, just double tap on the percentage and enter a 0, or double on page and
enter 1.
Can it be set to read only certain sections of an item over and over?
Not really. You could enter a bookmark, and then go to that bookmark.

Re: Rhapsody Or Spotify, Opinions?

2014-08-19 Thread Teresa Cochran
I've used both. I think Spotify wins, hands down. It's easier to use and in my
opinion, has a much bigger selection of tracks. Unfortunately, Rhapsody hasn't
recovered entirely from the fire they had, which destroyed some computer
equipment. One neat thing you can do with Spotify is make playlists accept
collaboration. I haven't tried this yet, but I imagine it would be a lot of fun.

Since then, Fleksy has become accessible again. I suspect that this is why
the other version may have been pulled.

Hi Donald,

Do you tap on "search" in the bottom right corner of the keyboard after you
enter your search term? Often an app won't show up in the search suggestions
unless you do this. If I just type "Fleksy" into the search field of the app
store on my iPhone and tap on the search button the first result is "Fleksy"
and the second is "Fleksy VO".

If your friend reboots the phone by turning completely off and on again and
this behavior continues she probably has to take it to an Apple Store since the
home button definitely does not act this way. If it is a 5C she still has
warranty so they will either repair the problem or replace the phone.
