Re: what's the current state of sonos accessability???? kind regards trey.

2014-09-05 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi,

I was one of the people who wrote a review a while ago now about Sonos
accessibility, * note to self, update post * From early 2014 the Sonos iOS app
became fully accessible, and, from my perspective is an excellent
implementation of accessible and usable interface planning and construction...
The solution on OSx needs still work, however, I am aware that it will get a
make over in time.

Until which though, the iOS iPhone and iPad versions are great.

Re: what's the current state of sonos accessibility???? kind regards trey.

2014-09-05 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Previously at least one Sonos unit within your Sonos setup had to be connected
by physical wired connection to your network, this unit, and / or other wired
units, would then create a dedicated Sonos WiFi network that was solely for the
Sonos system to use.

Sonos changed there system publicly about a month ago now, although some of us
were using it for longer previously, to allow all of your Sonos units to use
your existing WiFi network without the need for any one unit to have a physical
connection.

For me, I've tried it both ways and cannot find nor determine a difference, the
reason that they did it I believe is to try and help people out who live in
crowded WiFi congestion areas.

Sonos are also bringing out a Sonos Boost, which is like a Bridge but has
double the WiFi range to try and help people who have distance issues in their
Sonos networks.

I've played with this unit, but, since I do not have distance constraints its
not something I need. In my home I put a boost at one end of the property, a
Play 5 at the far end, a rough distance of 400 feet and 4 double thick walls
and it worked perfectly. The same setup but with a Bridge rather than Boost
would not work.

I don't have this issue myself as I have physical wiring throughout my home,
and, enough Sonos units so that they form a mesh network in any event.

Happy also to talk with anyone off list about requirements... My current Sonos
network consist of:

5 x Connects,
1 x Sub connected to a Play 5
2 x Play5's in stereo pair mode,
1 x Play1,
2 x Play 3 in stereo pair,
1 x Play 3
1 x Sound Bar, 2 x Play5 and 2 x Play3 in surround mode.
1 x Bridge

All in all, its a cracking setup.

 Hi Alan and Robin,

Thanks for the kind words, but Neil Barnfather also should be mentioned
here, probably more so than me when it comes to implementing accessibility.
Yes, in some way I hope my persistent correspondence with Sonos had a bit of
influence in getting them to make a commitment towards accessibility, but
Neil I think had dealings with people that were higher up on the corporate
ladder. I have been a Sonos user for 5 years and I definitely have been a
pain in the somewhere at times and I also did Beta test for them, but it's
also because of all the other blind users and I think by now there are many
that they realised they really had to support accessibility.

I think Sonos is far from done innovating and I look forward to what they
come up with next. I have a rather high-end Sony receiver which sounds
awesome when it's hooked up to a good set of speakers, but I'm almost at a
point where I might end up selling it so I can get a Playbar along with a
Sonos Sub and a few Play 3 or Play 5 players for rear speakers. My receiver
is not that old, but unfortunately I bought it a couple of years before many
receivers came out with network connectivity and apps to control them so
apart from turning it on, switching sources and turning the volume up and
down it's rather inaccessible and once you get used to products like Sonos
and the Apple TV you get spoiled in the accessibility department.

 Sieghard

Samsung galaxy

2014-09-05 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi my son has demod his samsung galaxy 4s and it seems to be able to handle
many of the blind’s needs. I know that there are so many iPhone users here so I
need to know why would I want to switch to a galaxy? Many years ago, a friend
of mine told me to stay with what the majority is using so you have support and
what is known with the product. How do I research the benefits of the Samsung
Galaxy verses the IPhones? I need your opinions to make a good decision.
How this started is that I want more memory for books and videos to place on my
phone. I can’t upgrade for another year from 16 gig to something higher.

Data man, is it no longer available?

2014-09-05 Thread Donald L. Roberts
The subject pretty much says it. The program called Data Man is
wonderfully accessible and provides aggregate info on data usage for the
current billing cycle as well as for the previous billing cycles. I
must have somehow deleted it from an old 4 but cannot find it in the app
store. I see a program for $1.99 called Data Man next but doubt this is
the same program.

In lieu of finding the correct program, what must I do to restore from a
previous iCloud backup? Also, is there a program comparable to Data Man
which is equally accessible?

Thanks.

I believe with the sighted folks to answer an incoming call, it's a single

One thing to remember is that gestures are different with voiceover on than
with it off; I don't know if this applies to answering the phone or not but
i have to turn voiceover off to let anybody sighted do anything with it and,
yes, the screen curtain has to be off too! Unless you use earphones that
have a built-in control or allow you to answer by voice, I don't know of an
alternative, and of course if somebody is just picking up your phone and
answering it for you, the other person isn't going to be using headphones.
Even though I am a long-time iPhone user, I find that I tend to forget and
double tap with only one finger, and then I yell at my phone because it
activated something else. A two-finger double tap anywhere should answer the
call but if it isn't a two-finger double tap, unless you are on the answer
button, your results won't be what you wanted.

Re: College Football

2014-09-05 Thread Brian Fischler
No it has something to do with streaming as if you were listening on a regular
radio it would not be delayed but for some reason all streaming audio has a
delay. Thanks Andy. I actually think this All football Radio might just be a
newer version of the apps that I already have as they look very similar as my
strictly college football radio also has schedules and scores so it looks like
the developer might have just finally combined both apps in to one and instead
of being 99 cents it's now 1.99 for both. Glad to see the app is still around
as besides the delay it is fantastic. The only other drawback and I haven't
checked if it is still the same this year is I do not think you can listen to a
game on 4G as at least last season you needed to be on Wifi for the game
streams to work.

RE: Samsung galaxy

2014-09-05 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Andrew,

I can only speak for myself, of course, but my answer to your question is that
you don't have to decide. That is to say, use them both.

In addition to my iPhone 5 S, I also use a Galaxy Note 2, and a Galaxy S4.

The truth is that Android has some delightful features that some may prefer
over iPhone.

Even with much study, the only real way to understand an OS including its
accessibility features is to experience it, first hand.

So, if you can, find yourself a Galaxy device and, purchase a pay-as-you-go SIM
card and take it for a test drive.

While I certainly prefer my iPhone over the Galaxy devices, at present, in no
way would I consider abandoning the Android platform.

Subject: Samsung galaxy

Hi my son has demod his samsung galaxy 4s and it seems to be able to handle
many of the blind’s needs. I know that there are so many iPhone users here so I
need to know why would I want to switch to a galaxy? Many years ago, a friend
of mine told me to stay with what the majority is using so you have support and
what is known with the product. How do I research the benefits of the Samsung
Galaxy verses the IPhones? I need your opinions to make a good decision.
How this started is that I want more memory for books and videos to place on my
phone. I can’t upgrade for another year from 16 gig to something higher.

Hi Jed,

All of the OCR apps use the backfacing camera. If you point the back of the
phone towards whatever it is you want to scan, the camera from your
perspective will be at the top right corner of the phone, just below the
power button. You will have to have a reasonably good sense of orientation
to make sure the camera points roughly to he middle of whatever it is you
are scanning. I find a good way for me is to lay the phone flat on top of
the page or the envelope I am scanning. I estimate where the middle is and
put the top right corner of the phone there. Then I lift the phone straight
up and away from the page about 8 or 10 inches. If it's a smaller piece of
paper 4 or 6 inches might be enough. It's important to make sure you don't
tilt the phone too much and also that the edge of your document is
relatively straight in relationship to the edges of the phone. Then go ahead
and take the picture and hope for the best. As others pointed out, lighting
is also important. I think most would agree at this point that Prizmo and
Text Grabber work best.

Keep in mind that we are within a week or so (according to KNFB) of the
release of the KNFB Reader for the iPhone. This has been discussed
extensively on the list and there are some Podcasts available. KNFB Reader
is relatively expensive at $99, but it is made for the blind and has
specific features which should allow you to take the best picture possible.
In the end the picture quality is the most important variable, if Prizmo or
Text Grabber get a perfect image they do a great job with the OCR.

Sieghard

The subject pretty much says it. The program called Data Man is wonderfully
accessible and provides aggregate info on data usage for the current billing
cycle as well as for the previous billing cycles. I must have somehow
deleted it from an old 4 but cannot find it in the app store. I see a
program for $1.99 called Data Man next but doubt this is the same program.

In lieu of finding the correct program, what must I do to restore from a
previous iCloud backup? Also, is there a program comparable to Data Man
which is equally accessible?

Thanks.

Re: [IDevices] new iPhone

2014-09-05 Thread David Chittenden
Contrary to popular opinion amongst the blind, opinion which is actually
extremely limiting amongst blind people, a larger screen is actually better for
us blind people. I have been working with an itinerant teacher of low vision
and blind children testing this. When the blind children use the touch-screen
directly through dragging the finger around the screen on the iPad to explore,
rather than merely using the serial interface of keyboard commands or finger
flicking commands, once they adapt to said interface, their productivity and
speed becomes significantly quicker with improved understanding of visual
layouts and where to locate desired information. Note: all testing and training
is being performed with full-sized iPads. Perhaps, mainly blind children have
the mental flexibility and intelligence to effectively adapt to a more useful
and efficient interface.

Re: [IDevices] new iPhone

2014-09-05 Thread Alex Hall
Two years ago I would have said I like the small screen. However, after going
from the 3.5-inch screen of an iPod Touch 4 to the 4-inch screen of an iPhone5,
I find I prefer the iPhone's larger display now that I'm used to it and can
compare the two. If I were to go to an iPad tomorrow, I'd hate it, and I've
tried them before so I have some experience. However, the incremental increases
in screen size seem to be a way of easing into the new screen sizes; maybe I'll
love the 4.7-inch over the 4-inch in another year or so, then an iPad Mini
won't seem bad at all. Of course, all this is as subjective as which speech
synthesizer is best, and we all have to use what we like most. I guess I'm
mostly saying this: don't dismiss the larger screen outright; give it a chance
and see if you don't wind up liking it after all. Plus, a larger screen means a
larger battery and more icons on the home screen (probably), so that's a plus
no matter what your visual situation is.

May I ask why you did not like the larger screen? Again, How did you interact
with the larger screen? In what way do you interact with the smaller screen.

What I am reporting is researched evidence, not my opinion. My final sentence

wonder about the quality of the built-in speaker.

Before I decide to jump into an iPhone 6, I will want to examine it

good alternative since I personally don't need enhanced power from my

On the other side of the argument is the high probability that the

Dear all. On my iphone 5C I recently updated the facebook messenger app.
When I launch the app, dictate button works for me. But after certain amount
of inactivity, I lose that button. The button is there but I can't dictate
anything as the button is shown as dimmed. Is anyone else having the same
issue? In solution for this behaviour of the messenger app?

Re: [IDevices] new iPhone

2014-09-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
We don't have any details on the study David is referring to, so it
isn't clear to me how relevant it is to the discussion. For example, he
refers to exploring the screen and doesn't reference typing speed. He
also says the iPad was used but not a phablet or something akin to the
size of the iPhone 6, whatever that will be. It also seems like he's
talking about children new to a touch screen, which isn't the same thing
as an adult who's already an experienced touch screen user.

I have a Nexis 7, and I do find it easier learning new apps where I'm
exploring the screen and learning it's layout. I can also see where I'd
continue to be more proficient using an app where your interaction with
it is to access different areas of the screen. For example, I prefer
using my Nexis 7 for things like NFL Mobile, Netflix, Pandora and
similar apps.

I find typing to be a different story. Instead of working with a few
icons placed around the screen, I'm heavily interacting with many more
objects on the screen. I appreciate their closer proximity and the fact
that I have more relevant physical reference points, like the sides and
corners of my iPhone. I am definitely a much faster typer on my iPhone
than I am on my Nexis 7.

It also makes sense to me that when learning a new app and exploring
it's interface, you would pick up things more quickly on a larger
display, but once you know the interface, would you be more proficient
on the larger device or would the size of the screen stop being relevant
after a certain point?

I also wonder how much our interaction with technology to this point,
and I'm thinking about PC's and JAWS in particular, where we're
presented with a linear view of our technology effects our use and
adaption of the touch screen. The iPhone plays into this by emulating
that linear view of the interface with the swipe gesture. Maybe the
results of this study have more to do with having people new to the
touch screen learn to use the interface as it's actually laid out in two
dimensions than the size of the screen being used.

Finally, even if this study clearly states that blind people do better
with a larger screen that has nothing to do with an individuals
preference. I wouldn't change my preference for a screen size just
because someone refers to a study or questions my intelligence or mental
flexibility. I have no idea if these children are using their iPads the
same way I use my iPhone or not, and frankly, I don't really care.

  Hi David,
While I respect your opinion about the larger screens, personally I like
the smaller screen no matter what anybody says.
I have used larger screens such as the iPad, and hated it. But again, I
respect your opinion, but please don't put the rest of us down.

Contrary to popular opinion amongst the blind, opinion which is
actually extremely limiting amongst blind people, a larger screen is
actually better for us blind people. I have been working with an
itinerant teacher of low vision and blind children testing this. When
the blind children use the touch-screen directly through dragging the
finger around the screen on the iPad to explore, rather than merely
using the serial interface of keyboard commands or finger flicking
commands, once they adapt to said interface, their productivity and
speed becomes significantly quicker with improved understanding of
visual layouts and where to locate desired information. Note: all
testing and training is being performed with full-sized
iPads. Perhaps, mainly blind children have the mental flexibility and
intelligence to effectively adapt to a more useful and efficient
interface.

Greetings:

I am not confident that the iPhone 6 will represent a total positive
for the blind. For one thing, rumor has it that the iPhone 6 will be
larger than the five series, which is a negative from my point of
view despite its allegedly faster processor and more sophisticated
internal technology. Also, the iPhone 6 will be a bit thinner, which
causes me to wonder about the quality of the built-in speaker.

Before I decide to jump into an iPhone 6, I will want to examine it
thoroughly at the Apple Store. Otherwise, the iPhone 5S seems a very
good alternative since I personally don't need enhanced power from my
iPhone in any case.

On the other side of the argument is the high probability that the
iPhone 66 is going to have a camera with more megapixels than the
iPhone 5 series.
