This sounds like a limitation of your email provider. When I had a local
provider, we had the same problem for some years, until they eventually enabled
the feature. The first step would be to go to your provider's website, or call
their support number, and double check that all your SMTP settings are correct.
If they are, ask if the provider allows for sending email away from your home
network. If they don't, consider switching to a more modern, widely supported
service such as gmail.com, outlook.com, or, my personal favorite, iCloud.com.

iOS 8 and later comes with the Podcasts and iBooks apps. Since this is the
case, they will not show up in Manage Storage and so cannot be deleted even

Subject: Recommendations for a New Bank?

  Hi all,
Sorry if you're getting this multiple times, I'm sending it to the three
lists I'm on.

I need a new bank. I currently use TD Bank, and their site and app are
accessible enough. The problems are:

  1. I can only view six months of account history, and the PDF statements they
provide for longer history appear to be inaccessible.
  2. Their app logs you out after you close it, even if you only leave it for a
minute. The app also fails to work with braille screen input, so you can't use
that to type your password, and does not support Touch ID.
  3. When I try to use the TD Bank website on the Mac, Safari crashes. It has
done this for years, and every time I ask TD Bank support about it, I get a
different answer. No one can offer a fix, though.

What I'm looking for is something better. Fully accessible, obviously, but
also offering accessible statements, a more modern and robust iOS app, etc.
Having a bank card with raised letters on one side wouldn't hurt either. :) I'd
love to switch to Simple, but they still haven't opened new account creation
yet, plus they don't support any sort of business account, which I'd need. I'm
in the United States, by the way. Thanks in advance for any ideas anyone might
have.

Re: Problems Selecting Text In E-mail

2015-02-13 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
Excellent idea. On my various iPhones, I've tried that stupid pinch gesture
more times than I care to count and I've rarely gotten it to work. The
two-finger swipe right could work satisfactorily. Alternatively, perhaps a
double-tap-and-hold at the beginning and another double-tap-and hold at the end
of the text, sort of like setting block markers, could work, too. Just a
thought.

I believe there's an update for iOS after 8.1.1 (8.1.3 is coming to mind, but
maybe I'm wrong). I'd install that first, just in case.

I'd also suggest that it might be the way you're doing the gesture. I'm not
slamming you in any way - I've used iOS for over four years, and I *still*
can't reliably select or un-select. Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it
works perfectly, sometimes it selects way more than I wanted. I've emailed
Apple Accessibility to ask if they would consider changing from a pinch gesture
to a two-finger swipe left/right, as that would be much more reliable and easy
to perform.

Anyway, keep at it, and install that update. Sorry I can't offer anything
more helpful.

Re: playing WMA audio book files from Overdrive on Iphones

2015-02-13 Thread Teresa Cochran
I'm fairly certain you can only play Overdrive MP3 books on the iDevice. WMA is
a Windows format, and also, the files have a lot of protected content, so may
not play in anything other than Overdrive without self-destructing. I hope I'm
wrong, though. I can't test it, since you can only use Windows to transfer the
files, and I don't have access to that application.

iPhone, iPod and iPad don't support WMA files.

I know an article which introduces two methods on how to import WMA to iTunes
and then transfer WMA to iPhone/iPod/iPad via iTunes at:
 http://www.faasoft.com/articles/wma-to-itunes-to-play-wma-on-iphone-ipad-ipod.html

Method One: Import WMA to iTunes for Windows

Launch iTunes, and then click File Add File to Library to open WMA
files that you want to import. Then a window will pop up as clearly. Just
click Convert to convert WMA to iTunes M4A format. Once the conversion is
done, you can play WMA files in iTunes or import WMA to iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Method Two: Add WMA to iTunes for Mac

For Mac users, the widely used solution is to convert WMA to iTunes more
compatible formats like MP3, M4A, AAC, etc with special WMA to iTunes
Converter. Faasoft's great WMA to iTunes Converter is the best one of them,
which enables to convert WMA to iTunes with fast speed and high quality.

Re: U.S. Carriers, You'll Have to Unlock Those Phones

2015-02-13 Thread Mike Arrigo
This was definitely a long time coming, and I'm glad it's happened. For
me at least, I think I still will continue to purchase unlocked devices
out of the box, they cost a bit more but well worth it.

Original message:

Hello All,

I am delighted to post the following cNet News article for your
consideration.

The URL to the original article is at the bottom of the text.

Mark

U.S. carriers, you'll have to unlock those phones

Starting now, it will be much easier for people to jump from one carrier to
another and take their smartphone with them.

by Don Reisinger

The days of carriers locking down devices to keep customers in place are
officially dead.
Starting now, all US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid and
prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain parameters are
met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all wireless
carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015.

The move follows from President Obama last year signing into law the
Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which overruled a
controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress.

The debate over phone unlocking has come a long way in just a few short
years. Unlocking a phone allows owners to put the device on whatever carrier
network they choose. For years, carriers have locked down devices, allowing
them only to connect to their own networks. The move was designed to keep
customers close and not see them stray to other carriers.

We are pleased the FCC acknowledged the participating wireless carriers met
the deadlines to unlock their customers' devices per the Consumer Code for
Wireless Service, said Scott Bergmann, the CTIA's vice president for
regulatory affairs, in a statement. We also remind consumers that an
unlocked device does not necessarily mean an interoperable one since
different carriers use different technologies and spectrum bands.

For customers, the inability to unlock handsets had been a nuisance. Many
consumers, seeking better network coverage or data plan pricing, have wanted
to be able to move to a different network without having to buy a new
device. An unlocked handset would allow that interchange between, say, ATT
and T-Mobile networks. Locked devices force customers to stick with their
carrier networks and if they decide to switch, to buy a new device on the
other carrier.

In 2013, the issue of unlocking hitting a tipping point when the Libary of
Congress held that the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) banned
American consumers from unlocking their devices without the consent of their
carriers. Critics took issue with the ruling, which actually came down in
2012 but went into effect in 2013. Then in August 2014 came the Unlocking
Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which effectively made
unlocking legal again.

Under the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service that went into effect
Wednesday, carriers will have no choice but to remove locks on devices owned
by both postpaid and prepaid wireless users.

On the postpaid side, carriers must unlock devices after a customer in good
standing has fulfilled postpaid service contract, device financing plan, or
payment of applicable early termination fee. In other words, those
subscribers who get smartphones for less by paying a subsidy at the
beginning and paying in full over the life of a contract, must have
satisfied that payment covenant before they can be allowed to unlock their
device.

On the prepaid side, things are bit simpler: carriers must, upon request,
unlock a handset no later than one year after initial activation.

All unlocking, regardless of the type of customer, must be completed within
two days of a request, and carriers are now required to inform consumers of
their policies.

Carriers that lock devices will clearly notify customers that their devices
are eligible for unlocking at the time when their devices are eligible for
unlocking or automatically unlock devices remotely when devices are eligible
for unlocking, without additional fee, the code reads. Carriers reserve
the right to charge non-customers/non-former-customers with a reasonable fee
for unlocking requests. Notice to prepaid customers may occur at point of
sale, at the time of eligibility, or through a clear and concise statement
of policy on the carrier's website.

I'm sorry you're having such trouble with Deezer. I don't yet own

play it and one song may play OK, but then just about every other song plays
for a minute or so, then if I have the Sonos app open Voiceover says
something to the effect that the connection to Deezer was lost. The music
then continues to play for another 40 or 50 seconds (probably this is
buffered) and then the song stop and the next song starts playing. I have
spend a lot of time with Sonos level 2 support to try and figure out what
causes this with no success. If I use the Deezer app on my iPhone I can play
for hours without a single hiccup and it can't be a bandwidth issue since I
have a pretty fast connection and also because Tidal which is probably using
more bandwidth than Deezer plays just fine without any problems. Spotify
also had no such problems and I can play Tune In stations via Sonos just
fine, it's just Deezer that has this problem and that really is too bad
since otherwise it would be my service of choice.

Sieghard is right: unless you have high-end equipment, you may not
realize a great benefit if you subscribe to TIDAL. However, one point
to their advantage is that the TIDAL app is the only music service app
I know of that boasts VoiceOver support in its product description in

 Hello Sonos owners,

Just wanted to let you know that while Tidal is not officially supported
 by
Sonos, you can add the service to your Sonos system via the Beta/Sonos
 Labs
feature. Here is what you do:

 1. Go to www.TidalHiFi.com http://www.TidalHiFi.com and sign up
 for
an account if you don't already have one

 2. Open the Sonos app on your iphone and go to the music menu, then
 Settings, then My Services

 3. You will see a list of the services you have setup with the
title/heading of in Use. Double tap on In Use and then flick right to
 the beta option.

 4. Do a 3-finger swipe up until you get to the end of the listing
 of
services, it's in alphabetical order so Tidal is towards the end.

 5. Double tap on Tidal, then on Add Account, say you already have
 an
account and then enter your login email address and password.

I have just set it up and I'm about 5 songs into an album I added to the
 My
Music section, the Tidal implementation seems to be very nice on Sonos
 and
while the first song skipped to the next after a few seconds, it's been
playing solid and without skips and drop-outs ever since.

I just got off the phone with Sonos support to try and figure out why my
Deezer account/subscription constantly skips after playing half the song.
The tech support guy I talked to was as friendly and helpful as always
 with
Sonos support. I submitted a couple of diagnostics and he said he is
 going
to escalate this to the next level since he doesn't see much in the
diagnostic reports which would indicate why it's doing this. For now I'm
happy that Tidal seems to be working well and

Hi Craig,

I guess you'll just have to buy your first Sonos component then *smile*. Here
is information from the Deezer website:

How Do I Get Deezer Elite Within the US?

1. Install your Sonos App - Download and install the Sonos App:
• on Android
• on iOS

2. Access Deezer through your Sonos App. Only Deezer via the Sonos App gives
you access to Deezer Elite accounts.

3. Create your Deezer Account and Subscribe to Deezer Elite. Congratulations,
you are now a Deezer Elite customer!

Basically Deezer is currently limited to Sonos customers in the US. For a
change us Canadians get the advantage since I can also just download the Deezer
iOS app and use the service that way. I am actually going to upgrade my
currently free Deezer Premium Plus account which I got for free for 1 year with
the purchase of my Sonos Playbar and see if that fixes the problem I am having.
I believe as a Sonos user who got the service for free Deezer is offering the
upgrade to Deezer Elite for $50 for 1 year which is a bargain.

Re: U.S. Carriers, You'll Have to Unlock Those Phones

2015-02-13 Thread eden
i have a question. I have Verizon, but it's one that has a SIM card but
I thought all Verizon was TDMA. I am a little uncertain as to which
carriers might actually work. For instance, someone told me Straight
Talk offered more data thhan Verizon for the same price, but i wonder
would this work or TMobile or something. i very much like Verizon's
coverage, but the data is a bit expensive, and there is no unlimited for
prepaid. I did not buy this phone from Verizon but used, and it was
already out of contract or had been paid off. Can anoyone recommend a
data plan and carrier that might work with this phone. i called Verizon
about the unlocking a couple of weeks ago, but I did not realize it had
not yet gone into effect, and i was very rudely told never would my
phone be unlockable, it was Verizon, and that was that. I mentioned the
new unlocking phone law, and i was informed they did not have to abide
by it. i am glad to know that agent was obviously lying.

U.S. carriers, you'll have to unlock those phones

Starting now, it will be much easier for people to jump from one
carrier to

another and take their smartphone with them.

by Don Reisinger

The days of carriers locking down devices to keep customers in place are
officially dead.
Starting now, all US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid
and
prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain
parameters are
met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all
wireless

carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015.

The move follows from President Obama last year signing into law the
Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which
overruled a

controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress.

The debate over phone unlocking has come a long way in just a few short
years. Unlocking a phone allows owners to put the device on whatever
carrier
network they choose. For years, carriers have locked down devices,
allowing
them only to connect to their own networks. The move was designed to
keep

customers close and not see them stray to other carriers.

We are pleased the FCC acknowledged the participating wireless
carriers met
the deadlines to unlock their customers' devices per the Consumer
Code for

Wireless Service, said Scott Bergmann, the CTIA's vice president for
regulatory affairs, in a statement. We also remind consumers that an
unlocked device does not necessarily mean an interoperable one since
different carriers use different technologies and spectrum bands.

For customers, the inability to unlock handsets had been a nuisance.
Many
consumers, seeking better network coverage or data plan pricing, have
wanted

to be able to move to a different network without having to buy a new
device. An unlocked handset would allow that interchange between,
say, ATT
and T-Mobile networks. Locked devices force customers to stick with
their
carrier networks and if they decide to switch, to buy a new device on
the

other carrier.

In 2013, the issue of unlocking hitting a tipping point when the
Libary of

Congress held that the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) banned
American consumers from unlocking their devices without the consent
of their
carriers. Critics took issue with the ruling, which actually came
down in
2012 but went into effect in 2013. Then in August 2014 came the
Unlocking

Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which effectively made
unlocking legal again.

Under the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service that went into
effect
Wednesday, carriers will have no choice but to remove locks on
devices owned

by both postpaid and prepaid wireless users.

On the postpaid side, carriers must unlock devices after a customer
in good
standing has fulfilled postpaid service contract, device financing
plan, or

payment of applicable early termination fee. In other words, those
subscribers who get smartphones for less by paying a subsidy at the
beginning and paying in full over the life of a contract, must have
satisfied that payment covenant before they can be allowed to unlock
their

device.

On the prepaid side, things are bit simpler: carriers must, upon
request,

unlock a handset no later than one year after initial activation.

All unlocking, regardless of the type of customer, must be completed
within
two days of a request, and carriers are now required to inform
consumers of

their policies.

Carriers that lock devices will clearly notify customers that their

I am compiling a list of iOS text editor and word processor apps that

not boast this feature. So far, I have come up with Pages, Microsoft

well worth it if you like British accents.

James from NeoSpeech is very good for an American male voice at 2.99.

Heather is good, but I prefer Laura for an American female voice from

Voices are terribly subjective. You can hear a sample of the voices before

But, Voice Dream is the best app on the market for reading all kinds of text

Also great for audio books that are MP3 files.

Subject: Recommendations for a New Bank?

Hi all,

Sorry if you're getting this multiple times, I'm sending it to the three lists
I'm on.

Fully accessible, obviously, but also
offering accessible statements, a more modern and robust iOS app, etc. Having a
bank card with raised letters on one side wouldn't hurt either. :) I'd love to
switch to Simple, but they still haven't opened new account creation yet, plus
they don't support any sort of business account, which I'd need. I'm in the
United States, by the way. Thanks in advance for any ideas anyone might have.

RE: U.S. Carriers, You'll Have to Unlock Those Phones

2015-02-13 Thread Cris Ali
I am glad this subject has been settled. I travel overseas quite frequently.
Having an unlocked phone enables me to use SIM cards for local numbers in the
countries I visit, instead of having to pay exorbitant international roaming
prices for using my American phone number overseas. I was very disappointed
when the library of congress decision came out in 2013. I thought it was truly
illogical and inadequate, since my carrier did not invent the iOS system I have
on my iPhone and saw no digital copyrights to be protected. To me it was only a
bias decision to consolidate the big corporation's rights of monopoly, and
screw up the consumers.

U.S. carriers, you'll have to unlock those phones

Starting now, it will be much easier for people to jump from one
carrier to another and take their smartphone with them.

 by Don Reisinger

The days of carriers locking down devices to keep customers in place
 are officially dead.
Starting now, all US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid
and prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain
parameters are met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to
have all wireless carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015.

The move follows from President Obama last year signing into law the
Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which
overruled a controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress.

The debate over phone unlocking has come a long way in just a few
short years. Unlocking a phone allows owners to put the device on
whatever carrier network they choose. For years, carriers have locked
down devices, allowing them only to connect to their own networks. The
move was designed to keep customers close and not see them stray to other
 carriers.

We are pleased the FCC acknowledged the participating wireless
carriers met the deadlines to unlock their customers' devices per the
Consumer Code for Wireless Service, said Scott Bergmann, the CTIA's
vice president for regulatory affairs, in a statement. We also remind
consumers that an unlocked device does not necessarily mean an
interoperable one since different carriers use different technologies and
 spectrum bands.

For customers, the inability to unlock handsets had been a nuisance.
Many consumers, seeking better network coverage or data plan pricing,
have wanted to be able to move to a different network without having
to buy a new device. An unlocked handset would allow that interchange
between, say, ATT and T-Mobile networks. Locked devices force
customers to stick with their carrier networks and if they decide to
switch, to buy a new device on the other carrier.

In 2013, the issue of unlocking hitting a tipping point when the
Libary of Congress held that the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act
(DMCA) banned American consumers from unlocking their devices without
the consent of their carriers. Critics took issue with the ruling,
 which actually came down in
2012 but went into effect in 2013. Then in August 2014 came the
Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which
 effectively made unlocking legal again.

Under the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service that went into
effect Wednesday, carriers will have no choice but to remove locks on
devices owned by both postpaid and prepaid wireless users.

On the postpaid side, carriers must unlock devices after a customer in
good standing has fulfilled postpaid service contract, device
financing plan, or payment of applicable early termination fee. In
other words, those subscribers who get smartphones for less by paying
a subsidy at the beginning and paying in full over the life of a
contract, must have satisfied that payment covenant before they can be
 allowed to unlock their device.

On the prepaid side, things are bit simpler: carriers must, upon
request, unlock a handset no later than one year after initial activation.

All unlocking, regardless of the type of customer, must be completed
within two days of a request, and carriers are now required to inform
 consumers of their policies.

Carriers that lock devices will clearly notify customers that their
devices are eligible for unlocking at the time when their devices are

Re: reading Bookshare books

2015-02-13 Thread Christina C.
I absolutely love voice dream reader for iOS. I never ever thought I could
stand to listen to complete fiction novels with a TTS voice. However, I totally
can now. I personally love Salli because I don’t notice an excessive amount of
that sort of weird auto tune sort of drag at the end of words that some voices
do. I truly believe that this is a completely personal taste and preference
though. I prefer a softer reader instead of a bold reader. However, it depends
on what I am reading though. I do need to choose a male voice for books written
in first person by a male character though. :) Voice Dream reader lets you
listen to a sample before you make a purchase. I believe, but am not positive
that there is a free voice that comes with voice dream reader. You can make
sure you don’t love that one before you purchase a voice. There are other
voices I quite like but I’m just spreading my purchases out instead of spending
a lot of money all at once. :)
So, in short. I do think you should give voice dream reader a try. I listened
to a podcast from applevis and decided to give it a try after listening to it.
I do suggest you listen to that one because I think I would have been lost
otherwise because some of the buttons are multi function and the podcast helped
me get a lay of the land before I dove in. :)

Hi Craig,

I don't think I noticed that note about Voiceover support for the Tidal app.
One thing I would say, however, is that the Deezer app is just accessible.
Also, my wife is from the Philippines and we were looking for artists from
there. Deezer has a ton of Filipino artists, Tidal had very little. I think
Deezer actually beats most when it comes to actual availability of music, I
read they have way more than Spotify. It is just too bad that for some reason I
can't get my Deezer subscription to play via my Sonos system. I can play it and
one song may play OK, but then just about every other song plays for a minute
or so, then if I have the Sonos app open Voiceover says something to the effect
that the connection to Deezer was lost. The music then continues to play for
another 40 or 50 seconds (probably this is buffered) and then the song stop and
the next song starts playing. I have spend a lot of time with Sonos level 2
support to try and figure out what causes this with no success. If I use the
Deezer app on my iPhone I can play for hours without a single hiccup and it
can't be a bandwidth issue since I have a pretty fast connection and also
because Tidal which is probably using more bandwidth than Deezer plays just
fine without any problems. Spotify also had no such problems and I can play
Tune In stations via Sonos just fine, it's just Deezer that has this problem
and that really is too bad since otherwise it would be my service of choice.

Sieghard

Sieghard is right: unless you have high-end equipment, you may not
realize a great benefit if you subscribe to TIDAL. However, one point
to their advantage is that the TIDAL app is the only music service app
I know of that boasts VoiceOver support in its product description in

 Hello Sonos owners,

Just wanted to let you know that while Tidal is not officially supported by
Sonos, you can add the service to your Sonos system via the Beta/Sonos Labs
feature. Here is what you do:

 1. Go to www.TidalHiFi.com http://www.TidalHiFi.com and sign up for
an account if you don't already have one

 2. Open the Sonos app on your iphone and go to the music menu, then
 Settings, then My Services

 3. You will see a list of the services you have setup with the
title/heading of in Use. Double tap on In Use and then flick right to
 the beta option.

 4. Do a 3-finger swipe up until you get to the end of the listing of
services, it's in alphabetical order so Tidal is towards the end.

 5. Double tap on Tidal, then on Add Account, say you already have an
account and then enter your login email address and password.

I have just set it up and I'm about 5 songs into an album I added to the My
Music section, the Tidal implementation seems to be very nice on Sonos and
while the first song skipped to the next after a few seconds, it's been
playing solid and without skips and drop-outs ever since.

I just got off the phone with Sonos support to try and figure out why my
Deezer account/subscription constantly skips after playing half the song.
The tech support guy I talked to was as friendly and helpful as always with
Sonos support. I submitted a couple of diagnostics and he said he is going
to escalate this to the next level since he doesn't see much in the
diagnostic reports which would indicate why it's doing this. For

  1. I can only view six months of account history, and the PDF statements
they provide for longer history appear to be inaccessible.
  2. Their app logs you out after you close it, even if you only leave it
for a minute. The app also fails to work with braille screen input, so you
can't use that to type your password, and does not support Touch ID.
  3. When I try to use the TD Bank website on the Mac, Safari crashes. It
has done this for years, and every time I ask TD Bank support about it, I
get a different answer. No one can offer a fix, though.

What I'm looking for is something better. Fully accessible, obviously, but
also offering accessible statements, a more modern and robust iOS app, etc.
Having a bank card with raised letters on one side wouldn't hurt either. :)
I'd love to switch to Simple, but they still haven't opened new account

reading Kendle books one line at a time

2015-02-13 Thread Esther
Hi Ann, I think, as Lynda remarked, you're asking about the Kindle app
(spelled with an I). If you pause your continuous reading with a two finger
tap, you can use the rotor to read by character, word, or line, on a single
screen. There's no way to read one line at a time in continuous reading mode,
or to read line by line without using the rotor, for those using Braille
devices.

HTH,

Esther

Re: Question about navigation in Voice Dream Writer

2015-02-13 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Wayne,

Yes, if you use outline view, the Next and Previous Item keystrokes on your
braille display will move you to the next or previous sentence, paragraph, or
heading, depending how you've set it, and you'll be able to read just fine. If
you want to edit the text you're moving through in outline view, double-tap or
use a cursor routing button to go into the text with the current element
selected. This makes it easy to move to the beginning or end of the element. Or
flick up or down to Edit Text and double-tap, and the cursor will be at the
beginning of the element, ready for editing.

The app doesn't appear to remember my place. Fortunately, though, in addition
to the built-in search functionality, which is quite good, the braille
display's search command (F-chord, search string, Enter) works.

Best,
Anna

Thanks Anna. If I used the outline navigation method with my Braille

sounds like, from your description, if I use the first method and then
flick left with the braille display that my focus would be taken to
the next text that I scrolled to. Do I have this right? Also, one
other related question, does the app remember your position in each
 file you read/edit?

 Hi Wayne,

You have a couple of options for navigating. If you flick through the items
on screen, you find the document text and then several controls. The first
control moves the cursor; flick down to move forward, or flick up to move
backward. The second control determines how far you move when you flick the
first control. So to move by sentences, you would set the second control to
sentence, and then flick down on the first control to move to the next
sentence, or up to move to the previous one.

Another way is to turn on the document outline. You can set a navigation
unit within the outline. Then as you flick through the screen, each sentence
(or whatever navigation unit you chose) becomes an item you can flick to.

If you use the first method, braille doesn't display the text you flick to.
However, at any time, you can flick left once, and focus, including what's
on the braille display, will go to the exact spot in the text where you were
 reading.

 I hope that makes sense.

 Anna

Hi,
Excellent idea. On my various iPhones, I've tried that stupid pinch gesture
more times than I care to count and I've rarely gotten it to work. The
two-finger swipe right could work satisfactorily. Alternatively, perhaps a
double-tap-and-hold at the beginning and another double-tap-and hold at the
end of the text, sort of like setting block markers, could work, too. Just
a thought.

I believe there's an update for iOS after 8.1.1 (8.1.3 is coming to mind,
but maybe I'm wrong). I'd install that first, just in case.

I'd also suggest that it might be the way you're doing the gesture. I'm
not slamming you in any way - I've used iOS for over four years, and I
*still* can't reliably select or un-select. Sometimes it doesn't work,
sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it selects way more than I wanted.
I've emailed Apple Accessibility to ask if they would consider changing from
a pinch gesture to a two-finger swipe left/right, as that would be much more
reliable and easy to perform.

Anyway, keep at it, and install that update. Sorry I can't offer anything
more helpful.

RE: phone basics

2015-02-13 Thread Deidre Muccio
Alex

First when I am answering the phone on the sly, often there is a lapse in VO
reading me buttons for accepting, declining, etc. I do not leave the phone
app open while I am doing other things so I am rarely in the phone app when
calls come in.

When on a call that I've asked Siri to dial, and it rings, that is when
there is a notable lag in when vo reads the numbers on the keypad. I'm not
always in phone when I call someone back, and often I simply ask Siri to
dial for me. Is it then that I need to quickly get to the in call item so
I can hit the menu item that I want? Using the app switcher as one person
suggested is a bit slow and hangs things up.

Did you really mean to say that there is a way to tap on the status bar at
the top of a home screen to get to in calling? If so, I did not know that.

And I am really confused by your description below of what to do to pause
Siri.

You say to hold the button down the whole time you are speaking to pause
Siri. What is the point of speaking if you are wanting to pause? See below.

Alex wrote:

* To be able to pause, just hold the Home Button down the entire time you're
speaking. If you are holding it once Siri activates, it becomes sort of a
push to talk button. Pause as long as you like, and Siri will wait until
that button is released.

Note that the second item can be a source of frustration.. If you're holding
the button down too long, when you release it, Siri could think you just
issued a very short command. This is why Siri sometimes seems to stop
listening almost immediately. It's a matter of practice to get the timing
down right, but again, if long pauses are your problem, yo might find this
feature quite helpful.

want to play with a random player. After you have made your choices, double
tap on play now. I always choose to play with a friend. If you choose to
play with a friend, the next screen will let you either invite a Facebook
friend, or to search for a player. The game is very accessible, except when
you are given a question that says Who Is This or What Flag Is This, and a
picture is shown, but if you have enough coins, I think it is 3, then you
can skip the question and get another one. Just remember you only have 30
seconds to answer the question. After each question, you will be given three
buttons, one is fun, one is boring and one is continue. I ignore the fun and
boring buttons and just double tap on continue to get my next question if I
got the previous question correct. If you miss the question, you can double
tap on Continue to take you to the game screen so you can choose a game with
someone else if you have any other games that you are in the middle of. I

believe the person who gets the most correct answers in the fastest time is
the winner. If you choose Classic mode you will play one on one with another
player. Then you have to choose if you want to play with a friend or if you
want to play with a random player.
hope this ramble has made some kind of sense. The game is a lot of fun.

I did buy the ad free version. It is frustrating to try to deal with the
ads. It is worth the money to go ahead and purchase the ad free version. I
love it and it is very addictive. Just can't get people to play and when you
do, they end up abandoning the game as you only have a total of 3 days to
play your turn. I think it is 3, it may even be 2 days.

The first screen you come to when you start the app is a splash screen with
music, which does nothing after you tap the middle of that screen, then you
were taken to a screen where you can choose a new game. you'll need to swipe
to the right until you find a new game button. The second green is where you
select your language, and then who you want to play with. Since I haven't
found anybody to play with on Facebook yet, I choose random. The final screen
before the game starts is the spin screen double tap to spin button and you
will get a category to play your take into another splash screen it says the
name of the category and then there's a play now button at the bottom right,
which you will eventually find by swiping right.

controlling music

2015-02-13 Thread Dave Bahr
Hi. How do I switch to the music player from within an app to skip a
song or pause or something? Surprisingly, for someone who is a
musicologist, I've never really used my phone for music. But now I have
a bigger model and can use my subsonic server too. I also have had an
issue though where answering the phone with the two finger double tap
has started the music player, anyone else have that problem?

thanks, dave

Re: phone basics

2015-02-13 Thread Alex Hall
Yes, I meant pause, in that you can pause in your speaking. If you pause while
not holding the Home Button, Siri will assume you're done and will start trying
to act on whatever you said. If you have the Home Button down, though, you can
stop speaking for as long as you like, then speak more, and Siri will keep
listening the whole time.

I'm not following what you mean by the Phone App. Whether that app is open or
not, a keypad will always appear during a call unless you do something to
dismiss it (lock the device or hit the Home Button, for instance). I also
notice no lag when using VoiceOver during a call, and I'm on an iPhone 5. I
don't remember what device you have, but perhaps it is an older one?
On Feb 13, 2015, at 3:48 PM, Deidre Muccio deim...@verizon.net wrote:

First when I am answering the phone on the sly, often there is a lapse in VO
reading me buttons for accepting, declining, etc. I do not leave the phone
app open while I am doing other things so I am rarely in the phone app when
 calls come in.
When on a call that I’ve asked Siri to dial, and it rings, that is when there
is a notable lag in when vo reads the numbers on the keypad. I’m not always
in phone when I call someone back, and often I simply ask Siri to dial for
me. Is it then that I need to quickly get to the “in call” item so I can hit
the menu item that I want? Using the app switcher as one person suggested is
a bit slow and hangs things up.

Pause as long as you like, and Siri will wait until that
 button is released.

RE: Trivia Crack

2015-02-13 Thread Jim Ruby
Once you know you got the answer wrong, do a two finger swipe up and listen,
you will hear the question read and you will hear what answer is correct when
it reads the choices. For example below I will answer yellow and you will hear
the correct answer red cause it will say it is selected.

Example
What color is my truck?
Selected Red
Green
Blue
Selected Yellow

Hope this helps.

Re: phone basics

2015-02-13 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi Deidra,

A few observations:
First of all you don't have to find the answer button when the phone rings. You
can do a 2 finger double-tap. Of course, if you want the other options you have
to find the buttons after all.

Also, when you make a call, the keypad does not appear until the line is
answered, I think. So, while it's ringing, there's no keypad but, ones there's
something on the other end of the line, you should see a keypad as long as vo
is on.
If this does not work I'm not shure what else is going on.

Good luck,

Ioana

though, you can stop speaking for as long as you like, then speak more, and
Siri will keep listening the whole time.

don't remember what device you have, but perhaps it is an older one?

 calls come in.
When on a call that I’ve asked Siri to dial, and it rings, that is when
there is a notable lag in when vo reads the numbers on the keypad. I’m not
always in phone when I call someone back, and often I simply ask Siri to
dial for me. Is it then that I need to quickly get to the “in call” item so
I can hit the menu item that I want?

There is a button that says new game, double tap there and if the
language
you desire is other than english, then choose a different language,
English
I do believe is the default language. Then choose your game mode.
Choosing
Challenge mode will set up a game with several different people where you
have to answer the same questions as the others who are playing you, I
believe the person who gets the most correct answers in the fastest
time is
the winner. If you choose Classic mode you will play one on one with
another
player. Then you have to choose if you want to play with a friend or
if you
want to play with a random player. After you have made your choices,
double
tap on play now. I always choose to play with a friend. If you choose to
play with a friend, the next screen will let you either invite a Facebook
friend, or to search for a player. The game is very accessible, except
when
you are given a question that says Who Is This or What Flag Is This,
and a
picture is shown, but if you have enough coins, I think it is 3, then you
can skip the question and get another one. Just remember you only have 30
seconds to answer the question. After each question, you will be given
three
buttons, one is fun, one is boring and one is continue. I ignore the
fun and
boring buttons and just double tap on continue to get my next question
if I
got the previous question correct. If you miss the question, you can
double
tap on Continue to take you to the game screen so you can choose a
game with
someone else if you have any other games that you are in the middle of. I
hope this ramble has made some kind of sense. The game is a lot of fun.

You can use the App Switcher like you would for any app. Just double tap

I'm not sure it's any easier, but you can also use the Control Panel.
Touch the status bar at the top, such as where the time is located and
then do a three finger swipe up. You'll have a widget in the control

Re: Sonos and the Tidal music service

2015-02-13 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sieghard.

You have now officially joined a small group of folks who are actively
urging me to join the Deezer fan club.  smile  I may indeed succumb;
but for now, I'm hoping someone will provide information on why it is
that Deezer has not yet come to the U.S. as it has to Canada. Just
one more reason why our Neighbor to the North is an enjoyable place to
be.

 Hi Craig,

I guess you'll just have to buy your first Sonos component then *smile*.
Here is information from the Deezer website:

How Do I Get Deezer Elite Within the US?

 1. Install your Sonos App - Download and install the Sonos App:
 * on Android
 * on iOS

 2. Access Deezer through your Sonos App. Only Deezer via the Sonos App
gives you access to Deezer Elite accounts.

 3. Create your Deezer Account and Subscribe to Deezer Elite.
Congratulations, you are now a Deezer Elite customer!

Basically Deezer is currently limited to Sonos customers in the US. For a
change us Canadians get the advantage since I can also just download the
Deezer iOS app and use the service that way. I am actually going to upgrade
my currently free Deezer Premium Plus account which I got for free for 1
year with the purchase of my Sonos Playbar and see if that fixes the problem
I am having. I believe as a Sonos user who got the service for free Deezer
is offering the upgrade to Deezer Elite for $50 for 1 year which is a
 bargain.

 Sieghard

 Hello, Sieghard.

I'm sorry you're having such trouble with Deezer. I don't yet own
Sonos equipment so can't test for this problem for you. As far as I
can tell, without Sonos or Bose equipment, Deezer is still unavailable
in the U.S. When I click on the Deezer site, I am still told that
 Deezer is coming soon.

 Hi Craig,

I don't think I noticed that note about Voiceover support for the Tidal
 app.
One thing I would say, however, is that the Deezer app is just
 accessible.
Also, my wife is from the Philippines and we were looking for artists
 from
there. Deezer has a ton of Filipino artists, Tidal had very little. I
 think
Deezer actually beats most when it comes to actual availability of music,
 I
read they have way more than Spotify. It is just too bad that for some
reason I can't get my Deezer subscription to play via my Sonos system. I
 can
play it and one song may play OK, but then just about every other song
 plays
for a minute or so, then if I have the Sonos app open Voiceover says
something to the effect that the connection to Deezer was lost. The music
then continues to play for another 40 or 50 seconds (probably this is
buffered) and then the song stop and the next song starts playing. I have
spend a lot of time with Sonos level 2 support to try and figure out what
causes this with no success. If I use the Deezer app on my iPhone I can
 play
for hours without a single hiccup and it can't be a bandwidth issue since
 I
have a pretty fast connection and also because Tidal which is probably
 using
more bandwidth than Deezer plays just fine without any problems. Spotify
also had no such problems and I can play Tune In stations via Sonos just
fine, it's just Deezer that has this problem and that really is too bad
since otherwise it would be my service of choice.

 Sieghard

Sieghard is right: unless you have high-end equipment, you may not
realize a great benefit if you subscribe to TIDAL. However, one point
to their advantage is that the TIDAL app is the only music service app
I know of that boasts VoiceOver support in its product description in
 the App Store.

Yes,you can. But if you are using it just on the iPhone and you are
 happy
with Spotify there is probably not much reason to switch. Tidal is twice
 as
much as Spotify and you would need some really high-end headset or
 equipment
like Sonos to hear the difference.
