A Very Specific Question About iPhone Backup Files

2015-07-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Today, in preparation for installing a copy of iOS 9 on one of my iPhones, I
decided, after backing up both my 5 S and 6 Plus, both running iOS 8.4, to
see what backups are being listed in iTunes.

Now keep in mind that I am using iTunes 11 for Windows on a Windows 7 PC but
I will appreciate replies from Mac users, as well as PC users running the
latest version of iTunes.

I noticed that for both my 5 S and my 6 Plus, there is only one backup
listed in the table of backups while there are multiple backup entries for
my iPhone 4, 4 S, and even my old 3GS. The multiple entries for these older
devices are delineated by their dates. I have not attached these older
devices to my PC in over two years.

The only explanation I can come up with, on my own that is, is that only the
5 S and the 6 Plus are using encrypted backups. Can that be the reason for
each device's singular backup entry? I expected to see multiple backup
entries, delineated by date, for both my 5 S and 6 Plus but there are none.
There is only one entry for each device.

So, I would ask you to let me know what you have listed in your iTunes
backup table for your series 5 or series 6 device. To see your list of
backups,do the following:

1.
Open iTunes on your computer.

2.
>From the Edit menu, select Preferences.

3.
Select the Device Tab. Here you will see a list of device backups.

Thank you in advance for any feedback on this.

Mark

I purchased a used iPhone 5S from Gazelle

2015-07-19 Thread Vicky Collins
Yes, I know, grin, this is of course not the best time to be
buying a phone. But, well, seeing as I wanted to test iOS 9
without risking my iPhone 6, and then I thought I might give the
phone to a family member once I was done testing, I decided to go
ahead and make the purchase from Gazelle. I got a used 5S 16GB
AT&T model the site claimed to be in excellent condition for
$413.99, which included two day air shipping.

The Gazelle site was easy enough to use, as I mostly opted to use
it with my computer running Windows 7. However, I never could
seem to create an account after adding something to my cart as
their FAQ claimed. But, rather, I had to finally create the
account first, then add the iPhone to my cart and then go through
the checkout process. Also, I never could get my debit card to
go through, getting some error message about fraud. but, then
when I switched to paying via PayPal, even with using the
checking account the previously attempted debit card was tied to,
the purchase went through without a problem.

I could have chosen various shipping methods, but I opted for the
two day, as I wanted to be sure the phone would arrive while I
was off on vacation. Although, since I'm in Indianapolis, and
the package shipped from Louisville, I'm almost thinking I may
have delayed it getting to me, as it spent a whole day in
Louisville doing nothing before it was shipped to me on that
second day. I also opted for their excellent condition model
phone for $399 plus shipping, as opposed to the one they termed
in good condition for $329 plus shipping.

The box seemed to be packed well enough, as I had to pretty much
tear up the box to get to the phone. The phone was in a zip lock
bag, and that bag was sandwiched between two pieces of foam. The
package also contained the lightning cable, the wall adapter and
a thank you card for buying from Gazelle.

I had no trouble at all getting VoiceOver to start and in setting
up the phone. It came with iOS 8.3, but I updated to iOS 8.4,
and then to the 9.0 beta. Although, grin, with this first public
beta, I very quickly decided to get my education in entering
recovery mode and restoring back to 8.4. And, 8.4 works great on
the 5S, by the way, can't tell much difference than on my 6.

Surprisingly, I was able to use the AT&T site and request that
the 5S be unlocked, and I got back within just a couple of
minutes the congratulations message that the phone could be
unlocked. Thus, I followed the instructions in the email and did
the backup and restore with iTunes and indeed got the
congratulations message on my PC that my phone had been unlocked.
But, not surprisingly, grin, when I went to the Apple support
site and checked the warranty status, of course I was told there
was no active phone support or warranty for the device as those
had expired. The AT&T site had a captcha, for which I used
FireFox, but the Apple site did not have one. By the way, the
Apple site for checking if find my iPhone is turned off on a
device does have a captcha, but the audioit finally offered me
was reasonably clear.

All in all, although I was kind of surprised to learn I could buy
used phones from Gazelle, as I thought they just purchased used
phones, I am so far very pleased with my purchase, as well as
with the timely shipment notification and shipping of the
product.

Updating an ibook

2015-07-19 Thread Mary Otten
I have an iBook which says it has an update. That is, I go to the iBooks store,
and I see the title next to which is the word update as a button. I double tap
this button, and nothing seems to happen. I wait a few minutes, and the button
is still there saying update. How do I know if it is actually updated? How do I
know what needed to be updated? It's all very mysterious and not very helpful.
Has anyone had this experience?

The keyboard shortcut is VO+Shift+m.

I think either escape or doing that keystroke again when you get the app where
you want it will release the app. I’m not sure, so maybe a little trial and

The music app crashes a lot for me on my iPhone 6 plus. I thought it was
just me since nobody else has complained about this that I have noticed. It
especially does this anytime I am in the you tab browsing and then I select
a suggestion, once I get to that playlist or album, the app crashes. The
only way I can avoid this is to flick up and down on a suggested playlist or
album and choose play but if I activate the link then the music app crashes.
I also get random crashes in other areas if I am browsing but this is the
most consistent and easiest to explain. :)

any shortcut key for two finger scrub or back button on bluetooth keyboard

2015-07-19 Thread TaraPrakash
Dear all. The obvious answer to the question about two fingers scrub or back
button on bluetooth keyboard is the escape key. Intriguingly, yet
interestingly, I am trying a new bluetoooth keyboard on which escape key works
as shortcut for home. So, If I were to use escape key while in the email app,
it will take me to home screen. Vey sturdy keyboard and keys are well spaced
out. I will check if his keyboard has already been reviewed or I am planning to
do it myself.
Coming back to my problem, what key combination can I use to achieve two finger
scrub?
Thanks for your responses.

RE: question about transferring videos to my iphone or ipod touch

2015-07-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Tara,

I don't know if you're using a Mac or a PC version of iTunes but, generally
speaking, the broad strokes to accomplishing your goal of adding videos to your
iPhone 6, via iTunes is as follows:

1.
Import the video to your iTunes Library on your computer. You can do this via
the File Menu in iTunes.

2.
If the file extension is .mp4 or was not purchased from Apple, it will most
likely be placed in the Home Videos section of iTunes on your computer. So,
open the Home Videos area of iTunes on your computer and locate the file. Make
certain that the file can be played in iTunes by clicking on the video. If the
video cannot be played in iTunes it will not be synced to your iPhone under any
circumstances.

3.
Once you have confirmed that the video is iTunes compatible, open the videos
area on your iPhone, from within iTunes on your computer. This must be
donewhile the phone is connected to your computer, of course.

4.
Place a checkbox next to the video you wish to sync and then sync your device.

5.
Finally, open the Videos app on your iPhone, select the Home Videos tab,
located near the bottom right edge of the display, and you should see your
newly synced video.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Restoring albums deleted from iTunes- but saved on a backup

2015-07-19 Thread Don & Cher
I deleted all the songs on 2 albums that were 256 bits so I could import the
CDs again using Apple lossless. I only then found that the CD cases were
empty. I had saved the 'My Music' folder on a backup drive earlier that day,
but need to know exactly what all needs to be copied back into the hard
drive's iTunes folder in order to restore all iTunes functionality. (This is
not a windows backup file, just a straight copy of the entire My Music
folder, so that part should be straightforward.) Thanks much.

The music app crashes a lot for me on my iPhone 6 plus. I thought it was just
me since nobody else has complained about this that I have noticed. It
especially does this anytime I am in the you tab browsing and then I select a
suggestion, once I get to that playlist or album, the app crashes. The only way
I can avoid this is to flick up and down on a suggested playlist or album and
choose play but if I activate the link then the music app crashes.
I also get random crashes in other areas if I am browsing but this is the most
consistent and easiest to explain. :)

Re: ios 8.4 music ap crashing iPhone 6+

2015-07-19 Thread Christina C.
I also get
random crashes in other areas if I am browsing but this is the most consistent
and easiest to explain. :)

RE: Re-arranging apps using a Bluetooth Keyboard

2015-07-19 Thread Richard Turner
I have not done this for a while since I find using my finger easier.

The keyboard shortcut is VO+Shift+m.

I think either escape or doing that keystroke again when you get the app where
you want it will release the app. I’m not sure, so maybe a little trial and
error and you will get it or someone can post better directions.

accessible gaelic language iPhone apps?

2015-07-19 Thread 'ChalmersAS' via VIPhone
Guys

A bit late to the party, I know, but this has been an issue for me for a while
as well. I tried to learn Scots Gaelic a couple of times in the old days before
iPhones and it was murder not being able to read and write it on my Mac.

Clearly there are two difficulties, dictionary and voice. The one is not much
use without the other, I fear.

I wonder if this is a case for making representations for these to be
developed? I have long thought that the best way to preserve Gaelic is to make
sure kids can make proper use of it on their iDevices. The Scottish Government
spends substantial amounts of money on bilingual road signs and the like and I
can’t help but think this would be a far more cost effective thing to fund.

I am going to bring this up with my MP, who took her oath in Parliament in
Gaelic, so must be sympathetic and I will report back.

Anyone with any other useful contacts might do the same.

Best

Adrienne

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been playing around a bit. Firstly, I went to
that edit box, then I pressed the home button to speak to Siri. It will then
find the info, but not via navigon. Next, I tried the dictation feature, being
in the edit field, and then activating dictation and speak the address. Now,
the info would be entered into the field, and could then tap on search, and
navigate to that address. I guess I did not think of the normal dictation
function on the keyboard as being part of Siri's work. That seems for me the
only way it works, unless I am missing something. Thanks for helping.

I think in that context, they meant you have to be in the search box and
instead of typing in the one line search, you would dictate it with Siri.

Hi Jenny, just to add my voice to those expressing a preference for Tweetings.
If you read a lot of Twitter and want to read in chronological order, it's a

it has a comprehensive feature set. I wrote a blog post about Tweetings here.

Hi Listers

I haven't had anything to do with twitter as yet, so I'm looking for

thanks in anticipation.

RE: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: facebook alerts

2015-07-19 Thread Jeremy Gilley
I went through settings, found facebook and toggled off alerts.

I am not sure where else to go in settings to turn it off.

I went into the notifications section of settings as well and facebook
wasn't even in that section.

Yes, it is sending me text messages as well.

This is driving me crazy. It used to be rare messages, but in the past month
or so, i am getting tons and tons of messages and update notices.

So, like I said, driving me crazy lol.

Anywhere else to look?

How do I stop getting all alerts from facebook?

Any help would be much appreciated.
