MODERATOR NOTE: An Explanation of Recently Deleted Messages to the List and a Suggestion Regarding List Subscription Requests

2015-09-13 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Some of you may have been notified that your unposted messages to the list
were recently deleted or rejected.

Let me assure you that, unless notified, off-list, by either Cara or me, in
no way have you or are your posts being blocked from the list.

The simple truth of the matter is that Google, for whatever reason, tags
some posts to the list as spam or other unwanted material and places them in
a queue for review by a moderator.

As I only recently began assisting Cara in managing the lists, I dumped a
queue of held messages some of which having been held for over a month in
order to wipe the proverbial slate clean, making management tasks a little
easier.

Please accept my apology if you received such a notice and know that it was
merely a matter of some proverbial house cleaning, nothing more.

I would like to suggest that if you post a message to the list and it does
not appear within 24 hours, to please write to Cara and me, off-list, making
us aware of the problem so we can go into the queue and find it for you. My
direct email address is: mk...@ucla.edu

I am aware that some people have encountered difficulty in subscribing to
the list or changing email address info, etc. Please remember that the best
way to insure that your list subscription requests get processed is to write
a short explanation as to why you want to join or change your list info.

A list subscription request containing at least one sentence, in addition to
an email address, is far more likely to be approved than one containing an
email address, only.

If you feel as though your list subscription email requests have been
overlooked, please send a direct email to Cara and me.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and I look forward to serving
you as a list moderator.

Most Sincerely,

Mark

Re: Looking for an extra battery that includes a lightning connector

2015-09-13 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I have found a type of cables that I really like they are retracktable. You can
get them both very cheap and a and a little more expensive, the cheapest is the
smalest, but the more expensive are more durable.

Best regards Annie.

Moderator note - Items for sale on this list -was- Re: couple apple products for sale

2015-09-13 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

Let me remind all of you that unless for sale postings are approved by a
moderator, they are not appropriate for this list.

Please, if you wish to post an item for sale here, contact either myself or
Mark Taylor letting us know what the item is, which you would like to sell.

Chances are we will happily approve it as long as it is an appropriate item for
this list and you’ll then be welcome to post your item or items here.

Thank you so much for reading and please do have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers!

problem resetting account information

2015-09-13 Thread Vicki
I need to make a purchase in the app store, and because my account information
has changed at my bank, I need to reset the information. Everything seems to be
enter correctly, but I keep getting a message that some required information is
missing and it is highlighted in red. So I try again and finally after so many
tries, my session timed out.

Before I try again, is there any great secret to resetting the information?

Thanks.

Ravpower makes one, and I got that on Amazon. The little cable built in to
it isn't more than a couple inches long though, but it does exist, and it

I expect you're right, Allen, but I can always hope. I just cannot see
hauling around a long cable and plug in the battery when I'm out and about
and need to use my phone.

Such an external battery would be limited to idevices since the android
world uses micro USB for charging its products and manufacturers are smart
enough to build their batteries with both full sized USB and micro USB
ports so that with the appropriate cables, users of both iOS and android
devices can use their products. That just makes good economic sense.

Re: problems with sounds and voice-over

2015-09-13 Thread Gmail
Gi, Dave,

Don't reset your phon just yet. If you haven't done so already, add the volume
setting to your rotor. You can find that in the Settings app, under
General/Accessibility/VoiceOver/Rotor. After that, turn to volume in your rotor
and do a one-finger flick up. This will raise your VO volume. Then use your
volume down button to lower your VO sounds. If your VO volume gets too low
again, just do another one-finger flick up with your rotor set to volume.

Thanks,
Ari

Want to get voicedream writer. Can I search, like doing a jaws find, with this
program? Also, does it work with braille displays?

Thanks!

problems with sounds and voice-over

2015-09-13 Thread Dave
Hi.

I am using an iPhone 4s. I am considering a new phone, but I will keep the 4s
as a back up. I am having trouble with the sounds being really loud and voice
over is very quiet. I have tried turning audio ducking on and off with no real
difference. I have tried, rebooting voice over, and of course rebooting the
phone. , I have also tried holding the home and power button down until the
apple logo appears. I am considering doing a reset where the option is to
reset all settings, not network settings. I don’t have iTunes installed and am
reluctant to use it, as it seems not to work well with my windows machines. .
If I use the “reset all settings” option, will it keep all my folders? Will the
triple click home still turn voice over on? Will I have to log back in to all
my apps? Lastly, will this reset fix my sounds?

This problem has only started having this problem over the last few weeks.
Please share answers on list as this could be helpful to others.
many thanks
Dave

2015-09-13 Thread Richard Turner
It has a search function, I have no idea if it is like the Jaws find since I am
not a Jaws user.

It does work with braille displays.

You may also want to right to supp...@voicedream.com for more details.

NFL Game Pass update

2015-09-13 Thread Marie
I have the NFL mobile app from Verizon and signed up for the 7 day trial of
Game Pass.
I am now listening to the live radio stream of the Seattle/St.Louis game on my
Iphone. First I went to the Matchup tab, when I found the game I wanted to
hear, I clicked on Seattle and was taken to a page which let me select which
team I wanted to get the stream from and then on Listen Now. It is working
beautifully at the moment. At half time they are tied at 10 apiece.

Hi,
I can confirm this it also stops if you leave the app as well which for me so
far is the only way I’ve actually found to stop audio at will.

No, the only way I found to do this is to exit the app by pressing the home
button, then when you tap on the app, it will go right back to the broadcast
and begin playing on its own.
In answer to an earlier question, it does stop when the screen locks so I had
to set auto lock to never.

Re: NFL Game Pass update

2015-09-13 Thread Robin Frost
Hey Marie,
Have you figured out how to start and stop audio at will in the app?

I have the NFL mobile app from Verizon and signed up for the 7 day trial of
Game Pass.
I am now listening to the live radio stream of the Seattle/St.Louis game on my
Iphone. First I went to the Matchup tab, when I found the game I wanted to
hear, I clicked on Seattle and was taken to a page which let me select which
team I wanted to get the stream from and then on Listen Now. It is working
beautifully at the moment. At half time they are tied at 10 apiece.

Re: Bad news concerning gamepass and the NFL mobile app.

2015-09-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
My understanding was that audio was always available on the PC and Mac,
and that it would be coming to the mobile app, which was supposed to
have happened in the update to the NFL Mobile app a few days ago. I'll
be curious to hear if this works an if you get the radio feed or just
the audio of the TV feed. Since you get to choose between the home feed
and the away feed, I'm assuming this means you'll get the radio broadcast.

Although NFL Game Pass does make it convenient to pull up any game, it
isn't the only way to listen to NFL games. I'm listening to the radio
feed of a game right now through the team's home page.

I point it out. Second, I told the representative that I was blind and
the video didn't matter to me that much, but I did want the live audio
during the game. Upon further discussion, he assured me that I could
listen to the audio both on a computer or in the NFL Mobile app. When
I asked him how to do it with the app, he said that you select the
Matchups tab, the game you wanted, and then the home or away feed for
the team. He indicated that once you are signed in on the app and have
started the Game Pass free 7 day trial, that the option to listen to
the audio would appear. Since the season has barely started I don't
know how well this works in practice. However, given that there looks
to be virtually no other way to hear any games this season outside of
the Game Pass subscription, I am ready to bite the bullet and pay the
$99.99. Also, you are not charged until after the 7 day free trial,
and if you cancel before the end of the trial then you are not out
anything. Finally, just for a comparison, I called Sirius to ask about
online subscription options. After I explained that I wasn't
interested in getting a receiver and only wanted the online plans, I
was told of an online plan for $14.99 monthly before taxes and such
that I could get. The representative said that since I live in Texas,
the total would be around $17. I hung up and did some quick
calculations; the Sirius plan would cost around $215 per year, verses
the NFL Game Pass for one payment of $99.99 yearly. Not knocking
Sirius but all I really want is the game audio and am seriously
considering taking the leap. I will at least start my free trial and
see how the app works as far as accessibility. If it is doable then I
will definitely report back. For more information, go to:

I did download several apps for specific teams but who knows how
accessible those will be, and even if they will have the ability to
stream the game.

You can get the NFL Mobile app from the App Store. You can sign up for
Game Pass on line. I assume you can also get it as an in app purchase
with the NFL Mobile app. I'm not sure if Verizon customers get a break
on the price. I know in the past, Verizon customers would get some

pre-ordering with the Apple Store app

2015-09-13 Thread Vicky Collins
I first have a question, then I'll talk about my experience using
the Apple Store app to pre-order an iPhone here in the United
States. Is it possible to pre-order an unlocked iPhone 6S or 6S
Plus using the Apple Store app? When using the app, I see the
option to order a contract free iPhone; then, when I select this
option, the app shows step1 us prodselect tmobilelo. And, I'm
not quite sure what this means, not sure if this is different
from a factory unlocked phone normally available from Apple a few
months after the new iPhones go on sale. Although, it kind of
looks like some sort of T-Mobile model phone.

As for the rest of my experience with the Apple Store app and
pre-ordering, I opted to sleep in and try to see what I could do
around eight o'clock yesterday morning. And, I was able to go in
and pre-order the Space Gray iPhone 6S Plus 64GB to be delivered
September 25th. I had looked at the contract free choice, but
didn't at that time realize I had to double tap on that step1
message stated above to get it to work, so thought it was only an
in store option. Thus, I pre-ordered the AT model, thankfully
being able to choose to pay full purchase price this time, as you
might recall it took me forever to get that Next plan paid off
when I purchased the 6 Plus last year.

When I was purchasing that said carrier model, I was made aware
of a $15 upgrade fee, even though I had paid off my Next plan
contract several months ago. Of course I had to research that
fee further, and found that AT had indeed changed their upgrade
fees as indicated from:

www.att.com/shop/wireless/upgrade-advantage.html

Then, I checked further and saw this iPhone 6S and 6S Plus buying
guide indicating that one could get an unlocked phone from Apple
right away:

m.imore.com/how-buy-iphone-6s-and-iphone-6s-plus-united-states

When I read that article, I went back to the Apple Store app and
looked again, and that is when I paid more attention and saw how
to make the contract free option show up such that I could pay
outright for that selection. I then canceled my AT order,
something that was quite easily done on the Apple web site with
just a few keystrokes, but haven't yet submitted another order.
By the way, the AT and contract free Space Gray iPhone 6S 64GB
were still showing a September 25th delivery date as of an hour
ago, meaning around 11:30 AM EDT on Sunday morning, while both
the contract free and AT models for the Space Gray 64GB 6S Plus
were showing a 3 to 4 week delivery time.

2015-09-13 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Where do you get this? From Verizon? The app store?

Is it the same price from Verizon?

Thanks, Keith

I have the NFL mobile app from Verizon and signed up for the 7 day trial of
Game Pass.
I am now listening to the live radio stream of the Seattle/St.Louis game on my
Iphone. First I went to the Matchup tab, when I found the game I wanted to
hear, I clicked on Seattle and was taken to a page which let me select which
team I wanted to get the stream from and then on Listen Now. It is working
beautifully at the moment. At half time they are tied at 10 apiece.

Thanks,
Ari

Hopefully this gets fixed in an update to the app, because it’s a bug right

Ah. If you want your notification sounds to stay at a constant volume and not
change, you're going to want to go into Settings/Soumds and turn off the
setting called Switch with Buttons. It's under the Ringer and Alerts heading.

The app is on the app store and right now Verizon is offering the service
for free. Even if you don’t take the Game Pass, you can still get the live
videos and if you can follow okay from them you can save yourself $99. I am not
sure I will extend the 7 day trial but will wait until this weekend is over to
decide. I can also get the games today on Pro Radio with no problems and that
does not cost me anything. so I am thinking with NFL Mobile and pro Radio I
have
two possible choices without paying the ridiculous price of the NFL Game

RE: problem resetting account information

2015-09-13 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Vicky,

Generally speaking, there are two methods to using a Smartphone screen reader.
The primary method, more by culture than by anything else, is based on swiping
from either left to right or right to left in order to place focus on the
various elements of the display.

In the early days of iPHone, this was the surest method to make certain that
the user did not skip or accidentally bypass important information on the
screen.

The second method, used primarily by Android Smartphone owners, as a result of
technology rather than culture, is referred to as explore-by-touch. This
method requires that the user slide her/his finger around the screen in order
to detect the various elements being displayed.

For whatever reason, the swipe method sometimes skips items in iOS in the
currently released version of the system. As a result, if one uses only the
swipe method, he/she may unknowingly skip over important information.

To deliberately experience this for yourself, do the following:

1.
>From the LaunchPad, single-finger double-tap the Settings icon.

2.
Now, simply single-finger swipe from left to right as many times as you like to
go down the list of items. Take note of what you hear. I suggest that you
swipe at least 12 times or so,

3.
Next, single-finger swipe from right to left in order to reverse your
direction, moving up the list. Chances are, you will hear more items than you
did in the first instance. Some items that are commonly skipped, when going
down the list are FaceTime, Messages, and Notes.

Vicky, I write all of this to say that I suspect that the reason you are not
entering all of the required information is because, using the swipe method,
focus is skipping a required field that must be addressed before successfully
completing the submission process. For example, if you are entering a new
credit card, then the 3-digit security code field may be being skipped by
VoiceOver, again, using the swipe method only.

So, try using a combination of both the swipe and the explore-by-touch method
when entering information.

Good Luck,

Mark

Subject: problem resetting account information

I need to make a purchase in the app store, and because my account information
has changed at my bank, I need to reset the information. Everything seems to be
enter correctly, but I keep getting a message that some required information is
missing and it is highlighted in red. So I try again and finally after so many
tries, my session timed out.

Before I try again, is there any great secret to resetting the information?

Thanks.

There seems to be some issues with listening to the games on the mac right now.
I can’t get that to work either, but got every feed of every game to work just
fine today. The only issue is you have to set auto lock to never, or else
you’ve got to keep your screen constantly unlocked.

Ah. If you want your notification sounds to stay at a constant volume and not
change, you're going to want to go into Settings/Soumds and turn off the
setting called Switch with Buttons. It's under the Ringer and Alerts heading.

Thanks,

  Gi, Dave,

Don't reset your phon just yet. If you haven't done so already, add the
volume setting to your rotor.

  Thanks,
  Ari

It sounds like audio ducking is turned off. I had this problem too so when I
found out that my audio ducking was turned off, I turned it back on and my

then when i leave my phone alone for a few minutes, and i unlock it, it will

Re: Looking for an extra battery that includes a lightning connector

2015-09-13 Thread Kathy Brandt
I have a battery on which is written phone nut, but I believe it's from
phonesuit.com. It connects well to my 5S, with the case for it that came from
Apple. I'd say it's just for topping off when you're out, because I believe it
is only 2600 M AH, but has served me well, and is great to put in your purse.

The App Store is usually looking for a valid 16 digit string, plus the three
digit code on the back, make sure the billing addresses match up as well

My Game Pass update

2015-09-13 Thread Wayne Merritt
All,
After trying to listen to audio from some of today's games with Game
Pass and being unable to, I have decided to cancel the free trial. I
have tried several times and have even closed and reopened the NFL
Mobile app with no success, as well as signing out and back in. I
tried to listen on my MacBook Pro with the same results. I didn't
receive a confirmation message via email that my trial had begun so I
am not sure it completely went through. On the upside, I have been
able to listen to many games with the low cost options such as Pro
Football Radio and Media and related apps, so I think that I will save
my money and go with these cheaper options. Each time I signed into
the Game Pass site on the Mac I was taken to a page to update my
account information, and when scrolling through it said that there was
no subscription, which makes me think that my registration did not go
through last night.

For what all that is worth, and your mileage may vary when listening to games.

Wayne

Re: problem resetting account information

2015-09-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Just to be sure there's no misunderstanding, flicking from left to right
or right to left does work on Android. I'm not aware myself that Android
users use explore by touch more than iPhone users, but I know I find it
invaluable on my iPhone as well and not just to find information that I
can't get to with flicking. For example, in the Mail app, I know the
back key is in the upper left hand corner, the previous and next buttons
are in the upper right hand corner and the delete button is right above
the home button.

On 09/13/2015 04:30 PM, M. Taylor wrote:

Thanks.

Try Key+ by Daniel Casady. It analyzes both digital recordings and live audio
