Satellite TV, accessibility

2015-09-15 Thread Joe Quinn
What's better in terms of accessibility of the apps and general overall usage
for blind people? dish, or DirecTV? Thanks! I assume neither has the voice
guidance feature that comcast/Xfinity has?

bluetooth - should it pair automatcially?

2015-09-15 Thread R Van Lant
I have a small Bluetooth speaker and a Bluetooth keyboard. I find I'm not
using them as much because I don't want to have to go into settings and pair
them each time. Even if I have Bluetooth on, I find I have to go into
settings, tap on the item I want in the 'now discoverable" list, and pair
that way. My coworkers today said their phones pair automatically with
their speakers. I'm on an iPhone 4 still running IOS 7 dot something.
Could it be my old phone? Does anyone recall? When I upgrade should I
simply be able to turn on my keyboard and have it pair right away?

Re: WHEN I SET UP MY NEW PHONE

2015-09-15 Thread Gmail
Yes, you need a password for an encrypted backup. I wouldn't use something like
your iCloud or Apple ID password, but I wouldn't be too nervous about whatever
you do end up choosing. I would make it pretty short and easy to remember.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: is the bigger screen on the iphone worth the money?

2015-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
How do you use your current iPhone? I use my 5S with one hand. And for me, the
6S is going to be a stretch. The plus would be impossible. I would no longer be
able to use it with one hand, and that is very important to me. Others may feel
differently.

Re: Absolute Radio

2015-09-15 Thread Flor Lynch
Outside the UK we wouldn’t have access to the Absolute Radio app, as they
believe in restricting access for commercial reasons. However, and it is a bit
hit-or-miss, when you double-tap any of the buttons, does that do anything? Or
is there any other text than ‘button button button’?

Hi friends,

Has anyone tried the Absolute Radio app for accessability?

Apparently you can select from a list oof years e.g. 60’s 70’s 80’s etc in the
top left but I can’t seem to get that to work, VO says button a couple of times
as if there are things there that are not labelled.

RE: is the bigger screen on the iphone worth the money?

2015-09-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Cristobal,

3D Touch is not only a feature of the 6S Plus, the 6S also has it and both the
6S and 6S Plus have the same A9 CPU which now combines the motion co-processor
on the same chip as the main CPU. Yes, of course the 6 Plus or 6S Plus have the
larger battery and as with the 6 and 6 Plus, only the 6S Plus has optical image
stabilization.

Even if you put the screen size aside, you’re talking about having access to a
better battery, camera, processor, responsiveness and in the case of the 6S
Plus, the 3D touch capabilities which for me I find promissing. Not even so
much for its innitial launch, but for what is possible going forward as another
means to interacting with the device and accessing and inputting information.

Even with the 6 Plus, everything above minus the taptic stuff in my opinion
would be worth it if you have the means to purchase it. The battery capacity
alone would make it a buy for me.

When i go in to get them, it says update all dimmed.

and the updates it is showing me, are apps that i have updated recently, in the
last week or so, eg facebook and messenger.

when i look at the 6 apps, it just says open and not download.

When i come back out of the app store and close it down in my app switcher, it
still says there are 6 updates available.

anyone noticed the same problem?

Dave.

I have the same problem with my speaker, Bluetooth headset, Bluetooth
keyboard, and braille display. They all seem to unpair whenever I turn one of

I have an iPhone six and I am running software 8.4. I do not remember this

RE: is the bigger screen on the iphone worth the money?

2015-09-15 Thread Cristóbal
Even if you put the screen size aside, you’re talking about having access to a
better battery, camera, processor, responsiveness and in the case of the 6S
Plus, the 3D touch capabilities which for me I find promissing. Not even so
much for its innitial launch, but for what is possible going forward as another
means to interacting with the device and accessing and inputting information.

Even with the 6 Plus, everything above minus the taptic stuff in my opinion
would be worth it if you have the means to purchase it. The battery capacity
alone would make it a buy for me.

Absolutely. Having had a 6 Plus for a year, I'd never go back to a smaller
phone now. Braille screen input on it is a joy, but the clincher for me is
battery life. A bigger phone means they can put a bigger battery in there, and
I can now do energy-intensive things all day without worrying about being out

Switching between carriers with Sprint branded iPhone 5

2015-09-15 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I’ve got a question that hopefully some on this list have had experience
with and can help me out.

One of my lines is currently using Ting as a Sprint branded iPhone 5. This
phone is owned by me outright and has been internationally unlocked. I’ve
been informed that for whatever reason, Sprint phones cannot be domestically
unlocked.

Anyway, Ting’s been great, but I’ve found that for this particular line, I
need more minutes and data and T-Mobile in this instance can give me a
better deal by jumping on a relative’s plan than simply watching my useage
with Ting.

I’ve been told that older Sprint branded iPhones such as the 5, 5S/C, 4S,
etc. aren’t able to make the switch over to the T-Mobile GSM network even
though the iPhone 5 is both a CDMA and GSM device.

Some T-Mobile folks over the phone and in the store give conflicting
information. The Internet can be just as confusing.

I’m planning on grabbing one of the new 6S Plus phones later this year, but
that is for a different line.

I don’t want to go through the hassle of trying to obtain an older GSM
iPhone 5 or 5C or 5S for that matter and then unloading this 5 just to be
sure that it would work if in fact the one I currently own outright will
work perfectly fine on T-Mobile’s network.

Has anyone in fact moved their Sprint branded iPhone 5 from Sprint or a
Sprint MVNO to T-Mobile successfully?

Needless to say, going forward, I’ll be buying GSM phones from now on.
Especially now that Ting also supports the T-Mobile network, but for now,
I’ve got this issue with the 5.

Thanks,

Re: is the bigger screen on the iphone worth the money?

2015-09-15 Thread Alex Hall
One more point about braille input. The built-in system on iOS, braille screen
input (BSI), has a tabletop mode where you can type with your fingers spread
out on the screen. On the 4, 5, and 5S sizes, this mode forces your fingers
into a sort of v shape which is doable but uncomfortable. On the 6 it's better,
but still not great. On the Plus and iPad screens, your fingers can be much
more normally spread out, making typing far more comfortable and efficient.
I've done this on an iPad, not a Plus, but the experience will be similar. The
Plus is the only kind of iPhone with the screen real estate to handle this.

A larger screen also gives you more room for maps, web content, items in lists,
icons, zoom (if you have low vision), and so on. As a VoiceOver user this may
not matter, but if you use touch exploration a lot, it may help more than you
think. Plus, the larger iPhone can handle landscape mode for apps, letting them
display content similar to an iPad. For example, Mail can have messages on the
left and the selected message on the right in landscape mode, making it
possibly more efficient in that way. Not all apps support this, but many do,
and any can if the developer wants to.

The

iOS 9 is coming tomorrow... don't say you weren't warned!

2015-09-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi List,

I want to respect Cara's recent post about not disclosing information about
beta software and until some time around 10 AM Pacific Time tomorrow iOS 9
is still in Beta.

However, I do feel I should put out a message of warning and caution, so I
will do so without mentioning any specific problems with iOS 9.

I can, however, definitely say that problems exist just as they have with
other new iOS releases and while some seem to be more serious for some
testers than for others, they may very well effect a major function or
functions of your iPhone. I therefore want to suggest that especially people
who don't like surprises or who hate to put up with bugs to wait a few days
before jumping onto this update. In any case, upgrading on launch day can
often be frustrating and slow due to the huge number of people who can't
wait to get the new OS and if you wait a few days you can be more confident
nothing bad will happen. There will of course also be a detailed explanation
on Applevis what bugs exist and how they may or may not effect you. There
may, for example, be serious issues with braille displays, but if you are
not a braille user like me, you probably couldn't care less. Maybe there is
a major problem with Voiceover freezing when making phone calls, but if you
mostly text and rarely call it may not be such a big deal to you whereas for
others it could be a total deal-breaker.

We all know how it is not exactly easy to go back to a previous version of
the OS and at best it is only possible for a fairly short time. Most of us
have heard about what new features iOS 9 brings and some of them are nice,
but believe me that there is nothing you can't live without for a few days
so do yourself a favour and let those who don't listen to what I have to say
upgrade first and then report all that is wrong. Of course there will also
be messages from people like Jonathan and other beta testers who have
battled the bugs for the last 3 months and who have reported them and tried
to tell Apple what needs fixing. But of course just as with iOS 8, Apple has
not acted on all of these reports and significant problems have survived
until launch day and will probably continuew to survive for several more
updates.

If you do feel that you just can't wait, at least do prepare for the upgrade
and maybe take a step or two you have not taken before and which you may
think is unnecessary. Here are the ones I recommend:

1. Go to the App Store on your phone, select the updates tab and make
sure all apps are updated.

2. If you absolutely refuse to use iTunes, make sure you have an
up-to-date iCloud backup. If you don't mind using iTunes, connect your
phone, go to File > Devices and select to "Transfer Purchases" in order to
make sure any updated apps or other items are transferred to your iTunes
library.

3. Once this has finished, again go to File > Devices and select to
"Sync"

4. Once syncing has finished, go back to File > Devices one last time
and select to backup your phone. I highly recommend that you first go to
your device section, tab to the appropriate checkbox on the Summary tab and
check to make an encrypted backup. Enter a password you remember, tab once
and reenter it, then tab to OK. You only have to do this once, any backup
you make after this will be encrypted using the same password you set.

5. Once all this is done, bring up the app switcher and remove/quit
all apps.

6. I highly recommend to next go to Settings > General > Reset and to
select "Reset Network Settings". This will ask for a confirmation and then
reboot your phone. Reset Network Settings often fixes many issues and doing
this before an update may very well prevent you from having issues to begin
with. Remember that after your phone reboots, you have to go to Settings >
WiFi and reconnect to your WiFi and of course if your WiFi is protected by a
password which is most likely the case, make sure you know said password.
Also, if you have changed your iPhone's name in Settings > General > About,
doing a Reset Network Settings will erase this name and replace it with the
default which simply is "iPhone". You can just go ahead and change it back
to whatever you want it to be.

7. Now you are well prepared for the upgrade, once again I recommend
for a major update to a new version of the OS to use iTunes. If your phone
is still connected, all you have to do is go to the device section, tab to
"Check for Updates" and activate it. If iOS 9 has been released, you should
be told that it is available and a few more tabs and presses of the enter
key or spacebar will start the process. You get much more feedback as to
what is currently happening if you upgrade via iTunes. If you don't wish to
do so, you can of course go to Settings > General > Software Updates and do
the over the air upgrade. Make sure, however, that your phone is plugged in
or at least is fully charged.

If everything goes well you

Hi, just taken a look at my iPhone 4s.

It says there are 6 new updates available in the app store.

Dave.

Re: NFL Game Pass update

2015-09-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Technically it's not a price hike. Last season, you could get Audio Pass
or Game Pass. I paid $20 for Audio Pass but others paid more. Game Pass
was I think around $`100, so the price of Game Pass didn't go up. Audio
Pass is now part of Game Pass though, so the $20 to $40 you paid for
Audio Pass last season isn't available any more.

You can get the NFL game pass from iTunes.com for $99.99. Audio Pass last year

what I thought of the price hike from the NFL. Still, it's cheaper then buying
a ticket at the statium.

I am now listening to the live radio stream of the Seattle/St.Louis game
on my Iphone. First I went to the Matchup tab, when I found the game I
wanted to hear, I clicked on Seattle and was taken to a page which let
me select which team I wanted to get the stream from and then on Listen
Now. It is working beautifully at the moment. At half time they are tied

Apple Posts Accessibility Page for TVOS; Details Support for New Apple TV
J.J. Meddaugh Wednesday, 09-Sep-2015 5:26 PM ET

Apple has posted an accessibility overview page for its new TVOS, the
software powering the new Apple TV and many of the standard
accessibility features are included as expected. For new users, press
the Menu button three times to activate VoiceOver. Many of the same
gestures including flicks, taps, and the rotor are included. While the
Zoom magnification feature is enabled, users can double click the Siri
button to speak the focused content and magnify text up to 15X. Bold
text, increased contrast, and reduced motion are also included,
features standard on other Apple products. While closed captions are
specifically noted, there is no mention of audio description on the
accessibility page, though it certainly may be available under
settings or in specific apps. The accessibility shortcut (pressing the
Menu button 3 times) can be enabled to toggle VoiceOver, Zoom,
captions, or other accessibility features though like on other Apple
devices, the shortcut isn't enabled by default. Here's a link to the
TVOS accessibility page.

Apple Watch - bluetooth earpiece and vo

2015-09-15 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I am wondering what bluetooth single earpiece works well with the Apple watch.
I noticed that vo was not very loud when I used the plantronics I have. I
increased the vo volume to 100 using the apple watch app on my phone, because I
don’t have the gesture on the watch itself down yet. In any case, I just
noticed the vo volume coming through the earpiece was not as loud on the
watch as when I use it with the phone.
thanks for any help.

Re: Overcast versus downcast

2015-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
This is the first I ever heard of RSS radio. I just went looking for it on the
app store, but the App Store seems to be having some problems right now. If you
have used this app, and either downcast are overcast, I would be interested in
comparisons and why you think RSS radio is better or worth looking at. The one
thing I don't like about overcast, unless I am missing something, is that you
have to download podcasts in order to listen to them. Since I have a 32 GB
iPhone, which is almost full, this downloading of podcasts is kind of an issue.
I don't want to keep them. I just want to stream them when I want to hear them
and then be done with them. Unlike with books, where I really do prefer normal
speed reading, unless the reader is really slow, I would appreciate to speed up
and cutting out of dead air the downcast offers. Frankly, I love it when a
podcast offers transcript. I can read them in a fraction of the time it takes
to listen to the folks actually talk. And I get the same information.

problem with updates in the app store

2015-09-15 Thread Dave
Hi, just taken a look at my iPhone 4s.

It says there are 6 new updates available in the app store.

Dave.

I should imagine that audio/video description will indeed be available on the

Tim, since you did not post an email address in your message I was unable to

Subject: Old-time Radio listservs

guys, I have a question and I hope everybody doesn’t mind. I apologize for
the cross-posting and I know that for some of these lists this is going to
be way off topic but I wanted to ask and if you want to take clutter off the
lists, please, email or contact me privately off the list so as to avoid
clutter and off topic stuff that might ensue. I have rediscovered and fallen
in love again, with old-time radio. I love listening and finding new
programs and when Bard went down this is what kept me entertained for hours
on top of course, of everything else, chasing a two-year old, (my son) and
other numerous things. Lol. But, I wanted to know if there might be a list
or lists out there devoted to Old-time Radio, programs, and all that type of
thing. I wasn’t sure where to look but I’m curious. If anyone can let me
know, that would be awesome or point me in the direction that would be
great. I started using Vintage Radio, an app in the App store, and I did
their yearly subscription of $19.99 for their whole catalog which is huge
but I can’t ever get enough of this stuff. Lol. I was a member of a list a
long long time ago, but life and things in general at the time had gotten in
the way of getting the cDS back but I don’t know that the mp3 CdS make their
rounds like they did back in the day, but I’m curious. Thanks again guys and
if you know of anywhere to point me in the direction please let me know.
Thanks again and again sorry for the off topic cross posts on some places
but just trying to get an idea here. Thanks again and take care.

I am now listening to the live radio stream of the Seattle/St.Louis game on
my Iphone. First I went to the Matchup tab, when I found the game I wanted to

  E hi Carol,
What I plan to do is to get my old phone exactly how I want it with
the
folders and apps I want on my new phone. Then I will make an encrypted
backup using iTunes. Then, when I get a new phone, I will set that up
using
the encrypted backup from iTunes. This will not do anything for the
music

I
don't think. But it should give me all of my apps and data that are
backed
up and keep my folder structure. So I hope anyway.

One thing I can think of with respect to your new phone and just
downloading the apps you want from the store is that, if you have a lot
of
folders, you won't have those if you use this method. You have to redo
everything. How good are you at that?

Hi all,

I just want to make sure I know the best way to set up things
when I

achieve:

I have a phone already and this will continue to be used mainly
in
playing music, already transferred from my iTunes account. (Some of
this
had been copied from CD's and, although I do have copies elsewhere, I
really
want to ensure iTunes doesn't demolish my music source.

I have lots of apps on my current phone, some of which I will
want
to transfer or at least have on my new phone and some I will not.

In addition, I will want to get all of my music onto the new
phone
also and this will be the same music that is on the older one.

I am thinking of doing this, as follows:
First, I'll backup my current phone, if I can, using iTunes.

When it comes to the new one, I'd rather set up as a new
iPhone,

ensure its name is different to the one I've been using, add it to the
list
of items I use that Apple needs to know about and then download those
apps I
want directly from the Store? Or is there a better way to achieve this
without getting messed up with two different phones, one computer with
iTunes and lots of apps to sort?

When it comes to copying the music, using iTunes and my rather
slow
laptop, will I be safe if I've got different names for each of my
phones,
but they'll share the same account and music?

If anyone can offer some pointers to help me to do this without
too
many hitches, I'd be most grateful.

I dididn't actually think that this worked straight out of the box without
going in to the setting to turn on the treble click option for voice over but I

Hi,
Not sure if it is possible as i have not activated VoiceOver on an iPhone with
that method. Out of the box, you can power on the device and triple click the
home button to toggle on VoiceOver.

One thing I can think of with respect to your new phone and just downloading
the apps you want from the store is that, if you have a lot of folders, you
won't have those if you use this method. You have to redo everything. How good
are you at that?

Hi all,

I just want to make sure I know the best way to set up things when I get my
new phone, so please bear with me while I describe what I want to achieve:

I have a phone already and this will continue to be used mainly in playing
music, already transferred from my iTunes account. (Some of this had been
copied from CD's and, although I do have copies elsewhere, I really want to
ensure iTunes doesn't demolish my music source.

I have lots of apps on my current phone, some of which I will want to
transfer or at least have on my new phone and some I will not.

In addition, I will want to get all of my music onto the new phone also and
this will be the same music that is on the older one.

I am thinking of doing this, as follows:
First, I'll backup my current phone, if I can, using iTunes.

When it comes to the new one, I'd rather set up as a new iPhone, ensure its
name is different to the one I've been using, add it to the list of items I use
that Apple needs to know about and then download those apps I want directly
from the Store? Or is there a better way to achieve this without getting
messed up with two different phones, one computer with iTunes and lots of apps
to sort?

When it comes to copying the music, using iTunes and my rather slow laptop,
will I be safe if I've got different names for each of my phones, but they'll
share the same account and music?

If anyone can offer some pointers to help me to do this without too many
hitches, I'd be most grateful.

Carol P

Re: Overcast versus downcast

2015-09-15 Thread Flor Lynch
Has any of you every tried out RSSRadio? It has a lot of good features, (and
is reasonably accessible; totally once you get the hang of it). It can play
files at up to 2.x, and faster with silence skip enabled. It has some nice
graphic equalisation features, including spoken word, vocal booster, bass,
treble, and a number of music settings.

Overcast.

If I want to take my time and listen to a podcast at normal speed I use
the no frills no thrills basic podcast feature in the apple TV which I

The one advantage I've found with Overcast over Downcast or other
podcasting apps in general is that it can play files at the 3x speed.
Downcast used to be able to do this, but for a while now, once you try to
play something past the 2x speed, the file begins to skip. I've written
the Downcast dev about the skipping issue, but doubt that at this point
it'll ever be addressed.
Other than that, I can't say I'm much of an Overcast fan. There are some
accessibility things I don't like and I find it to be at times sluggish
and limiting. It is true, that Overcast is meant to be a simplified
podcasting app, but I guess I prefer the more detailed settings Downcast
offers.

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions about the overcast app. I see it is
accessible, but I tried to import my unplayed episodews from Downcast
into Overcast. I followed their instructions but in downcast, there is no
option to import into Overcast. There were a ton of other apps, but not
Overcast. I rebooted my phone thinking maybe it wasn't recognizing that
app. Still no luck.

The other question I ha ve is that is the Overcast app any better than
DownCast or is it just a matter of preference? So far, I like both of the
apps.

Thank you so much!

You have to turn off automatic shutoff. I got really tired of that crap real

RE: Turning on voiceover on a new iPhone using iTunes

2015-09-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you restore from an encrypted backup that was done with Voiceover enabled on
the old phone it will also be enabled on your new phone. It is just a setting
which is part of the backup.

Wayback in the dark ages, technologically speaking, when you got a new iPhone,
if you wanted to turn on voiceover, you would connect the phone to the computer
running iTunes and do it there. I haven't done that in a long time, and I
understood from somewhere that this capability is actually absent now Is that
true? I ask because I intend to do a full encrypted backup of my phone to my
mac running on iTunes prior to getting my new phone. Then you're supposed to
immediately connect the phone to The computer running iTunes and commence the
set up there using your computer. That should be easy enough. But at the end,
do you turn voiceover on in iTunes? Or do you take the phone off and tell Siri
to turn it on and hope you're in the right place? Just curious.

Re: NFL Game Pass update

2015-09-15 Thread Alan Paganelli
Hi Robin,

Yes all of it ran through the NFL game pass. Make sure your NFL app is the
latest one. It actually works just like the audio pass worked last year
including that hhokie music they play wile the local radio stations are running
their comertials. I listened to the feed from both sides. The broadcaster
from Greenbey use to be the broadcaster for the Chicago bears years ago. Itt
was nice to just walk around with my iPhone in my shirt pocket. Walked outside
and sat on the swing until it got to hot and came back in the house where the
airconditioning felt good.

Bluetooth earpiece and dictation or using Siri

2015-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
I have an iPhone 5 S with a Plantronics voyager headset. I guess I should call
it an earpiece, since it's just one, not to ear phones. I have had this for a
while, so I know it is not the latest and greatest. I mostly have use this
quite successfully when out in coffee shops or restaurants or other public
places, where I want to read email or articles, or surf the web or whatever.
However, lately, I have actually tried using it for dictation, say, to answer
mail, or to use Siri. And the results have been hideous. It just never works. I
have tried the home button to activate Siri. I have tried double tapping the
dictation button to activate dictation. I think once, I even tried hitting a
button on the earpiece to see if that would work. What usually happens is I get
the two beeps followed almost immediately by the one beep indicating that
dictation or Siri is closed. Sometimes I get a crash. Sometimes the headset
connects and disconnects. And, the audio starts sounding quite strange, rather
like an old telephone connection. It just doesn't work. Am I doing something
wrong? Or is this something that should be fixed if I got a new earpiece and my
new phone which should be here in a couple of weeks?

Re: Bluetooth earpiece and dictation or using Siri

2015-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
Well, I guess I'm glad, because it's not my headset that is the problem. On the
other hand, I'm sorry you are having this problem. I wonder if it will get any
better with iOS 9 and a new phone. It seems to me that there should be a nice
smooth handoff between the headset and the phone, so that you could dictate or
use Siri if you wanted to.

So how did you get your music and apps on the phone in the first place?

Hi Carol:
Another way to accomplish what you are trying to do is to have a
different ICloud account for each phone. This way ITunes will see them
as separate phones. You can then go into ITunes and choose the phone
you want to use. You can tell it to download all your music with one
check box. You can also choose which apps you want on which phone. I
am running two IPhones and three IPads this way. Hope this helps.

Hello Carol,

You're in the best place when it comes to setting up a second phone as
iTunes on your computer will take care of everything.

When you get your new device, simply attach it to your computer. Next,
you

will choose to set it up as a new phone. Next, you will simply move to
the

various tabs on the device, from within iTunes and manually select which
apps, books, and Playlists/music you want on the new device. As long as
each device you attach to iTunes has a different device name, iTunes will
keep their respective settings, separate.

Managing multiple iOS devices is one of the things that iTunes does best.

By the way, it's always a good idea to backup your devices on a regular
basis.

Subject: WHEN I SET UP MY NEW PHONE

Hi all,

I just want to make sure I know the best way to set up things when I get
my

new phone, so please bear with me while I describe what I want to
achieve:

I have a phone already and this will continue to be used mainly in
playing
music, already transferred from my iTunes account. (Some of this had
been
copied from CD's and, although I do have copies elsewhere, I really want
to

ensure iTunes doesn't demolish my music source.

I have lots of apps on my current phone, some of which I will want to
transfer or at least have on my new phone and some I will not.

In addition, I will want to get all of my music onto the new phone also
and

this will be the same music that is on the older one.

I am thinking of doing this, as follows:
First, I'll backup my current phone, if I can, using iTunes.

When it comes to the new one, I'd rather set up as a new iPhone, ensure
its

name is different to the one I've been using, add it to the list of items
I

use that Apple needs to know about and then download those apps I want
directly from the Store? Or is there a better way to achieve this
without

getting messed up with two different phones, one computer with iTunes and
lots of apps to sort?

When it comes to copying the music, using iTunes and my rather slow
laptop,

will I be safe if I've got different names for each of my phones, but
they'll share the same account and music?

If anyone can offer some pointers to help me to do this without too many
hitches, I'd be most grateful.

Re: Google calendar accessibility

2015-09-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I wasn't aware of this app, but I'll be checking it out. Thanks for the
pointer. It does seem perfectly accessible with VoiceOver. It's also
free, so anyone else can check it out at no risk as well.

I don't see easily how you can create a meeting with speech, but since
I've only looked at it for a bit, that doesn't mean it isn't there.

You could always use the native Calendar app and just point it to your
Google Calendar as your default calendar and then you should be able to
do what you want with Siri.

because the Amazon echo now has the capability of linking with the Google

Re: WHEN I SET UP MY NEW PHONE

2015-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
E hi Carol,
What I plan to do is to get my old phone exactly how I want it with the folders
and apps I want on my new phone. Then I will make an encrypted backup using
iTunes. Then, when I get a new phone, I will set that up using the encrypted
backup from iTunes. This will not do anything for the music I don't think. But
it should give me all of my apps and data that are backed up and keep my folder
structure. So I hope anyway.

2015-09-15 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I'm sure the triple-click is on by default for this, though if you haven't put
it on by the time you start setting up, then it will
remain off; so it would then take the other methods to get it on again. In
short, we can set up right out of the box with this.
I remember having to do a lot of flicking to find English to persuade it to
speak English. Once it speaks English, or whatever, and
says "Continue" in your known language, you're good to go.

I dididn't actually think that this worked straight out of the box without
going in to the setting to turn on the treble click
option for voice over but I could be wrong.

Hi,
Not sure if it is possible as i have not activated VoiceOver on an iPhone with
that method. Out of the box, you can power on the

Re: Vo and pop up lists?

2015-09-15 Thread Tom Lange
Hi. I've had this issue, too, and it's really maddening. Seems to me that when
you invoke a pop-up button or picker item, VO should immediately place focus on
it so that you can interact with it. But, my experience has been that I have to
first invoke the pop-up button or picker, move away and try to locate it again
and then once it's in focus I can work with it. This often involves going to
the bottom of the screen, then flicking left until I find the item, working
with it, then double-tapping the Done button that typically accompanies the
pop-up or picker. Needless to say, it's a cumbersome process, and perhaps some
VO expert on the list can offer a more direct way to deal with the issue.
Until then, I'll just muddle through and try to refrain from uttering a few
choice expletives when I encounter the situation.

Hi Carol:
Another way to accomplish what you are trying to do is to have a

Re: Turning on voiceover on a new iPhone using iTunes

If a used device has been reset to factory defaults, this should include the
triple-click feature again.

If your phone is going through setup for the first time then the triple
click of the home button should turn on VoiceOver. If it's been set up
previously then you'll need to set that option first.

folders and apps I want on my new phone. Then I will make an encrypted backup
using iTunes. Then, when I get a new phone, I will set that up using the
encrypted backup from iTunes. This will not do anything for the music I don't

One thing I can think of with respect to your new phone and just
downloading the apps you want from the store is that, if you have a lot of
folders, you won't have those if you use this method. You have to redo
everything. How good are you at that?

RE: Aftershocks headphones?

2015-09-15 Thread Cristóbal
Nice concept, but still needs some refinement. The handsfree microphone aspect
is really a feature in name only. Dictation or giving voicecommands are more
miss than hit and in my experience, trying to conduct a conversation with
someone through them is going to be a poor experience.
The actual sound part with the bone conduction is good, but I've found the
headband to be a tight fit with no means of adjusting them and they're not the
strongest device out there. Mine cracked a few weeks after getting them.
Aftershokz is good about sending a replacement if you register the product for
the warranty, but still...
I fixed my original set with an expired credit card that I cut to size and used
as a brace on each side of the headband and then taped it tightly with some
electrical tape. It's held up well for the past eight months. I sold the
replacement headset Aftershokz sent me on eBay making the end cost to me around
$10.00 after the eBay fees.
The company's coming out with a newer design early next year that is supposedly
going to be stronger and be adjustable for big headed people like myself I
suppose.
I mainly use my Aftershokz headset for working out now. Elyptical, stationary
bike, jumping rope etc. I do like the ability to work out and having
headphones on that won't cover up my ears and get them all hot and sweaty and
the situatioal awareness is indeed nice.
