Apple Music is coming to Sonos on December 15

2015-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sonos fans,

Thought I post the below article from 9to5Mac.com about the soon forthcoming
addition of Apple Music to the already incredibly comprehensive list of
supported music services on Sonos:

http://9to5mac.com/2015/11/30/apple-music-sonos

Article text:

Apple Music streaming is coming to Sonos speakers on December 15th

Zac Hall - 6 days ago

Sonos users rejoice: Apple Music support now has a date, December 15th.
Sonos support for Apple Music fulfills a promise made by Apple in June to
bring the subscription service to the connected speakers by the end of the
year. Opening the Apple Music catalog for subscribers and free trial members
brings a massive collection of content to Sonos speakers.

If you're looking to jump into the Sonos ecosystem, 9to5Toys recently
highlighted an excellent Play:1 Starter Set deal for $349, which includes
two Sonos Play:1 units (reg. $199 each). Sonos also offers a medium-packaged
Play:3 ($299) and a larger, all-new Play:5 ($499, previewed here).

The Sonos speakers already supported a huge library of streaming music
services including Beats Music and Spotify as well as DRM-free local music
on iPhones and Macs, but Apple Music has been unsupported. Trying to stream
or playback a song from the subscription music service serves up a DRM error
message, requiring line-in connections to work which eliminates wireless and
multi-room playback. Starting with a public beta in a couple weeks, Sonos
users will be able to stream anything from the Apple Music collection to
single or multiple connected speakers simultaneously.

Sonos support is also notable because it brings Apple Music closer to
feature parity with Beats Music, which it is based on and replaces. Apple
already delivered on its promise to bring Apple Music to Android, albeit in
beta, as a fall release.

Both moves show Apple is dedicated to bringing Apple Music to as many users
as possible, although it has no plans to support Windows Phone like Beats
Music did (for market-share reasons). Apple Music is also available on the
fourth-gen Apple TV with Siri support in the works on the new set-top box
and subscribers can download tracks locally to Apple Watch for wireless
playback without iPhones.

Sonos recently released Trueplay, a feature for fine-tuning Sonos wireless
speakers for their surroundings to offer the best sound for the room.
Trueplay works with both PLAY:5 speakers as well as all PLAY:1 and PLAY:3
speakers.

Sonos customers interested in trying Apple Music on December 15th ahead of
its general launch in 2016 can sign up here to participate. The release is
timely as Beats Music shuts down today. Because Sonos provides a Controller
app to manage streaming media sources from the cloud to its sources, the
update will not require an iOS update like 9.2 as it will work through the
Sonos app and not Apple's Music app.

Google kills Songza after buying the music service in July 2014

2015-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

Thought I post a link to this article for those who use and like Songza. I
pasted the article's text below followed by the link:

Google to shut down Songza on Jan. 31, migrate listeners to Google Play
Music

By Roger Fingas

Wednesday, December 02, 2015, 02:19 pm PT (05:19 pm ET)

Google will officially shut off Songza at the end of January, leaving a
two-month window for listeners of the streaming service to migrate to Google
Play Music, according to an announcement.

The move is possible because Play Music has been upgraded with Songza's core
features, VentureBeat reported on Wednesday. Contextual playlists were added
in October last year, and free ad-based radio became an option in the U.S.
this past June. With the radio option available in Canada as of today,
Songza's former American and Canadian markets are now covered.

Accounts ported to Play Music should automatically carry over all playlists,
upvoted songs, and stations, the latter including recents and favorites. All
listeners are being notified of the changeover, but will have to opt in to a
Play Music account.

Songza's four co-founders will remain with Google, where they will help
integrate the music streamer's features to all 60 markets Play Music
currently operates in.

Google took over Songza in July 2014. At the time it promised that "no
immediate changes" were planned beyond improving the service.

Competition in the music streaming industry has greatly intensified during
2015. Tidal launched in April, followed by Apple Music in June. Last month,
Pandora acquired Rdio for $75 million.

Hi Teresa,

If you go to the Digit Eyes website there are some very useful tips regarding
where to look for the barcode on certain types of packaging. It’s not possible
to know 100% of the time exactly where they put it, but these guidelines help.

Does anyone know a slick way to locate the bar code?

The problem I run into most of the time is not knowing where the bar code is.
Does anyone know how to figure that out? I start digiteyes, then start turning
the item slowly, around and around and up and down and rarely do I end up
locating the bar code.

I still feel that DigitEyes is the best bar code scanning app.

The thing to remember, is to start with the phone against the item you are
scanning, start the app scanning and then slowly pull the phone back and most
of the time, before you get 8 or 10 inches away it has recognized the bar code.

Of course, I'm assuming you are starting from about the place you think the bar
code is located.

If you just want to go by a picture of the item, rather than bar code, I like
CamFind.

When you have named your playlist and double tap on the add songs button, when
you get to an album title you want to add, simply flick up with one finger and
it will say “add song to playlist.”

Double tap and that entire album is now added to the playlist.

Is it possible that you experience a situation where Voiceover volume drops

in a headset when this happens. Headset volume is separate from speaker volume
and in many cases when this happens and speaker volume drops to 0 headset
volume is still up and you can hear Voiceover just fine as soon as you plug in
a headset.

Alternatively, you can press the home button to display the lock screen,
then do a 2-finger swipe up which starts reading the lock screen and right away
after you do the swipe press the volume up button multiple times. If it is a
volume issue this should start raising the volume to where you can hear it
again.

If it is not a volume issue, then doing a hard reset by pressing the power
button together with the home button for about 8 seconds may get you back up
and running without sighted help.

I also would suggest that you upgrade to the latest version of iOS 9. Even
the 8.4.x series of updates resolved several Voiceover bugs if I remember
correctly. You may of course have your own reason why you continue to run 8.3,
but while there are still bugs, iOS 9.1 now (less than 3 months after the first
release of iOS 9) is in my opinion better than any version of iOS 8 ever was. I
expect 9.2 to be released publically any time now, they pushed out betas for
iOS 9.2 almost once a week and I think 9.2 is now up to Beta 5, but there
hasn’t been a new beta in 2 weeks or so and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw
the public release of 9.2 next week.

Hi all,

Quite a while since i've posted on here but this is due to on-going email
issues on my main PC.

Anyway, I currently use an Iphone 5S and currently ruhning IOS8.3.

Since I bought my phone back in March 2014, I have had occasions when
Voiceover for some reason, stops talking and the only way to get it back is
usually to plug it in and after a time, Voiceover is back to normal. this
hapend recently when at a concert in Liverpool, Voicever wouldn't talk and so
when I got home and plugged it in, it was fine after a few minutes.

A fortnight ago I was staying near Preston and whilst on the train up, I
checked for mesages and had sevearl which I decided to read later on when I
arrived. I locked my phone and then an hour or so later, I decided to read
those mesages, plus send sevearl Emails.

well, Voiceover didn't work and even plugging in didn't make any differenc.

I got a member of hotel staff to come up so they could ring my Iphone to
see if it would activate but when I asked if the phone was on, they said it was
and that it was ready to unlock.

Well I got them to unlock but of course had to get them to enter my pass
code. As the screen looked normal, I got them to go to settings, general,
accessibility and then tap on voiceover.

Once done, Voiceover was back to normal and on checking the tripple tap of
the home keky, that was stil working.

This is the first time i've had to actually switch voicever back on after a
glitch and am somewhat baffled as to how this hapend in the first place.

The other thing is that these sorts of glitches tend to happen, either when
i'm say in work, or out locally or away in another area and so I'm wondering if
there's something in settings which I need to look at and possibly change, so
as to stop such glitches from happening.

any thoughts on the above would be most welcome.

Paul.

re: Apple Pay

2015-12-06 Thread Vicky Collins
I'm wondering if your bank automatically updates that information
for you? My bank, Regions Bank, apparently does according to
their FAQ. I'll quote the pertinent FAQ section below and then
give the link:

What if I receive a new or replacement card?[back to top]
For any cards replaced due to loss, theft or fraud, you will need
to add the card to Apple Pay as if it were new - either using the
device camera or manually adding the card information. When a
card enrolled in Apple Pay expires, you will be sent a physical
card with a new expiration date. We will automatically update
your card information with Apple Pay for you.

Here are some of the scanning tips from the Digit-Eyes web site.

Scanning Tips

Q. Where will I find UPC codes?

A. UPC codes are typically located where humans will not find them. They are
oblong, typically at least one half inch / 1 cm in height and at least three
times as long as they are tall. You will find the bar codes are often located:

on boxes: away from the side that is opened.

on cans with wrapped labels: adjacent to the seam where the labels are joined

on jars with a single label: as far away from the center portion of the label
as possible.

on jars with two labels: on the back label (typically the front label will be
larger and may be more elaborate in shape; back labels are typically smaller
and simpler.)

on packages that are rectangular with small sides: on the longer of the two
small sides.

They will almost always be within 4 inches of the bottom of the object because
that is typically the maximum scan height of a supermarket scanner.

Q. What about soda cans and things that don't have obvious labels?

A. It can be difficult to locate codes on items that are round and that have
continuous wrap labels or where the bar code is part of the printing, as on a
soda can. In this case, it is typically necessary to scan the entire label
surface. We've found it convenient to do this by bracing the bottom of the
phone on a table and putting the can in front of it. When the phone is
scanning, it makes ticking noises. Each time that there is a tick, turn the can
1/4 turn in front of the camera. We have found that it rarely takes all four
turns to get a scan.

Q. Any tricks for scanning UPC / EAN codes?

A. When you are starting out, you should definitely try the practice sheets.
These let you become familiar with the use of the camera.

After getting comfortable with the practice exercises, try a real item and
start with a box. Initially, you will probably find that it is usually easier
to hold the phone steady and turn the item slowly in front of it. One of our
customers reports that he got great results by using a holder from his wife's
plate collection, putting the phone in it and turning the item in front of it.
After you have more a feel for the process, you'll probably want to transition
to holding the phone in your hand, but a hands-free approach can be very useful
when putting the groceries away!

Helpful Hint: If you are having problems with the object, we recommend rotating
it 90 degrees; the bar codes can be scanned from any angle and rotating the
object will cause the autofocus on the camera to reset.

When you have named your playlist and double tap on the add songs button, when
you get to an album title you want to add, simply flick up with one finger and
it will say “add song to playlist.”

Double tap and that entire album is now added to the playlist.

I hope that helps,

Apple cases for iPads

2015-12-06 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi all

Just curious, but what are your thoughts on the Apple cases for iPads? I
ordered one today from the Apple online store via the Apple Store app on my
iPhone 5s. Our current case, significantly cheaper than the one I have ordered,
may be causing VoiceOver issues, from no speech to quitting altogether
requiring reactivation using triple click home. This happens when we open the
case via its magnet. It does not happen all the time, but when it does, it's
sure disconcerting as you can imagine. We had another case before that with no
such issues. But that wasn't one of those "smart" cases. The Apple case for
iPads I have ordered is the smart case for iPad Mini.

Any comments greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you plug it in, lock it and stay connected to wifi, the backup should happen

Re: Fixing iCloud back up?

2015-12-06 Thread Shai
Hi,
I am just guessing here, but have you checked your iCloud storage to
see if you have enough space available?
To do this, go to settings/icloud and see how much space is left.
Another item I might try is to keep the screen uunlocked while you
plug in the phone and perform the backup. It could be that something
is interrupting the backup when the screen is locked.

Hi Alex, if it's following the Apple laptop keyboard tradition, then the
left-hand of those four keys is FN.

bad idea.

I just tested this on my work number where I have to dial in a code to
check my voice mail remotely.

The semicolon does nothing.
I've only ever had luck using commas to put in pauses and having to
experiment to see how many pauses I needed to delay the number entry
until the system is ready for the next set of numbers.

VoiceOver doesn't use the labels referred to in that article.
To get to the extra punctuation, you hit the shift key which is in the
lower left corner of the keypad when editing or adding a number in
contacts.
After you press shift, pause, is the comma, which is in the spot the 4
wold be and semicolon is in the spot wehre the 6 would be. The Star is
where the 7 would be and the pound is where the 9 would be and the plus
is where the 0 would be.
After each comma or whatever you enter, you have to hit shift again to
add another, and so on.

Richard

I haven't done this in a while, and I'm not sure how to test it at the
moment, but there should be a button in the lower left corner of the
screen that will end the wait and dial the remaining numbers. Here's a

If I understand what you're looking for, I think you want a comma to
give you a pause between entering numbers. The more commas the longer
the pause. A semicolon will throw up a dialogue for you to double tap
on when you want to enter the next set of numbers.

Re: voiceover going off

2015-12-06 Thread Arnold Schmidt
When voice over goes off, have you tried the three-finger double tap to see if
it comes back on? If it comes back on and says speech on, somehow, it
interpreted something you did as a three-finger double tap and turned itself
off. You can do this three-finger double tap, on purpose, and it will say
either speech off, or on, depending. The only time I use it now is when I am
wanting to do a voice search in the updated google search app. For whatever
reason, after I say hey google and am asking it something, Voice Over sometimes
says cancel button and confuses google. If I do the three-finger double tap to
turn off voice over before I say hey google, then things are fine.

  Subject: voiceover going off

I got a member of hotel staff to come up so they could ring my Iphone to see
if it would activate but when I asked if the phone was on, they said it was and
that it was ready to unlock.

  Regards

  Paul.

Siri randomly answering my 6s

2015-12-06 Thread Regina Alvarado
Another very strange thing with my 6s running 9.1. When I was reading an email
from someone here and voice-over said thank you reading the email, siri said
"don't mention it." I have seen this happen before but just thought to bring
up. Short of turning off "hey Siri" is there a way to stop Siri from answering
voice over or something like a video that she might think was me?

Sounds like you probably already checked this, but have you made sure
the mute button isn't switched on? I assume it's right above the volume
keys on the iPhone 6, so just make sure it's slid towards the screen.

2015-12-06 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Alex, are you sure it's actually the Escape key you're pressing? Quite a few
of those iPad cases have keyboards that don't include an Escape key, and the
Home key is in its place. If your keyboard has an FN key, sometimes pressing
FN+Home will activate the Back button. If there's no FN key, then I think
you'll need to use the touch screen to activate the Back button.

RE: voiceover going off

2015-12-06 Thread Paul Roberts
Hi Sieghard and thanks for your helpful mesage.

Not sure that the volume was or has been the issue when this problem has
arisen, however your second suggestion sounds worth looking at.

The only reason I never upgrade when the new IOS comes in as there seems to be
so many bugs and I only updated to 8.3, once the initial version 8 bugs had
been ironed out.

I had thought version 9.2 had come out but wil updae I htink within the next
week or so.

Thanks again for your help.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Is it possible that you experience a situation where Voiceover volume drops all
the way down to zero and while you think Voiceover is not running it is in fact
working fine but there is just no volume? One way to check this is to plug in a
headset when this happens. Headset volume is separate from speaker volume and
in many cases when this happens and speaker volume drops to 0 headset volume is
still up and you can hear Voiceover just fine as soon as you plug in a headset.

Alternatively, you can press the home button to display the lock screen, then
do a 2-finger swipe up which starts reading the lock screen and right away
after you do the swipe press the volume up button multiple times. If it is a
volume issue this should start raising the volume to where you can hear it
again.

If it is not a volume issue, then doing a hard reset by pressing the power
button together with the home button for about 8 seconds may get you back up
and running without sighted help.

I also would suggest that you upgrade to the latest version of iOS 9. Even the
8.4.x series of updates resolved several Voiceover bugs if I remember

Since I bought my phone back in March 2014, I have had occasions when Voiceover
for some reason, stops talking and the only way to get it back is usually to
plug it in and after a time, Voiceover is back to normal. this hapend recently
when at a concert in Liverpool, Voicever wouldn't talk and so when I got home
and plugged it in, it was fine after a few minutes.

I got a member of hotel staff to come up so they could ring my Iphone to see if
it would activate but when I asked if the phone was on, they said it was and
that it was ready to unlock.

Well I got them to unlock but of course had to get them to enter my pass code.
As the screen looked normal, I got them to go to settings, general,
accessibility and then tap on voiceover.

Once done, Voiceover was back to normal and on checking the tripple tap of the
home keky, that was stil working.

This is the first time i've had to actually switch voicever back on after a
glitch and am somewhat baffled as to how this hapend in the first place.

The other thing is that these sorts of glitches tend to happen, either when i'm
say in work, or out locally or away in another area and so I'm wondering if
there's something in settings which I need to look at and possibly change, so
as to stop such glitches from happening.

any thoughts on the above would be most welcome.

Regards

Paul.

I actually have had the same problem with my iPhone 6s and 9.1. I have to hold
the home and lock buttons to reset it. Nothing else works. I can't turn my
phone off... pressing the lock button 6 times doesn't work either.

Re: Need tips for first time mac book user

2015-12-06 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

There are two ways of navigating in Safari on the Mac: DOM and Groups. In
Groups mode, you can navigate in all directions and items are grouped into
paragraphs. Unfortunately, since El Capitán, the interaction sound means that
any paragraph containing more than a very few items begins with a horrible
noise. I’ve reported this to Accessibility and they seemed quite shocked by it,
so I hope that means that something will be done to improve the situation
fairly soon. Why they had to add a sound for interacvtion is beyond me.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: Greyhound Bus App?

2015-12-06 Thread Gary Bowers
Fazil asked what is meant by the Continental U.S.

The Continental United States is the area of the United States of America
comprising the 48 states that are south of Canada and north of Mexico (known as
the "lower 48 states") and the state of Alaska.
The Contiguous United States does not include Alaska, the state of Hawaii (as
they are Pacific Ocean islands), or any other territories under the control of
the United States. Some references erroneously mistake the Continental United
States for the Contiguous United States (which consists simply of the lower 48
states).

Alaska is part of the North American continent, meaning it is attached via
Canada. However, Alaska is not part of the contiguous continent, because it is
not attached directly to the lower 48 states.

Note: The above is in my own words. Any resemblance to:
https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_United_States
is purely coincidental.

Thanks much, Sieghard.

Yes, I saw that app too, downloaded it and found out that it is not accessible.
If my memory serves me correctly, the description says

Greyhound US app is for Continental US. Please correct me if I am wrong, my
understanding is that Continental US usually means US, Canada and Mexico, isn’t
it?

Thanks again.

Hi Fazil,

I just did a search for “Greyhound” in the app store and there only seems to be
a Greyhound US app. The description mentions that it gives you the full website
experience, but only for trips that originate in the US and I have no idea
whether it’s accessible.

Not sure if they will have a Canadian Greyhound app at some point, I guess you
will have to contact them and ask.

I actually like Sharon from Acapela a lot. She reads things with so much
expression. Sally's too robotic for me. Speaking of Ivona though, One of my
Twitter followers retweeted a tweet from the official Voice Dream account,
@voicedreamapp, that Ivona will be discontinuing its iOS TTS Christmas Eve of
2016. He doesn't know if users that have purchased the voices previously will
be able to download them again but he doesn't think that it'll be a problem. As
for people that are thinking of getting the voices, better get them now before
it's too late.

2015-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fazil,

Transferring music from your computer to your iPhone has to be done with
i\tunes. First the music must be added to your iTunes music library. You do
this by opening iTunes, then go to the file menu and select “Add folder to
library”. Now browse to the folder where all your music is saved and select it.
Depending on how much music you have, it may take a few seconds or maybe even
up to 10 seconds, then you hear a triple tone which indicates the operation is
complete. The music should now be there in iTunes.

In order to transfer the music to your iPhone, connect it to the computer with
the Lightning cable. Find the “iPhone” button to go to your device section in
iTunes.

Now tab a few times until you get to the treeview which starts with “Summary”.

Arrow down to Music, then tab until you find a checkbox called “Sync Music” and
check it.

Now tab again and select to either “Sync entire library” or select “Sync
selected playlists, genres, artists or albums”. The exact wording maybe
slightly different, but you know what I mean.

If you choose to sync only selected music, you must then tab to the appropriate
listview for whichever way you want to sync, e.g. if you want to sync only
selected artists, tab until you find that listview, you should be able to arrow
down through it and use the spacebar to check the artists you want.

When you are done go to File > Devices > Sync.

Regards,

Sieghard

Thanks much, Sieghard.

In my IPhone5, there were some songs in my music app not lots of them though,
but I am not sure whether they were transferred to IPhone6Plus when the IPhone5
backup was restored to it.

Let me ask you this here if I may, how can I transfer one or more songs to
IPhone from my laptop, please?

Thanks!

You don’t have access to your music folder as such, what is called \”Music” on
the iPhone is the music app which, of course, will show whatever music is
available either via the cloud or what was synced to your phone via iTunes.
Have you ever synced music to your iPhone via iTunes? If so that music should
show up in the music app. Also, any music you purchased from iTunes should show
up and if you subscribe to apple Music or iTunes Match you can see music
available to you in the cloud. Of course you will need an active internet
connection (WiFi or 3G/LTE) to play said music unless it is actually downloaded
to your phone or synced to your phone with itunes in which case no connection
is required.

Hi, list.

I have IOS9.01 with IPhone6Plus. I am not sure of the contents in my
Music-Folder, however when I open it the system goes to status line, showing
WI-FI status, battery status clock-time etc but nothing about music. Is there
something wrong with my music folder?

Thanks!
