Re: Accessible Bible Commentary?

2016-03-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
The newest version is logos 6, it's not accessible on the mac, and somewhat
useable on IOS. The best Bible commentary in my opinion is the People's bible
commentary which is available from the Logos site. Rather than read it using a
program, I prefer to go to biblia.com, click about biblia and choose to switch
to the mobile view of the site. This is very accessible and will allow you to
read books one section at a time.

Hi Sieghard
Unfortunately, the original echo does not have any kind of audio output jacks.

Amazon Echo - any canadian users out there and a question

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

I am just wondering if there are any Canadians on the list who have an
Amazon Echo. If so I'd love to hear about how it is working here since it
doesn't seem to be officially available from Amazon.ca.

My question for any Amazon Echo users, is there a 3.5mm headphone or
line-out jack on the full-size Amazon echo which would allow for connection
to an existing stereo? The new smaller Amazon Dot mentions this
specifically, but I couldn't find this information for the original
full-size model.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Question on the mail app

2016-03-28 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Sieghard, it isn't that I can't do the scrub gesture. I don't have a problem
with it, and in fact use it sometimes when I can't find a back button. It's
just that I really know where that back button is on my phone, since I do so
darn much mail here. And for me it just seems faster to double tap given my
muscle memory then it is to do the scrub gesture. Or so it seems to me anyway.

Re: Looking for an android list

2016-03-28 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yes, I left the eyes-free list a while ago due to the flaming that
occurs on that list and the large number of off topic posts. The
vi-android list is much lower traffic, and although the moderator is
still pretty hands off, it's much more well behaved.

RE: Question on the mail app

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

The back button is perfectly fine, but if I may suggest you practice the scrub
gesture, if you can do it reliably it’s so much easier to back out of a
message, go back a level if you are two or three levels deep in the settings
etc. Many apps support it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is anything
wrong with using the back button, but I find it’s one of those things which
with practice is easy to do and a time-saver.

I also know you have an Amazon Echo, but I’ll post a new message with
appropriate topic for that question.

Take care,

Sieghard

Re: Question on the mail app

2016-03-28 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Richard,

I find it quicker and more efficient for me to open my first email,
decide from the subject if I want to read any of it, then double tap the
Del button when read or if I don't wish to read. Now I'm then listening
to the next item.

In order to start reading, of course, you also need the two-finger flick up.

If I want to come back to a message for any reason, I just tap the next
button, almost at the top right of the screen.

You can of course set the delete to ask, in case you think you're likely
to double tap by mistake, or simply delete if you're happy to do this.

That's how I read my mail, basically.

Ed, I wouldn't find your method very helpful to me but you can do this.
Just hit the back button when you want to return to your list of mail.

I hope this has given you enough help to have a go at our various methods.

What I usually do is read a message, use the two finger scrub gesture
to go back to the list, then go through my emails and if one doesn't
interest me based on the subject, I do the single finger flick up to
delete and double tap to delete that message.

I find it is much faster going through emails that way.
I'm sure there are other time saving tricks out there, but that is
basically what I do.

iOS Native Twitter App Now Supports Moments, Via VoiceOver

2016-03-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am so delighted to let you know that, as of today's update, the iOS native
Twitter app now supports Twitter Moments via VoiceOver. To begin enjoying
this extremely exciting new feature of Twitter, on your iOS device:

1.
Update to the latest version of Twitter.

2.
Select the Moments tab located on the bottom row of the display.

Be certain to explore the entire screen as the Moments area has a slightly
different layout than the rest of the Twitter app.

Also, I am happy to report that every aspect of Moments is accessible via
the app's soft-buttons and by specific VoiceOver gestures including the
3-finger swipe left, to move through a specific thread, and the
single-finger hold, and swipe up gesture, in order to quickly close a thread
and be returned to the main app. Also, Moments video playback works
flawlessly. Just remember that in order to hear the video, you must unmute
the sound via a soft-button located near the upper left corner of the
display.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore this new quick and easy way to stay
up-to-date on what's happening around the world.

Finally, please join me in thanking the developers of Twitter for making
Moments VoiceOver accessible by sending a tweet to either @support or
@twitter, or by sending an email to supp...@twitter.com or by posting a
comment in the app-review area of iTunes.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Mark

Re: Need to Check Status of IOS Update on iPhone

2016-03-28 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
My Mom's in her late sixties and is gun shy re technology. I think she
agreed to the update without understanding what she was doing; she
said she'd charged her phone overnight and when she opened it in the
morning, must've done something and then got the "hello" set-up
screen. She called me asking what to do, and since I'd never seen that
screen before--my husband handles all the back-ups and updates for
me,--I had no idea what to do.

I'll keep the messages you've sent in reply to my question for
reference, and since I have yet to update to 9.3, will make sure to be
an active participant so I understand what's happening onscreen in
case my Mom gets install happy in future.

Thanks,
Dani

I know with my Tisot watch, I’d bounce off walls, and the screen would hit the
wall. or what ever I banged up against. I think the Tisot had saphire.

Yes, there is.

I'm just stopping for tonight as I have an early start tomorrow and will
be away from home for a week.

If, however, nobody comes back to you, feel free to write me around 5th
April and I'll see what I can do to help. It's just rather a long
explanation for this stage tonight.

RE: Accessible Bible Commentary?

2016-03-28 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
Now that is an excellent point and one I had not previously considered. I have
Optasia and a Focus 14 Blue. Optasia has several versions especially formatted
to be read in braille including Greek and Hebrew. I have a 128 GB 6S+ which
includes several browsers as well as Microsoft word. Probably the only thing
holding me back is my beginning Braille skills. I'm still learning. I'm in fact
waiting for Hadley to bring their revised contracted Braille courses back
online to continue my studies. However I had never considered Optasia on the
iPhone before. Thanks for the idea.

I use Logos 3 on my computer. While not everything is useable, I can do
searches and read books. I bought Logos 4 but it was unusable so I haven't
attempted an upgrade from there.

More on topic for this list, I tried the IOS Logos 4 two or three years ago and
couldn't use it. Based on Keith's experience I am going to try again.

One resource I use a lot are the books available from Optasia Ministries. They
are in RTF and HTML formats so I don't know how they could be used on an IOS
device but imagine someone else does.

I had Logos 4 Platinum Edition plus a lot of other books and addins when I had
vision. However, once I lost the ability to effectively see the screen I could
no longer use Logos on my PC. Once Libronix sold out to faithLife they lost
interest in accessibility and even reassigned their accessibility programmer to
a different project so I not only never upgraded to five or six Platinum or
beyond, but I uninstalled it before moving to Windows 10. I literally had about
three thousand resources I could no longer access.

Hi, Ralph. I am running IOS 9.3 on an iphone 6. I downloaded Logos from the app
store and don't remember a version number. But it updates regularly and, though
it takes a bit of working around some things, it is pretty much usable. I have
purchased some books through it and now including free resources, have about
116 books in my Logos library.

I have never found the version on the computer to be very user-friendly with a
screen reader. However, if you ever want to know my work-arounds to make it
usable on the iphone, please feel free to email me offbbist and I will be glad
to help you.

 Hi,

the Apple Watch Sport and the Apple TV 4 are working out fine now that I
have them speaking the same language that I speak.
The Sport works great for me because the price was right since Apple cut
it to $299 and Best Buy had it for $249. And screen size doesn't matter to
me anymore. For now I got just the band that came with it but eventually
would like to get a leather band and have it put on instead.
I really love all the health and fitness oriented things on there and
answering the phone on my wrist never gets old.
 Hope that helps.

RE: how to put audio book on iDevice

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fanus,

Strictly speaking it still uses Internet because of course you are uploading to
Dropbox, but I assume you have some sort of home internet like cable or ADSL
which is what your WiFi network is connected to. Here mostly these type of
connections have either no limit or the limit is so high that most users won’t
reach it like maybe 100 or 200 Gb. The iPhone is really good about not using
cellular data if it is connected to a WiFi.

Sieghard

Do you have a WiFi network at home? If so and you upload to Dropbox when you
are on your WiFi it won’t use any of your cellular data.

My first recommendation is to make sure the file names are sequential so that
the computer sorts them from 1 to 10. Then, zip them into a file with the file
name being the title of the book.

Then, put that zip file on DropBox, and use Voice Dream Reader to import the
file.

What you will end up with, is a book that has 10 chapters and it will always
start where you leave off and you can adjust the playback speed quite easily.

Otherwise, I'd recommend using some other application to convert them into
properly tagged m4b files which iTunes will see as an audio book.

People have recommended applications for that, but I personally don't use that
method.

If you really want a helpful answer, you need to give more information.

What format is the book?

What is the source of the book?

Where do you have it now?

That all would help.

Re: Braille input

2016-03-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
I think you can also set the grade entered in the VoiceOver settings,
under Braille. Note that each time you bring up this screen, you will
probably be given a message about needing to turn on Bluetooth to use
a Braille display. Just hit OK and don't worry about it.

Belt clip case for new iPhone 6S.

2016-03-28 Thread englishrider91
Firstly, I have a few basic requirements, but they seem to be hard to meet
these days. I need the case/clip to be able to do a few things. I'd like the
screen to be able to face out. I'd also like to be able to charge the thone
while it's in the case/clip combo. I often need to charge my current 4S while
out and about (though I suspect this will be less of an issue with the 6S) but
Id still like the ability to charge my iPhone while it's on my belt.

I tried the Supcase Unicorn Beetle Pro, but it didn't fully meet my needs. I
could charge the phone while in the clip, but the case and clip were designed
to only hold the phone with the screen facing in. I tried putting the case in
the clip with the screen facing out, but it was just not meant to do this. The
case started bending in places in which it was never meant to bend. The
OttorBox Defender is also most-likely not an option, given the quality issues
that have plagued the 6 and 6S lines. This is unfortunate, as I've really liked
OtterBox Defender cases in the past.

So, can anyone make any recommendations that meet my requirements? Am I just
dreaming?

Thanks,
Ari

RE: Accessible Bible Commentary?

2016-03-28 Thread rhs

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Phil,

Sorry for my suspicious nature and thanks for also sending me your direct
message, spammers usually wouldn't do that, but your message did seem strange
to me. I wish you good luck with the survey and suggest next time you might
want to contact Cara and/or Mark and ask for their blessing to post something
like this and mention in your email that you have their permission as that
would go a long way to put people at ease. One just can't be careful enough
today what one clicks on, next thing you have some sort of ransomware on your
computer and somebody is asking you to pay $500 to have them unlock it again.

Hi all,
I've posted to this list and other lists many times before, as you can see by
searching in your inbox history.
My university email is pcs2001(at)tc.columbia.edu. I separated the @ sign to
avoid receiving spam myself. If you wish to reach me you can simply replace at
with @ sign. Audible gift card is normal practice as prize, and I added Samsung
tracker and Saks Fifth Avenue to ensure a more representative sample in terms
of gender and device platform both iOS and Android. I created a shorter URL to
make it easier for people to copy but here's full long URL as well.
Shortened survey link is http://goo.gl/kmk0t5 Full survey link is
http://kwiksurveys.com/s/dJmtEKFz Thanks a lot in advance for taking the time
to take my research survey.

I hear the sport screen scratches easy. I bounce off walls at times. LOL.
Prob will come out with next gen in September.

The Sport works great for me because the price was right since Apple cut

Hope that helps.

Do you have a WiFi network at home? If so and you upload to Dropbox when you

People have recommended applications for that, but I personally don't use that
method.

RE: 3-D touch moving apps

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Try it on the home screen with apps like Camera, Phone, App Store, Messages,
Mail or Settings. Just find the app and push down a bit harder on the screen
and a menu will pop up which gives you various quick options depending on the
app.

You can also press down hard somewhere on the very left edge of the screen to
bring up the app switcher, same as a double tap of the home button.

If you really want a helpful answer, you need to give more information.
What format is the book?
What is the source of the book?
Where do you have it now?
That all would help.

Re: Braille input

2016-03-28 Thread Greg Wocher

Hello,
Once you have braille activated a three finger swipe to the left or
right should switch between grade 1 and grade 2 braille. Also once you
have one or the other selected a three finger swipe down will lock the
BSI keyboard so that when you start using it your preferred grade is
what it will use.

firmly pressing on an icon. I really like the 3-D touch.

 Take care,

When you play a game where a bonus roll is available, instead of that

Another Barcode or QRcode Question

2016-03-28 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
It was some topics on barcode readers lately so I found myself
thinking about one thing.
There are more and more QRcode business cards and similar info codes
available on the web, printed flyers and visit cards and stuff like
that.
The objective of those is to make the user point the cammera and
scan the personal, business or other info directly to the phone or
tablet and add it to the address book.
The question is, how this will be possible on iPhone? I'd really
like to be able to scan some QR code and automatically get the
contact card in my Contacts app and just save it to my phonebook.
Obviously, there's no native support for it in the Phone and
Contacts apps so is there any third party solution for this?
Thanks!

Subject: Interval Timer

  Hi!
Regarding my job I'd need an interval timer. To be more
precise, the app would need to have options to settimers
with different length who could alert me in, let's say,
every five minutes.
So, I set the main timer for 60 mins, set the single beep
every five minutes and set some sounds for 15, 30 and 45
minutes so I don't have to look on my watch while doing my
job. I used the Gymboss Timer few years ago for this purpose
but the new version is not accessible as the previous was.
It would also be nice if I could use vibration alerts
instead of beeps and gleeps.
I'd prefer a free app but the price of few bucks is not a
problem.
I Have an idea for workoround with "empty" sound files with
pre-recorded alerts but I'd rather have an dedicated app for
doing this.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Blind low vision survey - win Samsung health tracker, Audible gift cards, Saks Fifth Avenue handbag and more

2016-03-28 Thread Phil
Hi all,
I've posted to this list and other lists many times before, as you can
see by searching in your inbox history.
My university email is pcs2001(at)tc.columbia.edu. I separated the @
sign to avoid receiving spam myself. If you wish to reach me you can
simply replace at with @ sign. Audible gift card is normal practice as
prize, and I added Samsung tracker and Saks Fifth Avenue to ensure a
more representative sample in terms of gender and device platform both
iOS and Android. I created a shorter URL to make it easier for people
to copy but here's full long URL as well.
Shortened survey link is http://goo.gl/kmk0t5
Full survey link is http://kwiksurveys.com/s/dJmtEKFz

Re: how to put audio book on iDevice

Amazon Echo in Canada

2016-03-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

Just wondering if any Canadian list members own an Amazon Echo and how
capable it is here. I was listening to the Cool BlindTech Podcast from CSun
with the guy from Amazon and while I am not heavily invested in the Amazon
ecosystem with music, movies, Kindle or even a prime membership, I am an
avid and daily Audible user and the Echo does intrique me when it comes to
Audible and some other things also. But considering it is not available from
Amazon.ca I wonder how much of what it can do it can do here in Canada. It
really is too bad that Apple who pioneered the digital assistant with SIRI
is fallen so far behind, SIRI should be able to do all the Echo can do and
more. How cool would it be if the new Apple TV had the same capability,
instead of pushing a button on the remote it could be listening just like
the Echo does and accept commands and for when the TV is not on the option
to hook up a speaker could provide output for requests.

Regards,

Sieghard

I got the sport with the smaller screen. I think they call that the 38 mm.
size. The band that comes with it has a very plastic feel but they make a
lot of other bands that can be purchased as well. I am very surprised at
how light this feels. It is so light and fits so snug against my arm I
honestly forget that it is there. Now let's see how long it takes them to
come out with a new generation of Apple Watch since I just got mine.
Laughs!

Which size did you get?

Hi,
I purchased the sport on Friday, two days ago, and so far I am enjoying
it immensely. I am going to need to purchase a book such as Mosen's
Manual for this as well as the Apple TV 4 for my purchases I made Friday
but both the Apple Watch Sport and the Apple TV 4 are working out fine
now that I have them speaking the same language that I speak.
The Sport works great for me because the price was right since Apple cut
it to $299 and Best Buy had it for $249. And screen size doesn't matter
to me anymore. For now I got just the band that came with it but
eventually would like to get a leather band and have it put on instead.
I really love all the health and fitness oriented things on there and
answering the phone on my wrist never gets old.

Hope that helps.
Merv

Hi:
I’m thinking about getting an Apple watch. Do you guys like the 38 MM or
42 MM? Sport version, or stainless steel?
