RE: MODERATOR NOTE: Policy Regarding Posting Sale or Trade Items to the Group

2016-06-23 Thread M. Taylor
Teresa,

Actually, members are welcome to sell items, on-list as long as they contact
either Cara or me, first.

Another option is to contact services such as Gazelle.com at
https://www.gazelle.com

Re: Family Sharing, periodic opt out

2016-06-23 Thread Julian
Hi Tom,

The better thing to do is to add credit to your iTunes account by loading
iTunes gift cards. Once you've done that, any purchases you make will draw on
that balance first before the billing method for the family member who is in
charge of the family share plan.

Someone added me to their family sharing so I can share Apple Music. From
time to time I'd like to purchase or rent movies that I don't want this
family member to pay for. Is there a way to temporarily opt out so I can
make those purchases and then sign back in for Apple Music? Thanks.

There are two ways I could help you out.
1. You could buy me a bot vacuum cleaner, or 2. you could fly me over there.
(Big grin."
Sure, I'll try it out with as many different appliances as I can.
I do not have the need for a bot vacuum cleaner, but I'll check around for
other appliances with different colored lights.
While this isn't an iPhone app, unless Mark says otherwise, once I have tested
it out, I'll be glad to send a note to the list.
Or, I can just write folks directly if that is preferred by Mark, the moderator.
Thanks,
Richard

The app that I have seen mentioned before is called My Way Classic:

Here is a link about it on AppleVis:

Hope this helps,

GPS App works in open area

2016-06-23 Thread Danny Leung
Hello all,

Any one knows a good / reliable GPS app that works in an open area, like
parking lot or in the park?

I have to go through a few parking lots to enter my work’s building. I would
like to use an gps app to help myself to train my new guide dog. I have tried
MyWay lite app as a test, unfortunately, I found it wasn’t able to show me
point 1 to point 2 throughout the rout. Even I have used it to mark down the
rout first. Thus, I am hesitating to spend the money for the full version.

Can anyone give me some idea / advice on this matter?

Thanks!

Danny

Hi, Ruby.
Try looking for the Amazing Slowdowner app. It's VO friendly from what
I remember. Not sure what it costs, but it shouldn't be too expensive.
There may be a Lite version in addition to the full version.

Re: VO and Tripple Click Home Questions

2016-06-23 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
Thanks for the responses re triple click home. I wasn't aware that you
could have none of the items selected. Will try that on my own iPod
and see how it works before I do it on my Mom's iPhone.

My Mom has a bit of a Filipino accent, so Siri sometimes misinterprets
what she says. We tried the Turn VoiceOver off" thing last night, and
the first time she did it, Siri asked "What boys do you want over".
The second time she tried, there was a message saying VoiceOver had
been turned off, but VO sounded like it was still on when Mom hit the
Home button to leave Siri's edit screen. So I'll have to go over
tomorrow to fight with her phone.

Thanks,
Dani

Re: The sort of light detector app I would like!

2016-06-23 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Richard,
Will you give it a thorough workout with every appliance you can find? Will you
come and visit me and my BotVac and try with that? I just need to know about
battery status.now I think about it, there is a toggle button on my Thermomix
and it flashes when it's turned on. So, will it indicate a flashing/pulsing
light?

On the BotVac, there are circular lights around the buttons, indicating
charging: will it see and report on the shape? There is a 3 section battery
status bar, so, 1 green means 3rd charged etc. I wonder how it will deal with
that?

I await your findings with interest!!!

Sandy.

Richard,

Would you be willing to drop a note to the list (or to me privately if
it's too far off topic) once you've tested this device?

Thanks

Re: bug in rev recorder, looking for another recording app.

2016-06-23 Thread Leo Bado
Hi,

I use audio memos pro, it alloows you to record in m4a format when auto
compress option is enable and other great features. It costs about 10 bucks I
think.

Also, there is a free version, but is very poor quality as I remember.

Re: The sort of light detector app I would like!

2016-06-23 Thread Richard Turner

I spoke with the owner of the company this morning as this is a device our
clients would love. When I asked her about LED lights on appliances, she said
"if they are bright."
Her husband is the engineer that designed it for her. She only has light and
dark perception. You touch it to the item you want to know the color of. I
ordered one to try out and show to our clients.
Yes, it is $65, but the reviews say it is much more accurate than the Colorino
which costs three times that much. Also, for those who care about these things,
it is made in the United States.
It has a 1 year warrantee for repairs and a 4 month replacement policy, which
to me, is rather generous for this kind of item. They will also do refunds if
you decide you do not like it in the short term. I didn't ask how long that is,
but most businesses will refund your money if you return it in 30 days.
Later,
Richard

I'm not sure who does do artificial deprecation of hardware, but I am
a bit disappointed that my 4S may no longer be supported. I'm not
sure if there's something in the 4S that Apple no longer wants to code
support for or if it's because they don't want users to get a less
than great experience on an Apple device. It may also be that they
want to save some money by not taking any support questions on the 4S
or by doing any regression testing on it. I'd be willing to try IOS
10 on it to see how it performced if Apple would let me though. I'd
do this even if Apple told me it hadn't been tested and wouldn't be
supported and I was on my own giving it a try.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I had the run I did on my 4S, but I
compare this to my netbook from 2009 that still running the latest
Linux or my laptop from 2011 that's also running the latest Linux but

Final update? For the iPhone 5? All we know is that the iPhone 4s
is due for its "final update" very soon, 9.3.3, before it will be
considered "obsolete". Can't believe it has survived this far.
iPhone 5, however, will have at least one more year of software
support since iOS 10 will run on it and will be the oldest iPhone
to support this upcoming major release.

On the manufacturer's web site it says the following,

"The ability to read bright LEDs means indicators can now be read correctly."

So I'm guessing it may be used to do what Sandy is asking about.

Re: eBook reader

2016-06-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello David,

In Kobo, you need the page transition to be set to None. Then, once you’ve
opened a book, find the bottom righthand corner of the screen which should show
the number of pages in the chapter. Double-tap on this and some other fields
should appear to the left. One of them is Location in book, which really means
location in chapter. Double-tapping the arrow field to the right of this takes
you to the next chapter. Location in book is also where you can advance through
the chapter should you have been interrupted and you want to find where you
were. You swipe upward to advance through the pages, and double-tap to go to
that position. Unfortunately, the position is expressed as a percentage of the
way through the chapter, but having double-tapped on Location in book, the last
field will show the page number in the chapter.
To go back a chapter, double-tap on the arrow field two to the left of Location
in book. I have no idea what the field just to the left of Location in book
does.
To make the toolbar containing iPhone Contents etc disappear, you need to
double-tap twice somewhere in the middle of the screen, and you do the same
thing to make it appear again. Sometimes, I have to turn VoiceOver off to get
this to work.

Just ask me if you have any other questions as Kobo is probably the app I use
most. I have over 400 books in my Kobo library so I have lots of experience
with it.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: VO and Tripple Click Home Questions

2016-06-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, but that is meant for blind users to access something that may not
otherwise work with a typical Voiceover gesture.
It does not allow sighted users to use the phone when Voiceover is running as
if it were not running. The pass-through gesture itself is something sighted
people wouldn't know about and for somebody who is not technically inclined it
would be much easier to tell them to bring up SIRI and ask it to turn Voiceover
off. If the accessibility shortcut is enabled and Donnie's Mom accidently
triple presses the home button and turns on Voiceover then after Voiceover is
turned off using SIRI it would be relatively easy to tell her to tap on
Settings, then General then Accessibility and to then slide a finger up the
screen to scroll down and to tap on the Accessibility Shortcut button to
unselect Voiceover.

Sieghard

You don’t have to do that; there is a bypass gesture. It is the one finger
double tap and hold.

From: Sieghard Weitzel I think it's more the experience Apple wants users to have.
Yes, they
could probably disable features the 4S may have problems with
like,
for example, the face and object recognition on pictures. They
said
that iOS does 11 Billion computations on a single picture and it
is
all done on device so it's not that powerful servers in the
cloud do
the work and just provide the results back to the device. But I
guess
if many of the new and advanced features of iOS 10 would be
disabled

on a 4S there may just not be that much reason to support it.
Considering that the 4S is now 5 years old, I also assume that
as a
percentage of iPhones out there not that many of them are 4S
phones
any more. Anyhow, I guess Apple has to draw the line somewhere,
if
they support the 4S others may say then why not support the 4.
I
actually think it's amazing they have supported the 4S for this
long,
the 4S came with iOS 5 so it was able to run 4 more versions of
iOS
after the one it came out with, show me another mobile phone
that had
this kind of support. Anyhow, iOS 9 is pretty good and people
who
still have a 4S that runs good can still run it with iOS 9 for
years
to come I assume although they may have to replace the battery
since I
doubt that a 4S that was bought in 2011 still holds a charge for
that
long. I have a friend who bought a 3GS in 2009 and he used it
until
he bought a 5S in 2013, so for 4 years, and while he of course
wanted
the newer faster phone, he also said that he only got a few
hours of
use out of the phone at that point. A friend in Germany said
her son

just bought a fairly inexpensive battery kit which came with the
special screwdriver which iks required to open the iPhone and
instructions and he would able to replace the battery on his
iPhone
(can't remember the model) himself, but I would say most people
can't

or would not do this.

Hi,
The rainbow II. Color reader is the most accurate one that I have ever used.
When identifying the color pink most of them say read but this one actually
says pink.

Re: IOS 10-- what's new in accessibility ?

2016-06-23 Thread christopher hallsworth
Yeah, good phone, and I say enjoy the moment while it lasts, because it sure
won’t come back. I personally like my 5s and my next phone will be the SE, kind
of already decided on that as personally prefer the smaller phones than say the
6, 6+ and later. I still have a 4s though, although deactivated it can still be
used on wi-fi, like an iPod Touch 5th Generation in this case. Speaking of
which, I have the 6th generation and like that too. Long live the iOS devices,
I say.

Hi Sandra,
I have an app that is called light detector I purchased it through the App
Store.
There is also something called the rainbow two which is I in Roman numerals
color reader. My husband purchased this for me through Amazon in their
excess ability section.
If this information is not clear or I can be of further assistance please
contact me.

This rainbow to color reader was designed by a blind engineer I believe.

Linux or my laptop from 2011 that's also running the latest Linux but
also able to run Windows 10.

Final update? For the iPhone 5? All we know is that the iPhone 4s
is due for its "final update" very soon, 9.3.3, before it will be

iPhone 5, however, will have at least one more year of software

The sort of light detector app I would like!

2016-06-23 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Hi,

The sort of app I need these days is one that will, reliably, identify
LED/indicator lights on appliances, plus their colour. For example, how many
are lit up, if they are flashing, what colour they are and which would work as
you hover above the lights, so you know which ones are being identified.

Does anyone know of such an app? I have absolutely no success with the
'light indicator" app, if that is what it is called.

I do feel that this should be possible. Afterall, we have colour
identifiers, I used to have one, can't remember, now, what it was called, which
identified the changing lights that I had set up, they were fibre-optics, and
shifted through the spectrum, so it could identify lit up colours. I have not
seen an app which will accurately, detect the number of leds lit up. But it
does all seem, eminently, possible to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Sandy.

Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.

2016-06-23 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Hi,

Yes! Pressing the 'home" button for 15 seconds works for me. Because we
turn our wifi off at night, I do have to do this each morning, to get the Vac
online. If I don't turn the wifi off, then the vac stays connected. Sometimes,
the app reports "off line" eroniously, and it is suggested that you should
close the app from the app switcher and restart it. Plus, remember, it will
depend upon your wifi strength, the vac may take up to 3 minutes to connect.

The main thing is this: we do need sighted help to initially enable wifi,
by way of the menu system on the Bot itself. However, once this is done, it
shouldn't need doing again, if the Bot is off line, then the long, 15 second,
press of the home button will reset it and ti should find the wifi.

To date, the only thing I cannot access with the app is the battery status.
This does show up on the app, but it is an image, with indicator bars, I think.
So, no writing, nothing to VO to read. I tried a screen-shot with KNFB Reader,
but it couldn't do anything with it, as there are no letters or numbers. I have
contacted the Neato support, at the moment, they say it is a Voice-Over issue.
I am trying to talk with their app developers to get them to look at it, but no
success as yet. Perhaps, if others who use this vacuum, could raise the issue
too, we might get somewhere. Not knowing the battery status is not so important
as the vac takes itself back to the dock when it needs to, but, on rare
occasions, I have to put the vac on the dock by hand and I am never sure if it
has engaged properly. So, I would love to be able to check on battery status
and if it is charging.

Apart from this little niggle, I am finding the BotVac to be an excellent
cleaner. Try not to watch it too much, your very presence will affect its
mapping. Best, by far, to let it do its own thing!! Sometimes it seems to be
missing something, as if it has forgotten, but, I find, it does, generally, go
back and complete its task. It is brilliant at returning to the place it
started, even, upstairs, where the dock is not, it returns exactly where I
started it. So, easy to find.

Lastly, often, when I start the app, I may see "off line", but, if I reread
the screen, that status is changed to "ready to clean".

Hope you enjoy your new toy and don't have too many problems!!

Sandy.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the tip. The Kobo app seems to be fairly accessible. Switching
between chapters seems a little bit troublesome though, at least in the book
previews I’ve tried. I seem to have to go back to the table of contents and
choose the next chapter. But I’ve only spent about 30 minutes with the app so
I’ll have to investigate further.

Re: VO and Tripple Click Home Questions

2016-06-23 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Go into settings, general, accessibility, and accessibility shortcuts is
the last one in the list. Unselect voice over

To my knowledge, there is no pass through gesture for letting normal
gestures bypass voice over. You have to turn voice over off to use normal
gestures.

Subject: VO and Tripple Click Home Questions

Hi, Everyone.
I need to turn VO off on my Mom's iPhone. I know that I can do this
with either Settings or Siri.

But I enabled the triple click home shortcut to turn VO on/off for
myself when I need to help her with stuff. (Didn't know at the time I
had the option to use Siri to do that.)

What if I don't want to be able to use triple click home? Can I
disable it? (My Mom isn't the most tech savvy, dexterous iPhone user,
and it's be easiest to not have to try to figure out what she did
inadvertently to make X or Y feature turn on/off.) I mean, the feature
is turned off by default, so is there a way to turn it off once it's
been enabled?

And ... is there a pass-through gesture that lets the VO user use
non-VO gestures while VO is on? I'm thinking that if there is such a
thing, I may be able to talk my Mom through turning VO off without
having her deal with VO gestures.

Thanks,
Dani
