RE: BBC iPlayer has come to the US

2016-07-21 Thread Richard Turner
Mary,
I've listened primarily to BBC World Service for news since Short Wave Radio
days and the last several years via TuneIn Radio.
Just the lack of commercials is reason enough, but they actually spend time on
news.
Radio 4 Extra, which can also be found with TuneIn Radio is great fun with some
of the comedy and drama shows.
I've been hoping BBC iPlayer would come to the States in hopes that we can get
access to some of the audio described shows, so I am going to go find it in the
App store.
Thanks for telling us about it.

Richard

Thank you, Gina. It sounds like your favorite and the classical are the way to
go. There are also some other things, like radio Wales, radio Scotland, radio
ulster, and the sports stuff. But I'm sorry to say I am not into soccer, and I
have no idea about cricket. So I think I'll stick to the music, and maybe play
or some news. Our news media so awful. Maybe yours is better.

Re: Blindsquare and Google Maps

2016-07-21 Thread Deb Lewis
Well the most significant advantage is you would get directions you
could use. BlindSquare will tell you where you are. The other maps
programs assume you can see that and they'll just tell you waht to do.
I like knowing where I am and what's around me while I travel and to
get that you need something like the Seeeing eye GPS or BlindSquare.
It's not enough to just say turn right. So BlindSquare is going to
provide the visual information you need to verify that the information
you get is good and useful.

Hi Eleanor,

Yes, my understanding was that it could be used together with Google Maps or
Apple Maps, but I was wondering what additional advantages I would see from
using Blind Square rather than just Google or Apple maps by themselves?

Blind Square, as far as this newbie can tell, does not offer you

So I also have to wonder what exactly I am getting besides street names

Hi All,

I have mostly been using Google Maps to get walking directions.

Can anyone tell me what advantages I would gain if I purchase Blindsquare
to use in conjunction with Google Maps as opposed to using Google Maps by
itself? I know Blindsquare has been discussed quite a lot on the list,
but I am having trouble figuring out what I would gain by using it along

We will be traveling to the U.K. soon, and we are not at all familiar with

worth purchasing this app.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

RE: Blindsquare and Google Maps

2016-07-21 Thread Chip Orange
I recently purchased Blind Square and am very disappointed. It uses "open
source" map data from Open Street Maps, and is quite inaccurate in my area.
When I wrote to them asking for some way to have a feature where we could offer
map data corrections, or to ask if they could use Google Map data, they told me
they only updated their map data once a year, so giving us a feature to offer
map data corrections would still leave us with map problems for a long time, so
wasn't worth it.
They were unapologetic and unconcerned about the quality of the map data as far
as I could tell.

Blind Square, as far as this newbie can tell, does not offer you directions
either; it relies on your use of Apple maps or Google maps.

So I also have to wonder what exactly I am getting besides street names which
are wrong or missing, and no way to correct them, and map updates only once a
year??? Really??? I had just assumed they would always be using the most up to
date data just like Google maps, so this was a huge disappointment to me.

Bluetooth Keyboard without Quick Nav

2016-07-21 Thread kelby carlson
All,

I normally have quick nav on when using my Anker bluetooth keyboard.
However when I have it off, one of the navigation commands doesn't
seem to work. When I press vo-arrow left, I am able to move back
through the menu/functions of whatever app I am in> But pressing vo
with the right arrow doesn't allow me to move forward. Absolutely
everything else on the keyboard seems to work fine, and I have no
problem at all when quick nav is on. Anyone know what might be
happening? And what situations would you need to not use the quick nav
function with a keyboard?

Re: Reading Kindle While Screen is Locked

2016-07-21 Thread Richard Turner

Have you gotten that to work with Kindle books? I have not. Kindle doesn't show
the status bar, which is where I thought the two finger flick down had to start
from for the read screen command to work.
I switched to converting Kindle books to ePub with Codex for Windows, then
reading them in Voice Dream Reader.

Ok, thanks, just tried again and this 4-finger swipe gesture does indeed work.
Very cool! The problem I had was trying to execute within Mbraille--the gesture
did not execute in this app.

Robert is correct, 4 finger swipe right or left will move between open
applications, I believe you’re thinking of 3 finger swipe left and right to
scroll pages.

Can't answer your first question because I haven't purchased the app
yet, I'm still using the free version which doesn't offer push
notifications. But as far as your second question, while in the app,
double tap in the status bar area and it will take you to the top of
your twitter feed and even refresh content for you. The status bar area
would be where your time and signal stuff is. It's pretty cool how this
works. Android didn't really have anything like this where you could use
it universally in different apps to take you to the top and even refresh.

If you do a search in the App Store for Twitter, you will find dozens

I'm running the public beta of iOS 10.

Of course I won't go into spasifics here, but the update will be very

is, and if no one has said anything about it, perhaps there's nothing
to tell. If it was 9.4 or larger then that would probably be
different. Unless something major or drastic happens, I'm guessing
that 9.3.3 will be the last update to iOS 9 before iOS 10 comes out.
But who knows with Apple.

to tell. If it was 9.4 or larger then that would probably be
different. Unless something major or drastic happens, I'm guessing
that 9.3.3 will be the last update to iOS 9 before iOS 10 comes out.
But who knows with Apple.

does anyone use Voxer

2016-07-21 Thread Gordon
I've been using this app on the Android side for years and am very
disappointed with how they do it on IOS. The update that came out last
week really broke things as far as opening a conversation and being put
in random places in the list instead at the most recent messages where
it should be. Dong the double tap in the status area has no affect here.
So I'm wondering if anyone else uses Voxer and has possibly figured out
an easy way to get to the bottom of the list without having to do the
three finger swipe down a tun of times?

Re: Twitterific: a few questions from a new user

2016-07-21 Thread Gordon
I'll take a stab at answering your first question after thinking about
it for a second. In the free version there is an add that shows at the
top of the screen. Once you move past that you begin to see your twitter
feed. I'm thinking that the push notifications option in your paid
version could be in the place of where our ad is in the free version. I
can't be sure about this, but it could be the case if you see your
twitter feed under that. If that's the case you might have to enable
push notifications to get rid of it.

Second question. How do I get back to the top of my list of tweets? If I've
already read down to let's say 500, how to get back to the newest tweets
without doing a bunch of three-finger swipes?

And finally, is there a good podcast that will give me the Twitterific basics?

Re: Twitterific: a few questions from a new user

2016-07-21 Thread Gordon
Can't answer your first question because I haven't purchased the app
yet, I'm still using the free version which doesn't offer push
notifications. But as far as your second question, while in the app,
double tap in the status bar area and it will take you to the top of
your twitter feed and even refresh content for you. The status bar area
would be where your time and signal stuff is. It's pretty cool how this
works. Android didn't really have anything like this where you could use
it universally in different apps to take you to the top and even refresh.

Re: Any Comments about Latest iOS 9.3.3 Upgrade?

2016-07-21 Thread Dave
I agree. also i had a problem before the new update, with my screen brightness.
normaly i set my brightness to 20 percent, but when i turned of my phone for
any particular reason, it would go upto 47 percent, in other words, it wouldn’t
keep my original setting. The new update seems to have fixed that issue.

I installed the latest version of iOS on Monday evening; it seems to me that it
is a bit more responsive than 9.3.2. However, I am reluctant to put messages
out here proclaiming the positive function ality of iOS upgrade speak cause
there's no way to know if there is a bug you haven't encountered yet. But I
would say on this particular version that it seems to be just fine!

I figure this latest iOS upgrade is minor but I'm sort of surprised I haven't
seen any comments about it on the list. My understanding is that it came out 2
or 3 days ago.

I expect we'd have heard if anyone experienced any problems with it but can
anyone comment on their upgrade experience?

Thanks.

RE: Accessing Apple e-mail from a PC

2016-07-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kim,

1.
Conduct a Google search on how to setup an iCloud email account in Windows and
you will find the correct server settings.

2.
Also, if you login to www.icloud.com, not only can you manage your email
account from there but, you can also find the correct server settings for your
account.

3.
The short answer to your question, however, is that the incoming mail server
address is: imap.mail.me.com
And the outgoing mail server address is: smtp.mail.me.com

Please keep in mind that while these server addresses do work, Apple may now be
recommending iCloud.com server addresses. The thing about email servers is
that most companies have more than one that a person can use, depending upon
the circumstances.

Good luck,

Mark
