Re: Is there a free player for the iPad mini to read audiobooks and other files?

2016-08-01 Thread Carla Savage

hi Terry,
You can add files straight from Dropbox. Once you've added Dropbox in the
settings, go to add on the home screen of Voice Dream Reader. Then, you can
specify where in Dropbox your file is located. I use this feature all the time
and it bookmarks my place in the file beautifully. You can't do this from the
audible app, it's just for downloading audible content.
Hope this helps,
Carla.

2016-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don’t think you can get files from Dropbox to Audible. Anyhow, if you have
Audible content which means you either have or at some point had a
subscription, your best experience will be to use the Audible app which is
after all a free app as well.

I'm not sure about free, but Voice Dream Reader will do all of that and more.
I have not tried adding mp3 files from DropBox to the Audible app, but that
might be a possibility and it is free and would remember where you left off.

RE: Installing OSX on windows as a VM?

2016-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
OK, so I didn't know this, apparently it can be done, but it seems to require
jumping through more hoops than one would have to when installing Windows on a
Mac. Also, the article you provided a link for mentions this:

Before we start, we should tell you that Apple’s licence for OS X expressly
forbids it being installed on anything other than a Mac, so if you choose to do
it, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

I was always under the impression people want a Mac because it's considered to
be better hardware and of course also because of the OS. Therefore I think if
one wants a Mac then why not buy one instead of trying to recreate an
experience which in all likelihood won't be as good.

Sieghard

Hello,
Well, it can be, but, as I don't think I have a different hard drive, unless a
64 GB SD CARD WOULD DO IT,, AND AS I have a 32 bit device, it wouldn't be ever
so successful.

Re: Is there a free player for the iPad mini to read audiobooks and other files?

2016-08-01 Thread Richard Turner

Hi,
Yes. Voice Dream Reader just copies the file from DropBox, it doesn't move them.
In Voice Dream Reader, in settings, Content Sources, double tap on DropBox, and
if this is the first time you will need to enter your Dropbox password, or
maybe just answer yes to enable DropBox, it has been a while since I set it up.
Then, when you are in the main screen, double tap on add, then select Dropbox.
You may have to also then select a folder in Dropbox where your files are, but
when you select an mp3 file, it will download it. Then you can play it like any
book or file.
When you finish and delete it from Voice Dream, it will still be on your
Dropbox.
I hope that helps.
You also should read the help file, and maybe go to AppleVis and search for
podcasts on Voice Dream Reader.
Later,
Richard

Re: Is there a free player for the iPad mini to read audiobooks and other files?

2016-08-01 Thread Richard Turner

I'm not sure about free, but Voice Dream Reader will do all of that and more.
I have not tried adding mp3 files from DropBox to the Audible app, but that
might be a possibility and it is free and would remember where you left off.
Enjoy,
Richard

Well, it can be, but, as I don't think I have a different hard drive, unless a

So, how would one go about installing a 32 bit MacOSX of some kind? I say 32

need other than an image of the MACOSX? And anyone knows where I could hunt off

Re: Ring doorbell app

2016-08-01 Thread Shai
Hello,
I thought that I would let you know that there is a podcast from
February 2016 on AppleVis published by David Woodbridge which
demonstrates how to install the Ring Video Doorbell and work with
their iOS app. For a review, you may want to check it out.
 Hope that helps

While you can install Windows on a Mac, I don't think you can install
the Mac OS on Windows. As for how, refer to some Apple support
articles, AppleVis, or Google.

Re: Seeing entire message on an iPhone

2016-08-01 Thread Chris Chaffin
You have to use the rotor and select what you want to read by; character, word,
or line.
To spell a word out that you do not understand, use characters on the rotor.

Remember once you select what you want to read by on the rotor, just flick down
to read from left to right, and flick up to go back from right to left.

HTH,

Chris

If you are talking about thermostats.com the cheaper unit is for single

I'll have to check out that other thermostat you mentioned. What makes it

Thermostats?

Hi Ari,

You may also want to consider the Wi-Fi thermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com. They are less expensive than the Nest ones and
also work very well.
As for what a thermostat does, it maintains whatever temperature you set
it to and if you have air conditioning this also means starting your air
conditioner when it gets too hot. Let's say you live in a place that gets
pretty hot in the summer and you have air conditioning, but it also may
get cold in the winter requiring you to heat. If you set your thermostat
to 70 Fahrenheit and it is super hot in the summer, the thermostat will
cause your air conditioner to kick in if it gets a degree or two above
670 degrees, once the temperature in the house is back down to around 69
or 70 it will turn off. The same happens with your furnace in the winter.
If you set it to 70 degrees and it's only 40 outside, the thermostat
maintains the 70 degrees by causing the furnace to start up if it gets
too cold.

So, after we move, I'm thinking of getting either one of those
thermostats from talkingthermostats.com or a Nest thermostat. I tried
googling this one, but I don't seem to be getting a proper answer. I
don't really understand how thermostats work. Not mechanically, but
practically. What does setting the temperature of the thermostat to 70
degrees actually mean? And is the answer to that question different when
you're talking about air conditioning versus heating?

Installing OSX on windows as a VM?

Hello,
So, the other topic has inspired me to ask this, but, didn't want to hijack.
So, how would one go about installing a 32 bit MacOSX of some kind? I say 32
bit, as I believe that mywindows 10 laptop is a 32 bit device. What else do I
need other than an image of the MACOSX? And anyone knows where I could hunt off
such a thing? Thanks!

RE: osx on windows computer?

2016-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gianni,

You cannot install any Mac OS on a Windows system. If your computer is getting
slow and you don’t want to buy a new one I suggest you make sure you have all
your data backed up to an external drive and to then reinstall Windows from
scratch. What version of Windows is on that computer now? Do you know how old
it is and what CPU and amount of memory it has? If it is a Windows 7 computer
that is 4 or 5 or even 6 years old you may want to consider putting Windows 10
on it. It is still free to do so even though the official free upgrade offer
from Microsoft has expired on Friday. However, if you use any accessible
technology like a screenreader, Microsoft still allows you to upgrade for free
by going to the following website:

Windows 10 upgrade for assistive technology users
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

Microsoft writes: For the general public, the free upgrade offer for Windows 10
ends on July 29. However, if you use assistive technologies, you can still get
the free upgrade offer even after the general public deadline expires as
Microsoft continues our efforts to improve the Windows 10 experience for people
who use these technologies.

There is also a very informative FS Cast (episode 129) from Jonathan Mosen
which you can find at

http://www.freedomscientific.com/About/FSCast

Tomorrow a significant Windows 10 upgrade will be released, the first
anniversary update, and I can definitely recommend Windows 10 even on older
machines. I am currently using a PC which has a CPU that predates even the
first generation I3/I5/I7 processors. It has a relatively low-end Intel Core 2
Duo CPU, model E7400 at a clockspeed of 2.80GHz with 4 Gb of RAM and it was
one of my PC’s at my store which I replaced, but after reinstalling it with
Windows 10 it’s been running very well for me at home. This processor was first
released in 2008 and I can’t remember if I bought that computer late in 2008 or
in 2009, but it’s at least 6 or 7 years old. I put Windows 10 Professional 64
Bit on it.

Regards,
Sieghard

wasn't able to install Talkback on S7, probably because it is disabled

I wrote a detailed reviewon it for my website but it is unfortunately

From sighted point of view comparing Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6S is just
as comparing Mercedes and BMW.

From partially sighted corner S7 has some advantages since there are
tones of look and feel customizations, zooming accessibility options
and of course, a gallery of visual themes from the Gallaxy Store.

But, talking from the blind perspective, Samsung and Google have a lot
to learn about accessibility from Apple.

just use it without messing with it, iOS still has a definite
advantage. But android accessibility has made lots of strides, less
so if you need braille support and are going to be relying on
braille back. On the other hand, the cost of Apple products is
quite high and out of the reach of many people. So the fact that
android accessibility is improving, and the fact that you can get a
good android device for less than the cost of a comparable iPhone

No, this is one thread on the comparison topic relating iOs and Android.
I'm told, quite often, one can delete threads we don't like.
Bet I'm the one who gets flack for saying so.

Actually, I thought this had come from the Android list.

I thought this was a list for iDevices. All I have seen lately is talk of the
accessibility of Android devices. Isn’t there another
list for this, such as the Eyes Free list?

RE: unable to tweet

2016-08-01 Thread M. Taylor
Hello David,

The email address for Twitter support is supp...@twitter.com

David, have you logged into your Twitter account from a web browser and
composed a tweet from their?

Also, I would suggest that you create a new Twitter account and see how it
works for you as your current account may have been compromised in some way.

One more thing, if you know someone with an iOS device that you trust, attempt
to login to your account on her/his device and compose a tweet.

The idea here is that you must isolate the problem and the best way to do this
is to assume that the issue is something local.

appreciated.

Right.

I was testing Samsung Galaxy S7 for two weeks and I wasn't satisfied
with accessibility solutions. As you probably know, Samsung flagship
models has its own screen reader called Voice Assistant and in some
situations it works worse than the Google Talkback on other phones. I
wasn't able to install Talkback on S7, probably because it is disabled
somewhere so I can't tell how it works on that device.

I wrote a detailed reviewon it for my website but it is unfortunately
in my own language so I'll just sumarize the conclusion part.

It's definitely a lot better than it used to be. Reading Jonathan's
blog article would be a good place to start in my opinion. It is
hard to find truly unbiased people, because everybody has a bias.
They have their own use cases. They have things that are more
important to them. I still say, if you want to buy a device and
just use it without messing with it, iOS still has a definite
advantage. But android accessibility has made lots of strides, less
so if you need braille support and are going to be relying on
braille back. On the other hand, the cost of Apple products is
quite high and out of the reach of many people. So the fact that
android accessibility is improving, and the fact that you can get a
good android device for less than the cost of a comparable iPhone
is a good thing.

And what about upgradability? Not all Android devices support or
have the latest versions and not all can support them which
means that we have even more special questions to ask the
dealers who probably won't know because they are in big chains
and they only sell, they do not know a thing about what they
sell and definitely no blindness specific stuff. At least that's
the way in Sweden now.

Current Android 7 and TalkBack 5 accessibility user experience
matches iOS 10 VoiceOVEr in most areas and exceeds in other areas.
I'll agree that earlier Android accessibility was sub-optimal
