Re: Maximum Apps Per Page

2017-04-29 Thread Mike B.
Hi Marie,

I think I know how to make folders, move apps, & such, but curiosity is what
made me ask about the maximum amount of apps. From what I've read,
depending on the size of your screen, & other criteria, an iPhone can have
as many as close to 50,000 apps! And sure as hell, you know someone is
going to try to max their iPhone out! LOL LOL
Take care.

MapMyWalk tracking and treadmill

2017-04-29 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I use MapMyWalk for when I walking with my wife, but was curious to know if
it can also work while on the treadmill? I know it uses GPS when out and
about, but with the built in iPhone pedometer can it also record activity?
Distance by going off the steps for example? I like MapMyWalk because it
announces when I’ve walked a mile, speed, time splits, etc. Am going to get
a manual treadmill since I don’t feel like paying a premium for all the
visual stuff I can’t use anyway and if possible, would like to keep using
the same app to log my walks.

Alternatively, is there a similar treadmill/walking app that will also
announce distance walked and time? I used to use iTreadmill back in the day,
but never really got the hang of it and it seems to not have been updated in
forever anyway.

Thanks,

RE: Increasing Battery Life

2017-04-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That depends on who you talk to or whose article you read. I still think from
time to time it's a good thing to clear out the app switcher, maybe if you do
it half a dozen times a day it could be more of a negative effect, but to do it
once a day or once every 2 or 3 days in my view has more positive than negative
consequences. Turning on low power mode also really helps, it disables things
like push email, background app refresh and it's a quick and dirty way to get
better battery life without manually changing a bunch of settings.

It is 20 icons, but you can create folders by moving an app on top of

IN the folders, you can have 9 apps per page.
I’m not honestly sure how many pages per folder, but if you had 9 apps in
each folder that would be 180 apps.
One source seems to say you can have 16 apps per folder, but I’m not sure

Re: Siri doesn't seem to work when trying to create a reminder

2017-04-29 Thread Lea W Langley
Hi Chip and everyone else,
Thank you for the help. When I would say 945 to Siri she would always say 940.
That is what I meant when I said she was not announcing the time correctly.
I ended up calling Apple and there was a process that I went through with them
that took a couple of days. We finally got everything working, but it amounted
to turning everything off such as reminders and things like that and then read
resetting everything and turning everything back on. It wasn't Siri at all, it
was the Reminders app itself that had to be re-registered with iCloud
If anyone is interested in the process I have it recorded, and I would be glad
to share it.

God bless,
Wren Langley

RE: Increasing Battery Life

2017-04-29 Thread Mr. Ed
How to check for battery draining and how to fix:

How I added four hours of battery life to my smartphone every day for free By
Jennifer Jolly, Special for USA TODAY, April 9, 2017

Phone constantly dying? Here's how to get back battery life

Columnist Jennifer Jolly describes how to check if emails and apps are draining
your smartphone way too fast and what measures won't help. Jennifer Jolly for
USA TODAY

I've had big-time battery drain issues on my last three iPhones. I just figured
it was my fault - maybe I'm too addicted to apps, take too many photos, or just
use my phone too much?

It's an issue I've gone to Apple for help with many times. But the Genius's
- Apple's retail support - were flummoxed, too. After the typical
troubleshooting: Update iOS? Check. Adjust screen brightness? Check. Use Wi-Fi
when possible, turn off location services, and tone down notifications? Check,
check, and check again. Nothing seems to solve the issues. Maybe I got the
phone wet?

It was time to kick things up to the next level. I enlisted experts like Scotty
Loveless, a former Apple Genius and iOS tech who told me this would not be
another, "turn off every useful feature of iOS posts." because those "really
grind my gears." Finally, someone speaking my language!

With that said, here's how I finally beat the worst of my battery battles - and
now you can, too.

#1 Start with your own battery test

Your battery should only be doing its heavy lifting when you're actually using
your iPhone, and the rest of the time it should be relaxing in standby mode.
Sometimes an app prevents your phone from going into standby and wreaks havoc
on your battery life.

Here's how to test it:

Go into Settings > Battery. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you'll
find two numbers, one for Standby and one for Usage. Your Usage number should
be way, way lower than your Standby number. If it's not, you might have a
problem, and you can confirm it by jotting down your Standby and Usage times
and then clicking the lock button on your phone. Let it sit for about five
minutes and then check the numbers again. If your Standby time is five minutes
higher, you're in good shape, but if your Usage time has bumped up by a more
than a minute it's a sign that your phone isn't resting like it should.

On Android, you can get the same information under Settings > Device > Battery
(or Settings > Battery if you have a newer version of Android). The information
on this menu is essentially the same as it is on an iPhone, and lists "Device
Idle" which is the same as standby mode.

If you find that your phone isn't "resting" when you're not using it, there's
likely a very clear reason, which brings us to #2.

#2 Don't push me

When an app is doing things even when you're not using it, it could be
malfunctioning, and stuck in an endless loop that's draining all your power.
That's what happened to me, with, of all things, one of the email accounts I
had connected to my phone. Loveless picked up on this right away. "This happens
unbelievably often, especially with Exchange push email," he said.
"I knew when you told me your phone typically dies within six hours of being
off the charger, and the Standby and Usage are the same. Sometimes, these times
are not the same because the 'firmware is bad or corrupted,' but this time it's
because push email is keeping the phone from sleeping properly."

The fix was simple.

Go into Settings > Mail > Accounts> Fetch New Data. Mine was automatically set
to Push. Loveless recommended that I set it turn that off temporarily and set
it to Fetch every 15 to 30 minutes instead. You can also use the Manual mode,
which only scans for new messages when you actually open the email app.

You can also tweak the push settings to fetch new emails only every hour or so,
which is also a big help. You don't sacrifice timely email updates either,
though you'll still save the most power by disabling push emails altogether.

On an Android phone, you can manage the push notification settings for any apps
that use it by heading into Settings > Apps and then picking an app and
tweaking its individual settings.

#3 When background apps are the killer

There are other times too when an app is running when you're not using it and
that's called "Background App Refresh." There are lots of reasons apps update
in the background, like the Music app fetching new playlists, Facebook updating
your social feeds, and even Pokemon Go keeping an eye on your steps so you can
hatch eggs. It's all in the name of convenience, but it might also be leaving
you with a dead battery halfway through the afternoon.

To check out which apps are eating up valuable power in the background go to
Settings > Battery and you'll see a list of the apps taking up your battery
life, with the topmost app being the biggest power hog. If you see an app
listed with "Background Activity" below it, that's when you know it's using
power

Re: Increasing Battery Life

2017-04-29 Thread Arnold Schmidt
A few thoughts: When an app is removed from the app switcher, it needs some
battery power to reload its data the next time it is loaded. I agree that some
apps drain power more than others, I generally leave them alone if I think I am
going to use them within, say, an hour or so, or remove them if not. That goes
for all apps if I know I probably won't use them for, the rest of the day.

Other things I do: I don't have mail checking for mail until I turn it on, when
it is going to check again for mail. I have very few notifications turned on,
although that is a personal decision, use them if you need them.

Finally, even if you have brightness set to zero, leaving the screen unlocked
drains battery. Although I have mine set not to lock, I lock it if I don't
need it to be unlocked, even if I am using a program where I can lock it and it
not interfere with my using the program. I have set it to lock after a given
amount of time, but prefer to lock it myself, except when I forget, come back
in a couple hours, and find my battery is down by some double digit percentage.
Oh well.

Re: quite annoyed with bespecular!

2017-04-29 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, I use Bespecuclar almost everyday. I forgot how I signed up but, if
you can get past that.maybe getting some sighted assist, you will be
happy with the rest. For the past 8 months, the average response time is
less than a minute. I usually get about 3 responses and they are all quite
good people. So, what I am saying here that if you need to have someone
help sign up, the rest is happy days. Andy and Shubert
p.s. I love Bespecular so much and believe in it so much that I am doing a
show on our local Access TV with the Lions Club at the end of May.

I have the app but havnt used it yet. When you get to the picker items you
need to press the done button Which is usually on the left of the picker
when you have selected what you want.

Hi all.
First let me appologize for the rant I may go on. lol!

I'm trying to sign up with bespecular, because after all it is an app for
the visually impaired, right? lol. So anyway I can't use the stupid age or
language pickers! Ha! So how is an app that is supposed to help us do so
if it doesn't work with voiceover to even sign up? I'm sorry I'm just
quite annoyed because I need someone to read a lcd display for me.
Ok rant over. Can anyone confirm this issue I'm having? I can't even leave
feedback because the only options I have are to sign up or log in! lol. Go

Thanks for listening.

Re: This just ain't my morning!

2017-04-29 Thread Donna
Jen

The subscription for Aipoly is to sign up for a monthly subscription to Aipoly
which unlocks all the features of the app. The monthly cost is $4.99. Talking
to others who have the app & pay for a monthly subscription, the apps function
is better if the monthly subscription is gotten. Without the monthly
subscription the app isn't as accurate. To sign up for the 1 week trial, tap on
subscription. This is just below the heading Settings & Subscription. It isn't
labeled as a button so it is a bit misleading. I find Camfind & TapTap See
identifies items more accurately when compared to the Free use of Aipoly.

Re: Increasing Battery Life

2017-04-29 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
I find that some apps are real battery hogs and so, once used, I'll best
removed from the app switcher. for example, I was just using a barcode reading
app called NeoReader and found my battery had gone right down really quickly to
10%! KNFB reader is another such battery hog. also, if you're not using them,
why not turn off some of your connectivity, such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi? it is
so easy to turn back on again! finally, I believe, if you have push
notifications turned on, this will drain your battery to. so, it all comes down
to choice. What do you want/need from your phone?

RE: quite annoyed with be specular!

2017-04-29 Thread Mike Ulrich
I agree; Be My Eyes, totally rocks. I do also have Bespecular too. This app has
worked for me great, but I also feel Be My Eyes is better because you end up
with a continuing running active conversation with the volunteer. So no more
retaking of the picture, rerecording of your question, and then resubmitting
it, only to have to wait for another answer if you have to move the camera for
the volunteer to see the product better.

I eventually might have to delete my Bespecular app, but I'll keep it for a
while in order to use both, and see what's the best one. I gotta feeling By My
Eyes is gonna win the shootout!

Jen,
Don't worry about bothering people! recently many of us received emails from Be
My Eyes saying "please use it!" They have too many volunteers who have never
actually received a request for assistance. in order to keep it alive, they
really want us to use it! Plus, the volunteers can choose not to answer… I have
only used it a few times, but every time the person was absolutely delighted to
receive a call. Plus, it is diverted around the globe, so, no matter what time
you use the app, you won't be waking someone up!

go for it! Sandy

I have the app but havnt used it yet. When you get to the picker items you need
to press the done button Which is usually on the left of the picker when you
have selected what you want.

Jen,
It's Sandy again! I find be my eyes is the most useful of all these sighted
assistance apps. you don't have to get a perfect shot for the help to be
helpful. because the app uses the back facing camera in video mode, your
assistant can just say "move it to the left" et cetera and then can read the
screen for you. have you tried it?t
Good luck, Sandy

Jen,
I don't know the answer to the subscription issue, but I would love to know if
you find a Aipoly Vision of any use. I have tried it and find it worse than
useless, positively, misleading! but that might just be me?
Good luck, Sandy

quite annoyed with bespecular!

2017-04-29 Thread Jenifer Barr
Hi all.
First let me appologize for the rant I may go on. lol!

I'm trying to sign up with bespecular, because after all it is an app for the
visually impaired, right? lol. So anyway I can't use the stupid age or language
pickers! Ha! So how is an app that is supposed to help us do so if it doesn't
work with voiceover to even sign up? I'm sorry I'm just quite annoyed because I
need someone to read a lcd display for me.
Ok rant over. Can anyone confirm this issue I'm having? I can't even leave
feedback because the only options I have are to sign up or log in! lol. Go
figure!
Thanks for listening.
