Re: which GPS app should i buy?

2017-07-08 Thread Kelly Pierce
The GPS add on for the Victor Reader will cost more than $300 with $20
map updates if Humanware charges the same as it did for updates to its
previous GPS product. That's a bargain considering the price of
Nearby Explorer, which is under $100. Aph is testing maps outside
North America so those around the world can have this advancement.
All the iPhone GPS apps are able to provide many more points of
interest than what the victor Reader Trek will provide because the GPS
apps can access huge datasets from Google and Foursquare on the
Internet that are updated constantly. The NE app for example can
guide a blind user to the exact location of a bus stop, as the
coordinates of each bus stop have been downloaded to the user's
device. The Trek may have buttons but the iPhone apps have enormous
amounts of rich data to supply to iPhone users. For most people, which
are those who will have a data connection and occasional access to
Wifi, the iPhone experience will likely be more robust and useful.

The new NLS website is currently scheduled to go live this coming Sunday, July 9th.

2017-07-08 Thread Richard Turner

I received this on another list and thought many here would appreciate the
information.

SUBJECT : New website launch

The new NLS website is currently scheduled to go live at the longstanding NLS
URL of
www.loc.gov/nls>

this coming Sunday, July 9th. There will be no
change to the URL for the homepage. Your bookmarks to the longstanding NLS URL
for the homepage will still function correctly and take you to the new site.
The longstanding URL for BARD login will also remain exactly the same. No
changes have been made to BARD or the NLS catalog. The site has also undergone
repeated accessibility and screen reader testing here at NLS and out in the
field.

Please be aware of the following issues and activities during the switchover
period of three days, from Sunday the 9th through Tuesday the
11th.

1. The old website-the one we're all familiar with-will continue to exist
through October (at least) and our patrons can continue to use it while they
gradually become familiar with the new site.

Its URL, however, will change: the old site will no longer be at
www.loc.gov/nls>,
 but rather at
www.loc.gov/nlsold>.
There will be a prominent link on the homepage of the new website-on the
left-hand side, under the box of "Quick Links"-so that patrons can jump back to
the homepage of the old website if they wish to.

If they are on the old site, there will be an equally prominent link so they
can jump to the new site.

2. On the new website, the "Search" field at the right top edge will be
optimized only once the switch of URLs is made on Sunday and Monday. For that
reason, it may be a couple days before it is fully functioning. Patrons can
use built-in navigation on the new site to find what they are looking for
during this brief period. We appreciate your patience during the time required
for the "Search" to become fully optimized for searching the new site.

3. During the same three-day period, for the most visited areas of our
website, we will be embedding new internal URLs and redirected URLs so that
patrons can easily find what they are looking for. Again, we appreciate your
patience as this process is completed.

4. We will be grateful for your feedback about any issues you encounter, or
suggestions you can make. Please send them to
d...@loc.gov>
and
ms...@loc.gov>.
We will log and prioritize those changes we cannot make immediately so that
we can iterate on them continuously in the weeks to come.

For more information contact:

RE: Another question about gps apps

2017-07-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Both the Seeing Eye GPS app and Nearby Explorer will do turn by turn directions
from point A to point B and give you more information along the way. Both are
designed for the blind. Google Maps and Apple Maps work well, but they won't
tell you, for example, if you are coming up to a 4-way or 3-way intersection
etc.

Blind Square is not strictly speaking a GPS app. It does not do turn-by-turn
directions.
But, once you find the point of interest you want, Blind Square can launch
Google maps, Apple Maps, or several paid GPS apps.
If all you want is the turn-by-turn directions, Google Maps does a fine job.

Another question about gps apps

2017-07-08 Thread Lelia
Hi all, so here is a question, I know with google maps you can get
directions say from your place to a store or something like that. Can you
do the same with a GPS app like blindsquare? Say can you get directions from
my house to a point of interest? Is there a GPS app that can do something
like that?

Thanks for any tips you can give.

Gps is also being upgraded, so either system is claiming it will allow us to

ahh ha, but if Galileo lives up to its claims, we should get enough position to
actually take us to a given door! this all comes down to clocks on satellites
and our access to decimal points. Galileo gives us access to many more decimal
points, thus, we can expect much much greater accuracy from it. what's more,
Galileo is up and running and has been since January. it has, already, greatly
improved search and rescue response times. Galileo is the only non-military GPS
system, at the moment. for this reason, restrictions of accuracy do not apply.
so, if anyone can find out more, particularly as to which devices can use it,
do please let us know!

I agree Kelly; I just wish you had the option of using "up to the minute"
online maps when you had a cell data (and if you wanted to spend for the
connection time). MS MapPoint, when I was programming using it, was great for
this ... much like Waze.

BTW, those who are in the know re Humanware Victor Trek say to expect to pay
for map updates.

Chip,

Nearby Explorer for iOS recently updated its maps and they are current
from the first quarter of 2017. That’s impressive considering the
product was introduced in September 2016. Unlike online maps, Nearby
Explorer works great in urban canyons, in valleys with poor cell
service and in lightly populated areas with limited cell phone
coverage.

Andy,

To obtain directions on Nearby Explorer, double tap the search tab on
the bottom of the screen and type or dictate an address. Nearby
Explore will match the address to one it recognizes in its map. The
end user is presented with the option for either a list of directions
or for guided turn-by-turn directions. The app only provides walking
and driving directions though. Public transit directions are
available from Move It, Apple Maps or Google Maps.

Waze uses a really great feature, where they get info from current users of
their app as to what roads they are traveling on and how fast they are moving
(it's called "crowd sourcing"). This is what lets it give you very accurate
expected travel times for any route; it takes into consideration when a road is
blocked for some reason.

I'm coming in a bit late on this thread, but I'd like to first say that I've
been using Nearby Explorer for about six months and really like it. Though its
front screen is quite cluttered, you can hide items that you don't want on
that screen, thereby reducing that clutter.
I live in Los Angeles, and, quite frankly, depending on the time of day,
traffic, especially on the major freeways, is terrible. Having used both
Seeing Eye and Nearby Explorer extensively in vehicle mode, I've noticed that
neither app will give you alternate vehicle routes which factor in bad traffic
conditions. Normally my paratransit service will take me to and from work using
the 405 and 101 freeways, which is fine under favorable conditions. When both
freeways are jammed, I've used Waze to get alternate routes, and, what's cool
is, it will show you route options with their expected travel times and ETA's.
I don't know what algorithms Waze uses, but if they could be plugged into
vehicle modes in Nearby Explorer and/or Seeing Eye, that could be a very nice
feature.
Oh, and one more thing before I'm out of here. For those of you who really want
your phone to be a phone and, if you're contemplating buying a Victor Reader
Stream, check out the 2017 Convention podcast from Blind Bargains, which is all
about the new, soon-to-be-released Victor Reader Trek. I'm considering saving
up my ducats and buying one this fall. It will probably be a very nice device
indeed.

Recently, my card got hacked and I have had to put a new card into the UBER app.

However, when I try to schedule a ride, it shows that my method of payment is
now apple pay.

How can I change that to my visa card?

I went into the payment screen, but found no way to change the default method

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

RE: Tune in radio

2017-07-08 Thread Richard Turner
Have you tried signing in again?
I used TuneIN this morning and it worked fine. Other times, especially after
they do an update, I have to sign in again.
Is your WiFi working OK? I suspect it is if you can get to your favorites, but
something to check.

Richard

It isn't allowing me to play anything.
Now, when I click onto car mode, it only allows me to play my favorites, but

I have a yearly subscription that hasn't even begun to run out. It doesn't end

Any suggestions as to why I am getting this error?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Has any one heard rumors that a new version of Air Pods will be release in 2017?

2017-07-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

Apparently iOS 11 makes it possible to at least set up the Airpods in Settings
so a tap on one speaker acts as Play/Pause and if you tap the other side you
can bring up SIRI.
This is some improvement, and if they could figure out how to do volume changes
without having to use SIRI then the Airpods become much more interesting. It
would appear that some of this may not require a new hardware version of the
Airpods and that much can be done via software. Of course I don’t doubt that
there will be Airpods second generation whether they come out this fall or
during 2018 is anybody’s guess.

Sieghard

Hi,

Has anyone heard rumors about a new version of Air Pods being released in 2017

I have been persuaded by Sieghard that some improvements would be useful, for
controlling more functions without the need for Siri, but also for a safety
mechanism to reduce the risk of loss from falling out of place. But, I do think
I’d like the sound quality and wireless convenience.

Thanks in advance, Keith

RE: Can you jail-break an Apple TV?

2017-07-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Terri,

You can jailbreak older Apple TV's and maybe you can jailbreak the fourth gen,
if you really want to do it just Google "JailbreakingApple TV 4th generation"
and you will find out.
You asked what the benefits would be, in fact, I was going to ask you why you
would want to do this when I first saw your message, but then I read your
question and what I wondered is why you would want to jailbreak if you don't
know if there are benefits or what they are.
One thing I noticed is that on the Today in iOS Podcast as well as on this list
jailbreaking rarely comes up any more, it used to be mentioned a lot, but
probably since iOS 9 and 10 it just seems to be something most people just
don't do any more because of the increased capabilities of iOS. I assume iOS 11
which adds even more customization and now built-in screen recording will take
even more reasons away for jailbreaking.
You seem to be a big TV fan which I am not so maybe that is why you asked, but
without wanting to sound condescending, I would suggest that you seem to be
somebody who does not do well when things change all the time and become
unreliable. I think you pointed this out yourself and that it sometimes takes
you a while to understand how something works etc. In all honesty I don't think
jailbreaking is something you would enjoy, it's an advanced process which may
result in an uncertain outcome, if you jailbreak and then a new Watch OS comes
out which has some really nice features you may not be able to upgrade without
loosing the jailbreak because often whe Apple releases an update it patches
whatever makes jailbreaking possible and then the jailbreak community has to
figure out again how to get around this etc.
The question remains, why do you even want to jailbreak? What do you hope to
gain?

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello everyone,

Over the last few years I have heard people talking about jail-breaking their
iPhones, and I believe, iPods as well.

What I am wondering is, can you possibly jail-break a 4th generation,
Apple TV?

If you can do this, will it possibly take away any of the accessibility
features?

Also, if this can be done, what would be some of the benefits of doing this?

Any thoughts, or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri
