RE: Emergency Contacts - Was Your iPhone could save your life if you learn to use its emergency features, USA Today

2018-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Richard,

Anyone can view your medical ID info by doing the following on your phone:

1.
With the phone being locked, press the Home button. This will prompt the user
for a password since they do not have a Touch ID stored on the device.

2.
On the lower left corner of the display, this will be the same display that is
showing the keypad to enter your PIN, select the Emergency button. Doing this
will cause the DialPad to be displayed.

3.
On the lower left corner of this display, select the Medical ID button. Doing
this will cause your medical information to be displayed.

The Kim Comando article states, "To see your Medical ID: Wake up your phone by
swiping left to right >> tap Medical.

Is this graphical? Do I need to do anything else to show medical information
for emergency responders?

I've followed the instructions in the Health app to include medical

How your iPhone could save your life
By Kim Komando, Special for USA TODAY Updated 10 minutes ago

It's hard to imagine leaving the house without a cell phone. Most of us feel
naked and alone without our phones, disconnected from the world. We feel, in a
word, unsafe.
The truth is, your mobile phone can save your life. Driving in remote places,
cornered by an attacker, pinned beneath machinery, we can use our phones to
reach emergency workers in ways that no other distress signal can.
A smartphone can pinpoint exactly where we are located. We can use photos,
video calls, and digital "pins" to illustrate the situation.
That's why it's vital for you to share the very important information contained
in this article with your family members and friends.
Knowing how to use your phone's safety features is as essential as having a
smoke detector in your home. These tools are powerful in an emergency, but
they're useless if you don't know how they work.
Have Android? Click here for the app you need in an emergency.
For iOS gadgets, Apple has provided built-in emergency SOS and medical data
tools that you can utilize to assist you when the unthinkable happens. Here are
iPhone settings that may just save your life.
How emergency SOS works
Emergency SOS is a feature that will call emergency services and notify your
personal emergency contacts when you need it.
In the U.S., your iPhone will dial 911 and connect you to an operator. After
that call concludes, it will then send a text message to your emergency
contacts (unless you choose to cancel). It will send your current location to
your contacts and also update them when your location changes.
Even if you keep your iPhone's location services turned off, the phone will
automatically turn it back on during Emergency SOS.
How to activate Emergency SOS
Previous versions of the iPhone (7 and earlier) let you start SOS mode by
pressing the side button five times and dragging the bright red slider over to
start the call to 911.
While this action still works, there are additional emergency options for the
iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X.
For Apple's latest phones, press and hold the side button along with one of the
volume buttons until you see the Emergency SOS slider appear on the screen.
Now, you have two options. You can manually move the slider to start the call,
or you can continue to hold down the buttons. If you choose this second route,
the iPhone will start a countdown and then automatically call emergency
services.
This is handy if you're in a situation where you can't afford to look down at
your phone or if you need to dial 911 discreetly.
Tap here to learn how to listen to police scanners in any neighborhood.
If your situation is resolved, you can open the status bar and choose "Stop
sharing emergency location" to end the updates to your contacts. Otherwise, it
will keep running for 24 hours.
You can also halt an emergency call if you accidentally pressed the buttons
down. Just hit the Stop button and then choose "Stop Calling."
How to turn off Auto Call
If you're worried about accidentally setting off Emergency SOS, you can always
disable the Auto Call feature that starts a countdown timer and then
automatically dials 911 when you hold the side and volume buttons down. To do
this, open Settings, select

Have you set up Face Id? If so you have to double click the side button and
authenticate with Face Id. This basically is in place of previously putting
your finger on the home button so it could authenticate with your fingerprint.

That is one small bug, if you have a folder in your dock and the dock is full
with 4 items you can’t add apps to the folder in the dock.
However, I have no problems adding an app from page 1 or 2 to a folder on
another page.

RE: Dropping apps

2018-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
With the new way of moving apps by marking them, then going to the place where
you want them and inserting them before or after the app you are on putting
apps first into the dock really isn’t necessary any more.
You can just flick up or down on an app, double tap to put it in edit mode,
then flick down twice past Delete to “Drag” and double tap. Now go to where you
want the app, you can now switch pages the normal way with a 3-finger swipe
right to left or left to right or you can go to the picker bar between the dock
and the bottom row of apps and flick to the page where you want to be, find the
exact spot where you want the app to go and then flick down until you get to
either insert before whatever app your are on or after whatever app you are on.
Of course you can also create a folder with the app you are on or if you are on
a folder drop the app into that folder.

Emergency Contacts - Was Your iPhone could save your life if you learn to use its emergency features, USA Today

2018-01-06 Thread Richard Petty
The Kim Comando article states, "To see your Medical ID: Wake up your phone by
swiping left to right >> tap Medical.

Is this graphical? Do I need to do anything else to show medical information
for emergency responders?

I've followed the instructions in the Health app to include medical

open up medical information.

Subject: Your iPhone could save your life if you learn to use its emergency
features, USA Today

How your iPhone could save your life
By Kim Komando, Special for USA TODAY Updated 10 minutes ago

It's hard to imagine leaving the house without a cell phone. Most of us feel
naked and alone without our phones, disconnected from the world. We feel, in
a word, unsafe.
The truth is, your mobile phone can save your life. Driving in remote
places, cornered by an attacker, pinned beneath machinery, we can use our
phones to reach emergency workers in ways that no other distress signal can.
A smartphone can pinpoint exactly where we are located. We can use photos,
video calls, and digital "pins" to illustrate the situation.
That's why it's vital for you to share the very important information
contained in this article with your family members and friends.
Here
are iPhone settings that may just save your life.
It will send your current location
to your contacts and also update them when your location changes.
Even if you keep your iPhone's location services turned off, the phone will
automatically turn it back on during Emergency SOS.
How to activate Emergency SOS
Previous versions of the iPhone (7 and earlier) let you start SOS mode by
pressing the side button five times and dragging the bright red slider over
to start the call to 911.
While this action still works, there are additional emergency options for
the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X.
For Apple's latest phones, press and hold the side button along with one of
the volume buttons until you see the Emergency SOS slider appear on the
screen.
Now, you have two options. You can manually move the slider to start the
call, or you can continue to hold down the buttons. If you choose this
second route, the iPhone will start a countdown and then automatically call
emergency services.
This is handy if you're in a situation where you can't afford to look down
at your phone or if you need to dial 911 discreetly.
Tap here to learn how to listen to police scanners in any neighborhood.
If your situation is resolved, you can open the status bar and choose "Stop
sharing emergency location" to end the updates to your contacts. Otherwise,
it will keep running for 24 hours.
You can also halt an emergency call if you accidentally pressed the buttons
down. Just hit the Stop button and then choose "Stop Calling."
How to turn off Auto Call
If you're worried about accidentally setting off Emergency SOS, you can
always disable the Auto Call feature that starts a countdown timer and then
automatically dials 911 when you hold the side and volume buttons down. To
do this, open Settings, select Emergency SOS and then toggle the Auto Call
slider to off. Even if it's set to off, you can still use the SOS feature by
dragging the SOS slider on the screen.
Tap here to learn how America's Emergency Alert System works.
Medical ID
Be sure to also use its Medical ID. This is where you store information that
your doctor needs to know, especially in emergencies. If you have any health
ailments or you're allergic to any medications that emergency responders
need to know, you can store it on your Medical ID.
You can list the medications you're currently taking. You can input your
medical history, weight, height, blood type and more.
Do you ever worry about who will notify your family if you're rushed to the
hospital or you're in an accident? On Medical ID, you can put in the names
of your emergency contacts, their phone numbers, and special instructions to
call them right away.
Here's how to use Apple's Medical ID: Tap on Medical ID >>

Aira question

2018-01-06 Thread Beth G
Hello list,

I just received my glasses and mifi device today. I am able to pair the glasses
with the MiFi and when I open the app it does say my glasses are connected.
However, I have no tabs along the bottom that I am supposed to have such as
usage, more, Home, etc. The only option I see so far is getting started which
instructs me to call using my phone. Is this the only option I will have until
I do call using my phone? Or my missing a step?

Thank you!

Beth

Hello Jeremy,

You know, I have only ever used one Bible app the entire time I've been on iOS.
I use it with my Braille display and it works very nicely. I cannot speak to

text of the Bible, from time-to-time. (smile)

I will paste in the description and the link to the app below my signature.

I used to use mantis bible studies, but sense they upgraded to X, its no longer

I prefer to use the KJV, or the NASB bibles.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Overcast Streaming

2018-01-06 Thread Daniel McGee
In addition to what my previous post said about streaming. I wanted to just add
the following.

If you have overcast set to stream, what will happen is that an episode will
arrive but won't download to your device.

However, if you choose to listen to the episode that has just arrived, it will
then start downloading to your device. This is so that overcast can take
advantage of the smart speed and voice boost features it has. Also, you have
the added benefit of listening to it offline while on the device locally.

Finally, if you have overcast set up to delete episodes when the episode has
finished, it will do so.
To summarized

Episode cunts in but doesn't download.
You start listening to the episode, overcast will store that episode on device.
Finally when finished, overcast will then automatically delete listened
episode. Freeing up that memory on your device.

I hope this all makes further sense now. :)

Thanks

Daniel

braille display again with latest IOS

2018-01-06 Thread regina alvarado
Well, guess I need a braille display. Tried to pair my iPhone 8 plus with my
Apex BT, and though it showed up in my bluetooth devices the message that
showed up was that it was not supported. Is the new AFB braille display
compatible or can someone tell me which would be the best? Am I not going to be
able to use a braille display? Thanks for any help. Appreciated.

Re: iPhone 6S see my Wifi and connects to it; but not to Apple or iCloud, etc.

2018-01-06 Thread Flor Lynch

Hi Mark,

Yes, my first name is Flor.

The problem has been solved today. It was apparently being caused by a VPN
software app that I have, called HMA Pro, repeatedly trying to connect. For
now though, I have forgotten the password to access HMA Pro (which would
allow me set it up on my 6S if I chose). However, Once HMA was disabled, the
6S could connect to any WiFi, and mine, which is also in use by the
household. I knew that the 6S itself was seeing my WiFi and connecting to
it. I can still use HMA Pro on my 5S.

Is your first name Flor?

Based on the scenario you have described, I suggest that you completely
power down your WiFi router for at least 2 minutes. Then, power it back up
and see if that fixes your problem.

It's always a good idea to reboot a router every 2 weeks or so.

Let us know what happens and good luck.

We successfully backed up my data from my 5S to the 6S. When I give my
newly-acquired 6S my iTunes & iCloud password, after a little time, it
returns with: “verification failed. There was an error when trying to
connect to the Apple ID server.” (Niehter my PC nor my iPhone 5S have this
problem. They connect to iTunes, etc.)

Yet, my 6S sees the WiFi and accepts my WiFi password. Resetting Network
Settings on it DID NOT fix the issue. The same tscenarios happened again, as
outlined above. 6S sees mny WiFi but won’t do anything in it. iPhone 5S and
iPhone 6S are both using latest iOS11.2.1.

Anyone have good ideas?

Re: BARD Mobile bookshelf

2018-01-06 Thread pegkane52

After you go to bookshelf and double tap then you have to find audiobooks or
whatever it is you’re trying to delete Weather it’s audio magazines audiobooks
braille books you have to double tap on audiobooks or whatever you were trying
to delete then you double tap on the edit button and then it will give you the
opportunity to delete the book you have to flick up after you find the title or
rather flip to the right after you find the title you are trying to delete and
then top of your screen you will find the done button, and this you do it.

Or if you don’t want to use Face ID you double click the side button then you
hit the install button then enter your Apple ID password.

Hello all,
I called Apple accessibility and got the answer. When you are installing apps
and it says double click to install, you actually double-click the side button.
Then you make sure that your face is recognized if you have Face ID and the
installation goes smoothly.

Re: Dropping apps

2018-01-06 Thread Apple Nerd
Hi,
I think the problem is that the dock is full. Maybe move some apps that you
don't use to a different place then move the apps you want into the doc and see
if that works.

RE: BARD Mobile bookshelf

2018-01-06 Thread Bill Outman
I can’t seem to get the items to delete. I can find the edit button, and it
says double tap to rearrange category. The first thing I want to do is get rid
of a Braille book I down loaded by mistake, since I’m not using Braille right
now. That’s the only item in that category, so the edit button says double tap
to delete item. I can’t seem to get the item to delete when I hit done or by
tapping on the title and trying to flick up. I can’t seem to get the rotor to a
place that would make the flick do such an action.

What am I missing?

Re: Overcast Streaming

2018-01-06 Thread Daniel McGee
Unfortunately, I think this is the way it's suppose to work. In that you don't
want the episode to download but ones you choose an episode to it's gets marked
from stream to download to take advantage of the smart speed and voice boost
features.

For me personally, I quite like the way this behaves. I completely understand
what your saying though. Technically for myself, I wouldn't call that
streaming.

Also, don't forget once you finish the episode it gets auto deleted anyway and
another thing. You can listen to it offline.

Here
are iPhone settings that may just save your life.
Here's how to use Apple's Medical ID: Tap on Medical ID >> Edit. Then, and
this is really important, turn on Show When Locked. That'll ensure first
responders can see your medical information even when your iPhone screen is
locked.
To make an emergency call or to see your Medical ID: Wake up your phone by
swiping left to right >> tap Emergency >> make emergency call or tap Medical
ID to see the medical information you have stored.

Hello all,
I called Apple accessibility and got the answer. When you are installing apps
and it says double click to install, you actually double-click the side button.
Then you make sure that your face is recognized if you have Face ID and the
installation goes smoothly.

RE: iPhone 6S see my Wifi and connects to it; but not to Apple or iCloud, etc.

2018-01-06 Thread M. Taylor
Is your first name Flor?

Based on the scenario you have described, I suggest that you completely power
down your WiFi router for at least 2 minutes. Then, power it back up and see
if that fixes your problem.

It's always a good idea to reboot a router every 2 weeks or so.

Let us know what happens and good luck.

Subject: iPhone 6S see my Wifi and connects to it; but not to Apple or iCloud,
etc.

We successfully backed up my data from my 5S to the 6S. When I give my
newly-acquired 6S my iTunes & iCloud password, after a little time, it returns
with: “verification failed. There was an error when trying to connect to the
Apple ID server.” (Niehter my PC nor my iPhone 5S have this problem. They
connect to iTunes, etc.)

Yet, my 6S sees the WiFi and accepts my WiFi password. Resetting Network
Settings on it DID NOT fix the issue. The same tscenarios happened again, as
outlined above. 6S sees mny WiFi but won’t do anything in it. iPhone 5S and
iPhone 6S are both using latest iOS11.2.1.

Anyone have good ideas?

Overcast Streaming

2018-01-06 Thread kelby carlson
I use Overcast, and have all episodes set to stream. When I play a new episode,
however, that episode seems to download because it shows up as stored when I
check my overcast storage. I would like to actually be able to stream my
episodes but haven't figured out how to keep this from happening. I'm using the
latest version.

BARD Mobile bookshelf

2018-01-06 Thread Bill Outman
Good afternoon.

This morning I found a couple books on BARD while waiting to go home from
shopping and attempted to down load them to my iPhone 5S. I got one of them
down loaded but didn't get the second one moved from my wish list to the
bookshelf. I got an indication there was insufficient storage space and
that the down load was canceled.

I tried to delete a couple items from the bookshelf to create more room. I
could not figure out how I could do this. What is the correct procedure?

I know in the long run I probably need to upgrade the phone, but that's
another project.

I wish I had an iPad here. then I could duplicate the circumstances and try to

btw, you can send a message to youtube tv support and they can call back and

An overcast download question

2018-01-06 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, for those who use the podcast app overcast. Once in a while I noticed
that when you have it set to download rather than stream, why do some podcasts
like to download a backlog of episodes in the feed?

I've always wondered if this was the fault of a podcast or the overcast app
itself.

Thankfully when it happens it is few and far between but once when it did
happen to the applevis podcast. It ended up downloading at least 2GB worth of
data just to give you one example.

Do any podcasters out there have any theory on this? I've tried to ask the
developer about this but got no answer.

Thanks
Daniel

RE: How to keep your phone (and fingers) from freezing this winter, iMore

2018-01-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Touch screen compatible gloves are exactly like any other glove except that in
the fingertips the fabric includes material which conducts electricity. Regular
wool or polyester (which is what fleece or Polartech’s PowerStretch is) does
not so it basically insulates the touch screen from sensing your finger.

Many touch screen gloves only have this fabric in the thumb and index finger
which is what most people use to operate their devices, but some companies do
put it in all 5 fingers and if you use fingers other than your thumb and index
finger then make sure you buy a glove where that is the case.

Icebreaker, a company from New Zealand which manufactures merino wool outdoor
clothing makes merino wool gloves you can use on a touch screen, Mountain
Hardwear, North Face, Patagonia and other brand name outdoor companies make
both thinner gloves which are often used as liners or by themselves when it's
not that cold do as well and they also make thicker insulated Gortex ski gloves
with that technology. These are not necessarily what you want to use if you are
trying to type a lot or do more complex gestures, they are simply designed to
allow you to answer a call, tap the "Take Picture" button or do other stuff
which requires just a few taps here and there.

Dedicated glove companies such as Hestra, Gordini, Watson Gloves and others all
make touch screen compatible gloves these days and of course there dozens more
companies. I know only the better brand names because that is what I sell at my
outdoor/hunting store and personally I’m a huge fan of merino wool gloves
because I think no synthetic keeps you as warm as wool does. My North Face
sales rep once gave me a pair of PowerStretch gloves (made from polyester which
basically means recycled pop bottles) and when I wore them walking home one
night when it was around 0 Fahrenheit especially my left hand which I had to
use to hold on to my dog’s harness, was just about falling off from cold. The
next day I wore my wool gloves and while at those temperatures no relatively
think glove will keep your hands toasty warm, my hands felt much better.

I guess there is a reason why materials which allow animals to survive in cold
climates such as wool or down are as good as they are and that sometimes our
man-made creations just don’t measure up.

Re: A couple of Apple Questions.

2018-01-06 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
hi Malcom,

The very first watch runs pretty slowly with the latest operating system, but I
think all the other ones are fine.

You can arrange all your apps in an alphabetical list and scroll through it
with the digital crown, the round button on the side of the watch. You can also
ask Siri to open apps.

Yes, you can decide which watch faces you want to have access to and which
items are on each face.

Mystic Access has a great Apple Watch audio tutorial, and National Braille
Press will soon release a book on the subject as well. The manual isn't bad,
and AppleVis has some good podcasts.

Best of luck,
Anna

Re: Installing items from the App Store

2018-01-06 Thread Michael Feir
With an iPHONE10, you'd have to look at your phone to use the face id
security system. I don't have one but I understand that during the purchase
process when you need to verify that you're the one making the purchase or
downloading an app, it uses your face rather than a password or touch. I
think you should still be able to use the password and Apple ID if
necessary. Have you looked at the iTunes and App Store settings in the
settings app on the home screen? All of the personal settings are in an
area near the top right after the search field. Just double-tap on your
name to get into that area and you should find all the settings for

the voiceover problem is stillongoing, and I have to switch my phone off as

chip that is supposed to be in iPhone, Ipads and whatever else? Janet
