Accessible video conferencing

2018-01-20 Thread 'ChalmersAS' via VIPhone
Hi all

I must say whenever I have tried Skype I have found it quite tricky, so I will
give Zoom a bash. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I think I like the idea of a 45 minute cut off. It may concentrate some
people’s minds:)

Best

Adrienne

Well, I just checked it out and guess what, it's turned off. So, I turned it on
and then back off again I'll see what happens. Don't think that's it. I think
it has something to do with the lock screen but I'm not sure.

Hello Sarai,

I believe you will need to put your iPhone into DFU mode in order to restore it.

The following is an article on how to do this.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Mark

circle in transitioning its users away from the home button present since the
first iPhone a decade ago. This gives us a window into Apple's design
philosophy moving forward, but it also presents some new problems, especially
when it comes to entering and exiting DFU mode in iTunes.

Even though the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus still sport home buttons, they are
capacitive like the iPhone 7 series and serve no function when they're shut
off. As such, booting all these new iPhones up into DFU mode requires a
different method than us analog-home button holdouts are used to.

Device Firmware Upgrade mode — DFU mode, for short — is a handy way of
restoring an unresponsive iPhone back to its factory settings. Though rarely

But, if you do not care about document layout, then KNFB is faster.
With the Short Text mode, once it starts reading the page, point the camera to
a blank spot on your desk, because the entire point of the short text mode is
to read on the fly, so any movement that focuses on other text, or changes the
focus on the same text, will be treated as a new scan. It isn't really designed
for whole page scanning, that is what the document channel is for.
But, if it doesn't work for you, sticking with KNFB makes perfect sense.

I really don’t find this at all inconvenient. I did have a lock before with a

My mom has a keypad lock like the one you mentioned. It drives me crazy,
because the numbers go from 1-5 along the top row, and 6-0 along the bottom
next row, with some unknown button right underneath the 8. I really wish it had
the numbers in a standard telephone layout, but I'm at their house so rarely

Thanks a million folks for this valuable information.

I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is

I asked my question because I have a tendency to lock myself out often. That
is why I thought of fingerprint or digital lock.

Now, I wonder how hard is it to install these locks. Do I need to hire a
specialist to assemble and install these kinds of locks, or I would be able to
do it myself? When it comes to the regular mechanical locks with keys, I
always change them myself without hiring a Locksmith. I am not sure how hard it
would be to install a digital lock by myself!

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.

I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my

first iPhone a decade ago. This gives us a window into Apple's design

when it comes to entering and exiting DFU mode in iTunes.

Even though the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus still sport home buttons, they are
capacitive like the iPhone 7 series and serve no function when they're shut

Hello Rebecca,

While you ask two very simple questions, the answers are a little more
complicated. This is because the explore-by-touch method works best when using
OverDrive, via VoiceOver.

Rather than attempting to write a lengthy post with what may appear to be a
somewhat ambiguous explanation, I invite you to contact me, off-list, with your
phone number and the best times to contact you and we can go through the
process, together.

As I have stated on several occasions, I am a huge fan of OverDrive, using it
every single day to download and read audiobooks, via VoiceOver. Because of
some video display bleed-through, however, the interface can be confusing to a
new user of the app, via VoiceOver.

Another option is to have a sighted friend explore the app with you as you use
it with VoiceOver.

Hello,

Is the orientation lock no longer available on IOS 11? I recently had to reset
my iPhone 7 plus and, try as I might, I have not been able to locate the
setting for locking the orientation mode to portrait. I do not like my phone
switching from portrait to landscape and back whenever I adjust the phone’s

to read on the fly, so any movement that focuses on other text, or changes the

I can only conclude, then, that it is a difference in the apps.

Seeing AI's short text feature in this case actually worked better than
the document channel, for some reason, but typically still gives garbled
text ap some points and will also stop if you move the camera even a
 milimeter.

So, I think with a few exceptions I'll be sticking with KNFB Reader.

RE: Optimising use of SIRI

2018-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It’s even more strange because we do after all speak the same English and while
there are a lot more dialects in the States, you’d probably be hard pressed to
differentiate between somebody from Seattle or Montana and our canadian
english. Interestingly enough even though I have my region set to Canada, my
language is English Canada and I use English Canada for SIRI, when I dictate
and say words like “Colour”, “humour” or “neighbour” SIRI puts it in the
american way without the “u”.
Even more halarious is the fact that somebody on a list (can’t remember if it
was this one) corrected me once and in not too nice of a way told me I should
learn how to spell. I told him he should mind his own business and maybe
broaden his mind a bit since despite what Trump may say or think, America isn’t
the centre of the world and maybe he should learn the metric system which is
more or less used by the rest of the worl except for America. Of course there
are still many examples where it’s used here as well, especially when it comes
to lumber and carpentry. Nobody goes to the lumber yard and says I want 3
sheets of 121.9 by 243.8 by 1.9 cm of plywood, it’s give me 3 sheets of 4 by 8
by three quarter inch plywood.
Anyhow, it is what it is and I’m sure translation will come to Canada
eventually in Apple’s own time.

Heck, if Google translate can do it, Apple should be able to handle it.
In fact, maybe all of us should write Apple.

Here is some suggested uses and instructions for Siri commands:

How to Use Siri

To use Hey Siri, open settings, arrow down to Siri & Search, enable Listen for
"Hey Siri" and follow directions on the screen. After Siri learns the sound of
your voice, to activate Siri without touching the phone, just say, "Hey Siri"
and give your command or question. (The phone does not have to be plugged in
if it is a 6S or newer to use Hey Siri.)

To use Siri when touching the home button, open settings, arrow down to Siri
and Search, enable Press Home for Siri. Then hold down the home button to
activate Siri. Continue holding the home button until you finish saying your
command or question. Let go of the home button and Siri will respond.

Things you can do with Siri

If you want to use VoiceOver, ask Siri to turn on or turn off VoiceOver.

Ask Siri to call someone in your contacts: "Siri, call Sam Jones." If you have
more than one phone number, Siri will ask which number you want to use.

Ask Siri to call a business: "Siri, call Rite Aid Pharmacy."

Ask Siri to play your voice mail.

Ask Siri to make a call on speaker phone.

Ask Siri to send a text message. Say, "Siri, send a text message to John."
Then Siri will ask, "What do you want to say?" Answer, "call me at 6:00 pm."
Then Siri will read back the text and ask are you ready to send it? Say "Yes."

Ask Siri to read text messages. You can ask to have my last text message read
or read my unread text messages or read my text message from Sally.

Ask Siri to send an Email to someone. Say, "Siri, send an email to Sue Jones."
Siri will ask, "What do you want to say?" Dictate your message being careful
not to pause until you have finished the entire message. Then Siri will read
back the text and ask are you ready to send it? Say "Yes" or "No."

Ask Siri to read Emails. Siri can read the unread emails, last email, or from
a particular sender.

Ask Siri to create a calendar appointment. Say, "Schedule an appointment
titled Dr. Smith for January 6 at 2:00 pm." Siri will read back the
appointment info and will ask if you want to schedule it; if you say, "yes,"
the appointment will appear on your calendar. If you say "No," Siri will give
you options to cancel or change parts of the appointment.

Ask Siri what appointments you have scheduled for a particular day or week.

Ask Siri to

My mom has a keypad lock like the one you mentioned. It drives me crazy,
because the numbers go from 1-5 along the top row, and 6-0 along the bottom
next row, with some unknown button right underneath the 8. I really wish it had
the numbers in a standard telephone layout, but I'm at their house so rarely

like to find one with the numbers in the standard telephone layout.

Thanks a million folks for this valuable information.
I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is
simply not needed in my area.
Cheers,
Cris

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.
I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

We have a Yale key pad lock on our door that was provided by our security

find out more how to use it. I don't want to have to asks the installer every
time I want to set another code for someone. I also want to know if they have
an app so we don't have to wade through Alarm.com to try to

I think all of you who live in Canada ought to be writing to Apple about the

speak so many languages.

Ask Siri to create a note. The first line of a note will be the title of that
note. While dictating a note, speak the punctuation you want to use and if you
want to make a list, say "new line."

Ask Siri to search notes.

Ask Siri to remind me to do something---example, take medicine at 7:00 am, take
garbage out on Wednesday.
Remind me to call my daughter every Friday. Remind me to pay my bills on the
first of the month.

Set reminders for locations: "When I get home, remind me to take out the trash."

Ask Siri to create any kind of list, such as a To Do List or a grocery list.
You can add additional items to the list by asking Siri to "add eggs to my
grocery list."

You can ask Siri to read the list.

Ask Siri to set an Alarm. "Siri, set an alarm for 7:30 am." To stop the alarm
from sounding press the power button or the home button.

Ask Siri to set a Timer. "Siri, set a timer for 15 minutes."

Ask Siri to cancel alarms or timers.

Ask Siri to get an Uber or Lyft ride, if you have the application installed on
your device and you have an account.

Ask Siri to play music on your device, such as "Play the album Sergeant
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Or, "Play the artist The Beatles." Or,
"play Classical music on my device."

Ask Siri for sports scores.

Ask Siri to search Google for anything. The default search engine is Bing, if
you want to use Google, ask Siri, "Search Google for the price of tea in China."

Ask Siri to open any app on your device.

RE: Edit Mode

2018-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Wayne,

How can you accidently delete an app this way? Even if you accidently flicked
up or down and set the rotor to editing and you double tap, you then have 6
more flicks and double taps to perform to actually delete an app, at best you
have to do 4 gestures if you replace the 3 flicks I listed in steps 3, 4 and 5
with a single 4-finger tap:

1. After you activate editing mode you have to flick down to Delete.
2. You have to double tap delete, then you get the prompt "Delete so and so
app?"
3, 4 and 5. You have to flick 3 times to the Delete button, I guess if you did
a 4-finger double tap near the bottom you could get there with one gesture.
6. You now have to double tap the Delete button and only then the app will be
deleted.

Hello Reg. In iOS 11 you can opt to have the edit mode turned on or off with
VoiceOver. If it is on, then you just have to flick up/down on an app or folder
on a home screen and VoiceOver will announce editing. If the option is turned
off, then you will have to double tap and hold to turn on editing mode. Like
Sieghard, I'm glad they removed the extra verbage from the announcement we got
in iOS 10 when on the home screen. I did like this new thing with the ability
to turn the feature on or off depending on how you wanted things to operate.
Until that is I accidentally flicked ever so slightly on my home screens and
heard VoiceOver announce "editing", and then I quickly flicked up or down again
to go back to the default selection mode. To turn this feature on or off, go to
the VoiceOver settings, which is settings/general/accessibility/VoiceOver, and
then toward the bottom you will hear Rotor, and then Rotor Actions. Double tap
the rotor actions item, and you can select whether you want this to be turned
on or off. I do like the convenience of flicking to the editing option, but I
have also almost deleted apps at times, and I don't like that at all.

Wayne

Hi,
I do not have a solution for the web search issues with Siri. It does not read
those kind of results, you do have to use VoiceOver and I have no idea how to
get back to the list of links other than trying the same command with Siri
again. Not ideal.

AS for using Siri to compose Email, I don't use it unless the Email is one
fairly short sentence. Siri stops listening if you pause for a half a second...
Now, I have been known to use dictation in the body of an Email. Once in the
body of a reply or new Email, do the two-finger double tap and you'll hear a
ding, then you can dictate for up to about 30 seconds before Siri will begin
converting your speech to text. If you are done before that time, do another
two-finger double tap to let it know you are done.
That way, pausing isn't an issue.

HTH,
Richard

Re: Door locks with fingerprint technology with Bluetooth and accessible app?

2018-01-20 Thread englishrider91
My mom has a keypad lock like the one you mentioned. It drives me crazy,
because the numbers go from 1-5 along the top row, and 6-0 along the bottom
next row, with some unknown button right underneath the 8. I really wish it had
the numbers in a standard telephone layout, but I'm at their house so rarely
that it's not really a big deal. If I ever did get a keypad lock like this, I'd
like to find one with the numbers in the standard telephone layout.

Thanks,

You can also do this if your media app supports ChromeCast and you have
a ChromeCast or Google Home.

Subject: Bluetooth speaker and VoiceOver iOS 11.2.2

Hello,
Using VoiceOver on iOS 11.2.2, is there a means to have VoiceOver coming
through the device's speaker while having audio such as music be played
through the Bluetooth speaker? I thought that there was a means to do this
but I am not finding it. I have been through the audio section of the
VoiceOver settings but the only option I have discovered is a means to
switch audio channels which is not what I am looking to do.
Thank you in advance for any responses

Re: KNFB Reader v. Seeing AI

2018-01-20 Thread englishrider91
I've not had much luck with Seeing AI's document channel, either. Strange. I'm
getting a bit better at getting the hold steady announcement a little faster--I
guess all that practice with KNFB was helpful--but once the pic is processed by
Seeing AI, 99% of the time, I get a message about there being no text. It's
super frustrating. And since I'm pretty sure Seeing AI's default is to control
the flash automatically, and since I do get results on the same text using the
short text channel, I have no idea why this is happening.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: New Line Inquiry

2018-01-20 Thread Lynn White
Thanks. I meant to thank you earlier and got involved with other things. But
this works wonderfully.

I have run into the problem where I get inconsistent behavior when writing. I
have the phone locked in table top mode and yet if I press what should be dot
6, I get quotation marks. I’m probably asking too much, but is there a reason
why that happens?

I will say that when it’s working, the Braille input method is totally awesome.

RE: Optimising use of SIRI

2018-01-20 Thread Richard Turner

Ask Siri to translate a phrase to another language.

Ask Siri to find out a store's hours.

Ask Siri to convert measurements, like how many tablespoons in a cup?

Ask Siri to Facetime someone. Say, "Face time John Doe."

Ask Siri to solve math problems. "Siri, what is 15% of $250."

Open specific settings. "Siri, open Accessibility settings."

Ask Siri for walking directions or driving directions.

If your address is in contacts and you have selected your address under Siri--
my info, and you are out and about with someone and want directions to your
home, say, "Siri, take me home." You will be given turn by turn directions
from your current location to your home. You can also specify walking
directions.

Ask Siri, "What's the weather."

Ask Siri to turn on "Do not disturb." All calls are then silenced.

If you are not sure what Siri can do, ask "What can I say?" and you will get a
list of sample questions.

Say "Good bye," or "see you later." This dismisses Siri.

Hello Reg. In iOS 11 you can opt to have the edit mode turned on or
off with VoiceOver. If it is on, then you just have to flick up/down
on an app or folder on a home screen and VoiceOver will announce
editing. If the option is turned off, then you will have to double tap
and hold to turn on editing mode. Like Sieghard, I'm glad they removed
the extra verbage from the announcement we got in iOS 10 when on the
home screen. I did like this new thing with the ability to turn the
feature on or off depending on how you wanted things to operate. Until
that is I accidentally flicked ever so slightly on my home screens and
heard VoiceOver announce "editing", and then I quickly flicked up or
down again to go back to the default selection mode. To turn this
feature on or off, go to the VoiceOver settings, which is
settings/general/accessibility/VoiceOver, and then toward the bottom
you will hear Rotor, and then Rotor Actions. Double tap the rotor
actions item, and you can select whether you want this to be turned on
or off. I do like the convenience of flicking to the editing option,
but I have also almost deleted apps at times, and I don't like that at
all.

RE: Optimising use of SIRI

2018-01-20 Thread Tom Rash
I usually get direct answers when I ask Siri for walking, or driving, or public
transid directions to places: asking Siri to call someone who is in my
contacts: Asking Siri how to spell certain words or to define a word: Asking
Siri to answer calculations: Asking Siri what the weather is like anywhere in
the world: Asking Siri when did popular person die or how old popular personis.
So many other things as well.

Hi all,

Would someone be kind enough to tell me how to set up notifications on my
iPhone 7. .

I was getting notifications for a while. but now they have suddenly
stopped. and the only thing different I have done is to sign into
facebook, to log into Dice World.

I had a similar problem once before, on an iPhone 6. which was fixed
thanks to a member of this list. and having just looked at that E-mail,
all options suggested are on.
