RE: turning off do not disturb while driving

2018-02-03 Thread Merv Keck
I have had the same experience. Last week I missed an important message because
it came back. I’m thinking that every time I do an IOS update I’m going to have
to do the Do Not disturb dance. Which seriously disturbs me. Sad face!

The extra two dots allow you to have a cursor so you actually know where you
are editing.
The cursor is dots 7 and 8. And, by the way, I grew up with six dots as well.
Also if someone wanted to read in computer braille, you have to have the extra
dots. But as someone pointed out, that is not the target audience for the
BrailleMe device.
I'm just glad there are finally braille displays that are affordable.
The more the merrier.

I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares to
other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it
died after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a
new one was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the Orbit 20, which
I have not seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to switch
from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality using an SD card
and comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the
displays to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is no one
display that is right for everyone.

Good Morning,

For some reason there are times when I am listening to something and my volume
goes up all on its own. I turn it down and within a minute or less it goes back
up.

While doing this, it is making the sound that indicates the volume is going up
or down.

I'm not touching the phone or IPad when this happens. I am using the latest IOS
version.

Is there a setting I need to adjust somewhere?

Thanks.

In reading about the BrailleMe, it only has 6-dot cells instead of the usual
8-dot cells, so I presume that computer braille isn't really supported?

I did not dig too deeply, but is the battery user replaceable?

I like the idea of having the cursor routing buttons, I'm not sure about only
having 6 dots.

So the focus works well with ios 11? I thought it would be a fairly bulky
device what are your experiences for using it on the go? Does it work well in
combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you have to reach too far
back?
I hope the braille cells wont be broken too quickly… Greetings, Anouk,

Re: Siri problem

2018-02-03 Thread Richard Turner

I googled What does the name SIRI stand for. And found this article on the
Forbes web site:

Adam Cheyer, Co-Founder of Siri

As a startup, when coming up with Siri's name, we wanted something that was
easy to remember, short to type, comfortable to pronounce, and a not-too-common
human name. And we wanted to be able to get the domain name for not too much
money...

Once Siri became the leading candidate, everyone on the team had their own
favorite explanation of the meaning. Dag Kittlaus, our Norwegian-American CEO,
once considered using Siri as the name of his child and liked the Norse meaning
"beautiful woman who leads you to victory." For me, Siri, which means "secret"
in Swahili, was a tip of the hat to our pre-named days when we began as
stealth-company.com. I also liked the fact that it
was the reverse of Iris, a software system I helped build as part of the CALO
project which Siri spun out of. Some liked the resemblance to SRI, which was
the research institute that ran the CALO project. We knew about Siri = beauty
in Sinhalese, but missed that SHIRI = "butt" in Japanese (they're not the same
word, but closely pronounced...)

And it was all a big surprise for the team that
Apple decided to keep the original Siri
name for its launch as part of iOS. There were other candidates that were
leading, up until the final weeks...

This question originally
appearedon
Quora.

RE: Screen Recording

2018-02-03 Thread M. Taylor
This bug must have just been introduced because I have a screen recording from
about two weeks ago and it’s fine. However, I am experiencing the same problem
as reported, in my latest screen recording.

Very, very interesting.

We should all report this.

Sieghard, I received the screen recording you sent, off-list.

It’s getting so that I am becoming afraid of upgrading to even a small release
for fear of yet another iOS feature being broken.

This is a bug, when iOS 11 was first released Voiceover came through the
external speaker and was perfectly audible during playback. I haven’t used
screenrecording that often so I don’t know in which update this got broken, but
I noticed it as well a couple of weeks ago. I was going to send a message to
Apple Accessibility, but forgot. I think as many people as possible should send
a message, though, because screenrecording worked great for showing a developer
if something didn’t work in an app or if buttons were unlabelled etc. Now that
is no longer possible.

Hi,
I just tried it on my iPhone 6S. The VoiceOver volume returned to normal after
stopping the recording and then playing it back.
Now, if you mean the VoiceOver volume on the recording, it is very quiet
because it is in the earpiece during recording.
If you intend to have the screen recording include what VoiceOver is saying,
then you would probably need an external speaker.
I am not sure if there is a setting to have VoiceOver come over the speaker
during recording.

Dear all,
I have an issue with the screen recording feature in IOS 11. During recording,
the VO is heard only through the earpiece of the iPhone and after recording,
during playback, the VO volume is ver low such that one hardly hears it. I'm
using an iPhone 6s, IOS 11.2.5. What is the remedy?

BrailleMe was RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread Richard Turner
In reading about the BrailleMe, it only has 6-dot cells instead of the usual
8-dot cells, so I presume that computer braille isn't really supported?

I did not dig too deeply, but is the battery user replaceable?

I like the idea of having the cursor routing buttons, I'm not sure about only
having 6 dots.

Google "braille me" and you'll get the website on the first hit. It's a 20-cell
braille display with cursor routing buttons selling for about $450.

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares to
other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite. But, when it died
after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair when a new one
was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the Orbit 20, which I have not
seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to switch
from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality using an SD card and
comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the displays
to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is no one display that
is right for everyone.

The Focus works very well with laptops, iPhones, and other devices. You can
update the firmware yourself. I have done it. It is not bulky. It is very
sturdy. Especially the new fifth gen 40 and 14.. I still wish they had a 20

Re: Help a dummy. Quicknav and Apple TV

2018-02-03 Thread MrGrizzly
Hi

I am also having huge issues with QuickNav.
I am trying to setup Apple TV 4th Gen iOS 11.2.5 for my dad who is registered
blind.

He needs two things to overcome his disabilities, these being:-
1. Voiceover
2. A learned ‘bigger’ remote as the Apple remotw is too small and fiddly for
him to hold and operate properly.

I have setup the learned remote, and this operates the Apple TV perfectly.

I have enabled the voiceover and with the Apple remote, the voiceover is good
and works in all apps.

Good so far ...

If I now enable the voiceover and try to navigate using the nice big ‘learned
remote’ the navigation becomes totally unusable.
If I select Netflix it is as if the screen changes to Netflix but the
navigation is stuck on home screen. The outline cursor sits ‘between icons’,
vertical navigation becomes impossible, everything fails.

If I return to the home scree using the Apple TV rdmote and disable voiceover I
can then do everything perfectly using the learned remote controller.

My dad has been using a learned remote with voiceover perfectly well on Apple
TV 2nd Gen for some months now, exclusively for Netflix.
It has been so good that I got him Apple TV 4th Gen so he can enjoy BBC
iPlayer, ITV hub etc also. He was so disappointed when he gave it back telling
me it was rubbish. I put him back on the 2nd Gen, brought home the 4th Gen,
and Sadly I have to agree with him. It is totally unusable.

Reading lots of forums leads me to believe that the problem can be pinned down
to ‘QuickNav’.
Please, does anybody know anyvway to remove, disable QuickNav?

Anything that will make the 4th Gen RV usable for my dad will be mist welcome.

Thanks for reading my post.
Steve

Hi I agree on the 40 braille cells minimum. I am a very quick braille reader
and would not get enough range, so to speak, from anythin gless then 40 cells.

Speech Central Questions

2018-02-03 Thread Sandra E. Finley
Using fully updated iPhone 7 with Speech Central Pro. A few questions:

1. Has anyone found a user guide for this app?

2. I have been succcessful in adding web page articles to the app, but have not
been able to add a .pdf document I need to read. Got the .pdf as an attachment
to an email, opened it and tried to add to SC through the Share Sheet, but to
no avail.

3. Under Button Functions in settings there is something about remapping
buttons
To this app. How does one do that?

RE: Screen Recording

2018-02-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This is a bug, when iOS 11 was first released Voiceover came through the
external speaker and was perfectly audible during playback. I haven’t used
screenrecording that often so I don’t know in which update this got broken, but
I noticed it as well a couple of weeks ago. I was going to send a message to
Apple Accessibility, but forgot. I think as many people as possible should send
a message, though, because screenrecording worked great for showing a developer
if something didn’t work in an app or if buttons were unlabelled etc. Now that
is no longer possible.

Sieghard

Hi,
I just tried it on my iPhone 6S.

Subject: Signing in to my account on the Sonos app

Hello all,
I am finally getting around to linking my Sonos system with my Amazon products.
I can sign in on the computer but cannot sign into my account on the Sonos app
even though I know my password is correct. I need to do this in order to add
the Amazon system to my Sonos and link them. I can double tap the sign in
button all day but nothing happens. Is this a glitch in the app? I am using an
iPhone X with the latest update.

2018-02-03 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi I agree on the 40 braille cells minimum. I am a very quick braille reader
and would not get enough range, so to speak, from anythin gless then 40 cells.

RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread M. Taylor
I have only just reviewed this thread and its very interesting.

As for me, I would never consider purchasing anything other than a 40 cell
Braille display. I own a 20 cell Braille display but find it very fatiguing to
use.

Currently, I'm using a Focus 40 Blue that I obtained in 2013.

All I can say is that it is a true workhorse.

I have used it for hundreds and hundreds of Braille input hours and countless
more for Braille output. In fact, I used it to obtain my EBAE and UEB Braille
Proofreading and EBAE and UEB Braille Transcriber certification licenses.

It works beautifully with iOS 11.x.

Were I to purchase a new Braille display, based on my past experience and given
the fact that I am a Jaws for Windows user, I would stick with Freedom
Scientific products.

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it compares to
other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the full
braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite.

HTH,
Richard

2018-02-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just set it to automatic and back to manual and you never get the notifications
again.
If that doesn’t work, set it to automatic, then close all apps and reboot your
phone, now set it to manual and do another reboot. I don’t think it[‘s
necessary, though, just setting it to automatic and back to manual should do it.

ah. ok. that is why I didn't notice it. btw, they do have some web security you
might need to be aware of. whenever you log in, a message gets sent to your
phone with a code you must enter. sure, it's two factor authentication, but it
can be a pain sometimes.

Eric,

Thanks Eric,
It looks that coinbase is relatively accessible. However, when I tried to set

I suppose I could use it without setting up a code.
Thanks a lot for the recommendation.

I use CoinBase on the iPhone. it's decently accessible, except for creating

Google "braille me" and you'll get the website on the first hit. It's a 20-cell

RE: Screen Recording

2018-02-03 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Godwin,

I have conducted two screen recording sessions; 1 on my 8 Plus and 1 on my 6 S
Plus. In both instances, VoiceOver is played back at normal volume.

During the recordings, I used only the iphone’s internal speaker. I was very
pleased with the results.

I should add that I copied the recordings to my PC and played them back via
various applications including VLC and Microsoft Movie Maker.

Hi Richard,

RE: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread Richard Turner

HTH,
Richard

Hello all,
I am finally getting around to linking my Sonos system with my Amazon products.

Re: best braille display foor ios and bluetooth

2018-02-03 Thread Anouk Radix
So the focus works well with ios 11? I thought it would be a fairly bulky
device what are your experiences for using it on the go? Does it work well in
combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you have to reach too far
back?
I hope the braille cells wont be broken too quickly…

I tried the Brailliant for all of one day in early December. Bluetooth
sucked, and Usb was ok but not great. I sent it back. I now have the
focus 40 5th gen and absolutely love it. Dot quality is crisper, made of
more and steel no plastic, sd slot included for use as a future ability
to read books and possibly write in stand-alone mode. It comes with a
nice case, can connect to five bluetooth devices, and I would recommend
it.

I tried the Brailliant for all of one day in early December. Bluetooth
sucked, and Usb was ok but not great. I sent it back. I now have the focus
40 5th gen and absolutely love it. Dot quality is crisper, made of more
and steel no plastic, sd slot included for use as a future ability to
read books and possibly write in stand-alone mode. It comes with a nice
case, can connect to five bluetooth devices, and I would recommend it.

Screen Recording

2018-02-03 Thread Godwin Adoyi
Dear all,
I have an issue with the screen recording feature in IOS 11. During recording,
the VO is heard only through the earpiece of the iPhone and after recording,
during playback, the VO volume is ver low such that one hardly hears it. I'm
using an iPhone 6s, IOS 11.2.5. What is the remedy?
