RE: question from a new iphone user, about when you go in to the xm app

2018-03-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you use the same Apple Id for App Store purchases family sharing is not
necessary, it is exactly for that purpose so that family members with different
Apple Id’s can share apps purchased by either one of them.
Kepp in mind that if you set up family sharing there has to be an organiser or
whatever you want to call it, the main person whpo sets it up and invites the
other or others. That person’s credit card will be used also for purchases by
other family members. If you don’t want this then the other family member would
have to buy an iTunes gift card and redeem that on their account so that the
credit is on their account. Then if they purchase something it will come off
their credit balance until it is used up.
If you have family sharing set up you can also subscribe to the family plan of
Apple music. Instead of $9.99 for an individual subscription, a family
subscription is only $14.99 and it can be used I think by up to 4 people. Each
gets to have their own preferences, music recommendations based on their taste,
download music they like to their phone etc.

Arlene,

After you sign in to the app, you will have five tabs across the bottom of the
app. From left to right the tabs are Channels, Recent, Search, Me, and
Favorites. If you know the channle that you are looking for, it’s easiest to
search for that channel in the search tab. If you want to browse by category,
you want the channel tab. They have improved accessibility some recently. The
app is pretty good now. Good luck. I love my Sirius/XM.
Not sure why it’s not working for Bill, but I can get Siri to open Sirius/XM by
saying open XM every time. I wonder if this is working for anyone else?

Re: Apple proposes new emojis for people with disabilities, CNET

2018-03-24 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think the NFB holds Apple in disdain or is motivated by whether
Apple donates to the NFB or not. The NFB has passed plenty of
resolutions praising Apple, and on non-iPhone mailing lists that I';m
on, the NFB is considered quite pro-Apple. Apple is also not perfect, so
there are areas where Apple can be legitimately criticized. My point is
that Apple fan boys and Android fan boys are going to see the NFB
through their own opinions.

I'm not sure how I feel about these emojis. On one hand, I applaud
having some blindness related emojis. On the other hand, I'm not a fan
of the short canes. I also don't think people will be making cane buying
decisions based on an emoji.

than develop an image representative of independent blind travel. The
blind people in the emoji’s are holding really short white canes with
red tips and a black golf grip with the nylon cord around their
wrists, which can often be a safety hazard. If blind people have their
canes caught in the doors of rapid transit or light rail trains, they
could be dragged to their deaths when the train rapidly accelerates
rather than having the cane just knocked out of their hand if a strap
is not wrapped around their wrist. It sets a poor example of cane use

withdraw its submission and create new emoji that actually
demonstrates safe independent travel.

The new symbols feature men and women walking with a cane and touching
their
ear, as well as standalone icons of a hearing aid and prosthetic arm.
Apple has been making a big push to ensure that its devices are accessible
for all users. The company's iPhones, Macs and other devices include plenty

easily use those devices.
In Apple's own words:
"Apple is requesting the addition of emoji to better represent individuals

not represent the experiences of those with disabilities. Diversifying the
options available helps fill a significant gap and provides a more

RE: question from a new iphone user, about when you go in to the xm app

You can set up Family sharing and this allows you to use apps purchased by
somebody else whose Apple Id is associated with the family account.
There may be some exceptions, but most apps allow family sharing. Of course if
an app is a free app it doesn’t really matter.
Apps which require in-app purchases often cannot be shared, i.e. you can’t
share the in-app purchase you made with somebody else who is on the family

I have them all, but I prefer Nearby explorer from APH. For one thing, the maps
are downloaded to your device, so you can still use it even if you lose
internet connectivity. The screens are configurable, so you can display only
the kinds of info that you need. For a one time payment of $79, I think it is
well worth the money, and at least so far, APH has not charged for updates.
Also, there is an Email list where you can get good support and APH staff

Re: Apple proposes new emojis for people with disabilities, CNET

2018-03-24 Thread Kelly Pierce
I became suspicious when I noticed that the only blindness
organization consulted by Apple in press reports was the American
Council of the Blind. A sighted friend examined the emojis and found
the canes appear to only extend to the elbows of the blind people, who
appear to be age 12. This cane length is below the sternum, which is
the minimum cane length advocated by the Association for Education and
Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired. ACB regularly
affiliates with AER. The National Federation of the Blind recommends
that white canes extend past the chin. It is sad Apple has brazenly
picked a political side in the white canes and travel debate rather
than develop an image representative of independent blind travel. The
blind people in the emoji’s are holding really short white canes with
red tips and a black golf grip with the nylon cord around their
wrists, which can often be a safety hazard. If blind people have their
canes caught in the doors of rapid transit or light rail trains, they
could be dragged to their deaths when the train rapidly accelerates
rather than having the cane just knocked out of their hand if a strap
is not wrapped around their wrist. It sets a poor example of cane use
to the public and blind people everywhere. I will ask Apple to
withdraw its submission and create new emoji that actually
demonstrates safe independent travel.

Re: What GPS App are You Using?

2018-03-24 Thread Kelly Pierce
As discussed earlier, NE uses Navtekq maps, which can deliver
complicated pedestrian routs. Wen I get a weird route from NE, I fire
up Blind Square and get a sane and easy to follow route from Apple
Maps.

No one needs to pay $79 if they don't want to. It is easy to find
iTunes gift cards discounted by 15 or 20 percent, reducing the price
by about 10 to 15 dollars. the price difference in Canada reflects the
weakness of the Canadian dollar. the world is in love with US Treasury
paper along with that of the financially sound EU countries of Germany
and northern Europe. APH must charge more in Canada to compensate for
the weak Canadian dollar or the strong US dollar, depending on which
side of the boarder someone stands.

And $79 is the US price, here in Canada it is $109.99.

There is also the Nearby Explorer Online app which is free. It has many
features of the paid app, but as the name suggests it does not have maps
downloaded to the phone and you need a data connection for it to work. It also
has a few other limitations, sounds like it does not give turn by turn
directions, just tells you where you are as you are walking similar to
Blindsquare.

Also, a 1-year subscription for the Seeing Eye GPS app is currently still
discounted I think as a promo for the CSUN conference.

dani,

Perhaps you could say what kind of traveling you plan to do using a GPS
app, since everyone's use is different.

Most GPS apps use data but there are two apps I know of that download the
maps onto your device, so do not require data. Nearby Explorer, $79.99, and
requires close to '3 GB of space on your phone for the United States map I
think.

Though an update is just out that may allow you to download smaller regions
including a map for England. It is made specifically for visually impaired
users.

The other one with on board maps is Navigon, which is about $60 for the US
and Canada, or you can buy regions for around $30, plus it has apps for other
countries'. Navigon works fine with VoiceOver, but is not as user friendly as
Nearby explorer.

Are you app to mostly be walking or using the bus, or what?

HTH,

Richard

competition Does it need a data plan to function outside the reach of
WiFi (newbie's still getting used to the difference between iPhone and

Re: Help with One Password

2018-03-24 Thread Maria Reyes
Hi,,
Have you tried to see if there is a reveal button / rotor action like there is
to show a password? Philip, I don’t know of any tutorials but I will say
1Password’s very accessible with Vo.

Re: MusicStreamer App by Stratospherix

Alan,
I m debating on getting filebrowser or music streamer to play FLAC and
MP3 files.
Much of what I listen to is talking material and I would need a "seek
bar" to move forward or back during the playing.
Do both of these have a seek bar?
Thanks,

I have them all, but I prefer Nearby explorer from APH. For one thing, the
maps are downloaded to your device, so you can still use it even if you
lose internet connectivity. The screens are configurable, so you can
display only the kinds of info that you need. For a one time payment of
$79, I think it is well worth the money, and at least so far, APH has not
charged for updates. Also, there is an Email list where you can get good
support and APH staff monitor and participate on the list.

Hi, Everyone.
Now that my iPhone is being put to full use, I'm considering getting a
GPS app--not sure what the proper name is for it; I had a Trekker till
2010.

What are y'all using? Why did you choose that particular app over its
competition Does it need a data plan to function outside the reach of
WiFi (newbie's still getting used to the difference between iPhone and
iPodTouch.)?

Thanks,
Dani

It is comprehensive. It will give orientation and you can create routes. In
fact, it is much easier to create routes in Seeing Eye than it is with NE. I'm
just not sure that it is worth the price, but that's a personal value judgment.

Seeing Eye GPS does offer a one time purchase for $299 u. S. and they often
discount it for the summer conventions. They had to offer this because they
wanted to sell it to the VA, and the VA does not pay for subscriptions.

There is also the Nearby Explorer Online app which is free. It has many

I am not sure of the price of Blind Square these days. I believe I paid about
$20 for it when it first came out, but the price did increase. I think it is
about $35 now. Seeing Eye is $69 per year, or you can buy a one time
subscription for $299. Last year they discounted the one time option by $100
during the summer for the conventions. Soundscape is free, but it is limited.
It is designed to orient you to your surroundings when walking. I do not think
it would work at all in a moving vehicle, and you can't create routes, or
anything like that.
Blind Square does not have routing capability within the app, but it does
interface with Apple Maps and Google Maps.

get around. Such as some of the drug stores, such as walgreens and cvs. From
what we could tell newsline app wasn't on the ipad. Are app sometimes called
something different on the ipad verses what the same app would be called on the
phone.
When you have a link to either a podcast or an app, what's the best way of
getting it into the phone? would you be able to send it either to your phone

  Arlene,

After you sign in to the app, you will have five tabs across the bottom of
the app.
Not sure why it’s not working for Bill, but I can get Siri to open Sirius/XM
by saying open XM every time. I wonder if this is working for anyone else?

I have them all, but I prefer Nearby explorer from APH. For one thing, the
maps are downloaded to your device, so you can still use it even if you
lose internet connectivity. The screens are configurable, so you can
display only the kinds of info that you need. For a one time payment of
$79, I think it is well worth the money, and at least so far, APH has not
charged for updates. Also, there is an Email list where you can get good
support and APH staff monitor and participate on the list.

downloaded to the phone and you need a data connection for it to work. It also
has a few other limitations, sounds like it does not give turn by turn
directions, just tells you where you are as you are walking similar to
Blindsquare.

Also, a 1-year subscription for the Seeing Eye GPS app is currently still
discounted I think as a promo for the CSUN conference.

  dani,

Perhaps you could say what kind of traveling you plan to do using a GPS app,
since everyone's use is different.

  Richard

Seeing Eye GPS does offer a one time purchase for $299 u. S. and they often
discount it for the summer conventions. They had to offer this because they
wanted to sell it to the VA, and the VA does not pay for subscriptions.

If you do an encrypted backup to iTunes it will back up passwords as well.
Also, was said before about your data getting erased when the battery is
replaced makes no sense.
Of course I would definitely recommend that you have a backup, but your phone

I have them all, but I prefer Nearby explorer from APH. For one thing, the
maps are downloaded to your device, so you can still use it even if you lose
internet connectivity. The screens are configurable, so you can display only
the kinds of info that you need. For a one time payment of $79, I think it
is well worth the money, and at least so far, APH has not charged for
updates. Also, there is an Email list where you can get good support and APH
staff monitor and participate on the list.

Thanks,
Dani

dani,

Perhaps you could say what kind of traveling you plan to do using a GPS app,
since everyone's use is different.

Most GPS apps use data but there are two apps I know of that download the maps
onto your device, so do not require data. Nearby
Explorer, $79.99, and requires close to '3 GB of space on your phone for the
United States map I think.

Though an update is just out that may allow you to download smaller regions
including a map for England. It is made specifically for
visually impaired users.

The other one with on board maps is Navigon, which is about $60 for the US and
Canada, or you can buy regions for around $30, plus
it has apps for other countries'. Navigon works fine with VoiceOver, but is not
as user friendly as Nearby explorer.

Are you app to mostly be walking or using the bus, or what?

Most GPS apps use data but there are two apps I know of that download the maps

RE: What GPS App are You Using?

Hi.

Is $79 for Nearby explorer just a one-time charge?

Thanks!

dani,

Perhaps you could say what kind of traveling you plan to do using a GPS app,
since everyone's use is different.

Most GPS apps use data but there are two apps I know of that download the maps
onto your device, so do not require data. Nearby Explorer, $79.99, and requires
close to '3 GB of space on your phone for the United States map I think.

Though an update is just out that may allow you to download smaller regions
including a map for England. It is made specifically for visually impaired
users.

The other one with on board maps is Navigon, which is about $60 for the US and
Canada, or you can buy regions for around $30, plus it has apps for other
countries'. Navigon works fine with VoiceOver, but is not as user friendly as
Nearby explorer.

Are you app to mostly be walking or using the bus, or what?

HTH,

Richard

What are y'all using? Why did you choose that particular app over its

Will a backup in iTunes suffice. Also when you backup to iTunes do you
maintain all your logins that are already setup or do you have to reset
everything from scratch.

Hello all dicers,

So, hoping someone can help me.

Is there a way to surrender games that you are playing with people?

There are 3 games that these players are just not playing for days on end, and
I am 1 move from losing anyways and just want to be done with the games.

Its been 3 days sense they have taken their turn.

If they take a turn, then they will wait another 3/4 days to take another turn.

I have had these games going on for like a month.

I know that when playing against the computer, you can surrender, just can't
find that feature when playing against people.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Help with One Password

2018-03-24 Thread phillip tracy
Hi. Is there a tutorial detailing how this app works from a blind person's
perspective? If so, could someone please direct me there? If not, would someone
be willing to contact me off list to help me learn how to use and get the most
out of this app? I read all the documentation, but with severe ADHD, I'm afraid
I was unable to gain an understanding of how to use the app, and how it works.
I'm really looking forward to being able to change my passwords monthly and
never have to remember them again.

You can email me off list at tracyp4...@me.com.

Thanks in advance.

I am guessing that you are working with 1password on iOS? I would suggest
closing it out in the app switcher and reopening it to see if the problem
clears up. You also might restart your iOS device and see if that helps. It is
all working normally for me.

Loadstone for ios

2018-03-24 Thread Richard Turner

Since there was a post referring to Loadstone within a general GPS thread, I
thought I'd start a separate thread. Also, I did not know Loadstone was
available for iOS. It is $7.99.
Here is the link to the app store for those who are wanting to check it out. I
have not purchased it, so this is not an endorsement, just sharing information.

Re: notes app and automatic numbering

2018-03-24 Thread Richard Turner

No. But you can trick it.
You have to hit return twice at the end of each line putting a blank line
between your parts and it will not do a list.
Or, you have to use words instead of numbers.

Dear Dani,

the apps are generally called navigation apps. GPS is only one means
the iPhone uses to determine location. iPhones also use GLONASS, the
Russian satellite navigation system and WIFI signals. Newer iPhones
also support the new European satellite navigation system.

You do not say where in the world you live. Most apps work only in
certain countries. also, you do not say if you live in or near one of
the top metropolitan areas in your country or in a rural area, which
likely has limited cell service.

Talk to you later.

notes app and automatic numbering

This is a question for the people who use the notes app on ios on a regular

Second question, if the app is going to automatically create a list as soon as
you start numbering, what is the purpose of the numbered list item in the text
styles menu?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Revisiting Using DropBox and BARD

2018-03-24 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Dani,

I'll tell you how I get BARD zip files in one of my Dropbox subfolders into
BARD Mobile and it doesn't involve using the Dropbox app. I use the Files app
which I believe was introduced with iOS 11. Here's what I do:

1. Open the Files app.
2. Select the Browse button from the bottomline menu.
3. From the list of available locations, swipe right until focus is on Dropbox
personal and double tap.
4. Swipe until you reach your BARD subfolder and double tap.
5. Swipe until you reach the BARD zip file you wish to transfer and double tap.
6. In the upper right corner is a share button which you should double tap.
7. On the share screen that opens, swipe right until you hear copy to BARD
Mobile and then double tap.
8. I got somewhat spotty success but found that it worked best when BARD Mobile
was not running before I did step 7 to copy to BARD Mobile. When I made sure I
removed BARD Mobile from the App Switcher before copying the file to it, it
immediately opened when I executed the copy and I was located in my Bookshelf
where I had to double tap on Audiobooks to complete the transfer.
9. Also, depending on how large the zip book is, you might experience a few
seconds delay in the Files app when launching the share screen.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Subject: Revisiting Using DropBox and BARD

Hi, Everyone.
I'm trying again to download books with BARD from Dropbox. I have the latest
version of both apps.

I have copied the zipped DTB files over to the BARD folder in Dropbox, but
can't get further than that. I can't see the "Open with" option that the BARD
Help file says is supposed to come up.

When the .zip file sits outside the folder and I try to use the Share option,
I'm told that Dropbox can't open zipped files.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Dani

Re: Dice world and surrendering

That is the way the game was set up. Some people don’t have time to play a game

everyone can do that. They may have circumstances that keep them from playing

Nearby Explorer update to version 1.20

2018-03-24 Thread Richard Turner
Version 1.20, 15h ago, * adds a tree-like control to the OpenStreetMap Manager
for selecting regions from different continents and countries. * Adds England
to the available OpenStreetMap maps. * Displays and speaks a download message
when starting to download any OSM map. This lets you know if map(s) are being
updated automatically. * Fixes Help to point to the new location for the
manual. * Fixes a bug where the toolbar icons for Geobeam and Compass Mode
did not always indicate the correct state at startup. * Adds a background
color to the navigation buttons in Virtual Navigation mode, making them look
more like buttons. * It is now necessary to use the Close option from any
context menu to close the menu when not running VoiceOver. Before, touching
outside the menu would close it, but this often resulted in accidental closure
of the menu when attempting to choose an item. * Adds the default UUID for
the BlueUp - BlueBeacon Maxi for use with Ad Hoc Beacons.

Re: What GPS App are You Using?

2018-03-24 Thread Richard Turner

dani,
Perhaps you could say what kind of traveling you plan to do using a GPS app,
since everyone's use is different.

HTH,
Richard

Dice world and surrendering

2018-03-24 Thread Jeremy Gilley
Hello all dicers,

So, hoping someone can help me.

Is there a way to surrender games that you are playing with people?

There are 3 games that these players are just not playing for days on end,
and I am 1 move from losing anyways and just want to be done with the games.

Its been 3 days sense they have taken their turn.

If they take a turn, then they will wait another 3/4 days to take another
turn.

I have had these games going on for like a month.

I know that when playing against the computer, you can surrender, just can't
find that feature when playing against people.

Thanks for any help.

What GPS App are You Using?

2018-03-24 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
Now that my iPhone is being put to full use, I'm considering getting a
GPS app--not sure what the proper name is for it; I had a Trekker till
2010.

What are y'all using? Why did you choose that particular app over its
competition Does it need a data plan to function outside the reach of
WiFi (newbie's still getting used to the difference between iPhone and
iPodTouch.)?

Thanks,
Dani

Revisiting Using DropBox and BARD

2018-03-24 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I'm trying again to download books with BARD from Dropbox. I have the
latest version of both apps.

I have copied the zipped DTB files over to the BARD folder in Dropbox,
but can't get further than that. I can't see the "Open with" option
that the BARD Help file says is supposed to come up.

When the .zip file sits outside the folder and I try to use the Share
option, I'm told that Dropbox can't open zipped files.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Dani

Re: question about the iPhone X

2018-03-24 Thread Arlene
Wayne, We've got t-mobile, so far, so good. Was your t-mobile experience
something to watch out for? With all you said I could understand why you
went with the 7 plus. It never hurts to ask someone what made their
decision, becauseof all these informative details and points that you
wouldn't know unless you were shopping around. Thank you.

Arlene,
Largely I went with the 7 Plus because of cost; the iPhone X is around
$1,000 for the base model. However, there in general were not any real
big feature draws for me, the new animations were not appealing, and
seemed more like a waste and fluff to me; the wireless charging
sounded nice, but the fact that Apple did not include a wireless
charger in the box with the X was a big downer; and, the storage.
iPhone X comes in 64 and 256 gig sizes. I have a 128 gig phone, and I
wanted to hang onto that storage size for a bit longer. 128 is more
than enough for me, and 256 seemed like it would be too much. In
short, I couldn't justify the upgrade to the X. When I got the 7 Plus,
the big advantage for me personally was that my wife and I switched US
carriers from T-Mobile to AT We were not satisfied with our
T-Mobile services, especially last summer, and were more than ready to
switch. AT may cost more, but you get what you pay for. One other
minor reason for the 7 Plus is it still has the touch ID sensor. Touch
ID strikes me as being lots more reliable than Face ID, from what I've
heard from others. Yes, I know the 8 and 8 Plus have Touch ID, but see
my comments earlier on the wireless charging issue. Granted, Apple can
do what they want and charge what they want, but not including a
wireless charger with the phone is like not including a wired charger
with the phone; if they did that and charged people for the
accessories then there would be lots of unhappy and angry customers.

I've started seeing rumors on YouTube that the iPhone X will stop

production in early summer due to low demand. Time will tell, and

Apple will reveal more at their WWDC event in June and later the fall

press event when they reveal the new iPhone/iOS versions and features.

I was ready for a new phone last summer, but waited for the event on

the new phone last fall, and decided the new phones weren't for me. I

ended up getting a 7 Plus, which I am very happy with.

We're not looking for a new phone, but from time to time it's good to check
on what's out there. It's interesting to take a look at the different
phones to see what they are like.

That's good to know, and as far as the home button is concerned, is it just
like tapping anywhere else on the screen? While we can't afford the x now,
we'd like to see how it is the next time we go to the store.

No, no accessibility problems, no any other problem.

Hi Arlene;

Not having a home button took a little getting use to but, I don’t find it
any less accessible.

Write me off list and, we’ll discuss it further.

I think it had the number 720 in the model number.

Thanks in advance
