Please Join Me in Requesting That the Yelp for iOS Category List View Bug Be Resolved

2018-04-05 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I recently posted the following Yelp for iOS review in the App Store
regarding a new category list view bug that occurs with or without VoiceOver
enabled..

I hope you will add your voice to this request for help by using any or all
of it in your feedback to Yelp either on the App Store or via Twitter at:
@YelpSupport.

Thank you,

Mark

[BEGIN FEEDBACK]:

Subject: Cannot Get the More Button, that Leads to Category View to be
Displayed

Hello,

In the latest version of this app, when location services are enabled, the
More button (see attached photo on Twitter), that is supposed to be listed
as the last icon in the group of icons near the top of the display, in the
Nearby Area, is not showing. Unlike the More tab, located at the bottom of
the display, the button in question allows the user to see a complete list
of various categories from which to choose.

With location services enabled, I have been able to get the More icon to be
displayed on my iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon Wireless). However, I cannot get it
to be displayed on my 6 Plus (Verizon Wireless), my 6 S Plus (Sprint), or my
8 Plus (AT&T Wireless) phones. All of my devices are running iOS 11.3.

Currently, the only way I can get the More icon to be consistently displayed
is to uninstall the app from my phone, reboot the phone, reinstall the app,
and electing to not allow location services. Then, and only then, does the
More iCon appear in its expected location. The problem is that as soon as I
enable location services, the icon disappears.

This is an extremely annoying bug that I hope will be resolved as soon as
possible.

Thank you,

[END FEEDBACK]:

Mark

I will say though I have an iPhone 7 and the one thing I don’t like is that if

In addition, the SE has a headphone jack. If you require that to be present on
the iPhone.

I do want to point out as well that even though from the 7 onwards, you can use
headphones which use the the older style of connecting. Not sure what it is
called but you will need to use the dongal which will enable you to use a 7 and
onwards iPhone which do not feature a headphone jack. You should get the dongal
in your purchase if 7 or above. I know it's less convenient, but at least apple
provided a solution and believe me, if they didn't, I wouldn't of brought
another iPhone.

Certainly not because they are not amazing devices which we can hold in the
palm of our hands but in my particular use case. I use a device which assists
me with my hearing and the device where I can plug it in to listen to audio
related stuff, simply required the headphone jack to be present.

So if you are at all concerned about plugging in old headphones which use the
jack, rest assured for now at least, apple has it covered. Depending on which
newer iPhone you purchase.

I hope this has been of some help.

Funny how the removal of just one thing could effect one's own view with a
product. I actually got quite anxious about the headphone jack removal. For now
though, I'm not so worried.

insuring that any analog audio equipment you have will work as usual. Also,
the price of the 6 S is significantly less than the 7, 8, and 10 series

You ask:

As for your charger, the answer is, No, you will not have to replace it as all

Bill, I realize that upgrading to a new phone can be very scary and I don't
blame you for hesitating to do so. However, in all things, change is
unavoidable so it's best to do it on your own terms, whenever possible.

I won't kid you, it is quite possible that some of your favorite apps have not

Hi Richard,

It is slightly newer than the 6S, but it actually has older technology. The
processor is the same, but it still has the first generation Touch Id sensor
(same as the 5S) whereas the 6S and 6S Plus have a faster and more reliable
Touch Id home button. The SE also does not support 3D Touch whereas the 6S and
6S Plus do. I would absolutely not recommend an SE at this late stage of the
cycle and while my wife has a 6S and I have a 6S Plus and they are very good
phones and we like them, I would probably even suggest to go with an iPhone 7
as the minimum. Yes, it doesn’t have the 3.5mm headphone jack any more and come
with a set of Lightning Earpods and if you want to use a wired headset and
charge at the same time you need the Belkin Rockstart adapter/splitter.

Anyhow, Bill asked if he needs to reconnect his bluetooth keyboard and headset
so it seems like he is using a bluetooth headset more than maybe a wired
headset and if so the lack of the 3.5mm headphone jack is probably not an issue
for him.

Bill, if you think you want to keep your next phone for 4 years than I would
definitely suggest you look at getting an iPhone 7, if you can afford an iPhone
8 then get an iPhone 8, it is the most future proof and will let use use
wireless charging, but you have to buy a wireless charging pad, they are not
expensive on Amazon, maybe $20 or $30, less than an original Apple Lightning
cable. Of course you can still plug it in as well.

The iPhone 7 is only offered with 32Gb or 128Gb, the iPhone 8 is offered in
64Gb or 256Gb. I don’t know how much storage your current 5S has, but 32Gb is
almost not enough if you want to put a bunch of music on it and also take some
pictures. If you primarily just want apps on it and use a music streaming
service where you don’t store music on the phone or if you don’t care much
about listening to music on your iPhone then 32Gb is probably fine.

Lastly I would recommend that if you have an Apple Store nearby that you simply
ask them to help you to make sure your 5S is backed up and to then switch your
SIM (your current SIM from the 5S will work in the newer phones) and lastly to
restore your backup and make sure everything is as it should. If you bring your
keyboard, tile and headset they can even make sure they are connected and
working. You may have to tweek a few things, but for the most part you would
walk into an Apple Store with your old 5S and you would walk out a couple of
hours later with a new phone which is fully set up more or less the same as
your old one. trans

Sieghard

Re: is anyone using the sams store app?

2018-04-05 Thread Julie Dawson
I found the check out part to be difficult. I was striving to add my payment
method and found selecting the expiration date and where to put the card
number confusing. I also found the picker items when selecting the state in the
address to be sluggish.

I got the sams app. we didn't get the scan and go. We'd like too pick out
the products on the app to be able to submit to pick up at the store. One of
the sales associate showed us how to shop online with the shopping cart, and
that we could submit the orders of the products to be picked up at the store.
Is this the best way or what way would be the right way to get this done. Also
as she was showing us, she said to search for the product, is that the best way
or is there away to go through the products? Thank you.

I am not sure if you are talking about the Sam's app or the scan and go.
The scan and go app allows you to scan your items while shopping. You can then
check out on your phone. I use it all the time.
The Sam's app is for shopping online and also finding in store
availability of items.

RE: is anyone using the sams store app?

2018-04-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Arlene,

I'm always a bit hesitant to answer posts asking for the best way to do
something. The best way can vary widely depending on the individual doing it.
With that said, I use the Sam's club app to interface with my account where I
usually use my computer and Firefox to place my Sam's orders. I make sure that
I add products that I repeatedly buy to a Favorites list which makes ordering
them in the future easier. I'll go online on my computer, add the items I want
to my cart, and then purchase them. I'll get notified via email and the app
when the order is ready to pick up and I go to my local Sam's where the items
are in a cart ready to pick up and depart with after I've signed in at the
pickup kiosk within the store and a Sam's employee directs me to my stuff. I
suspect this might work differently at different Sam's stores. I know the
process hasn't been identical even at my same store so I suspect it's evolving.

Good luck.

Alan Lemly

Braille Typing echo and misspelled words inconsistency please confirm bug

2018-04-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello,

I'm using Brailliant BI 40 to write text and, if I'm inserting into a
pre-existing text and there's content after the cursor, the typing echo that's
set to words does not work at all, but rather reds a portion of word following
cursor. Misspelled words are also never being indicated by vo.
Is this something others have had problems with? Is it display specific? I'd
like to hear from others about their experience before I contact apple. I have
just noticed that echo works fine if Braille input isset to 8 dot.

Thaarks for any findings about this problem.

Hello,

Yes, I agree the predictive engine is amazing. It sure makes typing out emails

to see what new and amazing features they add to the keyboard app, and
hopefully soon the full keyboard extension.

Re: Scanning formats?

2018-04-05 Thread Richard Turner

I know KNFB Reader crunches everything into one paragraph.
I've had good luck with Seeing AI using the document scan. But, medical bills
are often set up as a table and those can be really tricky. You may want to
just take a photograph, or with the OCR apps, there should also be an option to
send the original image, so no processing has been done.

Scanning formats?

2018-04-05 Thread Kimberly Samco
Hello,

I have great success using both the Seeing AI and KNFB apps however when I send
something I’ve scanned to my husband he tells me the format is visually funky.
So far, these are medical bills. What format/app should I be using that allows
me to take a decent scan while also looking “normal’ to my husband?

As always...thanks for any help.

Kim

PS My 1Password issues are still not resolved but I will share the fix when it
happens. The developer is wowrking on it.

All good points.

I will say though I have an iPhone 7 and the one thing I don’t like is that if
you are charging your phone, you can’t use the plug-in headphones at the same
time as they both use the same port.

In addition, the SE has a headphone jack. If you require that to be present on

Since money is of great concern to you, and since I'm almost certain you do not
want to have to deal with the issue of swapping out any of your audio
connectors to the Lightening form-factor, I strongly suggest that you purchase
an iPhone 6 S, model. The 6 S model continues to offer the 3.5mm jack,
insuring that any analog audio equipment you have will work as usual. Also,
the price of the 6 S is significantly less than the 7, 8, and 10 series devices.

As far as I know, the only place from which you can purchase a new 6 S series

You ask:

As for your charger, the answer is, No, you will not have to replace it as all
Apple phones, currently being sold, as new, use the Lightening port charging

Bill, I realize that upgrading to a new phone can be very scary and I don't
blame you for hesitating to do so. However, in all things, change is
unavoidable so it's best to do it on your own terms, whenever possible.

I won't kid you, it is quite possible that some of your favorite apps have not
been updated to 64-bit and, thus, will not work in iOS 11. Regardless, given
that your 5 S is falling apart, I’m certain that you will gain more than you
lose by upgrading to a new device with a modern operating system.

Okay, that's about it.

Good luck, Bill, and try to have faith in yourself. You can do this.

RE: Upgrade process from iPhone 5S

2018-04-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

If you bring your
keyboard, tile and headset they can even make sure they are connected and
working. You may have to tweek a few things, but for the most part you would
walk into an Apple Store with your old 5S and you would walk out a couple of
hours later with a new phone which is fully set up more or less the same as
your old one. trans

Sieghard

There is an adapter you can find in the apple store which will allow you to do
it. It’s around $30 as I remember and it works well. Come to think of it,
there are two types, one for the new headphones and the other using the old
one, both though plugging into the phone and allowing the battery to be
charging while you use your headphones.

Re: Upgrade process from iPhone 5S

2018-04-05 Thread Kelly Pierce
The SE has the same processor as the 6s so Apple will end updates for
both at the same time. Based on previous Apple updates, I project that
the last full iOS release for these phones will be in 2019 and all
updates will cease by the summer of 2020. If you go for the SE, buy
the 128 GB version to fit all apps, podcasts, books, and music files.

Other carriers other than the majors offer cheaper cell phone service.
If you do not use a lot of data, you could easily find a cheaper cell
phone plan for less than $20 a month, including taxes. I have this
arrangement with Xfinity. If you have Comcast cable, the company
offers a gig of data for $12 with calls and text for free. If you are
a new phone customer, they sometimes offer good discounts on new
iPhones. If you are not with Comcast, they can be cost competitive.
When I came to the store for my phone service, they were offering new
customers $19.99 a month internet for a year with free installation.
With the savings with a mobile virtual network operator, you could get
a newer phone or one with more storage.

RE: Confusion with text and imaging apps

2018-04-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

You did already give good reviews, I would just add a few things:

Bispecular: it is a little bit like Be My Eyes, but instead of speaking to a
real person via Facetime with Bispecular you take a picture of something and
you then have the ability to attach a specific question to it. For example,
maybe you have 3 different bottles of soft drinks in your fridge. You could put
all three on the counter and ask which one is Coke. If it works as it should
and you attach this question to the picture hopefully the answer which comes
back would be something like “The one in the middle” or “The one of the right”.
Of course you could use Tap Tap See to get the same information by taking a
picture of each bottle, scanning barcodes for product identification can be
useful and the best way to identify something, but with thing likes cans or
bottles of pop, bags of chips or chocolate bars Tap Tap See does a very good
job and without the need to find the actual barcode.

I would agree that Seeing AI needs to be on every blind person’s phone, I used
to have Light Detector and the Nand Money Reader and it replaced both of these
apps for me and the short text channel of course is incredible for quickly
going through mail or sorting a bunch of papers which might be lying around.

My conclusion would be this with respect to what he should keep and then learn
how to use:

1. Seeing AI
2. KNFB Reader
3. Tap Tap See
4. Be My Eyes

All the rest, Digit Eyes, iDentifi, Goggles, Bispecular, iNote, Boop, Light
Detector and Color Visor are in my opinion all apps which can go, maybe Color
Visor can stay if he finds he is using it for certain things and it is working
for him.

Sieghard

Bill,
I will chime in with my two cents worth and list each of your apps and then my
observation.
KNFB Reader: keep it for sure as it works well with all iPhones and like you
said, you spent the most for it.

Be My Eyes: I’ve not used it, but based on their recent announcement that they
are partnering with companies to give you direct access to experts from other
companies, I am likely going to start using it. I use Windows computers, and
Microsoft Accessibility is the first company to partner with them.

Color Visor: Color Visor is fine. I like Examine Clothes Color a bit better,
and it is free, though you mention later TapTapSee, it also does a good job
with color and also patterns. Though no iPhone app is going to match a
physical Color Identifier like the Rainbow II.
is good, and I have used it. I wonder if it will survive when I finally do the
iOS 11 upgrade.

Goggles: Goggles is pretty useless. Seeing AI is free and does more than
Goggles ever thought of doing.
BeSpecular: I’ve not used.
iNote: This one is going to work great on a newer device. They had an update
in January of 2018 to work with iOS 11 and 64 bit phones.

iDentifi: This one seems to have died on the vine. No updates. The high
school kid that developed it must have gotten focused on other things.

Tap Tap See: TapTapSee, is an excellent app for identifying many things. You
simply need to practice taking pictures with it. I find being about 8 inches
away from the object works quite well. It doesn’t save pictures to your camera
roll, though it keeps a history of things you have identified, but doesn’t seem
to take up much memory.
Boop: Boop, Light Detector, and Seeing AI, and I think others; are good apps to
have. If you don’t have Seeing AI, get it and check out the videos by the
blind developer. I stick with Boop for quick light detection because it is
free. You simply point the camera and it beeps based on the amount of light
in the room. You can also move it around to find the brightest light source.

Digit Eyes: The $9.99 version does a lot more, but seeing AI has a product
channel now that is also quite good with bar codes. Digit-Eyes might be a bit
faster in pulling up the information.
Light Detector: as you say, do you need two of these. Probably not. Boop
beeps, whereas Light Detector gives a solid tone. Keep the one you like best.

Re: Upgrade process from iPhone 5S

2018-04-05 Thread Daniel McGee

2018-04-05 Thread Richard Turner

Bill, Mark covered most points very well.
I would point out that the iPhone SE is the same size as the 5s and is slightly
newer than the 6s, if that makes any difference for you.

Hello Bill,

You ask questions that some may be reluctant to answer for the simple fact that
each person's circumstances are unique.

Be that as it may, I will offer some suggestions in order to assist you.
Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion.

As for determining how to tell which apps will not function in iOS 11, I will
place the steps and a link to the article below my signature.

1.
To manually backup your device to iCloud, from the Settings menu, select your
name.

2.
Select iCloud.

3.
Select and explore the Backup area.

Now, as for your other questions:

1.

As far as I know, the only place from which you can purchase a new 6 S series
phone is from Apple, be it online or at an Apple store.

2.
You ask:
"When I get the new phone, will I need to reconnect my bluetooth devices, my
keyboard, a tile I have on my key ring, and my headphones? Will I need to
replace these.?

Answer:
All things being equal, you will probably need to re-pair your Bluetooth
devices. Will you need to replace them? I should think not.

As for your charger, the answer is, No, you will not have to replace it as all
Apple phones, currently being sold, as new, use the Lightening port charging
system.

Sincerely,

Mark

which apps won't work on iOS 11

How can I find 32-bit apps on my device?

Discovering any old apps that haven't been updated is very simple.

On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings > General > About, and then look for
Applications in the list.

which apps won't work on iOS 11

If you don't have any applications that are 32-bit then tapping Applications
will do nothing. But if you see an arrow on the right side of that section then
tap on it and you'll be presented with a list of all the 32-bit apps on your
device.

Hello, again list.

I am concerned about the process of upgrading my 5S to a better model. It is
falling apart, as I have lost the physical mute switch and the touch screen is
sitting on the phone and I have to be careful not to lose it. The case has
been gradually losing pieces. I have had it for four years, so it is really
overdue for a replacement.

First, I am having trouble with the iOS 11 installation cycle. It seems to be
failing due to lack of capacity, but I’m not sure if this is really the issue.
I am concerned about updating apps to accommodate this new version, and I
vaguely recall hearing there is a way to tell which apps might have trouble
working when I go from iOS 10 to 11.

I worry about the transfer of my apps and data to a new phone, fearing I may
lose somethingin the process. I know I can back up the phone to iCloud, but
am not sure if this is happening automaticallyofr if there is some step I need
to take to do this just before the switch.

When I get the new phone, will I need to reconnect my bluetooth devices, my

replace these. I also have a stand for my K-NFB reader I might need to

Let me add that many, many times this is what will happen: I will hold the
phone a foot above a document on the "document" channel (with proper

"no text recognized". There are normal documents I have tried this on ten

Raise your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start

To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Hello Sieghard,

Yes, I do believe that my camera lens is clean.

And no, I've never gotten Seeing AI to work.

However, I have a money reader App on my phone. It seems to work just
fine. I had a little bit of a problem the other day. But I was able to
work it out.
