Re: API changes will break Tweetbot and Twitteriffic alerts and streaming, Twitter not yet sharing new solution ahead of June deadline | 9to5Mac

2018-04-06 Thread Maria Reyes
Really? Do they have to remove push notifications? I have enabled push
notifications for the Apple news sources that I follow, and like to be updated
with the news. What about mentions? DM’s? Everyone doesn’t want to open their
Twitter apps all the time.

Yeah, it got them to clarify their position alright. They are still going ahead
with the transition, but delaying it’s execution by a couple of weeks. Also,
they still have not shared anything on their new account activity API. So, it
is likely that all third party twitter clients will be completely broken.

Btw, even though there were over 10k tweets containing #BreakingMyTwitter,
their website reports several other hashtags trending with no mention to
#BreakingMyTwitter at all. Scrubbing, anyone?

SO far, the story has been carried by Tom’s Hardware, Cnet and even Cyber
Times. Still, the twitter executives refuse to budge on their position. Btw,
this will also lock out many blind users of twitter.

Thanks for the info, Cristobal. I just looked at the article, and Twitter is

their position, which is great.

After totally killing Twitter for Mac, Twitter’s next move appears to be taking
some seriously useful features out of third-party Twitter clients: push
notifications and streaming. Losing the ability to receive notifications and
update timelines as new tweets arrive would significantly limit apps like
Tweetbot and Twitterrific which serve the Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Hi All,

I have a voice in Voice Over named, Fred, that I can't get deleted. This voice
is of absutely no use to me since I'll never use it. I don't get any delete or
remove options, & I'm assuming it's a system voice that can't be removed. Is
my assumption correct? If what I'm assuming is wrong, would someone please
tell me how to remove this voice? All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much.
P.S.: If anyone is wondering why I want to remove this voice, I can't stand
it, it sounds like a drunk cartoon character, to me anyways! LOL

Which bluetooth keyboard did you get?
All keyboards are not identical.

A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my life by Jonathan Mosen,

2018-04-06 Thread Richard Turner

Greetings,
I decided to use text selection and select all before VoiceOver locked up, then
copy and paste Mark's message into Writer, then it read well.
So, I copied it back out of Writer and am pasting it below. Hopefully, whatever
was causing the problem is gone.
Here is Mark's entire message:
Hello Everyone,

I am posting the following article because it references an iOS app.

Mark

A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my
life
by Jonathan Mosen, Posted on 03/04/2018

Introduction
Recently, I was pleased to attend the CSUN assistive technology conference.
I've had the privilege of going to 10 of these before, but it has been a few
years since I was there last.
When you're involved with an industry, you tend to watch developments so
closely that changes usually seem incremental. But occasionally, something
new comes along that is so game changing, it stops you in your tracks. For
me, San Diego-based Aira is one such technology. I am late to this party.
Aira has been rolling out for some time in the United States. And indeed, we
covered Aira in an edition of The Blind Side Podcast last year. But since
mentioning my Aira experience to people via outlet such as my Internet radio
show, The Mosen Explosion, I've learned that not everyone yet fully
understands what the service is or how it works. For those not familiar with
Aira, or who would like to read someone else's impressions of it, read on.
What is Aira
According to the company's website,
Aira is today's fastest growing assistive community. One tap of a button
instantly connects you with a sighted professional agent who delivers visual
assistance anytime and anywhere.
Here's what that means in practice. At present, Aira is a smart phone app,
available for iOS and Android. Since Aira is a service for blind people,
it's no surprise that the app is exemplary in terms of its accessibility.
And in iOS, it even sports Siri integration.
Using the app, you can connect via video, much like a FaceTime call, with
agents who can provide you with visual information. Audio quality is
excellent, far clearer than a standard cell phone connection. Essentially,
an Aira agent can tell you anything at all that a pair of functioning eyes
can see, plus perform a range of tasks pertaining to that information.
You can acquire the visual information using your smart phone's camera, or,
when you become a subscriber to the Aira service (Aira calls its customers
"explorers") you receive a pair of smart glasses. These are included as part
of your subscription, so there's no hardware cost upfront.
The service is available officially in the United States at present, where
Aira has an arrangement with AT Aira explorers receive an AT MiFi
device, allowing them to use the service on the go without the data consumed
by the video connection eating up a customer's own cellular plan. If you
have a cellular plan equipped with the personal hotspot feature, you are
free to pair your Aira glasses with your phone using that method. For those
with large data plans, this may be attractive because there is one less
device to keep track of, carry, and charge. The downside, other than the
data consumption, is that a video connection to Aira for a long time may
cause significant battery drain on your smart phone.
When you're at home, work, or anywhere that Wi-Fi is available that doesn't
require web-based authentication, you can pair your Aira glasses to that
network. As far as I have been able to ascertain, 5 GHZ Wi-Fi isn't
supported at present.
Because of the need for high quality video, the glasses pair via Wi-Fi, and
not Bluetooth. The glasses are associated with your Aira account. This is
useful if, like in Bonnie's and my house, you're sharing your minutes as a
couple. More on that later.
The upshot of all of this is that for 18 hours of every day, professional,
well-trained sighted assistance is just a few taps or a Siri command away.
Describing it like this makes it sound kind of cool. But I want to explain
the impact that Aira has had on our lives in the brief time we have had it,
to illustrate that, at least for some of us, this technology is more than
just pretty cool, it's life-changing.
My first Aira experience
If you've been reading this blog or listening to The Blind Side Podcast over
the years, you will know that in recent times I have come out as having a
hearing impairment. I love going to these big conferences because I get to
catch up with old friends and make new ones, as well as see the latest and
greatest technology. I hate going to these big conferences because often, I
find myself in difficult audio environments. It can be very noisy. Hotel
lobbies and restaurants are often exceedingly crowded, with high ceilings
causing noise to bounce everywhere. The environment is difficult and tiring,
but I keep going and doing the best I can, because the alternative is to sit
at home and rust away, and I'm certainly not going to do that.

Yes, when I tried to perform a continuous reading command, I lost speech. The
only way I could read it, and I haven’t finished it yet, is to continually
swipe through the article. Don’t know why this occurred.

Hi, Kathy,

I also had trouble reading Jonahan’s article. It seemed that the speech didn’t
work for me. I just got clicks that we get in VoiceOver, but no speech. I was
very anxious to read this article because I use AIRA myself.

Thanks for the info, Cristobal. I just looked at the article, and Twitter is
now saying they won't remove the current funcitonality until 90 days after the

There is a way if you want to do it on your iOS device. Go to settings, then
tap on your name. it should take you to your iCloud settings. Scroll down to
name, phone number, emails. Double tap. Flick until you hear the edit button,
then select it. You want to scroll past all of your emails and phone numbers.
There should be an add button. It will bring up an alert asking if you want to
add an email address or a phone number, hit email. Type in the email address
you want to add, and hit next. Once that’s done, you might have to hit the edit
button again. After that, find your old Apple ID email, swipe down until you
hear delete. Once you double tap, it will bring a popup that asks you to type
in a new email address that you’ve just added. Type in the verification code
that you were sent.

Requesting Enhancements to Native Weather App

2018-04-06 Thread Bill Gallik
In the past, I’ve posted several messages to this list asking if anyone could
suggest a weather app that would include some basic information displayed with
the icon. Apparently, there is no such app out there so my next approach is to
request an enhancement to the native Weather app that would include basic info
much like the Calendar app includes the date in the icon and the Clock app
includes the time with the icon.

My question to this list is this; does Apple provide a web site where such
enhancement suggestions might be offered?

This would not be a “Bug Report” so I’d prefer to present this to Apple as an
enhanced feature.

Thank You!

If you've changed a new iPhone X, then you don't want to lose any data like

data loss can take place at anywhere or anytime, so protect the content on

Hi All,

Below is a question that was posted to a Jaws users list, & I was wondering
if anyone on this list could help this person out?

From: Shannon
Hi all,
I didn’t get a response about this and I wondered if it was because the
subject line was not very good.

I am looking for a program that I can use with either jaws 18 or jaws 2018
to transfer text messages from my iPhone to my computer.

ITunes (which is anything but useful) will make a backup but they are
encrypted and you can’t get to them.

I want to be able to make a back up that I can read on the computer. I need
to save a lot of them they are kind of important to me.

Anyone know of a program that works to do this?

Thanks Shannon

All advice will be greatly appreciated.

A review of Aira. What it is, how it works, and the ways it has changed my life, Mosen Consulting

2018-04-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting the following article because it references an iOS app.

One smart thing that Aira has done is to start rolling out a concept called
"site access". With appropriate sponsorship, or perhaps at times where there
will be many potential customers in one place, Aira can enable free access
to a location or even the entire city through their smart city project.

API changes will break Tweetbot and Twitteriffic alerts and streaming, Twitter not yet sharing new solution ahead of June deadline | 9to5Mac

2018-04-06 Thread Cristóbal
This . . . would really suck.

After totally killing Twitter for Mac, Twitter’s next move appears to be
taking some seriously useful features out of third-party Twitter clients:
push

notifications and streaming. Losing the ability to receive notifications and
update timelines as new tweets arrive would significantly limit apps like
Tweetbot and Twitterrific which serve the Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Hi Jen,

There's an app calledQuotes Folder by Nestor Borgo that has a big collection of
quotes. You can set it to send you a random one each day as a push notification.

Best,

RE: Please Join Me in Requesting That the Yelp for iOS Category List View Bug Be Resolved

2018-04-06 Thread Cristóbal
Let me ask. For the longest, I'd posted app reviews through my iPhone. However,
the other day, I wanted to leave a more detailed description and figured I'd
try doing it through iTunes since it involved longer typing. I hadn't done it
in forever and with the new iTunes changes, I really couldn't find an easy way
per say to search for apps to leave review. I was able to get into my account
and see a list of apps I had previously left reviews for, but not really for
anything I hadn't yet reviewed or that may be on a secondary page.
Is there in fact an easy way to search for apps and leave an app review in
iTunes? I'm pretty certain I'm on V 12/7.x or something. That or can one leave
a review through the browser bypassing iTunes all together?
Thanks,

Hello All,

I recently posted the following Yelp for iOS review in the App Store regarding
a new category list view bug that occurs with or without VoiceOver enabled..

I hope you will add your voice to this request for help by using any or all of
it in your feedback to Yelp either on the App Store or via Twitter at:

Thank you,

[BEGIN FEEDBACK]:

Subject: Cannot Get the More Button, that Leads to Category View to be
Displayed

Hello,

In the latest version of this app, when location services are enabled, the More
button (see attached photo on Twitter), that is supposed to be listed as the
last icon in the group of icons near the top of the display, in the Nearby
Area, is not showing. Unlike the More tab, located at the bottom of the
display, the button in question allows the user to see a complete list of
various categories from which to choose.

With location services enabled, I have been able to get the More icon to be
displayed on my iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon Wireless). However, I cannot get it to
be displayed on my 6 Plus (Verizon Wireless), my 6 S Plus (Sprint), or my
8 Plus (AT Wireless) phones. All of my devices are running iOS 11.3.

Currently, the only way I can get the More icon to be consistently displayed is
to uninstall the app from my phone, reboot the phone, reinstall the app, and
electing to not allow location services. Then, and only then, does the More
iCon appear in its expected location. The problem is that as soon as I enable
location services, the icon disappears.

This is an extremely annoying bug that I hope will be resolved as soon as
possible.

Thank you,

You can look through categories, but we have found that all the items
that should be listed are not always there. We have settled on going to
Sams.com and doing things like purchasing or setting up pickups that way.
It is pretty bad when you are looking up cheese and the app tells you that
cheese can not be found, both on a search and in the category. But, when
you use the web, there are literally hundreds of different kinds of cheese
products.

I got the sams app. we didn't get the scan and go. We'd like too
pick out the products on the app to be able to submit to pick up at the
store. One of the sales associate showed us how to shop online with the
shopping cart, and that we could submit the orders of the products to be
picked up at the store. Is this the best way or what way would be the right
way to get this done. Also as she was showing us, she said to search for the

I am not sure if you are talking about the Sam's app or the scan
and go. The scan and go app allows you to scan your items while shopping.
You can then check out on your phone. I use it all the time.
The Sam's app is for shopping online and also finding in store
availability of items.
