I believe there is a free online version, which of course uses data.
Otherwise, on iOS, the paid version downloads the maps to your device. You can
download the map of Canada separately from the US map. I believe the map of
Canada is about 1 or 1.2 gb, where as the US map is close to 3 gb.

Subject: Nearby Explorer

Hi,

I was just wondering if there is any way to try out Nearby Explorer without
buying it outright immediately. I am not asking for a very extensive trial
period, for me even a 1-day trial would be enough to figure out if I actually
like the interface and how it presents information. I have used the Seeing Eye
GPS app, but I just realized not that long ago that the 3-year subscription I
had bought expired last January. My situation is that I don’t need such a
dedicated GPS app very often, I live in a small town and have a dog. It’s
extremely rare that I need it here. Mostly where I have used it was during
trips to Vancouver, Calgary or other places so it’s one of those things, don’t
need it often but when I need it it’s nice to havde.
Nearby Explorer is of course a lot less expensive when it comes to an outright
purchase, but I have heard from some people that the UI is a bit clunky and
complicated so it would be nice to be able to try it out. Feedback from people
who love it will probably downplay any negative aspects of the app and then of
course different users will feel differently about how things are done in this
app.

Sieghard

There is a version of the Sendero app designed for the UK. The best kind of
headphones for GPS are bone conduction headphones, the most popular ones are

Re: Question about Tables in Contacts.

2018-08-26 Thread Donna
Hi Bill

No offense taken.  You are correct. I suggested that Carolyn touch & flick in
the same place, along the right edge of the phone, because she was having
trouble activating the table index picker. If Carolyn had just asked how to
advance faster through her contacts besides just swiping through each contact I
would have instructed her to do as you suggested. Also I saw a message or two
that instructed her to add tables to the rotor. To advance quickly through
contacts adding Tables to the rotor isn’t necessary.

Re: Question about Tables in Contacts.

2018-08-26 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
I certainly do not mean to be contrary, but I have to comment on a minute
detail that Donna mentioned in her answer. Certainly no disrespect meant here,
but I do believe the point I’m going to make here is quite important.

Once you locate any control you want to activate with VoiceOver in play, you
can tap anywhere on the screen to activate that control. This is the case
whether the control element be a button, a specific letter on the virtual
keyboard, an app, a pop-up list or anything that will be “activated” by
deploying the “double tap.”

The reason I mention this is because I found using the “touch screen interface”
on the iPhone (and iPad) to much more convenient, rather than concentrating on
the location of the control I just double tap without any concern where
specifically tap and the task I want to accomplish is either done or the
pertinent dialog is opened. So, for the context of this thread, once VoiceOver
has identified “Table Index,” you can single-finger flick down (or up) anywhere
on the screen and you will find yourself going through the list of letter
headings.

The other significant advantage of this is that, if you want to activate
something without hearing all the extraneous information read vy VoiceOver
(playing music, selecting an audio stream, etc.) once you’ve focussed on the
“Play Button” you can turn off speech, double tap anywhere on the screen and
the item will be activated. I find this particularly useful when dealing with
the various audio streaming apps.

BTW: I do apologize for the verboseness of this message.

RE: Streaming audio and video through Safari

2018-08-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can always just close the tab in Safari where you were listening to the
video or audio tutorial, this should prevent it from doing this.
You can close tabs in one of three ways:
1. Find the “tabs” tab at the bottom right of the Safari app when it is open.
2. Double tap on it
3. review the open tabs on the screen, swipe up or down to “Close Tab” on the
first one and double tap to close it. Note that just as in the app switcher,
the rotor action stays on “Close Tab” so if yu want to close another yu can
just double tap on it.

Second method:
1. Find the “tabs” tab at the bottom right of the Safari app when it is open.
2. Double tap and hold on this button/tab and a message pops up asking if yu
want to close all open tabs, it will tell you the number of open tabs, e.g. “Do
you want to close all 8 tabs.”

Third method:
1. Find the “tabs” tab at the bottom right of the Safari app when it is open.
2. Almost the same as the second method, if your iPhone supports 3D Touch you
can do a hard press on the tabs button instead of a double tap and hold and the
same prompt comes up asking you to close all tabs.

Subject: Streaming audio and video through Safari

Hello list.

I have been playing around a bit more with Safari with some success out of
necessity, as my home Wi-Fi has been down the last couple weeks due to a fried
modem.

I have gotten pretty good at the basic navigation, to the point where I could
stream audio and video files.I streamed an audio file, it happened to be an NFB
presidential release, but when I went back into Safari this morning, it started
playing again from the start automatically. This wasn’t what I wanted, as I
was done with it, as I was fully intending to go somewhere else. Was there
some command I should have executed to stop this when I was done with the file?

I went to the WWDC video at the Apple site, which was my next destination, and
played that video. Having had the other experience, I am a bit afraid that
will start playing again when I go back to Safari, since that’s the last place
I was. Again I probably don’t want that.

On another related matter, it would be interesting to know the difference in
size between audio and video files for perspective. I ask because I have had
to use my cellular network the last couple weeks because of that modem issue.
The video gobbled up so much data I will be charged for purchasing extra data.
It was a mistake to do this project now, even though WWDC was interesting
learning, as it still would have been there when I get my Wi-Fi back up.

White Noise app

2018-08-26 Thread Bill Outman
Hello.

I recently down loaded the free version of the White Noise app from
Kitefaster that was discussed about a year ago on this list. It now shows
up on the home page as White Noise, which is an improvement, I believe.

I think this will be a valuable addition once I get it going, as I am
finding a need for creating environmental ambience.

I have a few questions about the app.

When I first open the app, I find the mechanical sounds, I find ten of them,
and fan is selected, since I haven't changed the default selection.

I come to the sounds from nature, of which there are thirteen. Then come
the colored noises, white, pink and brown. Then I come to the nature sounds
pack upgrade, I believe there are 25 as I swipe right. Do I pay for these
individually or as a group, and how much does it cost? Is that how II
upgrade to the fully paid version, and how much is that? I might want to
have that as a goal.

Then I come to the play button, and then a button that is unmarked. The
next swipe right gives me the current selection. I come to the sounds tab,
which is the tab selected, and VoiceOver reports there are three tabs. Then
there are the controls and settings tabs, which I haven't been brave enough
to venture into yet.

What else do I need to know to get started with this app?

Streaming audio and video through Safari

2018-08-26 Thread Bill Outman
Hello list.

I have been playing around a bit more with Safari with some success out of
necessity, as my home Wi-Fi has been down the last couple weeks due to a
fried modem.

I have gotten pretty good at the basic navigation, to the point where I
could stream audio and video files.I streamed an audio file, it happened to
be an NFB presidential release, but when I went back into Safari this
morning, it started playing again from the start automatically. This wasn't
what I wanted, as I was done with it, as I was fully intending to go
somewhere else. Was there some command I should have executed to stop this
when I was done with the file?

I went to the WWDC video at the Apple site, which was my next destination,
and played that video. Having had the other experience, I am a bit afraid
that will start playing again when I go back to Safari, since that's the
last place I was. Again I probably don't want that.

On another related matter, it would be interesting to know the difference in
size between audio and video files for perspective. I ask because I have
had to use my cellular network the last couple weeks because of that modem
issue. The video gobbled up so much data I will be charged for purchasing
extra data. It was a mistake to do this project now, even though WWDC was
interesting learning, as it still would have been there when I get my Wi-Fi
back up.

Using google's email clients on the IOS platform

2018-08-26 Thread Daniel McGee

Hello all

A bit of a weird question but I'm curious to know.

For those who use gmail as there email of choice, what are the reasons, if any
that you would use the gmail and inbox apps on IOS? Rather than the default
Apple mail app?

Hi,

I apologize if you have already gotten the answer to your question..
First, open the contacts or phone app. Tap on contacts, the contacts tab is the
middle tab along the bottom in the phone app. Turn the rotor to characters,
then touch in the middle very close to the right side of the phone. Voiceover
will say “table index adjustible” You cando 1 of 2 things: 1. Where you touched
the phone along the right & voiceover spoke table index adjustable, flick up or
down to advance to the letter group of contacts you want. Once to the letter
swipe left to right or right to left until you get to the desired contact name.
Tap on the name to open to the contacts info. Or you can touch very close to
the right edge of the phone, voiceover will say table index adjustable. Turn
the rotor to”adjust value” then flick up or down to scroll through the
contacts. Swipe to the desired contact, then tap on the contact name to open
the contacts info.

Hope this makes sense. Im a bit sleep deprived. That subject though is for a
later topic.
