As far as I know it is accessible. The app is a little bit of a pain
but it's new so I am sure those issues will be sorted.

Yeah, I'm really not feeling this face ID stuff. Oh well...

Hi,

When the code screen comes up, doing the home gesture usually works fine for
me. Make sure you're holding your phone at least a foot away from your face
when you scan.

Best,

it off and wake the iPhone again to try again.
After a search I have learned sighted users can initiate a second scan
with a finger flick from a bottom corner upwards. This doesn’t work with
Voice Over. No other finger flick seems to do the trick for that matter.
I have asked Apple Accessibility about this, but they never answer me
 unfortunately.
Does anyone here know if there is a way to scan again with Voice Over?

 Thanks.

Re: Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-17 Thread Jim Fettgather

I have two home pods, and I am so glad I made the purchase!
They are fantastic, they can fill an entire room with incredibly rich,
beautiful stereo sound.
Incredible bass, they can be unbelievably loud if you are not careful, I
have mine at 50% and that is plenty loud!
And of course, they can make phone calls and send text messages as well,
they are among the best purchases I have ever made.

You can move them around easily if you wish, they are great!

Hi all,
This coming Black Friday, there’s going to be a serious discount on the
HomePod speaker from Apple at Best Buy. I am thinking about getting a pair
of those in an effort for overall down sizing. I have currently a nice
stereo set up, but it’s rather old, although the speakers are still
wonderful. I’m just curious what peoples impressions are of the HomePod,
especially as a stereo pair in a moderate sized living room, as well as how
it works otherwise. Siri, phone calls, etc.

iOS app and now while browsing FB on my PC with Firefox and Chrome, but it
looks like VoiceOver and Jaws at least are reading the included text in
image postings. I know one could always add the alt text, but at least for
the few memes and pictures my friend’s and family are posting, I don’t have
to do anything special. The text is simply being read. In iOS it was kind of
a hassle since you had to first save the picture to your camera roll then
navigate to the photos app then use the Seeing AI app to recognize text only
to find out that the picture you saved was just of someone’s dog with the
word woof on it or something like that. Jaws was way more hit and miss if
you were lucky.

Is anyone else seeing this as the saying goes or have I been in the dark and
this is simply old news?

Is there a way to adjust the volume on Air Pods or do they just work off the

Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-17 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
This coming Black Friday, there’s going to be a serious discount on the HomePod
speaker from Apple at Best Buy. I am thinking about getting a pair of those in
an effort for overall down sizing. I have currently a nice stereo set up, but
it’s rather old, although the speakers are still wonderful. I’m just curious
what peoples impressions are of the HomePod, especially as a stereo pair in a
moderate sized living room, as well as how it works otherwise. Siri, phone
calls, etc.

Doesn't seem to work here. When the code screen pops up, you cannot scan again
and have to put in your code to enable face id again.

Hi Maria,

I often have the iPhone next to me on the table when I wake it with a tap on
the screen and then tilt it a bit towards my face. It mostly unlocks.
Holding the phone shortly away from your face after a failed scan and then beck
again sometimes works, but not always.

Re: Face ID: how to initiate second scan with Voice Over?

2018-11-17 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi Maria,

I hold the phone in different positions to scan or the scan is already
completed when I am moving the phone. Mostly the first scan goes well, but now
and then it doesn’t and would I like to be able to rescan without having to
lock and unlock.
And if sighted users can do this, why we not.

Face ID: how to initiate second scan with Voice Over?

2018-11-17 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi

Most of the time the Face ID works pretty well on my iPhone XS, but now and
then it fails to recognize me. I believe since iOS 12, the times the scan tries
is only once. After that you have to put in your code or switch it off and wake
the iPhone again to try again.
After a search I have learned sighted users can initiate a second scan with a
finger flick from a bottom corner upwards. This doesn’t work with Voice Over.
No other finger flick seems to do the trick for that matter.
I have asked Apple Accessibility about this, but they never answer me
unfortunately.
Does anyone here know if there is a way to scan again with Voice Over?

Thanks.

Ronald

RE: Siri Constantly Interrupting

2018-11-17 Thread Richard Turner
Deidre is correct.
Turn off Hey Siri and see if the problem stops.
If it does, then if you are listening to an audio book, something is triggering
Hey Siri, which could be anything that sounds remotely like Hey Siri.
If it doesn't, then you need to deal with Apple as something is most definitely
wrong with your phone.

there are two functions for Siri in settings. you want to turn OK Siri off or
if you've got google loaded up turn off OK Google. Both lay in wait in the
background to pick up your speech at a distance as if you might want to issue a
command at a distance. So it's hearing you or are you on your computer or
something else going on. since you're not really asking the question directly
it doesn't have any clue what you're saying which must be why the poor thing
keeps saying it doesn't understand what you mean. Turn off OK Siri or turn off
OK google depending on which you've got switched on.

RE: Siri Constantly Interrupting

2018-11-17 Thread Richard Turner
Do you have Hey Siri enabled?
What device is it?
Which iOS version?

I've never seen this with any of my devices, or any of my client's devices.
But knowing more about your device might help trouble shoot this.

Siri constantly interrupts me and says sorry but can't hear me; I'm not
invoking Siri. Short of turning Siri off, what else can I do? It's impossible
to complete any task.

In Canada it is $199.99 Canadian and in the US $145.35 US, at the current

Re: new accessible swimming tracker device!

2018-11-17 Thread goshawk on horseback
it was mainly for that live directions feedback whilst in open water that I
purchased it, as open water swimming is what I really love to do. with winter
setting in however, I don't know when I will get a good opportunity to give it
a good open water field test.
not sure if it does those other bits you mentioned, as I purchased it for open
water use, but it does seem to have some training program options, so there is
a possibility that those may give that sort of info. it is only a possibility,
as I think this device is purely designed to concentrate on giving specifics on
swimming, rather than on general fitness.

This does sound interesting, would be great if you could provide a review if
you buy it and after you have used it for a bit.

I'd love to know how well the open water directions work for a blind person.
It says it would tell you, for example, to turn to 2 o'clock once you reach a
certain spot if you pre-program a route and I'd love to know if it would give
you ongoing corrections if you drift off-course.

One thing I did not read about and which is nice with the Apple Watch is
whether you get heart rate and calories used. I know the heart rate with the
Apple Watch is not as accurate during a swim because of all the water, but
nonetheless it's nice to get a sense.

have recently come across this new device.
am very excited about it myself, as it is specifically designed to speak to
you, rather than be looked at, so has audio feedback, and proper buttons. I
have previously been using the apple watch as a swimming tracker, but I really
do think this new device is going to do a much better job, with better audio
feedback, and at a very considerably lower cost.

the apps for iPhone and android, both seem to be very accessible from the
outset, but haven't really gone in to all there features yet.
there are also some good videos on the support page, which do give quite a

the apps, some of there usefulness does get a bit lost.

Re: Sending an iPhone Text Message to a Short Code Address

2018-11-17 Thread Rich DeSteno
Where do I check to see if SMS is on?  I did not find it when looking
through Settings.

Have you checked that Send As SMS on? That is how you text to a non-iPhone
device. My guess is that these companies are not using an iPhone. I've texted
to such numbers with my iPhone.

Many advertisers now offer a free sample or information if you text a certain

new accessible swimming tracker device!

2018-11-17 Thread goshawk on horseback
have recently come across this new device.
am very excited about it myself, as it is specifically designed to speak to
you, rather than be looked at, so has audio feedback, and proper buttons. I
have previously been using the apple watch as a swimming tracker, but I really
do think this new device is going to do a much better job, with better audio
feedback, and at a very considerably lower cost.
the apps for iPhone and android, both seem to be very accessible from the
outset, but haven't really gone in to all there features yet.
there are also some good videos on the support page, which do give quite a bit
of useful info, although as they feature sighted people doing things with the
apps, some of there usefulness does get a bit lost.
the link for this new device is:
