Chermeen, you can move emails to a folder in the iOS Mail app as well.
I used Outlook for iOS for a while, but I still prefer the native Mail app. It
is very accessible, though, at least it was when I tried it a year or so ago.

Hi Jen and all,

I updated my iPhone that was running beta software to 12.1.1, and Siri
shortcuts are now working fine. So I would suggest trying that.

Hello List:
After meeting Sieghard a few years ago on this list and talking with him by
phone my wife and I finally got to meet him in toronto earlier this week.
My opinion of Sieghard was already a tall one because of his tremendous
contribution to this list and his broad business and technical knowledge while
chatting with him by phone.
Let’s just say we had an enthusiastic lunch with him and his lovely Philippino
wife Jackie which all enhanced our friendship.
I also agree that having my IPhone 8 for a week now, it is very snappy and
smooth.
I would love to hear anyone’s case suggestions for the Iphone 8 and where you
ordered them from.

As a Canadian from Newfoundland I came away from the show today feeling very
proud of our Country and how Gander made hosting folks from many corners of the
world a fun time.
I’m sure some of those folks hadn’t heard or seen anyone from Africa previously
to that experience. I bet it broadened their minds on how all folks can be the
same when a crises begins.
We absolutely loved the show and the music was incredible.

Thanks moderator for allowing us to inject a little personal human content into
the list and now our friendship will forge ahead because of this list.

Best Regards….Reg

Subject: First thoughts on our new iPhone 8

Hi,

After returning from a week in Toronto where my wife and I attended a trade
fare and visited with a friend of mine for a few days we returned last night
and found our new iPhone 8's which arrived during our absence.
Using my iPhone 6S Plus to set up the iPhone 8 worked flawlessly, I was able to
scan the code and all the settings including Wi-Fi password and the credit
cards I had set up for Apple Pay got transferred. I only had to verify the
cards by entering each card's 3-digit card verification code.
Apart from that I did choose to set up as a new phone and spend about 6 hours
downloading all my apps, putting them in the order I want, setting up folders
and what is more, signing into all my home automation apps, my main bank app,
the bank apps for my Visa and Mastercard, PayPal business, Facebook, Google,
Audible including re-downloading my books and all the stuff I use.
I must say setting up as a new phone if you are a fairly heavy user of the
iPhone with all these type of apps is definitely a bit of a pain, but I usually
find it is worth it with a brand-new phone.
We also received the Mophie and Belkin wireless charging pads I ordered on
Black Friday, my wife likes the Mophie one and I must say I probably would
prefer it as well, but I'm not sure if I will send the Belkin back. The Mophie
is quite noticeably smaller in diameter, has a bit of a softer coating and it
comes with a wall charger and uses a Micro USB cable.
The Belkin uses a proprietary AC adapter so should it for some reason fail it
would be a lot harder to replace than a Micro USB cable.
I also ordered two more less expensive wireless chargers from Amazon, one is a
stand, I'll see how they work. Both the Belkin and Mophie work with a basic
case on and seem to e not super picky as to how you put the phone on it as long
as it is reasonably centred.
Unfortunately we had a number of 6S cases and none of them work for the iPhone
8. They fit just fine, but the camera lens on the iPhone 6S is higher up in the
corner of the phone and all the cases we have half cover the camera lens of the
iPhone 8.
Apart from this the phones are very snappy and definitely feel a bit more
responsive than my wife's 6S and my 6S Plus, the virtual home button takes a
little bit of getting used to, but it's fine and I like the fact that these
phones are much more waterproof than my 6S Plus.

Thanks, Reg and Kathy, for meeting us for lunch, you are lucky, Reg, my wife
really wanted to run off with your new black lab.
I hope you enjoy the show today, for reference, this refers to Reg Sullivan who
is on this list, going to see the musical Come from Away together with his wife
today. Apart from my friend driving us to Niagara Falls, my wife and I went to
see this musical on Sunday and if anybody has a chance to go I can only
recommend it, it's an awesome show. The topic is 9 11, but not the New Yor

population of a little over 9,000 and during this attack on

2018-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fanus,

I think you mistake an external battery or battery case for what I referred to
as a wireless charging pad.
What I described is simply a round disk which sort of looks like a slightly
thicker coaster like what you would use on a table to put your glass on it.
Said pad is plugged into a wall outlet via the provided cable and/or adapter or
some simply use any Micro USB cable and 5 Watt wall plug. You then put your
iPhone on top of this round disk/pad and it will charge wirelessly, i.e. you no
longer plug in the Lightning cable. Of course this has to be an iPhone 8 or
above since the iPhone 8 was the first one to support wireless charging, at
least I think it was and that the iPhone 7 still has to be plugged in. You can
of course also plug the iPhone 8 or any of the new 10 models in using the
familiar Lightning cable, but since they don't have a 3.5mm headphone jack any
more, using a wireless charging pad is one easy way to deal with the problem of
using your phone with a wired headset and charging it at the same time. The
phone charges as it lies on the pad and it leaves the Lightning port free for
the headset. Alternatively you could buy a splitter which plugs into the
Lightning port and then has two Lightning ends, one to plug in the charge cable
and one to plug in a headset. They also exist with one Lightning end for the
charge cable and one 3.5mm jack for a standard headphone. However, unless you
buy a no-name splitter on Amazon the Belkin models cost $40 or something like
that and you can buy a nice wireless charging pad for that.

Hello Sieghard
While you were mentioning the charging pads my problem has always been that I
could not know the charge state of external battery packs. Has the Mophie or
Balkin some sort of indication for a blind person? Maybe the problem is that I
do not know how to use these devices properly in respect of charging but the
few I ttried did not have a long lifespan.

I have the Air Pods and regret having purchased them. They fit poorly and even

  Hi Keith,

It says in the article as follows:

Kuo earlier this year predicted Apple will release a new version of the
AirPods with “wireless charging support” and upgraded Bluetooth in the first
quarter of 2019. Kuo says 2020 will see an even more improved model of AirPods.

What exactly the possible 2019 version will bring and whether it will come
out in the first 3 or 4 months of the year as some seem to think or not until
the September iPhone event is anybody's guess. I assume that the price for any
new version of Airpods will stay roughly the same at around $160 US and $220
Canadian and one can probably pick up the earlier model for a bit of a deal for
a while after a new one comes out and until all the older ones are sold. I also
think that if we start to see the current Airpods on sale at places like Best
Buy, Target etc. then maybe a new one will be close. As I said, I'm in no
particular hurry, I've gotten along this long without I can manage for another
6 or 8 months or a year or a year and a half. I am not a huge fan of Bluetooth
so it really needs to be a good update before Apple gets my money for those. I
totally like the idea of the Airpods but I don't yet like the
implementation/design.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

  Thanks, Sieghard.

To my reading, it sounds like you may need to wait until into 2020 before the
upgraded version of Air Pods is released. Mostly updated Bluetooth and possibly
wireless charing in 2019.

I didn’t see any mention of pricing. Was you comment about price based on
current price? I’m guessing newer AirPods will be more expensive, but by how
much is the question.

  Hi,

Just came across this article on the iPhoneInCanada.com site. This has been
reported on Mac Rumors by Ming-Chi Kuo, the Apple analyst from TF Securities
whose "rumors" come true more often than not.

I am glad I have held off so far because even if I buy Apple Airpods it
sounds like waiting a bit longer may reward you with a newer, more advanced
model. Whatever Amazon and Google may come up with sounds like won't come to
market until the second half of 2019 so maybe I'll even wait until then to see,
after all, given the price of these little guys it is not something you want to
buy and then regret a few month later. The sales predictions in that article
are astounding. Here is the link to the article:

Google, Amazon Likely Working on AirPods Competitor: Ming-Chi Kuo

Yes, I tried the 3 options regarding how much feedback one gets and while I
don't find the differences to be huge I settled on the third which seems to
provide the strongest vibration.
I ran into the first issue today which I only call an issue and which really
isn't one.
I went to drop off a couple of cash deposits from my business today at my bank,
but I had taken my backup headset out of my pack because I didn't need it for
my trip and when I stood in front of the bank machine I realized this and of
course now with my iPhone 8 I only had the Lightning headset. I haven't bought
an adapter yet but may do so just for such situations. I was there about half
an hour before the bank opened, but I live in a small town so I knocked on the
door and one of the tellers promptly came out and after I told her what my
problem was I gave her the three envelopes and she said she'd deposit them. I
asked her if she wanted my account number, but she just said that since they
know who I am that was not necessary.

stand, I'll see how they work.

The topic is 9 11, but not the New Yor
tragedy, this is about the town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada which has a
population of a little over 9,000 and during this attack on New York 38 large
planes were forced to land there and about 7,000 people had to be sheltered and
fed there for 3 days. It's a story of loss but also of incredible generosity,
resilience and love.

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: Printer For My iPhone8?

2018-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fazil,

It is hard to say, you simply have to go into an email or other document, find
where the print button is and try it out.
In an email do the following:
Open the email and find the "Reply" button at the bottom, double tap and then
swipe right a couple of times until you get to "Print", again double tap
Touch the screen somewhere in the middle and then find the button announced as
Printer, selected Printer, button" and double tap on it
If on the next screen your printer is listed all should be good, double tap on
it to select it, this will take you back to the first page where now instead of
the "select printer" button your printer is shown and the "Print" button will
no longer be greyed out
You can select how many copies you want to print on that page as well and also
whether you want to print double sided.

I would just try it, if your printer is not listed cancel this, press the
wireless button on your printer and then check again.
I don't think your printer has to be on your local WiFi network for this to
work, but mine is since I use it wirelessly with my laptop as well so maybe it
does. If so you may need sighted help to get it connected to your WiFi.

Sieghard

Hi, list.
I’ve just got Brother Hl-l2370DW Printer.
Right now it is connected to my PC via USB but it has wifi capability too. It
has a wifi button on the panel. Can I print from my iPhone?
If I push the wifi button, would that go online?
Thanks!

RE: New Apple Airpod are coming as well as Amazon and google competitors

2018-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am surprised at your statement of better sound since almost all reviews I
read praise how good they sound and having briefly tried them at an Apple Store
I tend to agree that for how tiny they are they do sound very good to me. I
also have no issues with the Earpods which are essentially the same size and
shape as the Airpods, falling out, but of course everybody's ears are
different. I whole-heartedly agree about the lack of volume control, for a
Bluetooth headset of such high price not to offer independent volume controls
is laughable and it alone is primarily the reason why I have not yet bought a
pair.

Well hopefully they are better than the first gen versions I have.
They fall out of my ears a lot of the time and I hate that there is no way to
change the volume from the headphones. Last but not least better sound would be
nice if possible.

2018-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

It says in the article as follows:

Kuo earlier this year predicted Apple will release a new version of the AirPods
with “wireless charging support” and upgraded Bluetooth in the first quarter of
2019. Kuo says 2020 will see an even more improved model of AirPods.

What exactly the possible 2019 version will bring and whether it will come out
in the first 3 or 4 months of the year as some seem to think or not until the
September iPhone event is anybody's guess. I assume that the price for any new
version of Airpods will stay roughly the same at around $160 US and $220
Canadian and one can probably pick up the earlier model for a bit of a deal for
a while after a new one comes out and until all the older ones are sold. I also
think that if we start to see the current Airpods on sale at places like Best
Buy, Target etc. then maybe a new one will be close. As I said, I'm in no
particular hurry, I've gotten along this long without I can manage for another
6 or 8 months or a year or a year and a half. I am not a huge fan of Bluetooth
so it really needs to be a good update before Apple gets my money for those. I
totally like the idea of the Airpods but I don't yet like the
implementation/design.

I am glad I have held off so far because even if I buy Apple Airpods it sounds
like waiting a bit longer may reward you with a newer, more advanced model.
Whatever Amazon and Google may come up with sounds like won't come to market
until the second half of 2019 so maybe I'll even wait until then to see, after
all, given the price of these little guys it is not something you want to buy
and then regret a few month later. The sales predictions in that article are
astounding. Here is the link to the article:

The Apple Watch ECG/EKG detected something strange about my heart rhythm, cNet

2018-12-06 Thread M. Taylor
The Apple Watch EKG detected something strange about my heart rhythm

The latest update, WatchOS 5.1.2, rolled out two new heart features that
could help warn users of life-threatening conditions.
By Vanessa Hand Orellana, December 6, 2018 6:01 AM PST

When I first started testing out the new EKG feature on the Apple Watch
Series 4 -- available Thursday via the free Watch OS 5.1.2 software upgrade
-- the last thing I expected was to find something abnormal with my heart
rhythm. But that's exactly what happened when I was cross-referencing the
Watch's readings with medical-grade EKG equipment at the doctor's office.
"We see on your Apple Watch the same early heartbeat that we see on the
EKG," said Dr. Gregory Marcus, professor of medicine and a cardiac
electrophysiologist at UCSF Medical Center as I sat on the hospital bed with
cables attached to my body and an Apple Watch Series 4 on my wrist.

The results from the Apple Watch EKG showed the same irregular beat as the
doctor's EKG.

"These early beats are very common . but they can lead to problems in the
long term. So we should talk a little bit more about that," he added.
Heart-rate tracking has always been a big part of the Apple Watch and
fitness trackers in general. But until now, it's mainly been used for
activity tracking and calorie counting.
With the update to Watch OS 5.1.2, heart rate will play a more important
role on the Apple Watch as we get access to the two new FDA-cleared features
that Apple announced at its September keynote. There's an abnormal heart
rhythm alert for all Apple Watches, except for the first-generation model,
and an electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) exclusive to the Series 4. Both of
which could help warn of potentially life threatening heart conditions.

Video: We tested the Apple Watch EKG against a hospital EKG
Measuring heart rate
Heart-rate tracking isn't new to wearables. Smartwatches and fitness
trackers have for years used LEDs and optical sensors on the back to measure
the changes in blood flow under the surface of the skin, aka your pulse.
When the heart beats, more blood gets pumped into the blood vessels
absorbing more light. Between beats when there's less blood, more light gets
reflected back into the receivers of the watch.

In 2017, the Apple Watch became proactive about how it used heart rate
information by adding the high heart rate notifications to the watch which
let users know when their heart spiked above a certain level and later added
the low heart rate notifications. These notifications had already been
helping users detect serious conditions.
But the heart rate only measures beats per minute, or the frequency of the
heart beat over time and not the patterns between each beat known as heart
rhythm.
"You can have a regular rhythm that is very fast or too slow . And
similarly, one can have an irregular rhythm that is of a normal rate, that
is too fast or too slow," said Dr. Marcus.
With the new Irregular rhythm notification, the Apple Watch uses the optical
sensor to measure heart rhythm and alert users when it detects an irregular
pattern that may be atrial fibrillation (aFib), a type of arrhythmia that
can increase your risk of stroke and other serious heart complications. This
feature will only work for adults over the age of 22 and won't help if
you've already been diagnosed with aFib.
EKG on the Apple Watch
To make a definitive diagnosis, a doctor needs more information than what
the pulse can provide.

"Sometimes those beats are so early that the heart hasn't had adequate time
to fill, even though electrically there may be an early beat that's
happening," said Dr. Marcus. "We would want to have an electrical
confirmation of a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation before we decide on
acting on that and not base it in general, on the pulse recording alone," he
added.

That's where the EKG comes in. An EKG uses electrodes to measure the
electrical activity that results from each expansion and contraction of the
heart. A hospital grade EKG generally consists of 10 electrodes placed on
different parts of your body. While the Apple Watch Series 4 has two: One
electrode on the back crystal and one electrode on the digital crown.

"This 12 lead EKG shows what's happening electrically in the heart from 12
different perspectives, or 12 different directions, whereas the Apple Watch
gives you that same electrical activity, but really in just one direction,"
Dr. Marcus explained.

As he was looking at his monitor, I opened the new EKG app on the Apple
Watch Series 4 to take my first EKG. I put my finger on the digital crown
and waited while the screen counted down 30 seconds. The Apple Watch
classifies your heart rhythm as either AFib, sinus rhythm or inconclusive.
My result: inconclusive.
The notification on the Apple Watch also said I should contact to my doctor
if I didn't feel well or if I continue to get the same result. Users can
share these results as a pdf with their doctors, but luckily

Mary,

Most likely we'll hear nothing about this, but a lot of SIRI commands do
require the cloud which also means Apple servers. How often has something
strange been going on with the App Store or SIRI or other services from other
companies which may simply have been a temporary glitch with their systems.

Re: Can't move apps on my iphone 7

2018-12-06 Thread Gordon
Sure, go to the app you want to move and flick up to edit mode. Once
you're in edit mode find the app on the screen again and flick up to
drag. When you double tap that you can move it anywhere you want. If you
want to move to a folder on a different page, find the page selector at
the bottom of the screen and to to where the folder is. once you find
the folder flick up for options for what you want to do. You'll see, add
to folder as one of the options as you keep flicking up. It's really
simple once you play around with it a little. To exit edit mode hit the
home button or do your home gesture if you have a newer phone without a
home button. Once you're in edit mode you can move several things
without having to exit and go back in.

Can't move apps on my iphone 7

2018-12-06 Thread Eve

Hi All,

I have an iPhone 7 with three pages of apps including the home screen.
On my last page, there is a folder that has 18 apps that I don't use on
a regular basis. How do I add to that folder when the apps I want to
remove are on the previous page? It's been a while since I've moved
anything, and the procedure to do so has changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Best Way to Transfer Music

2018-12-06 Thread Richard Turner
The only way to have them truly manageable on your phone is to use iTunes.
I cannot say where on a Mac to put them, but on Windows, you can either Add the
folders where they are to iTunes through the iTunes file menu, or you can copy
them from wherever they are into the Automatically add to iTunes folder buried
somewhere in the folder structure on your Mac.
If they are marked up correctly with song info, Artist, etc., they will be
sorted by iTunes very nicely.
This may be a time, if that isn't enough to get you started, to call Apple
Accessibility and have them talk you through the process.
HTH,
Richard

First, given the list of bugs, it is almost like they rebuilt the app.
I have some My Tuner Radio shortcuts working. I have one Pandora shortcut
working and one that doesn't. They all worked prior to this month.
So, maybe they will all work eventually, or not. It almost isn't worth it.

Mail, Safari (Web browser), TextEdit (similar to Windows' Notepad but with more

Re: Reading Kindle Books

2018-12-06 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Robert,

Using default settings, you don't have to change pages. The app switches pages
automatically when you get to the bottom of a page.

If for some reason this doesn't happen, go to VoiceOver settings, choose
Braille, and turn on automatic display panning.

Best,
Anna

Hi.  Well, Td bank just implemented it for our mail on our phones.  I am
pretty new at it but I find it pretty accessible.  I haven't done tones
with it yet but I like it so far.

Re: First thoughts on our new iPhone 8

2018-12-06 Thread Wayne Merritt
I have the Speck Products Candyshell case for my 8 Plus. They are
available on Amazon for between $15 and $28, depending on what kind
and color of case you get. They are plastic/rubber and do not have a
screen protector. I've been using these for a few years now and have
been quite pleased with their protection. If I were to drop my phone
face down on the ground then I don't know how the screen would hold
up, but you can also get some Tech Armer heavy duty glass screen
protectors for very cheap as well on Amazon for about $7 or $8.

I will do that. I’d suggest you proof read your Emails as you say in this one
you are on 11.1.1 not 12.1.1.

I confirmed it on my SE 128 with iOS 12.1.1..

Subject: join me - persisting contacts bug in ios 12.1.1

Hi folks

Please do report this bug when existing for you to accessibil...@apple.com

First, I really am on ios 11.1.1, the update went fine, I tested and rebooted
the phone and tested again.

The bug where you encounter a number that is not on your contacts list and
wanting to add it as a new contact still persists in ios 11.1.1 for at least
iphone 5s 64 GB.

Find such a number and add it as a new contact and try to fill out the form
fields such as first name and name. When taking the first name field you hear
the pok sound and nothing can be added to the field.

Workaround: go to the second field, name, dubbeltap it and fill it out, then
navigate to first name and you can then fill out this too and the problem is
solved but it is and remains a voiceover bug that must be reported to Apple.

Regards

Davy

Tid-bits from Blind Bargains

FYI:

13. Heathrow airport becomes the first Aira access location outside the United

Europe's largest airport now also has the distinction of being the first Aira

passengers traveling through Heathrow can now download the free aira app and
receive real-time assistance from a trained agent to go through security, find
gates, restaurants, rest rooms, and receive real-time updates on changes to
their flights.

Google is seeking feedback from accessibility developers regarding their

Re: voice dream reader question

2018-12-06 Thread Richard Turner

i had posted a note when 4.70 came out that it seems to be only newly
downloaded books that start from the beginning rather than from the notice. So,
if you are talking about books already in your library, then that is not a
problem. If you are talking about a book you just downloaded, then you should
contact support.
It would be nice if books already downloaded would do this, but I'm also not
surprised they don't. It isn't that hard to skip the notice, so it isn't a big
deal to me.

voice dream reader question

2018-12-06 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi all. My voice dream reader books from Bookshare don't read from the
beginning of the book. It still starts at Notice. I'm using an I phone 7
plus and 12.1.1. Any settings I need to change? I restarted my phone. I'm
afraid to reinstall because I may lose my library. Thanks.

Re: First thoughts on our new iPhone 8

2018-12-06 Thread Fanus
Hello Sieghard
While you were mentioning the charging pads my problem has always been that I
could not know the charge state of external battery packs. Has the Mophie or
Balkin some sort of indication for a blind person? Maybe the problem is that I
do not know how to use these devices properly in respect of charging but the
few I ttried did not have a long lifespan.

The topic is 9 11, but not the New Yor
tragedy, this is about the town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada which has a
population of a little over 9,000 and during this attack on New York 38 large
planes were forced to land there and about 7,000 people had to be sheltered and
fed there for 3 days. It's a story of loss but also of incredible generosity,
resilience and love.

Take care,

Sieghard
