I would leave background app refresh on for apps like Uber. That way, if you
go to the home screen after setting up a trip, you will still get updates. My
understanding is that if background app refresh is not on, you wouldn’t not be
able to receive updates in Uber about things such as when your ride will arrive
if you go out of the app. Somebody can correct me if I’m wrong.

You have to hit the done button before you can hit the add tracking button.

Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I think it has gotten pretty silly. the fact is, the IPhone has no home
button and is using face id. Some like it and some don't. No one is being

Hi Simon and All,
Wow, so you think someone should be shot! LOL! Smile! I think this face
id issue is well blown out of proportion. Some people are thinking they
have to move their head around and around to unlock their phone, this is not
the case at all. The only time someone will have to move their head around
is during the face id set up process , and then just look at the phone when
you want to unlock it. If you want to unlock the phone while in your
pocket, try lifting the phone out of your pocket, and look down at it, and
place it back in your pocket. Just a thought, so please don't shoot me,
just trying to help. I do have face id set up on my xr phone, and I did set
it up myself. The face id feature will walk you through the set up process,
meaning it will tell you to turn your head to the right or to the left, or
to look down, or to look at the screen etc. When I unlock my phone, I press
the power button, and look at the phone, and the majority of the time it
will unlock, but I've noticed if I don't look directly at the phone, it will
not unlock, and I tried that just to see if it would really unlock if I
wasn't looking directly at the phone. Now, it does annoy me rather I look
directly at the phone or not, and it will still ask me for my security code,
but from my understanding from Apple, this is how the face id feature is set
up, and the reason is for security purposes, in which I can appreciate, but
still annoying at the sametime though.

That was what I tried to do. It did not work. I flicked to the side and would
finally get to Delete, but that wouldn't work. I reset the phone, still no go.
Then someone mentioned rotor, that didn't work. Someone suggested flicking up,
which I did, which didn't work, but then I flicked down, and it did. I even
cleared all. I am so relieved. What a pain and an unnecessary problem, as far

2018-12-18 Thread Carolyn Arnold
Once I finally got them deleted, I could and did do that. I could not initially
delete - reset, rotor, nothing worked. Finally someone told me to flick up,
which did not work, but when I flicked down after that, I was at Delete, double
tapped, and it worked. I did the second one, then cleared all. What a relief.
Another guy on another list said that happened to him occasionally. What a
weird funk.

First, when you delete each voice mail, it goes into a deleted messages
folder.. You can get to this folder through the deleted messages button within
your voice mail tab. This gives you the opportunity to undelet the messages if
you had deleted them by mistake.

There is a clear all button within this deleted messages menu. I found I had
to close phone and then come back into deleted messages for this to work. Once
you have done that, you can double tap clear all and you will be prompted. You
can either delete or cancel; this gives you one more chance to say you didn't

Not really sure what the argument is here. Nothing wrong with people choosing
not to use their smart phone eyes free for whatever reason.
Also, once someone told me that others might think I look weird using my phone
in my pocket then I'm free to do whatever I want and it's really no one else's
business after that.

BTW, one of the things I liked about my Nokia running Symbian with Talks and
using the T9 interface was how easy it was to use with one hand and without
ever having to pull it out of my pocket.

Transcription Beta Question Please.

2018-12-18 Thread janet gross
Hi Everyone,
Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this annoying transcription beta
feature that shows up every time I attempt to listen to a voice mail message?
This is the most annoying thing, and to boot, it doesn't even read half the
message! I have no idea how this even got on my phone either. Although, from
my understanding this is from iOS, but not for sure.
Thank you for any suggestions.

RE: Deleting voice mails.

2018-12-18 Thread Bill Outman
First, when you delete each voice mail, it goes into a deleted messages
folder.. You can get to this folder through the deleted messages button within
your voice mail tab. This gives you the opportunity to undelet the messages if
you had deleted them by mistake.

There is a clear all button within this deleted messages menu. I found I had
to close phone and then come back into deleted messages for this to work. Once
you have done that, you can double tap clear all and you will be prompted. You
can either delete or cancel; this gives you one more chance to say you didn't
really want to do that.

Hope that is helpful.

That is only true if you installed the Windows Store version which I strongly

updates via Apple Update.

Well, that has changed. Apple software update only updates iCloud. To update
iTunes you must go to the Microsoft store. Even if you go to
www.itunes.com

it will send you to the Microsoft store if you are running windows.

Hi Fanus,

Close iTunes and launch Apple Update. That may not be the exact name, but it's
something like it. Use it to check for updates.

Best,
Anna

Hi Fanus

Once you’ve checked for updates, you need to close iTunes and make sure that
you are in the Apple Software Update program. That will have the iTunes update
checked. You then tab to the install update button. The update is well worth it
as the column browser and Jaws issue is fixed.

Hi Carolyn,
I really don't understand why anyone would say that is weird to unlock a phone,
as we as blind people unlock the phone with face id the same way as sighted
people, so I'm really lost on this one! LOL!

Siri Shortcut for Google Assistant

2018-12-18 Thread Brice Smith
Has anyone else lost the ability to use Siri shortcuts to access the
Google Assistant?

When I use my recorded phrase, Siri now always says “you’ll need to
continue in Assistant.” My other shortcuts still work. I tried
deleting and reinstalling this shortcut without success, so I’m
starting to think that Apple has blocked this particular shortcut.

RE: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread janet gross
Hi Simon and All,
Wow, so you think someone should be shot! LOL! Smile! I think this face id
issue is well blown out of proportion. Some people are thinking they have to
move their head around and around to unlock their phone, this is not the case
at all. The only time someone will have to move their head around is during
the face id set up process , and then just look at the phone when you want to
unlock it. If you want to unlock the phone while in your pocket, try lifting
the phone out of your pocket, and look down at it, and place it back in your
pocket. Just a thought, so please don't shoot me, just trying to help. I do
have face id set up on my xr phone, and I did set it up myself. The face id
feature will walk you through the set up process, meaning it will tell you to
turn your head to the right or to the left, or to look down, or to look at the
screen etc. When I unlock my phone, I press the power button, and look at the
phone, and the majority of the time it will unlock, but I've noticed if I don't
look directly at the phone, it will not unlock, and I tried that just to see if
it would really unlock if I wasn't looking directly at the phone. Now, it does
annoy me rather I look directly at the phone or not, and it will still ask me
for my security code, but from my understanding from Apple, this is how the
face id feature is set up, and the reason is for security purposes, in which I
can appreciate, but still annoying at the sametime though.

RE: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread janet gross
Hi Carolyn,
I really don't understand why anyone would say that is weird to unlock a phone,
as we as blind people unlock the phone with face id the same way as sighted
people, so I'm really lost on this one! LOL!

Not really sure what the argument is here. Nothing wrong with people choosing
not to use their smart phone eyes free for whatever reason.
Also, once someone told me that others might think I look weird using my phone
in my pocket then I'm free to do whatever I want and it's really no one else's
business after that.

BTW, one of the things I liked about my Nokia running Symbian with Talks and
using the T9 interface was how easy it was to use with one hand and without
ever having to pull it out of my pocket.

iCloud backup. Will my VDR library be restored from here?

2018-12-18 Thread 'Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.' via VIPhone
Hi,

I have VDR enabled as an app in iCloud storage. Does this mean when I restored
from this iCloud backup after resetting my phone, that my VDR library will be
restored?

I would very much like to avoid having to use iTunes and File Transfer for this
purpose.

Thanks in advance. Keith

Hi All,
Yes, I've also heard that Apple might introduce the touch id as well as the
face id, so people will have a choice. As choice is always welcome.

I’ve heard, recently, that at some point Apple will have a phone with in-screen
touch-ID, and FaceID at the same time. Of course, this is years away, but your
iPhone 8 can last years too.

RE: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread Michael Doise
Good morning everyone, I felt that I need to put my two cent in on this topic.

I understand that Touch ID allows for ease of use of your iPhone, and we should
not have to feel that we are doing something wrong by using a phone in our
pockets, but lets look at it from the perspective of someone sighted. As a low
vision person, I would be very disturbed if I could see someone’s pocket
bulging and moving. That would be disturbing and I might not talk to that
person because I would not know what they were up to, so please consider this
when you say you do not want people to judge you for using your phone in your
pocket. I do think though that it would be cool if there was on screen
fingerprinting for users who would like to use a Braille display or some other
device, One workaround though is to use the Braille keyboard or a Bluetooth
keyboard to enter a passcode, so it is not to bad.

Also, as a low vision user, I have to use attention mode off on Face ID but
otherwise, I think it is very easy to use. I also think that Face ID is very
secure, and I would recommend that people use it over just a passcode or no
security at all.

I think that we will see new security technologies in the future, but until
then, I think we have a great solution for now.

Simon, you do knowhat the iPhone 8 has Touch Id? Nobody forced you to snap up
an iPhone X last year when Face Id was brand new and just as with first
generation Touch Id was probably not as reliable and good as second generation
Touch Id was or this year's Face Id.

Sorry to say this, but if you are using your phone inside a bag or pocket,
you look really strange to sighted people. It’s not normal. Also, FaceID is
much more secure than TouchID ever was.

you look really strange to sighted people. It’s not normal. Also, FaceID is
much more secure than TouchID ever was.

Hi Len,

You may not have your phone around people, but millions of people do and to
them security does matter.

I got touch Id setup in know time. Also if it's cold out, using my
phone in my pocket works just fine for certain things. hahaha face id
more secure than touch id not worried about that when I don't have my
phone around anyone I am worried about hacking my device.

RE: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Having the choice once Touch Id is available to work anywhere on the screen
would be ideal. Simon, I'm sure Apple hasn't consulted blind horseback riders
which I assume do not make up a large number of Apple's customers, but also
remember that there are a lot of people who probably love Face Id because it
works so much better for them than Touch Id. If I have a project going in my
woodworking shop I can usually forget Touch Id for a week afterwards because I
may have little scratches or cuts on my fingers along with maybe a bit of glue
or wood finish which comes off gradually, but it's enough for Touch Id to not
work. Think of all the thousands of sighted people who are manual workers, who
need to wear gloves or simply all of us in the northern regions where you have
to wear gloves because it's cold for a good part of the year. Here Face Id is
much more convenient.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If Apple offers both it may not be this fall, but I wouldn't be surprised if it
were in the Fall of 2020. Qualcom has just announced their Snapdragon 855 chip
which supports fingerprint unlock by putting your finger anywhere on the screen
and Android phones are expected to adopt it this year. Apple designs their own
chip and, once again if this is part of what they want to offer, I'm sure it's
well on the way. Of course if Face Id is what Apple decides they want to push
then just as with the 3.5mm headphone jack no amount of consumer grumbling will
change their mind. By the way, I remember a few people who like Jed with Face
Id hated Touch Id when it came out and insisted that it simply was not working
for them.
My advice to Jed would be to get some help in setting it up and learning how to
use it. It seems to work perfectly fine for most others hence I assume it
really is simply because he is not setting it up and using it correctly. Once
again, this is not meant in a negative way, but I also know people who for the
life of them can't put their phone in the middle of a piece of paper and lift
it up straight to get a decent OCR result and I knew a girl back in Germany at
the school for the blind whose sense of direction was so bad that she would get
turned around in a 6 foot wide hallway and she wouldn't notice it.

Sieghard

I’ve heard, recently, that at some point Apple will have a phone with in-screen
touch-ID, and FaceID at the same time. Of course, this is years away, but your
iPhone 8 can last years too.

app background refresh question

2018-12-18 Thread Louise Peyton
Hello, all:
To ease battery drain in Ios 12, I turned off all the apps in background
refresh setting. Now, the basic question is, what purpose does app background
refresh serve? Is it necessary to have it on for apps including uber and lyft?
 Thanks in advance.

2018-12-18 Thread Joney
I understand the problem people are having. However, I have found that if you
memorize a spot that works in front of you, as in position, it will work every
time. My daughter told me, that often I took the phone back to far. With her
ideas and assistance, I can get it to undo itself 90% of the time. I just have
to remember that my hand has to be in a certain position and a certain place
for it to work. I’m not happy with Face ID, but I’m going to use it because I
refuse to allow something technological to beat me. :-)

Re: face id opinions wanted

2018-12-18 Thread Angie Nutt
Maybe it’s because I’m getting old but I really wouldn’t care if a future boss
thought I looked strange. I used to be very timid but now I’d likely tell
above-mentioned boss just what I thought of him/her.

All the best

another thing, is that you could use the touch id, whilst the phone is in
something like a bumbag, with out having to actually take it out. this is
particularly handy if using the phone whilst on horse back for example, as
it greatly reduces the risk of dropping the phone. but now you can't do
 that

 Hey guys,

OK, i need some input here on face ID. I'm gonna be brutally honest,
i personally hate it. I'm pretty good with apple, and keeping up on
technology but this face id, it's just not working well for me or not
as well as expected. I actually turned it off, that's how annoyed i
am with it, and i just do the home swipe. It literally took me 17
minutes to setup an alternate appearance, and i finally threw in the
towel and gave up cause it just wasn't recognizing my face. it would
tell me turn my head right, i'd move it an inch or 2, but i guess
that's too much. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
I have 1 appearance setup on my phone. What i find, out of 20 times
i'll unlock it, only about half of them work the 1st time. Another
thing in find, often when i go to sleep at night, i'll pick up my
phone to do something. It never has worked yet when i'm laying down.
In my eyes, this is not acceptable. I like to be productive with my
phone, not sit there for 30 seconds to try and get the damn thing
open. The fingerprint was way more reliable. Has anyone else
experienced this, am i alone? Help me out here guys.

 Thanks,

 Jed

Not really sure what the argument is here. Nothing wrong with people
choosing not to use their smart phone eyes free for whatever reason.
Also, once someone told me that others might think I look weird using my
phone in my pocket then I'm free to do whatever I want and it's really
no one else's business after that.

BTW, one of the things I liked about my Nokia running Symbian with Talks
and using the T9 interface was how easy it was to use with one hand and
without ever having to pull it out of my pocket.

I have been around sighted people all my life, and as far as I have ever
been aware they have no misconceptions about me, and if they do I soon put
them to rest. why do you think it makes no difference how we act?

exactly! you know what you are doing, and that's really all that matters.
not only that, but given the many misconceptions that sighteds still have
about us anyway, does it really make that much difference?
