WhatsApp may soon test sorting status updates by relevance on Android

2019-02-17 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

WhatsApp
launched its story-based Status functionality
two years ago in an attempt to compete against the popularity of
temporary media-based “story” updates from Snapchat. While Snapchat
has since
bled out its Android users
through ignorance and incompetence, WhatsApp’s Status feature has
grown in popularity by riding on the sheer number of users on the
messaging platform.

However, users of WhatsApp will agree that the app’s status updates
function is not really what someone would call “useful”. If you have a
large number
of contacts on WhatsApp (who also have you in their own contact list),
you will see large lists of status updates. This list will contain
updates from
everyone — your family, friends, colleagues as well as every other
person that you rarely interact with now. People also frequently
pollute Status updates
by posting very, very frequently, thus appearing on top of the reverse
chronologically-sorted list, because reasons. While you can mute
status updates
from people you don’t really care about, WhatsApp figured they needed
to do more to retain a sense of relevancy to the Status update list.

Now, WhatsApp is reportedly testing an algorithm for Status that will
sort updates by relevance to the viewer, rather than simply listing
the poster with
the latest update on top (along with all of his unexpired updates).
According to Mashable,
the messaging platform is testing out this feature with a small subset
of iPhone users in Brazil, Spain and India; with plans to roll it out
broadly as
well as on Android in the future. This new algorithmic sorting will
order updates based on whose update is likely to be most relevant to
the viewer. This
will be determined through a variety of signals into accounts, such as
whose Statuses you frequently view and interact with, as well as who
you message
frequently.

Mashable claims that WhatsApp will retain the information it collects
to make these determinations on the user’s phones, and out of
WhatsApp’s servers.
Your preferences will be saved as a part of backups, however.

Algorithm based sorting changes have not been Facebook’s forte. The
social media platform has been criticized in almost every instance of
it trying to
change sorting preferences, whether it be on Facebook or Instagram. So
it remains to be seen how WhatsApp’s massive user base will react to
these upcoming
changes.

I frequently--more than once a week--get message failed to
send. Usually it's when I am sending from my iPhone to someone
else's Android phone. Sometimes I can resend and it will go
through. At work, though,my desk is out of android range almost all the time.

Not sure if the message was delivered twice, or not.

Since it has only happened those two times, I haven't given it much thought.

Message failed to send

2019-02-17 Thread Donald Roberts
Just wondering whether any of you still occasionally get a message stating that
the message failed to send after you had previously sent a text message. I ask
because I still occasionally get such a message despite the fact that my
intended recipient did in fact receive the message. The problem now is that I
never know when to believe the message failure notice unless my recipient has
already responded.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: Newly dead iPhone 8. What are the best next steps?

2019-02-17 Thread Dave
yes i know. but it does the same, as the regular home button.

When i had to do a hard reset, on my iPhone 8. I did it the old way.

I got my sighted wife, to look at the screen, as i pressed the power and home
button.

The screen went off, for about 10 seconds, and then the apple logo came back,
and everything was fine.

It has a home button, but not one you can actually press, i.e. a mechanical
button which is why you have to press volume up followed by volume down
followed by holding the power button until the Apple logo appears.

Her iPhone 8 worked fine early this afternoon. She set it aside after
locking it. When trying to turn it on later, it was dead. No response. She
plugged it in to a wall charger, and nothing happened; usually, she gets some
response at this point. She is pretty sure there was good charge on the phone

We have tried holding down the power and home buttons for 12 seconds
several different times, but no joy. The phone didn’t charge when attached to

What would be good next steps?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions. Keith

Thanks, Sieghard, for your prompt response.

In answer to your questions, I have had other types of blue tooth devices
paired with my 6 including speakers and head sets.

When I attempt to pair the keyboards in question, in each case I am given a
pairing code to enter after which I receive a message a few seconds later that
pairing was unsuccessful. I should also point out that the keyboard is no more
than one foot away from the iPhone.

Have you tried anything else other than a keyboard?
Did you get a message to enter a code on your keyboard or did it just say it
was pairing and after a while that it failed?
I assume you do correctly put the keyboards in pairing mode and that they
show up on your iPhone under Bluetooth?

Subject: Blue Tooth issue

My iPhone 6 is running IOS 12.1.4. Since installing 12.1.4, I cannot pair a
blue tooth device with my 6. The IOS version may have nothing to do with
this because I hadn't paired any device with this phone for several months.
I have two blue tooth keyboards, both of which have been paired with this
phone previously. I put fresh batteries in each. After repeated failures, I
forgot not only both keyboards but also some other previously paired
devices. I have turned off and back on the iPhone. I am now out of ideas.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to solve the problem?
Do the iPhone blue tooth modules ever go bad?

Thanks.

Keith, for future issues, to do a re-boot on the IPhone eight, you muss:
quickly press the volume up and release, then the volume down and release. then
press the power button for about 25 seconds.

Hi,

I’m trying to help my teenage daughter with a new problem.

Her iPhone 8 worked fine early this afternoon. She set it aside after
locking it. When trying to turn it on later, it was dead. No response. She
plugged it in to a wall charger, and nothing happened; usually, she gets some
response at this point. She is pretty sure there was good charge on the phone
when she locked it.

We have tried holding down the power and home buttons for 12 seconds
several different times, but no joy. The phone didn’t charge when attached to
the charger for several hours.

What would be good next steps?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions. Keith

Keith, you are welcome. If I didn’t have 2 kids who go through charging cables
like crazy I wouldn’t have thought of suggesting trying a different charging
cable. What happens & it is hit or miss; when plugging in the bad charging
cable it starts charging the device. After a while it stops charging & no error
message is given, like with some failing charging cables the error message
“This product is not supported” will appear.

That is what I like about the Matias bluetooth keyboard, you don't have to

And you type this code on the keyboard and press enter afterwards, correct?
If so and it still doesn't work then I am not sure what's going on. If you
can have a Bluetooth speaker or headset connected and it works then
obviously your Bluetooth works fine.
Do these keyboards show up in the list as soon as you open it? If so try to
tap on the More button and remove them completely, then put them in pairing
mode and try again.

this because I hadn't paired any device with this phone for several months.

Thanks.

Don Roberts

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: Newly dead iPhone 8. What are the best next steps?

2019-02-17 Thread Dave
i still do it the old way, on my iPhone 8, and it works.

I press the home button, at the same time as the power button, for about 10
seconds or so.

Dave.

Keith, for future issues, to do a re-boot on the IPhone eight, you muss:
quickly press the volume up and release, then the volume down and release. then
press the power button for about 25 seconds.

thanks, Donna. A new charging cable did the trick. I would not have thought of
that without your suggestion. You saved the day! Best, Keith

  Donna

take it to an apple store, and they will run some diagnostics.

Keith

Re: Accessible sleep tracker for the Apple Watch.

2019-02-17 Thread Joney
I’ve missed part of this thread so, it might have been brought up. However, one
of the better sleep programs out there that I have found come to work with the
watch, it’s called sleep watch. They have recently updated things so that all
of it it’s voiceover accessible. You do have to wear it, and the initial set up
takes you a few minutes. Because it asks you if it can go to your health
program, and if you want notifications, and what do you want sleeptime just
done at night or all day, it also gives you a way to strengthen sensitivity or
lower sensitivity if it’s not recording your sleep properly. I think it’s a
great app. You have a choice of using it is a free member, which I do, or is a
paid app person. There are extra things you can do as a paid person. You can
compare you were sleep trends to others, and see more of a sleep goal idea. If
you haven’t looked at it, take a look. :-)
