It has a home button, but not one you can actually press, i.e. a mechanical button which is why you have to press volume up followed by volume down followed by holding the power button until the Apple logo appears.

Hi, I’m trying to help my teenage daughter with a new problem. Her iPhone 8 worked fine early this afternoon. She set it aside after locking it. When trying to turn it on later, it was dead. No response. She plugged it in to a wall charger, and nothing happened; usually, she gets some response at this point. She is pretty sure there was good charge on the phone when she locked it. We have tried holding down the power and home buttons for 12 seconds several different times, but no joy. The phone didn’t charge when attached to the charger for several hours.
