Keyboard/case for new Ipad mini

2019-04-07 Thread 'ChalmersAS' via VIPhone
Hi

I am considering buying the new mini and I’ve never had an ipad before.

Any advice on the best sort of keyboard/case would be welcome. Is it best to go
for the Apple one, or are other options any good?

Thanks in advance

Adrienne

Hi Dianne. You can read strait from the scanner app.

and you can, also do it by hand, without a stand.

First of all, I was not impressed with the NFB Technology explanation as to why
KNFB Reader has fallen so far behind in terms of its ability. I suspect Dr.
Kurzweil may be retiring from the scene somewhat as he well deserves and NFB is
fiddling around with things instead of tending to business. Won’t further
speculate on that.

I do have a couple of questions about Voice Dream Scanner. First of all must
you absolutely have to have the stand to use it or can you free-hand hold the
phone as I have managed for years with the KNFB products? Secondly, will the
scanner, Voice Dream Scanner, read the document you have taken a picture of as
I do with my mail and then begin reading or do I absolutely have to get the
document into their reader app in order to read? Frankly, all of what sounds
like a good bit of document manipulation absolutely overwhelms me. I need to be
able to take the picture and get the stuff read and am not sure I have the
patience to have to go into something else, dig around for the document and
maybe get it read. This stuff is absolutely boggling my mind.

When I looked at your video the other day, Richard, I really could not hear
your demonstration well nor could I hear to understand the speech as it read
the document after which extra steps you had to take to get it to read.

Sorry, it’s old lady ears and not quite understanding all the steps. KNFB and
Seeing AI are simple. They just don’t work consistently.

I have been a Kurzweil reader since the first home version personal reader in
the early 1990’s and have followed his technology all the way through. I have
had good luck with it until the last year or two since they are no longer doing
updates and keeping the product up to date. Also had a device called the Read
EZ Move which GW Micro sold for a while which was really terrific too. It was a
device from England, but mine just went out a few months ago and it is not
manufactured nor can it be repaired any longer. So, I am feeling kind of
desperate to find something which will make reading easier once again.

Thanks for further information, and NFB needs to get back on the stick. How
dare they treat Dr. Kurzweil’s product and work like this. If they aren’t going
to do it, someone needs to step up to the plate and get it done though with all

I just have to add my two cents here; I wasn’t even aware of the enhanced app

to arrange apps on my iPad Mini II to reflect a similar layout to my iPhone.
This enhanced app management feature is just a piece of cake.

Trekz Sizing - Was: bone conduction headphones - not what I expected

2019-04-07 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
Sieghard et al,

When I last ordered a set of Trekz Bone Conduction earphones there was an
option for the size of the headband. Admittedly, it was not particularly
granular; but there was at least a large and regular choice.

Has Trekz discontinued this; I am quite satisfied with the large Titaniums I
ordered several years ago; the very first Trekz I ordered had a too small (for
me) headband and it cracked within a few weeks. It would truly be a shame if
they had decided to discontinue the size option - far more important than the
several color choices offered.

The volume will never be loud enough when walking in noisy traffic.
That is the only downside to having your ears uncovered, which of course, is
also the upside to using bone conduction.
If you need the gps info while in noisy areas, there really isn't a good
solution.
If you just want info while hearing your surroundings they are fine.
I will say as someone who has not been able to where the previous Aftershokz, I
had an opportunity to try the Trex titanium the other day and they are more
comfortable by far.

I’m pretty sure there is a sizing chart one can use to buy different sizes
with. I’ve got a fairly big noggin at 7 3/8 inches, so for fit, it’s not an
issue for me. I don’t recall personally using a chart, so maybe the bigger size
is the default. I do recall other people mentioning it though. This would only
make sense since women use them as well.

2019-04-07 Thread Karen Poulakos
Wow! That is so much easier. I’m using my new SE, with the latest IOS update.
There are some apps on this phone that were not on my 5S, and because I don’t
know if I’ll ever use them, I want to move them into a folder to clean up my
screen a bit.

Thanks so much for the help.

If you still do the double tap and hold followed by dragging the app you are
doing it the hard way. I assume you are at least on iOS 9 or 10, not actually
sure any more when the easy was introduced, but all you have to do when you are
on an app you want to move is to swipe down or up with one finger where
Voiceover says “Editing Mode”, then double tap, Voiceover says “started
editing”. This basically replaces the double tap and hold.

Next swipe down twice to “drag” followed by the name of the app you want to
move and double tap.

Now go to where you want to put the app whether it’s in a different position on
the home screen, a different home screen or a folder. Put focus on the folder
or another app and swipe down again, you now have the following options:

Drop AppName before AppName (or FolderName) (the first AppName is the app you
are dragging, the second is the app or folder you are on.

Swipe down again and you have Drop AppName after whatever app or folder you are
on

Swipe down again and if you put focus on a folder you hear “Drop AppName in
whatever folder you are on.

Whichever option you want to do, drop before, drop after or drop in a folder,
just double tap when you get there and that’s it.

Regards,

Sieghard

Voice Dream Reader version 4 - Text to Speech, $14.99

I highly recommend this app for reading Bookshare books. Also gives access to
Dropbox files, Project Gutenberg books, web pages, Word files, PDF files, and
more. You can select your default voice, you get one Acapella voice free with
the app. You also have access to all the languages of the built-in voiceover
voices. You can purchase other voices from Acapella, Neo Speech and Ivona.
*Note: you cannot read books made for a specific format like iBooks, Nook,

convert Kindle books so they can be read using Voice Dream Reader, see Codex

Voice Dream Scanner by Voice Dream LLC., $5.99

winston Chen, who developed Voice Dream Reader and Writer, has developed an OCR
Scanner that is better than any other OCR app on the market, bar none! You can
save documents as PDF or text, though the PDF is fabulous because it retains
the formatting, graphics, and is completely accessible with a screen reader.

If you turn on Edge Detection and auto Capture, and hold the iPhone steady, it
will capture the image automatically. I have tested it free-hand and wiht the
Fopydo scanning Stand. It is amazing. It completely out performs KNFB Reader
You can use a batch mode and process all the pages when you are done, or save
the first page and then continue adding pages to that scan.
The Scanner can be used as a stand-alone app or in conjunction with Voice Dream

Be sure and update Voice Dream Reader because there is an option to add
documents to whichever folder you are in directly from within Voice Dream

The Scanner app uses the Voice Dream voices that you already have, or you can

No need to guess, since it's right on the Aftershokz web site. The

The volume will never be loud enough when walking in noisy traffic.

That is the only downside to having your ears uncovered, which of
course, is also the upside to using bone conduction.

If you need the gps info while in noisy areas, there really isn't a
good solution.

If you just want info while hearing your surroundings they are fine.

I will say as someone who has not been able to where the previous
Aftershokz, I had an opportunity to try the Trex titanium the other
day and they are more comfortable by far.

They're ideal for reading a book or listening to GPS instructions

improvement. I don't regret my backing of the Trekz Titaniums
when they came out and will upgrade to whatever the current
generation of Aftershokz is when these ones fail. Aftershokz
customer service and warranty has been very good and they quickly
replaced a set which broke without fuss.

Sometimes the supplied ear plugs are exactly what we want. True, the

there are times, when even a blind person want some passive noise

It does not separate pages.
I’d encourage folks who would like to see this feature write Winston Chen

Winston is a member of that list.

Have you guys tried to scan a book and if so how does the scanner handle two
pages of the book? I don’t think there is an option for column detection but
I’m sure it will be coming soon.
Impressive app regardless

I highly recommend this app for reading Bookshare books. Also gives access to
Dropbox files, Project Gutenberg books, web pages, Word files, PDF files, and
more. You can select your default voice, you get one Acapella voice free with
the app. You also have access to all the languages of the built-in voiceover
voices. You can purchase other voices from Acapella, Neo Speech and Ivona.
*Note: you cannot read books made for a specific format like iBooks, Nook,
Kindel, etc. However, with Kindle books, there is a PC utility you can use to
convert Kindle books so they can be read using Voice Dream Reader, see Codex

winston Chen, who developed Voice Dream Reader and Writer, has developed an OCR
Scanner that is better than any other OCR app on the market, bar none! You can
save documents as PDF or text, though the PDF is fabulous because it retains
the formatting, graphics, and is completely accessible with a screen reader.

If you turn on Edge Detection and auto Capture, and hold the iPhone steady, it
will capture the image automatically. I have tested it free-hand and wiht the

You can use a batch mode and process all the pages when you are done, or save
the first page and then continue adding pages to that scan.
The Scanner can be used as a stand-alone app or in conjunction with Voice Dream

Be sure and update Voice Dream Reader because there is an option to add

Diane,
Sorry about the volume and speed on the demo.
But, as others have said, you can use the app free hand just fine. I only used
the stand for the demo so I could do a true comparison and not have phone
position be an issue.
Also, you can set it to read automatically.
When it is done reading, you can re-read it by hitting the play button again.
But, the Voice Dream Scanner does not do document management, so if you don't
clear the scanner, the next scan will be added to the previous one.

It sounds like you do not plan on saving documents, just reading them and
moving on.
This will work great for you.

RE: Voice Dream Scanner versus seeing ai was KNFB question?

2019-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The original link provided was correct, but somehow it must have gotten
corrupted. Keep in mind that if you know the number of an Applevis Podcast, in
this case 1225, all you have to do to find it quickly is to Google “Applevis
Podcast 1225”. When I did this the first Google search result took me straight
to the correct page on the Applevis website. This doesn’t start the Podcast
playing right away, but using heading quick navigation takes you easily to the
summary of the Podcast and you then find the link to play the Podcast.
Of course you can also go to the Applevis website since there search feature
works extremely well, type “Voice Dream Reader” in the search field and then
you can apply the filter to show only Podcasts where it tells you right away
there is only 1 result.

best app for taking and organizing notes

2019-04-07 Thread Donald Raikes
Hi,

I am interested in taking short notes 5-10 sentences and essentially
making a set of note cards that I can use to organize thoughts and
track bits of information by date.

Is there a good app other than the obvious notes app?

I would like to be able to save the notecards to icloud drive or
dropbox so I can access them on my computer as well.

Thanks,
Don

I will say as someone who has not been able to where the previous Aftershokz, I
had an opportunity to try the Trex titanium the other day and they are more
comfortable by far.

understood by Siri and on phone calls but it's an area where I'd like some
improvement. I don't regret my backing of the Trekz Titaniums when they came
out and will upgrade to whatever the current generation of Aftershokz is when
these ones fail. Aftershokz customer service and warranty has been very good
and they quickly replaced a set which broke without fuss.

I have a pair of Aftershokz Trekz Titaniums, and I love them. They're my go to

Re: Bank America new bill pay function in mobile app

2019-04-07 Thread Bobby Druesedow
It has changed, and is more difficult. I found that I could only swipe through
about 4 payees, and then it would jump to the bottom of the list. If you will
do a 3 finger swipe down before you reach the last one in the group then you
should get to the next group of 4 or 5 payees. I called 800-933-6262 to ask
about the changes that were made that don't work with VO, and they sent me to a
department where I spoke with someone who was supposed to get back to me, but
this was a month or so ago, and I'm still waiting by the phone. I figured out
the 3 finger swipe thing on my own. HTH

Re: Bank America new bill pay function in mobile app

2019-04-07 Thread Richard Turner

We use too.
My My wife is sighted and she says on the iPad Mini you see about 7 payees,
while on the iPhone SE, you see maybe 3.
Flicking with one finger doesn't move beyond the first screen with VoiceOver,
so you do have to do the three finger swipe to scroll the screen.
The good news is that you can now do several payees at once, which I guess is
progress.
I think I'd prefer that the one finger flicks would continue through the list
of payees.

Axon V99 hearing aid: was: Re: bone conduction headphones - not what I expected

2019-04-07 Thread Jewel

Has anyone used one of these aids? They are very cheap: only 30$NZ [21$US].
They have a 4.5 rating if the feedback is to be believed.
They are made, specifically: or that is how I read it: for amplifying speech.
As it is rare: well, relatively so: for me to speak to someone person to
person/face to face: I do not want to spend a lot of money, which I have done
in the past, and I still have to keep asking for my companion to repeat what
he/she has said: a constant request which must put a strain on his/her
patience.
Remarkedly from time to time, I can, clearly, hear very very tiny sounds and on
my left side too which is my, particularly, bad side. I will give you an
example. A few nights ago, I opened the backdoor and spoke to Guideon, my dog.
He was about 5 feet to my left which is my bad side for hearing, but I,
actually, heard him move a paw and one claw made the faintest click on the
concrete!!!
It was Deslie, my sister who discovered the Axon v99 on the 'net. They are not
available in New Zealand so she has sent off to China where they are
manufactured. She says that, at the price, if it turns out to be nothing other
than a little box of useless junk,, little will be lost if it is tossed into
the rubbish or recycling bin!

Hi Richard another Bank of America customers,

I reported this issue at two occasions now to Bank of America staff. In the
meantime, I have been using Erica to make Bill payments. It actually works
pretty well. It’s accessible and I’ve been able to make these payments without
difficulty. I would recommend for now that you try this. Good luck. You have to
make one payment at a time, but that’s OK with me for now.

Re: Trekz Sizing - Was: bone conduction headphones - not what I expected

The Trekz Air only has one size. Note that they're called Trekz Air and
not Trekz Titanium Air. The sizing guide is to determine if the Trekz
Titanium or the Trekz Titanium Mini is the right size for you. I'm not
sure if it's available on the Amazon pages or not, but it is through
Aftershokz. I posted the link earlier.

Sieghard et al,

When I last ordered a set of Trekz Bone Conduction earphones there was
an option for the size of the headband.  Admittedly, it was not
particularly granular; but there was at least a large and regular choice.

Has Trekz discontinued this; I am quite satisfied with the large
Titaniums I ordered several years ago; the very first Trekz I ordered
had a too small (for me) headband and it cracked within a few weeks.
It would truly be a shame if they had decided to discontinue the size
option - far more important than the several color choices offered.

an accessible way to manager my Kindle content?

2019-04-07 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I have over 200 books in my Kindle account, many of which I have read or
started to read and now want to delete Most of these were free down loads from
Book Bub daily deals. I need to clear them out because I simply have too many
and am juggling sifting through them to figure out which I still need to read.
(This was all fine when the Kindle app on my phone held all the unread books,
but that got messed up when I had to reset and restore my phone. ) I bumbled
around on the amazon site and finally figured out where to go. I could access
a list of my books on the amazon site, but I cannot find an accessible way to
access the actions menu where the delete link is supposed to be. Anyone found
a way via the site on your phone or PC to clean up your content library? I'm
using JAWS 2019 on my laptop and can use my phone, but just hoping for anyone
who has successfully done this.

Aura meditation app

2019-04-07 Thread Beth G
Hello all,

Has anyone tried this app with voiceover? It looked mostly accessible, but I
cannot seem to get any of the meditations to play.

Maybe it’s not accessible? Or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Beth

Re: Bank America new bill pay function in mobile app

2019-04-07 Thread Mary Jo Partyka
I had the same problem with the bank of America pays. I will also try the
wreath finger scrub down. I had called the bank about a month or two ago and
they claim they would get back to me also and they didn’t. It’s a really
frustrating thing because the mobile app used to be so easy to use. Let me know
if they get back to you thank you

RE: Voice Dream Scanner.

2019-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And who really cares if KNFB Reader ups their game or not. It’s a free and
competitive market and one wonders why KNFB Reader costs $100 and Voice Dream
Scanner $5.99. KNFB Reader was developed by the NFB and I assume they do get
grants and such whereas Voice Dream Scanner is developed by a guy who I assume
does not. Maybe Winston has other income than that from his various apps, but
the same applies to the Seeing Eye GPS, at an outright purchase price of $299
it is pretty expensive especially since Sendero also received a lot of grants
to develop it.

I did read through some mail this morning but felt that as I worked through
what I had, there may have been a degradation in scan quality after doing and
discarding several documents. I tried closing the program and restarting and
finally got something which identified what I had, but just wondering if anyone
else has noted this. It might have been that I was set up at my kitchen table
and I am personally not as comfortable out there as I am in my big chair, page
in my lap, phone to the center of the document, lifting and positioning
properly to get picture. I will play with it some more. Overall, impressed and
pleased and think it will ultimately be useful until or if NFB gets things back
in action with KNFB Reader.

Russ, Thank you as well for that link. That demonstration was clearer to hear,
and I learned a lot of things with the descriptives there regarding settings
which I can try and work with as well.

I am pleased with the purchase. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

Smiles to all,

Dianne and the Fur Crew

RE: Bank America new bill pay function in mobile app

2019-04-07 Thread Judy Holloway
I have used the Bank of America iPhone app for many years, and they have really
screwed it up within the last few months. You have to scroll down to see the
list of payees, and paying bills and other transactions with this app are now
more complicated. I've finally gotten it to work now, though.

Thanks.

We use too.

My My wife is sighted and she says on the iPad Mini you see about 7 payees,
while on the iPhone SE, you see maybe 3.

Flicking with one finger doesn't move beyond the first screen with VoiceOver,
so you do have to do the three finger swipe to scroll the screen.

The good news is that you can now do several payees at once, which I guess is
progress.

I think I'd prefer that the one finger flicks would continue through the list
of payees.
