RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Then I think you may not have heard a Sonos system yet and while there a few
limitations, you can set up a Sonos One or some of th eother newer speakers
either as an Alexa or Google Home speaker. One limitation is that you can't use
features like Drop-In which you can do between actual Echo speakers.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I don’t really think you can compare the home pod to an echo as they are for
different purposes,

More of a comparison would be the home pod and the sonos products which are
meant for music / media playing.
And now with the new sonos products having alexa built in thye do compare more
to apple home pods.

I think a lot depends on how it’s going to be used. I have 2 Home Pods and
love them .. but I generally use them for listening to music .. or playing my
Apple TV through them .. controlling my smart plugs and such .. I think they
have superior sound to the Echo .. that being said, there are a lot more things
that work with the Echo .. and if you are into all the trivia .. games .. etc.,
there are a ton of skills for the Echo.

So, as most things ..”it depends” ..

Re: Problem With Auto Lock

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Turner
This is not a solution to the autolock, but why not just press the power button
when you set it down?
You may want to make sure all the background activities are off, the app
switcher is clear, and reboot the phone.
Or, call Apple Accessibility and ask them to do a screen share with diagnostics.

RE: Problem With Auto Lock

2020-07-25 Thread Carolyn
Why don't you just lock it? I never just sit mine down, have lock set on 30
seconds. The Apple guy suggested 5 minutes, which is OK, but right now I have
mine on 30 second, battery saver. Still, whenever I put it down, I lock it.

I am having a problem with my screen not locking when the phone is not in use.
When I sit the phone down, it usually will lock the screen after a short
period. I have had it set at

 1 minute with uncertain results.

It has been a problem for some time. Now it is getting worse

I have been reluctant to move to the SE 20/20 because the store that I normally
would purchase any phone from is not available. I am considering ordering the
phone and winging it, but I am not comfortable with that idea yet.

Re: people you may know entries in facebook

2020-07-25 Thread Donna Casteen
Hi,

I only use the Facebook app. Hopefully my instructions will somehow lead you to
where you need to be, if you use the Facebook website..
1. Launch Facebook
2. Tap on Facebook Menu (lower left)
3. From the top, swipe down to Top Shortcuts & tap to expand the list of items
4. Swipe down to Friends & tap to open
5. Swipe down past any unconfirmed or undeclined friend request. Below Friend
Request is a list of People You May Know

Hope this is helpful.

RE: Playing music on the iPhone: unable to access anything in the for you tab

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Turner
Alan,
That must explain why I don’t have a for you tab.
I turned off apple music so it doesn’t offer it.
I’m pretty sure that is an Apple music tab.

If those who are having issues have Apple Music, it is time to call Apple
Accessibility.

Copying a text message into an email

2020-07-25 Thread Holly

Hi guys:

Remember last week I was trying to send a text message to a email address,
but it would not go through. It was suggested that I copy and paste the
text into an email, but I didn't try that until today.

I opened the text and turned the rotor to 'text selection', but that option
did not show up.

I do have 'text selection' selected in my rotor, so not sure why it won't
show up inside the text.

It does show up when I type message into the body of an email, but not when
I am inside a text message.

Any ideas?

I think the best one is a toss up between Amazon Echo and Google Home, I have

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Mike Arrigo
I have an echo and mine is working great. I have never used the Apple home pod
which is Apple's answer to the smart speaker, but every review that I have read
about it says that it does not have nearly as man features as the Amazon Echo
or Google Home, also, you can play Apple music on your amazon echo. I have an
Echo and a Google home and I have no interest in getting the Apple Home pod.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Again, it depends on the type of questions you're asking. I have access to
Alexa, Siri, and a Google Home and find that Alexa consistently answers the
type of questions I'm asking. But like all things, these digital assistants
have a learning curve and I've no doubt gotten better at phrasing my questions
with Alexa who I use most often. She seems much more adept at specifying
calendar dates when asked for the third Tuesday of a particular month for
example. And if I'm remembering the price of the Home Pods correctly, I suspect
a couple of them cost you between $600 and $700 which is not insignificant and
a lot more than my four Echo devices.

I have really given up on the echo for answering most questions. Google is
better in my opinion. And my Google mini only cost me 20 bucks. I wouldn’t
listen to Sirius music on it. But for questions, and other voice only
listening, it’s fine. Most people in the tech press got it all wrong when it
came to HomePod. They said it was just another smart speaker and it fell short
with regard to Alexa and Google.. But that was never apples point. They all
have their uses.

Also, the amazon echo. Now has HQ music. and you can add external speakers, if

Well, considering your investment in your two Home Pods, I would agree that the
sound quality of music, etc should greatly exceed the sound of an Echo. I
primarily use my Echos as an online digital library and enjoy its ability to
answer my questions accurately. I think Amazon's system works better and more
accurately for this sort of use and considering it came along about three years
after Siri, I expect it will just continue to excel over time.

I totally agree with Peter. I have a pair of HomePods, and they totally blow
the echo away. But they really are music listening devices, or podcasts, or
playing your Apple TV, like Peter said. If you’re into all that other stuff,
the trivia games etc., then the HomePod isn’t what you want.

RE: Moving icons.

2020-07-25 Thread chaltain
Well, I don't know how this feature will work or whether it will be automatic
or not. I'm guessing it'll leave your home pages alone, but you'll have the
option of installing an app without having an icon show up on any home pages.
For apps that you don't place on your home page, you'll be able to bring up an
app drawer where you can get to any apps on your device. I assume you'll also
be able to go in and remove apps from your home pages, so they won't be
cluttering up your home pages but you'll still be able to get to them through
the app drawer.

Playing music on the iPhone: unable to access anything in the for you tab

2020-07-25 Thread Kimberly
Hi all,

I’m wondering if anyone can confirm this behavior in the music app on the
iPhone. When i access the for you tab, I can’t play any of the suggested music.
If i double tap any of the suggested selections, instead of playing that song
or album or artist the browse tab open to a completely different page not
relevant to the selection I’ve chosen. Can anyone confirm this? This is not a
very new problem, but I don’t believe I ever had it before iOS 13.

Thanks

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Mary Otten
I have really given up on the echo for answering most questions. Google is
better in my opinion. And my Google mini only cost me 20 bucks. I wouldn’t
listen to Sirius music on it. But for questions, and other voice only
listening, it’s fine. Most people in the tech press got it all wrong when it
came to HomePod. They said it was just another smart speaker and it fell short
with regard to Alexa and Google.. But that was never apples point. They all
have their uses.

2020-07-25 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Another option is the google home which I own. My mom got it for me
as a gift. I like it because I can listen to music from youtube which
you can't do with the echo. I also use mine to answer questions, as
well as help me get the correct spelling of words when I'm composing
email messages. It all depends on how you are going to use your
preferred device. Music also sounds very nice through my google home.

RE: Speak Screen?

2020-07-25 Thread Richard Turner
Speak screen is primarily for non-VoiceOver users in my opinion.
It allows the screen to be spoken when you do a two finger swipe down from the
top of the screen, i.e. the status bar.
When this is on, you can then lock your phone and it will keep reading.
Some people find this useful when reading Apple eBooks. Since if you lock your
screen when VoiceOver is reading, it stops.

I keep it turned off for myself.

Hi, Everyone.
Every once in a while I manage, usually in YouTube, to bring Siri up while VO
is talking, and I get two readers for the price of one. I think this is the
Speak Screen thing, but I don't know what I do to bring it up. I think there's
a "stop" option. Does anyone know what this is, and what it's for?

Thanks,

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Mary Otten
I totally agree with Peter. I have a pair of HomePods, and they totally blow
the echo away. But they really are music listening devices, or podcasts, or
playing your Apple TV, like Peter said. If you’re into all that other stuff,
the trivia games etc., then the HomePod isn’t what you want.

have superior sound to the Echo .. that being said, there are a lot more things

So, as most things ..”it depends” ..

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Janet,

I thought Apple's digital assistant is Siri. I would strongly recommend you
stick with the Amazon Echo rather than investing in a Home Pod running Siri.
All of these devices and systems have issues from time to time but my opinion
is that the Amazon Echo is the best of the lot.

RE: Moving icons.

2020-07-25 Thread Carolyn
Since you told me that with 14, our most used ones will be on Page two, I am
going into my preferred ones every day, just so that whenever that time comes,
it can happen. Will it be automatic, or will I have to do something?

I don't really see the point of moving app icons around. I know what pages
certain apps are on. I know that I have to swipe to get to certain apps. My
apps aren't in alphabetical order. I didn't know they were arranged that way.
Carolyn, I am glad that you are able to move the apps. It is always cool when
any of us learns something new with our iPhones.
