RE: Rotor set to Rows Option

2020-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I went to Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Roter, and I didn’t see
“rows” as an option. Do you mean “vertical navigation”? If so, make sure it’s
selected in your VoiceOver roter options.

get emails from various suppliers where I have no issues turning the rotor to

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

HBO Max is at long last joining the ranks of streaming services which will
include audio description, thanks to a settlement announced today.
Per the agreement, the service will include at least 1,500 hours of described

Improvements to their website and mobile apps are also promised by September of

The agreement was reached between WarnerMedia who owns HBO Max and a group of

Re: Question on Using the iPhone Without the Home Button

You can also turn on VoiceOver Help to practice the gestures. A 4
finger double tap. I would recommend practicing the new gestures in
this help mode.

Re: Connecting Alexa to Multiple iDevices Via Bluetooth?

2020-10-20 Thread Traci Duncan
Do you mean at the same time? If so, the answer is no. You can have any of your
iDevices connect via bluetooth to Alexa, but one at a time.

The thing I wish they’d add to Alexa is asking to connect to a specific device.
Alexa, connect to Dave’s iPhone, or Alexa connect to Marcy’s iPad. Alexa only
remembers the last device connected.

Re: Direct touch on the rotor

2020-10-20 Thread Traci Duncan
I’ve noticed this when using Flicktype classic. Now, I need to flick in the app
a couple times, turn the rotor to find direct touch, flick that on, then I can
use Flicktype like normal. Kind of a pain. *Shrugs…

Re: how do I save ring tones to my Iphone SE 2020

2020-10-20 Thread Dan

Well,

I tried to use Itunes first and can't
figure out how to do it from their either.  I couldn't even find
the darned ring tone files going through Itunes. I also tried to
send the ring tone files to Itunes via the sendto option and
Itunes didn't get them.

This is the most unpleasant part of owning
an Iphone in my opinion.

Thanks.

RE: how do I save ring tones to my Iphone SE 2020

2020-10-20 Thread Richard Turner
As Klyph said, you need to use iTunes or Garage Band.
I personally find iTunes a bit easier.
Connect your phone to the computer with the cable.
Open iTunes.
Select your phone.
Tab to the treeview that may or may not read well at first.
Press t until you hear Tones.
Tab to the list of tones.
Then, on the computer, navigate to the tones and I recommend doing one at a
time.
Copy the m4r file with control+c and alt-tab back to iTunes and press control+v
You should hear a tone that confirms it was copied.
Repeat for all the tones you want to add.
Then, you should find them in the Sound settings.

HTH,

to the phone now. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Interesting.
ON my SE 1st generation running the same iOS I have never experienced this.

I can also confirm this bug on an iPhone 7 running ios 14.0.1.
Does anyone know if this is a specific voice over bug? Does it effect all
iPhone models?
Thank you,

Re: how do I save ring tones to my Iphone SE 2020

2020-10-20 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
It works quite well. I have sometimes managed to copy more then one
ringtone to my Iphone, however, Richard is correct that it will
probably work better if you do one at a time. It is quite easy once
you have practiced it a bit. I'm glad I now know how to copy
ringtones to my phone using Itunes.

RE: Connecting Alexa to Multiple iDevices Via Bluetooth?

I mean that the active device would remain one only but can it remain connected
to more than one device?

Thanks!

Request instructions using IOS feature whose name I can't recall

2020-10-20 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Apologies for the vague subject line.  My S E 2020 is running IOS 13.7.
I know of an IOS feature which allows the user to write text and then
invoke it with a very brief command.  So I guess you could call it a
template.

Whenever I request Lyft or Uber, GPS takes the driver to a Safeway
parking lot behind my house.  So I need to create a brief instructive
text to send the driver in order to easily find my house.  Please tell
me what this feature is called and specifically how to use it.

Thanks much.

I believe you are thinking of the Siri Shortcuts.
There should be a shortcuts app on your phone.
I have not used them much so cannot be of more help, but I’m quite sure there

Apple iPhone 12 review: raising the bar: The Verge

2020-10-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Although the following article is quite long, I would argue that it is a
must-read for anyone considering iPhone 12.

Enjoy,

Mark

Apple iPhone 12 review: raising the bar: The Verge
It’s the one you should get unless you’re waiting for the Max or mini
By Dieter Bohn, Oct 20, 2020.

More than most years, there are a lot of things that are new in the iPhone
12. Apple has loaded in the usual upgrades like a faster processor and
improved camera, but that’s something we’ve come to expect. In addition to
all of that, there’s a new design, a new OLED screen, an entirely new
charging and accessory ecosystem with MagSafe, and, of course, 5G.

It seems obvious that both Apple and its carrier partners are trying to
align to make this a supercycle for upgrades. All of that new stuff is also
paired with both a higher price ($829 for the base 64GB model) and discounts
and heavily marketed carrier trade-in and installment plans. In the midst of
a pandemic-induced economic downturn, it could be a hard sell.

It’s easy to recommend the default iPhone for the times when you need a new
phone anyway, but it’s much more difficult to say whether all of this new
stuff adds up to something that could compel you to upgrade earlier than
you’d planned.

Nilay Patel is reviewing the iPhone 12 Pro separately, here. Both the
smaller iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max with its better cameras
won’t arrive for a little while. There’s reason to consider all of them, but
the standard iPhone 12 is the one I think most people who need a new iPhone
will want to get.

Good Stuff
• Excellent camera
• Elegant design
• Promising MagSafe ecosystem
• Upgraded display

Bad Stuff
• The 5G tax
• Battery is a small regression
• More expensive

iPhone 12 design
I love the new design for the iPhone 12. In addition to being smaller and
lighter than the iPhone 11, it has flat sides and a flat screen. We’ve been
living with curved edges on iPhones for six years, since 2014’s iPhone 6. So
part of my affection might just be that the iPhone 12 feels new. But it’s
also that it feels like a throwback to the iPhone 4 and 5 models, which were
the last iPhones whose design I truly loved.

Despite all of those flat edges, the seams and the corners are beveled just
enough to make it comfortable to hold. The rails on the iPhone 12 are matte
finish aluminum, and I prefer them to the glossy steel on the Pro models.
Unfortunately, the rear glass is super glossy, super prone to picking up
fingerprints, and as susceptible to picking up tiny little micro-abrasions
as ever. Most people will put a case on their phone anyway.

The front of the iPhone 12 isn’t technically glass at all, but a
glass-ceramic hybrid Apple has branded “Ceramic Shield.” It uses ceramic
crystals within the glass itself to improve drop resistance over the iPhone
11. Apple says it’s four times better, which is a good thing because screen
repair costs have gone up this year. I can’t test that with our review unit
(at least, not intentionally), but I did have a totally accidental drop to
concrete from three feet that stopped my heart but only put a barely
perceptible ding in the aluminum. Scratch resistance should be about the
same as last year.

If you look at the aluminum rail, you’ll see a bunch of antenna lines and
even a small plastic section on the side for the Ultra Wideband (UWB) mmWave
antenna. They break up the symmetry a bit (especially on the bottom), but it
doesn’t bother me. I’ve also become notch-blind at this point, but I should
note that Face ID still requires a very big cutout at the top of the screen.

The ceramic-glass hybrid screen should be more resistant to breaking from
drops

There’s no fingerprint sensor, and though I didn’t really expect one, during
the pandemic, it is a frustration. I suppose the one silver lining for
Android manufacturers mostly whiffing on Face Unlock is that their phones
are easier to get into when you’re wearing a mask.

Overall, though, this design just feels more elegant and confident than the
past few years of iPhones, including even the big iPhone X redesign. And the
smaller size is the best part; the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 always felt just
a little too big. If this is the design we’ll be living with for the next
six years, I won’t complain.

The iPhone 12’s OLED screen is excellent.
One of the reasons Apple was able to reduce the size of the iPhone 12 is
that it has switched over to an OLED screen. That helps reduce the bezels
and also keeps them perfect even all the way around the phone, while at the
same time keeping the actual viewable screen the same 6.1 inches as the
iPhone 11. I prefer the look of OLED to LCD because of its blacker blacks,
so I’ve been waiting for this change.

Along with the switch to OLED, Apple has also increased the pixel count to
1170 x 2532. If you haven’t been immersed in smartphone tech discussions,
you have blessedly avoided the complaining that previo

Does anyone know if this is a specific voice over bug? Does it effect all
iPhone models?
Thank you,

I like DuckDuckGo. In fact, that is my default search engine no matter which
browser I use. I also have it set as my home page in my browsers.
I learned about it years ago from a consumer advocate on the radio, Clarke
Howard.
They don't track you, and the results I get are much less blooted with junk

Re: Volume keeps Being Reset To Zero

2020-10-20 Thread Wayne Merritt
I just noticed this on my new iPhone 11 running iOS 14.0.1. My alarm
seemed quieter than normal this morning in the stock Clock app. When I
looked in the Sound settings I noticed the ringer and alert volume was
at 0%. We'll see what happens tomorrow morning after the adjustment I
made.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

 Hi
I have a really annoying issue with my iPhone 8 running IOS 14.0.1.
The master volume keeps getting reset to 0. VO volume stays where I

Change with buttons is turned off. Has anybody out there had this issue
 with IOS 14?
 Any ideas?
 Thanks.

Re: Request instructions using IOS feature whose name I can't recall ... text replacement

2020-10-20 Thread Ann Byrne
I think you are ooking for the same command that
makes OMG say "oh my goodness".

1. Insettings, go to general, then keyboard.
2. Double tap on text replacement, which is the first item on my phone.
3. Double tap on add.
4. In the edit box, type the words you want.
5. Tab to shortcutt and type in the shortcut.

Remember when invoking the shortcut you type the
abbreviation followed by a space; then double tap.

=
Apologies for the vague subject line.  My S E
2020 is running IOS 13.7.  I know of an IOS
feature which allows the user to write text and
then invoke it with a very brief command.  So I
guess you could call it a template.

Whenever I request Lyft or Uber, GPS takes the
driver to a Safeway parking lot behind my
house.  So I need to create a brief instructive
text to send the driver in order to easily find
my house.  Please tell me what this feature is
called and specifically how to use it.

Thanks much.

Re: IOS 14.1 is out

2020-10-20 Thread Wayne Merritt
For those interested, here are the AppleVis notes on VoiceOver fixes,
bugs, and general fixes.
Apple has today released iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our preliminary testing suggests that
Apple has resolved the most critical issues present in the initial
releases of iOS and iPadOS 14. However, there are also a couple new
bugs in today's releases.

Fixes for Blind and Low Vision Users in iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1
VoiceOver focus is no longer unstable in Safari webpages, HTML views,
and some apps.
VoiceOver speech no longer has a lag that made VoiceOver feel less
responsive when using some voices.
VoiceOver voices will no longer on occasions announce punctuation such
as apostrophes and quotation marks when they should not be spoken.
You can now consistently locate by swiping the Done button when
editing the App Library on iOS.
You can now consistently locate by swiping the Done and Add Widget
buttons when editing the Today View.
New Bugs for Blind and Low Vision Users in iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1
When using the VoiceOver rotor to drag a widget on the Today View,
focus can spontaneously move to the Home screen and it is then not
possible to navigate back to the Today View
When editing a video in the Photos app, VoiceOver users can no longer
move the start and end positions on the time scrubber by flicking up
or down on them
With VoiceOver enabled, swiping from left to right with three fingers
in a folder takes you to the Today screen
Because iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 were not available to test before
today's release, we were not able to check for fixes, changes or
regressions ahead of time. Consequently, it is very likely that there
are additional fixes and possibly more new bugs.

Accordingly, If you encounter any additional fixes or bugs during your
own use of iOS 14.1 or iPadOS 14.1, please let us know by posting a
comment below.

iOS 14.1 Release Notes
Apple's release notes for iOS 14.1, shared by 9to5Mac, list the
following improvements:

Adds support for 10-bit HDR video playback and edit in Photos for
iPhone 8 and later
Addresses an issue where some widgets, folders, and icons were showing
up in reduced size on the Home Screen
Addresses an issue where dragging widgets on the Home Screen could
remove apps from folders
Fixes an issue where some emails in Mail were sent from an incorrect alias
Fixes an issue that could prevent incoming calls from displaying
region information
Fixes an issue on some devices where selecting zoomed display mode and
an alphanumeric passcode could result in the Lock Screen emergency
call button overlapping with the text input box
Addresses an issue where some users were occasionally unable to
download or add songs to their library while viewing an album or
playlist
Fixes an issue that could prevent zeroes from appearing in Calculator
Resolves an issue where streaming video resolution could temporarily
be reduced at the start of playback

The focus bug does appear to be fixed (thank God), but it looks like the

Subject: Re: IOS 14.1 is out

For those interested, here are the AppleVis notes on VoiceOver fixes, bugs, and
general fixes.
Apple has today released iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our preliminary testing suggests that Apple has
resolved the most critical issues present in the initial releases of iOS and
iPadOS 14. However, there are also a couple new bugs in today's releases.

Fixes for Blind and Low Vision Users in iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 VoiceOver
focus is no longer unstable in Safari webpages, HTML views, and some apps.
VoiceOver speech no longer has a lag that made VoiceOver feel less responsive
when using some voices.
VoiceOver voices will no longer on occasions announce punctuation such as
apostrophes and quotation marks when they should not be spoken.
You can now consistently locate by swiping the Done button when editing the App
Library on iOS.
You can now consistently locate by swiping the Done and Add Widget buttons when
editing the Today View.
New Bugs for Blind and Low Vision Users in iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 When using
the VoiceOver rotor to drag a widget on the Today View, focus can spontaneously
move to the Home screen and it is then not possible to navigate back to the
Today View When editing a video in the Photos app, VoiceOver users can no
longer move the start and end positions on the time scrubber by flicking up or
down on them With VoiceOver enabled, swiping from left to right with three
fingers in a folder takes you to the Today screen Because iOS 14.1 and iPadOS
14.1 were not available to test before today's release, we were not able to
check for fixes, changes or regressions ahead of time. Consequently, it is very
likely that there are additional fixes and possibly more new bugs.

Accordingly, If you encounter any additional fixes or bugs during your own use
of iOS 14.1 or iPadOS 14.1, please let us know by posting a comment below.

iOS 14.1 Release Notes
Apple's release notes for iOS 14.1, shared by 9to5Mac, list the following
improvements:

Adds support for 10-bit HDR video playback and edit in Photos for iPhone 8 and
later Addresses an issue where some widgets, folders, and icons were showing up
in reduced size on the Home Screen Addresses an issue where dragging widgets on
the Home Screen could remove apps from folders Fixes an issue where some emails
in Mail were sent from an incorrect alias Fixes an issue that could prevent
incoming calls from displaying region information Fixes an issue on some
devices where selecting zoomed display mode and an alphanumeric passcode could
result in the Lock Screen emergency call button overlapping with the text input
box Addresses an issue where some users were occasionally unable to download or
add songs to their library while viewing an album or playlist Fixes an issue
that could prevent zeroes from appearing in Calculator Resolves an issue where
streaming video resolution could temporarily be reduced at the start of
playback Fixes an issue that prevented setting up a family member’s Apple Watch
for some users Resolves an issue where the Apple Watch case material was
displayed incorrectly in the Apple Watch app Addresses an issue in the Files
app that could cause some MDM-managed cloud service providers to incorrectly
display content as unavailable Improves compatibility with Ubiquiti wireless
access points

I’m downloading it now, but it's ironic that I hit the focus bug in the

Siri volume is way down after installing 14.1

2020-10-20 Thread Mary Otten
My Siri tone as well as the voice which answers questions is way down after I
just installed 14.1. I have restarted my phone twice to know avail. Other
tones, such as the tone for when the mail comes in, are not affected. Voiceover
volume is fine. But Siri voice and Siri tone are so quiet I really can’t hear
them. The tone for dictation is also affected.

Get Siri talking and start tapping the up volume to get it back to the volume

It should, note I said should, remember that level after that.

As far as I know, Alexa can only remain connected to one device at a time. If
your iPhone is connected, I believe it’ll disconnect, if you connect another

I think I'll need to send my iPhone in for repairs, my 2 bottom speakers won't output at all

2020-10-20 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hi to all. I
unplugged my iPhone from recharging. I stopped using a bluetooth
speaker and I just found out that the bottom speakers on my iPhone 8
have no sound coming from them at all. I went into audio settings and
turned mono audio off and on again. However, when I tested the
balance control, I had the wright speakers all the way to 100% and no
sound came from then at all. Just the speaker on the top of my
iPhone. I turned my iPhone off and on again. I have no idea what
happened. This is very frustrating. I've got apple accessibility on
hold now. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

VoiceOver Switched to British English After Upgrading to 14.1

2020-10-20 Thread Fazil
Hi, Group.

VoiceOver in My iPhone8 has switched to British English after upgrading to
14.1. I want it back to US-English. How can I do that, please?

Thanks!

Re: I think I'll need to send my iPhone in for repairs, my 2 bottom speakers won't output at all

2020-10-20 Thread Marty Hutchings
I've got an iPhone 8 and it only has one speaker on the bottom. The other
grill is for a microphone. My top speaker does sound scratchy, so I would
like to know if there is anything that can be done for it.

I updated my 1st generation iPhone SE to 14.1 and the Siri volume did not

I guess I was lucky.

Get Siri talking and start tapping the up volume to get it back to the volume
you want.
It should, note I said should, remember that level after that.

RE: I think I'll need to send my iPhone in for repairs, my 2 bottom speakers won't output at all

2020-10-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Joshua,

Since you use a lot of Bluetooth speakers, I'd suggest you open control center
by placing focus on the time or something else in the status bar and doing a 3
finger swipe up. Swipe until you reach Bluetooth and turn it off. After doing
that, see if you notice any difference in your iPhone speakers. You might keep
a set of wired earphones handy in case you get no sound.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi to all. I
unplugged my iPhone from recharging. I stopped using a bluetooth speaker and I
just found out that the bottom speakers on my iPhone 8 have no sound coming
from them at all. I went into audio settings and turned mono audio off and on
again. However, when I tested the balance control, I had the wright speakers
all the way to 100% and no sound came from then at all. Just the speaker on
the top of my iPhone. I turned my iPhone off and on again. I have no idea
what happened. This is very frustrating. I've got apple accessibility on hold
now. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

RE: IOS 14.1 is out

2020-10-20 Thread Carolyn
My install took patience. It seemed to take quite a while.

Someone suggested getting Full Screen on another list. I can't understand
where, someone said in phone, someone said Accessibility, someone said, "below
Siri," I looked in Siri and below, as well as the others mentioned.

I’m downloading it now, but it's ironic that I hit the focus bug in the
software updates screen, so it took some patience just to get the install going
and then to monitor it's progress! 😉

I guess I was lucky.

Get Siri talking and start tapping the up volume to get it back to the volume
you want.
It should, note I said should, remember that level after that.

Be well,

RE: Has anyone used Uber lately?

2020-10-20 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi,

When I use the Uber app and get to the page that has the confirm and ride
button, I set focus to the dimmed confirm and ride button, flick left twice to
the line that states I'm wearing a mask and double tap it. This enables the
ride and confirm button which can then be double tapped to complete the ride
order. Hope this helps.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

Go to settings, Accessibility, Touch, and the last item is BackTap.
You can turn it on, then define two gestures: a double backtap, and a triple

Yes, this and other feedback help; thanks very much. I had four trips today.
Otherwise, I figured out that if I go to the trip in question in trips and go
through the rating process in there, I can write compliments, which seems to
have been taken away when immediately rating and tipping after the ride.

I can use my Focus braille display to send texts in 14.1!

2020-10-20 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

As far as I can tell, 14.1 has restored the use of writing with my Focus 40
Blue 5th Gen display. I was going to ask if it was fixed, but I decided to find
out for myself. I successfully unlocked my iPhone X. I entered my unlock code,
and it worked well, although audible feedback could have been better. I then
sent a text, and there was no problem at all. I'm happy. I can once again
really use my Focus.

Just letting folks know.

RE: [EXTERNAL] Re: how do I save ring tones to my Iphone SE 2020

2020-10-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

It really is not difficult using iTunes. As Richard explained, you connect your
iPhone, open iTunes and find your iPhone. I usually press Control + F which
takes me to the search box in iTunes, then it's I believe just one tab to get
to the iPhone button. You activate it, press tab a few times to get into the
treeview and arrow down to Tones, again two or three tabs to get into the list
of tones and from there it's simply copy and paste just as you would copy and
paste any file from one folder to another.

It really is very easy and kind of fun as well.

question about backing up your iPhone via Itunes

2020-10-20 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hi to all. I had told you all in a previous message that the bottom
speaker of my iPhone 8 just went out today for no reason. I asked
about sending my iPhone back for repairs as I've got apple care for
$200 and still have quite a bit of time left on it. Is it true if I
send my iPhone back for repairs, they want me to completely wipe my
iPhone clean? If this is true, my iPhone isn't going anywhere. I
couldn't get all my bard books back on my iPhone if I wanted. I do
intend of getting a high capacity SD card that is a 256 gig SD card
for about $40 and downloading or copying all the books from my iPhone
to this SD card so I at least have the books. Is it hard to do a
backup via iTunes? Is it better to use icloud? Don't you have to
have a lot of money to pay for gigs of space on ICLOUD? Thanks for
any help.
