You do not need other languages/voices unless you want them.
The only one you need is under speech, voice.

One thing to remember, Apple uses the word language, to also refer to voices.
It sounds like you have at least two other voices set.
Also, unless you turn it off under VoiceOver speech settings, when using the
default voice if another language is encountered on the web or even in an
email, VoiceOver will automatically switch voices.

Open VoiceOver, speech, and go down to rotor languages and see what you have
there.
In that same area of the settings, speech, before the rotor languages is an
item called, DetectLanguages that you want to say Off.

on the inside of the unit that contains the batteries, there is a 2 position
cycling switch. You should make sure that it is set to the short cycling

  Hi Traci,

Quite often, the air conditioner stays on much longer than it needs to.
For example, we usually have it set to 76 degrees during the day, and often
have to turn it to 79 or 80 to get it to shut off, even though other
thermometers indicate that the temperature we set it for has been reached.
Also, the button to tell you what the current temperature is does not work.
We had an air conditioning tech out yesterday because our compressor has
been cycling on and off, and he said the voltage from the thermostat to the
outside unit was fluctuating.

Re: Removing Selected Items From The Rotor Help Please.

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
One thing to remember, Apple uses the word language, to also refer to voices.
It sounds like you have at least two other voices set.
Also, unless you turn it off under VoiceOver speech settings, when using the
default voice if another language is encountered on the web or even in an
email, VoiceOver will automatically switch voices.

Open VoiceOver, speech, and go down to rotor languages and see what you have
there.
In that same area of the settings, speech, before the rotor languages is an
item called, DetectLanguages that you want to say Off.

You cannot remove language from the rotor, it appears if you have more than one

So, if you only have the default voice, my understanding is, you should not see

Re: Speaking of smart thermostats...

2021-04-30 Thread Andy Baracco
on the inside of the unit that contains the batteries, there is a 2 position
cycling switch. You should make sure that it is set to the short cycling
position. This will make sure that the AC or heating unit runs for a shorter
period of time. With some installations, the batteries provide the voltage to
the system. Try changing the batteries and see if this makes a difference.

  Hi Traci,

Quite often, the air conditioner stays on much longer than it needs to. For
example, we usually have it set to 76 degrees during the day, and often have to
turn it to 79 or 80 to get it to shut off, even though other thermometers
indicate that the temperature we set it for has been reached. Also, the button
to tell you what the current temperature is does not work. We had an air
conditioning tech out yesterday because our compressor has been cycling on and
off, and he said the voltage from the thermostat to the outside unit was
fluctuating.

We have a Honeywell model that works quite well. The schedule section of
the app is difficult/not worth using with VoiceOver.

But, Once the program is set, you can do adjustments quite easily.

The Ecobee looks like a tech geeks dream but who wants music coming out of
their thermostat, really?

Check with your utility company, they may have some great deals on smart
thermostats.

I do not know, even with ours, if you can use Alexa to set a schedule. I
have not tried that as I am spoiled by having a sighted wife to do those things.

The one down side of smart thermostats is that if your internet goes down,
you would have to be able to use the controls on the device to make adjustments.

But, it will still work on the schedule I believe.

RE: EcoBee Thermostat

2021-04-30 Thread sherrywells1157
Hi Pam,

I recently got an Eco Bee thermostat & have mixed feelings about it. I live in
an apartment so maintenance installed it so I cannot comment on how easy /
difficult that would be. I had problems turning off the schedule. It seems to
default to a schedule such that the temp will go up to 72 in the morning at a
set time & down to 65 at a set time at night. I don’t remember if these are
the exact default temps but you get the idea. I could tell Alexa to change the
schedule time but could not get rid of it altogether. I did not want a
schedule. I wanted to change the temp whenever I wanted. I wrote Eco Bee
support & they did email me instructions on how to do this which worked nicely.
One nice feature of the Eco Bee is that you can set a temp range such that if
the temp goes below 65 the heat will come on & if it goes above 75 the air
conditioning will come on. Of course you can set the temps to whatever you
want. And if you don’t want to bother with that, you can set the mode to heat
or cool & tell it the temp you want to maintain.

As someone else said, the Eco Bee is a geeks dream. This is my first talking
or smart thermostat. I probably won’t use all the features offered. But it
does work well. I can talk to the thermostat or to my Echo in another room to
change temps. I found the app a bit challenging so haven’t messed around with
it much yet. If I had it to do over again, I probably would have purchased
something more basic but my Eco Bee is working well so I’m sure not going to
change it now.

IOS 14.5, Apple Maps and Accessing City Guides

2021-04-30 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello to the list.

I have found that I can choose a City Guide from Apple Maps, but that when
the city guide is loaded, the 3 finger swipe up or down does nothing, but
neither does the scroll bar, it will hot advance, even when you scroll it to
what should be continuing parts of a specific city guide, nothing happens
with Voiceover.

I do realize that not too many people may wish to access these guides, but I
sure do love reading about specific geographical locations, so I am
wondering if anyone has worked with these city guides in Apple Maps, IOS
14.5.

Thanks.

Re: Removing Selected Items From The Rotor Help Please.

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
You cannot remove language from the rotor, it appears if you have more than one
language selected, that is, a rotor language as well as the default language.
So, if you only have the default voice, my understanding is, you should not see
Language in the rotor.

RE: using the Compass with VoiceOver

2021-04-30 Thread Carolyn
That makes sense now. It has been a while since I've used it, and I never had
that happen that much; yet, of course, I did not always go in a straight line.
I did remember it occasionally happening though. I think the compass is
teriffic for getting out of a large room, and Siri will launch it, so, when in
a hurry, pretty nice thing to have.

I do not use it very much so I just messed around with it to see what it did
for me.

The weird noises are indicators that the phone has tipped out of a perfectly
horizontal position. For example, the leading edge may have dipped downward
slightly or slightly upward. It can also happen when the sideways position
tips. At least that seems to be what it is doing for me. I have used this
noise for an indicator of levelness when using the spirit level function of the
compass.

If you have haptics turned on it will do a very small bump every 25 degrees as
you turn the phone around the horizon. As the phone crosses the direction of
north(360 degrees) it will give a small double bump. It will announce a new
degree heading every few degrees. This seems to vary depending on how quickly
you rotate the phone.

This is about as far as my knowledge goes so I hope it is helpful.

RE: Performing tasks on iPhone, while taking part in a phone call.

2021-04-30 Thread Carolyn
The reason for wanting this is I have a friend with a stage 4 brain tumor, and
she keeps calling me for our friends' numbers. Now that I know I can go into
Contacts, that will be good. Right now, she has a pretty hale and hearty voice,
only she talks so fast and has such a strong Massachusetts accent that we all
have a hard time understanding her. Anyway, that will make it easier for her,
me not having to call her back. Thanks for the help, guys.

Hi, Carolyn. You can do this, but it is tricky. I usually use a headset as
has been suggested. I also try to adjust the volume of voice over so there's a
way to hear both the speech and the caller. Sometimes it helps to use a male
voice if speaking to a female and vice versa. You should be able to do all of
the things you listed while on a phone call. I've gotten texts before, and
depending on the volume, the Voice over usually drowns out the person's
speaking. Like I said, it does take some practice.

I'm not big about call on speaker, but I am big on earbuds. I have three pair
of Apple ones - in computer desk, by living room chair, and in purse. I'm way

You can do all those things, but I would not try them without using some kind
of earphone/headset.
You will not be able to dictate a text, but you can type one and of course read.
If you look up a contact, and you want to text it to the person, you can simply
select share contact and then message and select the person you are talking to.
If you just want to give them the phone number, you would have to just tell
them unless you want to go through the steps to copy just the number and then
create a text and send it that way.

It is too distracting to me to have the call on speaker while doing this.

BTW, you cannot have the phone near your ear while you do this as the screen is
not going to react unless you pull the phone away from your head.

2021-04-30 Thread Mike B
Hi Pam,

It's only accessible via the ADT Pulse portal / website and manually of
course. It doesn't speak, a couple of the buttons are hard to detect and it
has a bunch of useless settings that we'd never use. In short, it does work
fine since when we're only at that house a few times a year, I can control
it via my iPhone and I have the necessary buttons and functions memorized
when we're there.

I don't know what company makes it for ADT, but it's an ADT thermostat.

Just curious, which smart thermostat do you have, and what do you find less

RE: using the Compass with VoiceOver

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
Note that the compass is going to report every, tiny, tiny, movement you make.
So if you are traveling due south at 180 degrees and you slightly turn the
phone or take a step a little bit off, you will hear something like 179 degrees.
Are you working with an Orientation and Mobility Instructor?

It might be easier to walk with someone following you to help you gage what the
app is telling you and when you should correct your path based on the app.

RE: Performing tasks on iPhone, while taking part in a phone call.

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner

RE: Speaking of smart thermostats...

2021-04-30 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND

RE: Speaking of smart thermostats...

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
BTW, I just took another stab at the scheduling feature in the Total Connect
Comfort app that works with Honeywell thermostats, and I was able to adjust it
with a little tedious double checking.
But it is better than it was and it is mostly accessible.

Hi Mike,

We have had a VIP Talking Thermostat for years, well actually we have probably
had three or four of them due to issues with them. It is again not working
well, so we are now investigating smart thermostats.

Just curious, which smart thermostat do you have, and what do you find less
workable about it?

Thanks,
Pam

Hi Tracy,

We have 2 homes and we have a smart thermostat in 1, and a VIP talking

Talking Thermostat because of its ease of use and the speaking confirmation of
setting changes and instructions.

We have a Honeywell model that works quite well. The schedule section of the
app is difficult/not worth using with VoiceOver.

But, Once the program is set, you can do adjustments quite easily.

The Ecobee looks like a tech geeks dream but who wants music coming out of
their thermostat, really?

Check with your utility company, they may have some great deals on smart

I do not know, even with ours, if you can use Alexa to set a schedule. I have
not tried that as I am spoiled by having a sighted wife to do those things.

The one down side of smart thermostats is that if your internet goes down, you

But, it will still work on the schedule I believe.

RE: Microphone

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
Well, if the Zoom IQ 7 is still available, it is a very good microphone,
however, you have to plug an earphone into the microphone's 3.5 MM jack to hear
VoiceOver, and Bluetooth earphones do not work while using the microphone.

I'm curious about the Shure MD5 microphone that was mentioned, I wonder if the
same thing happens that you cannot hear voiceover when it is plugged in since
it is plugging into the Lightning port.
The app is accessible, but you have to switch from the record screen back to
the library screen to hear your recording.
Of course, you should be able to use the app of your choice.
Here is a link to their page about the Shure Mic:
https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/mv5

The question has not been asked, and I did not see it in the original post,
what kind of recording is the microphone going to be used for?

The Zoom IQ microphones are stereo and fairly small and work best on a phone
without a case, or at least a case that leaves the charging port completely
open since the post on the mic for the lightning plug is very short, even after
removing the little plastic spacer they include.

The Line 6 looks like an over the top system focused completely on music and
more. Check their web site for a warning about the wireless system that needs
a firmware update.

I think the Shure Mv5 Digital condenser microphone is a unidirectional
microphone that would be great for recording either spoken word or a person
playing an instrument or singing.

If we are talking just spoken word, the built in microphone or microphones,
depending on the iPhone, do a fine job though an external mic does improve
things.

Speaking of smart thermostats...

2021-04-30 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I’m in the market for an accessible thermostat. I cannot decide between
a smart one or replacing my talking model. What has been your experience with
smart thermostats and their apps? Some of the below models in the article seem
way too feature rich for my needs. I mainly want to set programs, be able to
adjust temperature, or turn off the system.

Thanks for any assistance. Hope you find the article useful.

If we are talking just spoken word, the built in microphone or microphones,
depending on the iPhone, do a fine job though an external mic does improve
things.

I don't, but if it works with Alexa, and you have Alexa in your house, it would
be accessible. Whether the setup is, hopefully someone can speak to that.

reminder alerts back on track

2021-04-30 Thread deidreandlouise
Heelo

I don't know what I tweaked that worked - banners which would not stay
selected, or something in sounds, but my alerts are once more reading the
entire title of the Reminder. Thank goodness. I've missed a few too many
alerts in the last month and don't want to have to pick my phone up and
check manually for them.

I guess I could use the Echo, but I try to keep it
uncluttered of that kind of stuff. I'm ot sure that makes sense, but the
least build up of extraneous stuff it stores, not to my advantage, kind of
rubs me wrong.

One of my Echoes went off-line and I haven't figured that out
yet either. I guess I'll call Amazon customer service for customers with
disabilities. The tech service is excellent and is very easy to get through
to quickly.

Re: Getting Started with the iPhone and iOS 14

2021-04-30 Thread Fred Olver
If you decide to order this book you will not be disappointed. I first learned
how to use my Iphone 4 or 4S from one of Anna's first "how-to" books and have
recommended her various works to others. Everything is presented in
easy-to-learn segments and described beautifully. Although you may have learned
to use your Iphone or Ipad on the fly I'm sure you will find this book to be
extremely easy to read and understand. Her books are probably the most
understood volume on any aspect of technology I have ever read. Thanks. Do
yourself a favor and get this book which will expand your knowledge on the most
intrinzic and valuable technological advance ever to make it's way in to the
market for blind and visually impaired individuals. In fact I think I'll order
one myself, just for the new and updated information which I'm sure it offers.
Available in several formats I'm sure there's one or more which will meet your
needs.

This new edition of our soup-to-nuts tutorial for

the first appendix, which lists the most handy gestures and buttons in an
organized manner so you can find the one you want.

Other appendices include troubleshooting tips and a
