Re: Looking Up for a Word On the Fly On Internet?

2021-05-07 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I use an echo/a-lady and just ask. She don't always get it it right, but
often enough to be useful; or utterly useless of course.

I had to resort back to a Franklin Language-Master on enough occasions too.

See, worth keeping someof this old gear too.

Hi, Group.

How can I use dictionary on the internet if I find an unfamiliar word in an
article on my iPhone8, please?

Thanks!

RE: the faltering accessibility of DoorDash

2021-05-07 Thread Dennis Long
If they have a face book page and there is a message option on that page use
it. Using face book and twitter a lot of those pages are monitered by English
speaking people. So absolutely keep reporting it.

Last time I ordered, I was able to place the order, though I had to guess at
one of the buttons; however, I did have one problem that was very irritating,
to say the least. One of the reasons I had decided to order was that I had
gotten a 50% promo last time I ordered, so I was going to use it. problem was,
I could not find, with Voiceover, any place to enter the promo code. I could
edit my payment method, etc., but could not enter the promo code so therefore
was not able to use my promotion. 50% is a big deal too. I wanted the food,
so made the order, but I was not happy about it at all. I thought about
contacting them and telling them that it was unfair that I could not get my
discount just because of their app’s inaccessibility, but I felt it would be
time wasted and better spent doing something else I would need to do, as I
figured it would be a hassle that would not bring any reward in the end. Most
of their reps can’t understand English well let alone trying to explain to them
about Voiceover accessibility.

I have no idea. I don't speak Arabic. Why not just give it a try. If you are a
person who typically does not use Siri, Siri can be setup so that you can type
your question instead of speaking your question.

Re: Sleep Number Bed App

2021-05-07 Thread Judy Wilkinson
My husband and I are totally blind and we just decided last week against asleep
bed precisely because we had questions about the remote. The company is all for
customer service but not for making things accessible. We could not determine
whether the app is accessible but the remote is basically unusable since there
are many keys that have rotors and you can forget where you are in the rotor
and then you have to choose up and down and enter we found the remote very
poor. We could not get our clerk in the store to get his iPhone hooked to one
of the beds there to make sure we could use the iPhone app but that probably
might work but for six to $10,000 you might want to consider other companies
that make pet pedestal style beds with more accessible remotes. For instance
mattress firm has pedestal beds and their remote it’s self has many fewer
buttons and is much more logical

Re: the faltering accessibility of DoorDash

2021-05-07 Thread 'Niki Keck' via VIPhone

Transfer Question

2021-05-07 Thread Kait Forbes
Just out of curiosity, Using the iPhone SE, does everyone use only ITunes
to transfer music and books to or is there another , better, more
accessible app. that you all prefer using? The other question. How in the
world do You all convert flac to mp3. I have done some searching. There
are so many companies and programs out there that do this sort of thing. I
am very unsure what and where to purchase said program from. Any input
would be appreciated.
Thank you

RE: Scanning money

2021-05-07 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Richard,

I just tested EyeNote on my SE 2020 running iOS 14.5.1 and it works just fine.
It was one of those apps that had an App Store update fairly recently after one
of the iOS upgrades.

However, glad to know this. I hope you can email them and let them know the

Re: the faltering accessibility of DoorDash

2021-05-07 Thread MamaPeach
We cancelled our Uber Eats Pass. Each time we go to order food, there are no
drivers or the restaurants are axperiencing busier times and the delivery
fee is tripled and doubled what it would be, even with a pass. I do hope
Door Dash gets their act together, they are more dependable as far as
getting your food, but the app is definitly a pain now, even for sighted
people.

I am strongly considering it. However, the minimum on dash pass is $12, whereas
the minimum on Eats Pass is $15. Since I am working from home and my husband is
not, a lot of times, I am ordering just for myself and that three dollars can
make a significant difference, believe it or not. I am going to hang out as

I'm not having those issues, but I can say that Uber Eats is probably
superior in terms of ease of use at this time, but as is the case with aps,
things can change with the next update.

Hi Jenn.

Thanks for your help. Turned out I was in the right area. What threw me was the
very long pause Voiceover gave before the pairing code. It also didn’t help
that there was no audio feedback to let me know it was connected. It’s working
great with my phone.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Kevin,

What you have to do is enter a number that Voiceover will give you. You have to
enter the exact number on the keyboard and then press enter. Some keyboards ask
for this and some don’t. Also make sure that your keyboard is in pairing mode.

How do I pair a Bluetooth keyboard in iOs 14.5.1 using Voiceover?

2021-05-07 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I just got a Logitech Ergonomic keyboard, and I'd like to pair it with my
iPhone X. Problem is I'm not finding a pairing option once I select it in
Bluetooth in Settings. If I press ENTER on the keyboard, it kicks me out of
pairing, and I'm not finding anything on the display with Voiceover other than
cancel.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Kevin and Jilly

This has gotten worse I think in 14.5, but I cannot be sure.

I'd remove MBraille from the third party keyboards, try the notes app again.

And make sure describe images, and all that new stuff is off.

Then add MBraille back and see if it clears up.

Re: the faltering accessibility of DoorDash

2021-05-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
Here's another option: If you are an Aira subscriber, you can use
their promo for May where they can help you browse, order, or track
your order on a food delivery site like DoorDash. You can use up to 20
minutes on 1 call every 48 hours. Not a lot of time, but if you put
your food in the cart, you could have Aira complete the order for you.
I setup notifications on my DoorDash app, so I get notified at each
stage of the order process. I'm not sure if non-subscribers can use
this promo or if it just for Aira users.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

Agreed. Unfortunately, I think Sirius XM only broadcasts to the US and Canada.

Good luck on finding a source,

RE: configuring an iphone for a new user

Great post. Thanks very much.

Hi,

Here are a few settings I adjust when doing initial IOS training. Once the
student has an initial knowledge, I alter some of these. I am referring to IOS
14.x here.

1. Turn on "Do Not DisturB". This will prevent notifications from disturbing
the class. If your phone also had cell service, it would prevent phone calls
from disturbing you as well.

Settings / Do Not Disturb

2. Turn off "Autolock" by setting it to "never". This prevents the student's
phone from locking every few minutes while in the class.

Settings / Display & Brightness / Autolock

Note - you may want to reset these two items after the class if the student
will be taking the phone away with them.

3. If the student is a Voiceover-only user, turn on the "screen curtain" to
save some battery usage.

3-finger tripple tap

4. If Voiceover is being used, make sure "hints" are turned on.

Settings / Accessibility / Voiceover / Verbosity / Speak hints

5. If Voiceover is being used, set the Voiceover volume so both the instructor
and the student can hear it. If in an area where you need to be quiet, consider
using a splitter so two sets of earpods or headphones can be used at the same
time.

Volume buttons or add "volume" to the rotor

6. Set SIRI options to display its responses and your spoken inputs. This will
help the student while learning to use SIRI.

Settings / SIRI & Search / SIRI Responses

7. If cell service is available, set the phone option to use "full screen" for
calls. This avoids the difficulties for beginners in dealing with the one-line
display mode on calls.

Settings / Phone / Incoming calls

8. Initially, set typing style to "standard" when working with the on-screen
keyboard. Once the student is comfortable with the on-screen keyboard you can
introduce the other typing styles.

Settings / Accessibility / Voiceover / typing / typing style

There are likely other settings one could adjust. Much depends on the model of
phone, the IOS version, the usage the student will make of the phone, and their
current level of knowledge / skill with it.

I’d like to alter settings that would make the learning experience as

turned off raise to wake. I was going to lock orientation but can’t find the
setting in IOS 14. Can anyone suggest further steps I could take to accomplish
my goal? Thanks.

I've never had it not work; though, as I write this, was it after 14.5 update

Here is the info on it.

Cash Reader is free to download. The free version limits the identification to

Re: Upgrading Iphone 7

2021-05-07 Thread doug parisian
David, thanks for what I suspected.  Yes, auto updates are turned off.
I'll eventually commit the many tangible buttons on instapot to memory.
Further, I have no reason for updating IO on Iphone 7.  I had originally
planned to hand in a couple of retired Iphones to Apple for whatever
bucks I could nab but just never got to it, then I learned just in time
about Instapot.  I had already properly wiped my Iphone 7 which had only
16 GB.  My 8 has 32GB and managed to get the larger backup sufficiently
restored on 8 to include Instapot.  I don't care about the rest of the
apps since 7 if only to be used for instapot.

And don't get me started on the moral bankruptcy of appliance
manufacturers.  Example, a talking microwave need not cost anywhere near
$300 but that isn't for this list.

On 2021-05-07 10:47 a.m., Dave Clement wrote:

Hi Doug,

An iPhone 7 can run IOS 14.x so if you attempt to upgrade it, IOS 14.5.1 would
get installed. IOS only upgrades to the latest version. If support for your
Instapot was broken in IOS 14 and you want/need to use the Instapot app, then
don't upgrade.

I have read about the problem with Instapot dropping support for the bluetooth
version of the Instapot. Is this what you are running into or is there a
separate problem with the app for Instapot? I have heard that the WIFI model
Instapot is working OK but that does not help all those who bought the
bluetooth model and the WIFI model is more expensive.

One last thought - I'm sure you've done this but make sure you have "automatic
updates" turned off on your iPhone 7 to prevent the upgrade to IOS 14.5.1.

the instapot and i know instapot are too morally bankrupt to continue
supporting blind customers with their accessible app. So, what will happen if
I attempt to upgrade my Iphone 7? Will it simply reject the most recent update
or install a previous update it can handle and that will still allow instapot
to work?

Re: looking for an accessible listing for sirius xm channels.

2021-05-07 Thread James English
Hi all,

On the subject of Sirius xm, does anybody know of a way of getting it
in the UK? They've taken over tunein's nfl and nba broadcast rights
and finding radio streaming for those is becoming more of a pain every
year.

RE: Arboleaf scale

2021-05-07 Thread Richard Turner
There was no weight setting when I set up the app.
Note, I do not have the scale yet, but it seems clear to me that the weight is
given upon your first use.
There was height and birthday and permissions to sync with other apps, like
Apple Health.
But nothing about weight.

This is an oversight I made in talking about this model, I cheated setting up,
using residual vision and Zoom to set up initially, I tried today to set up a
guest user, and I did the height, using voiceover, to duplicate the scenario,
and got through the height pickers, then weight disappeared completely. So I’m
baffled by this as well. Was hoping to find a customer service number or email

Re: configuring an iphone for a new user

2021-05-07 Thread Dave Clement

It is a struggle, but I managed to get it entered.
What is really confusing is that it seems to always show as dimmed, but after
double tapping on it, check the lower part of the screen and you hopefully will
find the picker items and then a Confirm button to the left of what you just
selected.
It is a bit counter-intuitive, but it worked.
I will have the scale on Monday so will know if it really worked.

RE: Arboleaf scale

2021-05-07 Thread Richard Turner
It is a struggle, but I managed to get it entered.
What is really confusing is that it seems to always show as dimmed, but after
double tapping on it, check the lower part of the screen and you hopefully will
find the picker items and then a Confirm button to the left of what you just
selected.
It is a bit counter-intuitive, but it worked.
I will have the scale on Monday so will know if it really worked.

Re: Upgrading Iphone 7

2021-05-07 Thread Dave Clement

I attempt to upgrade my Iphone 7? Will it simply reject the most recent update

Though I'm not sure how to do this, if you have Disney Plus, they
added the ability to watch content with multiple people from different

person shares their stream with others. I have noticed share buttons
on screens for shows or movies when browsing.

Reporting back on the Navilense experiment with mobility trainer, Plus I got the first shot today!

2021-05-07 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Hi,

So I took a couple of navilense tags with me today for my mobility lesson.
I asked Mary, The Wonderful, if she would mind helping me with a little
experiment. Of course, she said "yes", but I could tell she had her misgivings,
roughly along the same lines as here, you know the sort of thing, "you mustn't
weaken your core cane skills, and might it not be a distraction? What if the
signal goes down? What if there's somthing blocking your line of sight? So, I
made her the same answers that I have made here, with the addition of "if there
is something blocking my line of sight, then it is blocking my clear path
across the road, so, useful to know! Winwin!

She went across the road and tried holding the tag against a bollard, near
the crossing point. Here I discovered my first assumption, I.E., this proved
too narrow to hold the tag in a flat enough plane. So we just tried it with her
holding the tag. The road is about 20 feet across, and my phone picked it up,
no problem! I proceeded to cross, with the phone giving me indicators that I
was on path, I didn't try to do it exactly, not necessary, just enough on
track to be roughly straight. You could be more exact, but I was trying to keep
it real and not be distracted. by the time we had repeated this a few times on
a few crossings, I was nipping over in jig time, nice and straight and not
distracted at all!

You can set it to voice, voice with sounds and just sounds. I had it set to
both voice and sound, as I was practising, but for best results, I reckon just
sounds would be the most intuitive and least distracting. However, with the
voice it is nice to hear "3 meters, 2 meters 1 meter!" and you know you are
there!!

By the end, Mary was quite onboard with the whole concept. She has been
making notes and forwarding them the correct office in Irish Guide Dogs, for
recommending tactiles etc, but we both know, this is not going to happen any
time soon, so, something that works, even if it is just in the short term, is
potentially valuable to me and, perhaps, for others. We noted that you need to
use the largest of the tags, to ensure finding them from a reasonable
distance. This means that if I want to map the centre of Clonmel, I will have
to use reprints of my 1 large tag and they will all have to have the same
title. So, "crossing" Smaller tags would also be useful in shop windows, as I
would be walking past them, much nearer. This could help, not only for finding
shops, but also as a general way-marker. If I can get this sorted, in a very
basic manner, I shall contact the council and see if I can get it done properly
by the professionals from navilense.

Meanwhile, I sent a link to a discussion about something called "Navibelt"
which, as I see, Garry is interested. I too think it looks OK, but costs nearly
2000, and really, its main advantage over using the compass built in on the
phone, is its ability to do a thing called "bee-line" which, by the way, the
built-in compass can do, just doesn't seem to do it with voice-over. If anyone
can get this to work with VO, or with another compass app, or, indeed, on
Android, please let me know, it would be even easier than my navilense
solution, but I will still go about mapping Clonmel with navilense, because it
has many other uses.

Last of all, I had my jab, had a slightly sore arm and slept on and off for
a day and a half, am perfectly well now and have badges, proclaiming that I
have had the vaccination!"

Happy travels! Sandy. -

Hi Jim,

As far as accessing the favorites in StarPlayrx, it is quite simple.

After starting the app, just swipe to All Stars and double tap. This is located
right before All Channels.
As you swipe on the next screen, you will first come to a few defaulted
channels that are listed, but after that, you will have your list of channels
that you have favorited within the app. Just double tap to start playing the
favorite channel that you want.

Hope this has been helpful.

Hi Debbie,

I went to the App Store. The app you want is Bank of America, Mobile Banking.
There is another Bank of America app related to finance and another called B of
A also related to finance. Is it possible that the wrong app was downloaded?
The problems you describe are so different from the Mobile App. Anyway, just be
certain to download the correct app.

Best Regards,

Thank you Les.

Perhaps it’s the iPhone 8 that is the problem.

Actually it was my husband’s phone that we were trying to do this on so I’ll
see if he wants to work on it again!

I don’t remember which tab we went into but we were looking at alerts to see
about modifying those and that is where we couldn’t find a back button nor a
button to sign out and the tabs on the bottom were not the same as on the home
screen.

Maybe I’ll put the app on my phone which is also an iPhone 8 and work with it
some more.

Thanks again!

back button on the screen, but really do not need it. Let me provide a few
suggestions to get you started. First, the tabs you want are on the lower right
corner of the screen. By default, the accounts available to you should appear
first. You can single finger double tap to activate any of them. Along the
bottom right corner are a list of tabs. They include accounts, transfers and
bill pay. Just double tap any of them to activate them. There is an electronic
assistant called Erica. She can assist in paying bills, transferring money and
many other tasks. You don’t have to use her, I find I do sometimes, and other
times, I use the app’s facilities to do what I want. Finally, on most screens,
there is a sign out button. Again, just double tap to activate and confirm you
wish to sign out. Swiping from left to right should help you once you activate
the feature you wish to use. I would be happy to assist further if you wish,
but this should get you going.

Best Regards,

Les

Subject: Bank of America App

Hello,

I’ve downloaded the bank of America app to my iPhone 8 with the latest IOS
update and find that it is not very accessible.

I received a verification code which I entered but then it was very difficult
to find a continue button. I actually called AIRA and they were able to help me
find it using another iPhone to check the screen. There were 2 buttons which
were not labeled so that I could say whether I wanted the device to be
remembered and AIRA had to tell me which button was which; yes or no.

Okay, so I got logged in and selected one of the tabs on the bottom just to
check out what was in there and then I couldn’t find a back button and the Z
scrub didn’t work. I couldn’t even sign out of the app so I just closed out of
the app and will wait for the session to time out to log me out.

Does anyone have any work arounds for this app or am I doing something wrong?
Is it just not accessible? Maybe it’s slightly usable?

Thanks!

Debbie

Re: looking for an accessible listing for sirius xm channels.

2021-05-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
Here is a Wikipedia page I found yesterday that has a full list of all
Sirius XM channels. The page is divided up into sections with headings
and tables which show the channels. The tables include columns which
list the channel name, have a list of genres they cover, sample
artists, channel number on Sirius and from the Dish Network, and say
whether the channel is available on Sirius and on the Internet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sirius_XM_Radio_channels
Also, though some people have found an app which is simpler to use,
I've been able to find my way around the main Sirius app without any
issues. I prefer using the main app since you get several features
which are not in that stripped down simpler app, such as the ability
to pause and resume live or streaming radio/shows, skip up to 6 songs
per station, and to "Go Live" or jump to the current live programming
for a station, which is handy if the station has been paused for a
long time. For instance, I started the 80's channel last weekend and
they were doing a Top 40 countdown for 1986 for last week. I paused
the station, and was able to resume at that point up to 2 hours later.
There are other useful features, but these are my favorites. There are
a couple of unlabeled buttons on the player screen, but you could
label them with a 2 finger double tap and hold. You can also get to a
full list of all channels, Xtra or online/Internet only stations,
drill down by genre to stations, and more, all through the main app.
I've found the Sirius app to be roughly 90% accessible, which is
better than it was many years ago, or so I've heard anyway. My only
gripe is that VoiceOver Actions are not supported when you want to
edit and reorder your favorite channels. I've sent them feedback about
this through the app, but we'll see if anything happens.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

In the previous messages I do not think anyone mentioned that EyeNote is for
only US currency. Cash reader is for a large number of currencies.

Here is the info on it.

Cash Reader is free to download. The free version limits the identification to
the lowest two banknotes for each currency.
Full version identifies all banknotes for the growing number of currencies. You
can purchase the Full version within the app at any time.
See the app store page for updated currencies and languages.

2021-05-07 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Debbie,

I do this so often I did not even think about this. If you touch the upper left
corner of the screen, there is an item called Go Back to Previous Screen. You
can also swipe left and find this, it is the first item on any given page.
Also, sometimes, it’s helpful to use Explore by Touch. You do this by touching
in the middle of the screen if you get stuck and cannot swipe anywhere. I
wonder if possibly the app did not install properly on your husband’s phone? It
can happen. Let me know if I can assist further.

Hi Debbie,

I have been using this app for many years and find it quite accessible.

Currently, I am running it with my iPhone 12 Mini and IOS 14.5. I do not find a
back button on the screen, but really do not need it.

Les

Thanks!

Debbie

weekend, and could not get it to work properly. I called the disability help
number and accomplished what I wanted, however. If the site won’t work as it
ought, I’m glad there is a number to call for help, even though there is a wait
time there.

That is also my experience. Very disappointing.

I used DoorDash some months ago and found it very accessible. Now it is almost
unusable. Has this been the experience of anyone else?

RE: Scanning money

2021-05-07 Thread John J. Fioravanti, Jr.
Hi: I used Eyenote a few days ago and it worked fine, now when I hold the
camera above currency, Eyenote says nothing. I re-installed the app and nothing
changed. Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks.

This is info from my web site:

EyeNote money identifier from Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Free

As of January 22, 2018, the updated EyeNote. 3.0 app is now 64-bit and works on
Apple mobile devices that support iOS version 9.1 or greater. These include
Apple iPhone. 5 and newer models, 5th generation iPod. Touch and later
generations, and iPad.2 and newer models.

* Utilizes VoiceOver for vocal and gesture feedback if it is turned on
for the target iOS device.
* Privacy mode communicates results with an audible beep or pulse
pattern.
* Runs without any special filters or background material
* Does not require a data connection all processing on device
*   One touch, hand-held operation
* Identifies face and back of note in any orientation
* Camera flash is not required
*   2 to 4 second response time
* Supports English and Spanish languages

Scanning Notes:
To complete a successful scan, the note should be positioned 6 to 8 inches away
from the camera. The app must scan more than half of the note to recognize it.
Adequate natural or artificial lighting is required for proper scanning, for
ideal scanning conditions limit hand movement to reduce image blur. For best
results, place the note on a flat surface. In Privacy mode, the app will not
speak the denomination, but will communicate results back to the user with a
pulse pattern (see below). On the iPhone, Privacy mode uses the vibration
buzzer for the pulses. On the iPod Touch and iPad 2, Privacy mode uses an
audible beep for the pulses. The patterns follow an easy sequential pattern:

* One Dollar is 1 pulse.
* Two Dollars is 2 pulses.
* Five Dollars is 3 pulses.
* Ten Dollars is 4 pulses.
* Twenty Dollars is 5 pulses.
* Fifty Dollars is 6 pulses.
* One Hundred Dollars is 7 pulses.
* Error, reposition is 8 rapid pulses.

Also, in the iOS Settings/Eyenote, you can toggle a settings menu on, so you
can change from Speak, Tone, or Pulse in the app itself.
Make sure you set your device correctly:
Go to Settings, then Sounds. There are 2 Vibrate setting switches on this
screen. At the top of the Sounds screen there is Silent, with a vibrate switch
setting; this switch does not matter for the EyeNote to vibrate. Scrolling down
the screen there is another Vibrate switch just above Ringtone. This Vibrate
setting has to be set to ON for EyeNote to vibrate on an iPhone.

Use zoom to connect to yor friend,

Then while one of you plays the media you wish to watch / listen to,
Share the desktop via zoom so both get the audio / video content.

Hi everyone hope you're doing well and staying safe. My friend and I are in
different locations quite far away from each other but we both have iOS
devices. We would like to watch a movie or listen to an audiobook together. Are
there any apps that would allowers to do this on iPhone and are accessible?

Thanks for all your help kind regards Trey
