2021-08-15 Thread William James

I was looking at this thread last night and did a search for Zoomax’s braille
display manual some time ago. I could not get to it last night. I did get it
today and here is the manual for those of you who are curious about this device.

from NLS, rather than going through the extra steps of downloading it through
Bard mobile then putting it on the card.

I have had the eReader from NLS made by Humanware for about three days.
My impressions are below, in no particular order.
1. The neck strap is cheap and not at all comfortable. It is too skinny, and
made out of a very rough material.
2. There are two space bars that for me, are not positioned well. I use my
right thumb for pressing the space bar and I find its position slightly too
far to the right.
3. There are cursor routing buttons over each of the 20 cells, but no
markers every 5 like on most displays with routing buttons.
4. The keyboard is ergonomically designed with the slight curve. The space
bars are below the braille cells, which is fine for me but I know some
people prefer the space bar closer to the keyboard.
The keys have more play in them than I expected. They feel a little spongy.
5. The case makes it look like a hardback book. It opens just like a book
cover, with the spine on the back of the unit leaving the front thumb keys
exposed. The best word I can think of is, "cute."
6. The braille feels better to me than on the Humanware braille note touch
plus, but not quite as good as on the Orbit Readers.
7. It does not have a note taker, but can be connected to a computer or a
smart phone to be used as a braille keyboard.
8. The setup for Bluetooth devices is much like other Humanware displays.
It follows Humanware's logic, which is not my logic, but following the
instructions did work.
9. NLS BARD login and download is very straight forward.
10. Changing braille grades is slow. Press Space+g and you have to wait
about 6 or 7 seconds before the grade shows up, Then, once the one you want
is on the display, wait another 6 or 7 seconds for the display to go back to
what you were doing.
11. when used as a braille input device with an iPhone SE 2020, it works
pretty much as well as all displays work, which is very good.
12. The battery life seems to be maybe 6 or 8 hours, hard to be sure yet.
13. There is no internet browser, Wi-Fi is used for downloading BARD books
and updating the firmware.
14. The wi-Fi set up was pretty straight forward, as Humanware devices go.
15. I have not tried using it with the computer.
16. It takes approximately 20 seconds to start up and about 17 seconds to
shut down. Probably due to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions, I am not
sure.

To get an eReader from NLS you have to contact your regional library for the
blind and sign up for braille materials, and then request the eReader. If
you already receive braille materials, simply contact them and ask how to
get sign up for an eReader if your library is participating in the program
that is..
At this point, it is still considered a pilot program and you have to agree
to participate in several surveys at 2, 4, and 6 months after receiving the
device and of course, to return it if you are not going to use it. If you
want, you can keep it after the pilot project is finished.

I'll add to what Lyne has already posted. Go to your app library which resides
on the last page of your home screen. When on one of the pages of your home
screen, you can get to it by doing a three finger swipe left until you hear app
library. When you've reached the app library page, touch in the middle of your
screen and do a three finger swipe down. This will open an alphabetized list of
all the apps in your library. You can single finger swipe right to review each
of them individually, use the vertical scroll bar to move among them, or use
the search box at the top to find one by name.

Good luck.

Hello,
You probably erase it and now only available in your library. Go to library,

How do I turn Automatic Updates On or OFF on iPhone 7 with latest iOS installed.

2021-08-15 Thread Kevin Gibbs
My wife and I want to know how you can choose the setting to have Facebook and
Facebook Messenger update automatically or not on iPhone 7.

I look at my available updates every day and I think I’ve seen options for
choosing Automatic Updates whenever there is an available update for either FB
or FB Messenger. Currently, both of these apps are up to date on both our
devices. So, I don’t have an option there. Is there. Way to go somewhere and
turn Auto Updates ON or OFF within either FB or the App Store?

Thanks,
Kevin

RE: NLS eReader by Humanware observations

2021-08-15 Thread Richard Turner
Updated version with the info about the cursor routing buttons made more clear.

I have had the eReader from NLS made by Humanware for about three days.
My impressions are below, in no particular order.
1. The neck strap is cheap and not at all comfortable. It is too skinny, and
made out of a very rough material.
2. There are two space bars that for me, are not positioned well. I use my
right thumb for pressing the space bar and I find its position slightly too far
to the right.
3. There are cursor routing buttons over each of the 20 cells, but no markers
every 5 like on most displays with routing buttons.
4. The keyboard is ergonomically designed with the slight curve. The space bars
are below the braille cells, which is fine for me but I know some people prefer
the space bar closer to the keyboard.
It
follows Humanware's logic, which is not my logic, but following the
instructions did work.
9. NLS BARD login and download is very straight forward.
10. Changing braille grades is slow. Press Space+g and you have to wait about
6 or 7 seconds before the grade shows up, Then, once the one you want is on the
display, wait another 6 or 7 seconds for the display to go back to what you
were doing.
11. when used as a braille input device with an iPhone SE 2020, it works
pretty much as well as all displays work, which is very good.
12. The battery life seems to be maybe 6 or 8 hours, hard to be sure yet.
13. There is no internet browser, Wi-Fi is used for downloading BARD books and
updating the firmware.
14. The wi-Fi set up was pretty straight forward, as Humanware devices go.
15. I have not tried using it with the computer.
16. It takes approximately 20 seconds to start up and about 17 seconds to shut
down. Probably due to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions, I am not sure.

To get an eReader from NLS you have to contact your regional library for the
blind and sign up for braille materials, and then request the eReader. If you
already receive braille materials, simply contact them and ask how to get sign
up for an eReader if your library is participating in the program that is..
At this point, it is still considered a pilot program and you have to agree to
participate in several surveys at 2, 4, and 6 months after receiving the device
and of course, to return it if you are not going to use it. If you want, you
can keep it after the pilot project is finished.
Oregon seems to be getting the Humanware device; some states are getting the
one from Zoomax.
There are YouTube videos walking through each device, settings, how to…, etc..
Here is the physical description link for the Humanware device:

Here is the physical description link for the Zoomax device:

Hello Adam,

Please do not post beta software issues in this forum.

I suggest that you join the public beta lists so that you may find all the help
you need on beta topics.

Thank you,

Hi all,
I sign in, download the profile and then restart my phone.
There is no downloaded profile even though the download was successful.
It seems whenever I restart my phone the profile is deleted.
If I check to see if the profile is there before restarting it is.
Wondering what I'm missing?

There are YouTube videos walking through each device, settings, how to..., etc..
Here is the physical description link for the Humanware device:
https://www.loc.gov/item/webcast-9336/

Here is the physical description link for the Zoomax device:

Re: Problem with the LA Times app on one phone but not the other one

2021-08-15 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I don't mean to make you feel bad, but I decided to load it onto my SE 2 to
find out how it acted. I do not have a subscription so I can't say how, or if
that would make a difference, but I was able to use it fine. I then closed it
out of the app switcher and restarted it, with the same results. About the only
things left to try are reset your phone, reset network settings, then the reset
all settings. If you have to go that route, do it when you have sighted
assistance in case voice over doesn't come back on. It does for most people, it
didn't come back on for me the one time I did it. Hey, that app and voice over
in your 10R are just prejudiced against each other.

Even though you turned off Screen recognition, did you double check under the

YouMail is primarily available in the US and apparently it is available in
Canada if you are with one of the big 3 providers, Telus, Bell or Rogers.
When you do a search on Google for "Is Youmail available outside the United
States", you get the following:

Aug. 3, 2021 — YouMail supports AT, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile,
as well as many other U.S. carriers

On their website there is a place where you can enter your mobile number
and it says they will then text you a link to download the app, but when I
did I was told my number was not in service or something like that. My
provider in Canada is Koodo which is owned by Telus, it's a bit cheaper, but
it apparently does not support this. One other complaint I have with Koodo
is that even though it's owned by Telus and runs on the same network there
still is no support for adding a cellular Apple Watch to your plan.
Otherwise I am quite happy with the service, I pay $50 a month and get
unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, basic voice mail and 9 Gb of
data. But plans are always changing and if at some point Telus has a good
offer or promo I may change back because I'd gladly pay $10/month to add my
Apple Watch so I'm able t take calls in situations when I don't have or want
to bring my iPhone.

Your Apple Watch can only save your life later if you turn on these features

2021-08-15 Thread Dennis Long

Taken from the link at the end of the article.

I'm not surprised anymore when I see stories of people who say the Apple
Watch saved their lives. From fall detection to heart-rate monitoring, that
little piece of tech can spotlight issues that could go unnoticed with fatal
consequences.

Of course, you need to make sure your other gadgets are ready to aid you in
an emergency, too. Tap or click for built-in phone settings that make it
easier to call 911, alert others of medical conditions, and more
 .

Now, grab your Apple Watch and let's get the must-have health features set
up.

First, set up the Health app

Your Apple Watch works in tandem with your iPhone, so you need to start
there. The Health app allows you to enter details about your body, like your
height, weight and blood type. There are several other options you can
choose to include or skip. Here's how to access it:

*   Open the Health app.
* Select your profile picture in the top right-hand corner.
*   Click on Health Details.
*   Enter your information.

Check your heart rate

While your Apple Watch won't give you a perfect reading of your heart rate,
it can give you a close estimate. To check, open the Heart Rate app on your
Apple Watch. You will see your current heart rate, resting rate, and walking
average rate.

As long as your watch is on, it takes regular readings of your heart rate
and saves the data. If you want to view previous heart rates, press the
arrow in the upper left corner of the app.

Take an electrocardiogram

With an Apple Watch Series 4 or later , you can
take an electrocardiogram, an ECG or EKG. This test records the timing and
strength of your heartbeat. Doctors often use these tests to look for
irregularities.

An important note: This feature is not a replacement for seeing your
physician. Always consult a doctor if you feel uncomfortable or notice a
change in your heart's rhythm or any other aspect of your health.

You'll first need to install and set up the ECG app. Here's how:

* Open the Health app on your iPhone.
* Tap the Browse tab, then tap Heart > Electrocardiograms (ECG) > Set
Up ECG App.
* After you complete the setup, open the ECG app.

If you still don't see the app on your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on
your iPhone and tap Heart. In the ECG section, tap Install.

How to take an ECG:

* Make sure your Apple Watch is snug and on the wrist that you
selected in the Apple Watch app. To check, open the Apple Watch app, tap the
My Watch tab, then go to General > Watch Orientation.
* Open the ECG app on your watch.
* Rest your arms on a table or in your lap.
* With the hand opposite your watch, hold your finger on the Digital
Crown (the small dial on the side of your watch). You don't need to press
the Digital Crown during the session.
* Wait. The recording takes 30 seconds. At the end of the recording,
you will receive a classification; then you can tap Add Symptoms and choose
your symptoms.
* Tap Save to note any symptoms, then tap Done.

Fall detection

Do a quick search and you'll see how many lives this feature has saved. Once
turned on, if the watch detects a fall, it can contact emergency services to
get you help. To set it up:

*   Open the Watch app.
*   Swipe down.
*   Select Emergency SOS.
* Tap the switch to enable Fall Detection.

Now that Fall Detection is enabled, it will sound an alarm if you fall. If
you don't respond, Apple will contact emergency services.

Set up Medical ID

Everyone needs to do this step. You can create your Medical ID in the iPhone
Health app and store it on your watch. Open the Health app and tap on the
Medical ID option. You can add your past medical history, allergies,
medications and any other details in the event of an emergency.

Blood oxygen sensor

If you have the Apple Watch Series 6 , you can
monitor your blood oxygen levels. The watch comes with a built-in oximeter
to let you know if you have a healthy amount of oxygen circulating in your
blood. Again, don't use this in place of a doctor if you are experiencing
any breathing-related issues.

When tracking your blood oxygen level, you should see a number between 95
and 100. If you get repeat readings lower than that, contact your doctor.

To set this up:

* Open the Health app on your iPhone.
* Tap the Browse tab, then tap Respiratory > Blood Oxygen > Set up
Blood Oxygen.
* After you complete setup, open the Blood Oxygen app on your Apple
Watch.

To take a blood oxygen measurement:

* Make sure that your watch is snug but still comfortable.
* Open the Blood Oxygen app on your Apple Watch.
* Stay still. Keep your wrist flat, with the watch facing up.
* Tap Start. Keep your arm steady for 15 seconds. At the end of the

I have been a subscriber to the Los Angeles times for a while now. I use the
app on my phone. However, with my 10 R, the app appears to load but nothing is
showing up on the screen for voiceover. With my older 7+, the app blows as it
should and everything shows up. I’m running the same version of the operating
system on both devices, and I have reinstalled the app on my 10r to no avail. I
don’t get it. Has anyone seen this problem with an app? How to fix it?

RE: voicemail not working since latest IOS update?

2021-08-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
YouMail is primarily available in the US and apparently it is available in
Canada if you are with one of the big 3 providers, Telus, Bell or Rogers.
When you do a search on Google for "Is Youmail available outside the United

I can get to speak are the top of screen status bar items. if I do the
home

gesture, that works, and things start working, until I go back in to the
phone app, when the same thing happens before the phone app stops working
and the phone goes back to the home screen, so can only assume that the
phone app crashed or something.
they are both iPhone x, and have tried this at least 3 times on each
phone,

always with the same result.

Re: unable to install public beta on iOS.

2021-08-15 Thread Richard Turner
Sorry, I should not have replied.
You should not be discussing the beta on a public list.
Please join the public beta list.

You have to install it not just download it.

 Hi all,

There is no downloaded profile even though the download was successful.
It seems whenever I restart my phone the profile is deleted.
If I check to see if the profile is there before restarting it is.
Wondering what I'm missing?
