October 18 Apple Event

2021-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am surprised that I didn't find a single message tonight about this morning's
Apple Event. I didn't have time yet to listen, but saw a few headlines about
new Airpods, HomePods with new colours, better SIRI integration with Apple
Music and a new "voice only" subscription for Apple Music in addition to the
personal and family plans. This one apparently is only $4.99 US a month and
gives you access to all 90 Million songs Apple has plus all their curated
playlists, any idea how this is different from a regular subscription? Does it
mean you can't open the music app and find music this way or maybe you can play
anything, but can't add anything to your library or download it?

The rest apparently was all Mac related which is of no interest to me as a
Windows/PC user.

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2021-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

There is one mistake in your list of commands, you write:

* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.

On an iPhone without a home button you push and hold the power button which is
also called side button for SIRI. In order to power off the phone you press and
hold the side button and volume down button at the same time until the power
off menu appears, this menu also includes the SOS/9 1 1 call button so make
sure you are not on it but to swipe right all the way until you get to "Power
Off" before you double tap.

I find telling
SIRI to "Open General Settings" and to then do a 4-finger tap near the bottom
of the screen is just as easy, this puts focus straight on the shutdown button,
but you still get the same menu except that focus is at least for me reliably
on the power off button if you do it this way.

gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

This is taken from my version of the VoiceOver Gestures which is on my web site.
But here is the sections relating to phones with no home buttons.

For devices without a home button:
Side button replacing Home button commands
* Unlock Phone: Facial Recognition, or tap the Side button and enter
your passcode
* Accessibility Shortcut: Triple click of the Side button
* Screenshot: Simultaneously press and quickly release the Side button
and Volume Up button. Caution: if you hold the volume up and side power button
too long, you will activate the Emergency SOS and end up calling 911.
  * Activate Siri: Press and hold the Side button
* Reboot the iPhone: Press and release the volume up button, then the
volume down button, then hold in the side/power button for about 10 seconds or
until the Apple comes back and gradually fills in the image.
* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.
* Activate Apple Pay: Double click the Side button

New Gestures replacing function of the Home button Starting at the bottom of
the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel three haptic vibrations
referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click" when pressing the Home
button). Each of these three clicks will activate a function. Note: The first
click alerts you that you are in the feature.
* Return to the Home screen: From the bottom of the screen slide one
finger up until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate the App Switcher: From the bottom of the screen, slide one
finger up until the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate Reachability mode (if enabled in Settings): From the bottom of
the screen, slide one finger up until you feel the first click. Quickly flick
down.

Notification and Control Center

Starting at the top of the screen, slide one finger down to feel the clicks.
* Access the Control Center: From the top of the screen, slide one finger
down until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Access the Notification Center: From the top of the screen, slide one
finger down until the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.

Other settings
Raise to Wake, under Settings, Display and Brightness, defaults to on.
If you find that your phone is constantly trying to "wake" up or unlock, and
perhaps the battery is not giving you the time you thought it should, try
turning that feature off. If you use VoiceOver, and it is constantly saying
the time whenever you move the iPhone, you probably have raise to wake on and
each time the phone moves, it is trying to wake up.
People who carry their phone in a bag or a purse may find it is constantly
waking up from the movement of the bag/purse.

There is also a feature called Tap to Wake, under Settings, Accessibility,
Touch, that allows you to wake up the phone by tapping in the middle of the
screen with one finger.

Containers are areas on the screen, on an iPad the left and right windows are
separate containers as is the dock and the main home screen. I am pretty sure
by default containers is in the rotor, just go to it and then flick left or
right.

I actually have the new iPad mini on order. Could you explain what containers
are and how you would navigate them. Do you swipe left and right the same as
you do with other elements? Thanks for the assist.

Hi, I have these, I liked them from the start.

www.blindshell.com is their site I think, worth checking.

they have 3 main button models; plus one they call the "Boroque" I think,
hwich implements the BS on a touch screen. Tapping on virtual number buttons
repeatedly to get letter is bit of a nonsense.

But the 3 button versions are good.
The original is a little smaller and would be regarded as a feature phone
maybe, the Classic 2 is a bit chunkier and a more robust and spaced number pad
which feels a lot better and does have some app options like you'd expect on
current smartt phone. I opted for fB Messenger and whatsapp.

Browser has a good range of navigation options and so easy to toggle on the
number keys, then up/down buttons to move by that increment.
default/headings/controls, links/words/landmarks. then top of page, continuous
read, bottom of page.
The last 3 set things too. bak/title/help.
Adopted this as casual browser when pc not on.

The third model is the light, priced accordingly though no idea how much, but
is just a phone with basic phone features, all of which at least talk -
dial/sms/contacts mainly, but just dial has 3 lists or sources of number to
dial.
Thay all have the SOS button on back and hot dial by pres-and-hold on the 10
digit buttons.

I'm very happy with this model and decommissioned an iPhone for the simm out
ofit.
Micro-simm, not nano.

Worth checkin on site about the Light sicne it might have
clock/timer/alarm/stopwatch and the like.

Hth, RobH.

the small buttons on the upper right front area of the keyboard. There are two
buttons, one for an IOS keyboard and one for a PC keyboard.

I hope this helps.

When in settings, the main settings list is on the left, whatever is selected
there, will show up on the right hapf of the screen.

Navigating by containers may help, but just touch on the right half of the
screen and you should find what you want.

RE: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2021-10-18 Thread Carolyn
Eleanor, press the Power Button three times to get VoiceOver to come on.

I never missed the Home Button at all ever. I[m probably old enough to be your
grandmother, so my bet is that you'll do fine with the phone.

Richard's instructions will show you exactly how. Believe me when I tell you,
it just sounds frustrating, but it is not, and it does work.

Subject: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures
I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

Hi all

Apologies for this, as I’m sure many of you will probably think I’m seriously
behind the times. Basically, I’m getting a new IPhone as part of a job I do
with/for my local council. Problem is that this new IPhone doesn’t have a
physical home button.

I’ve never encountered this before, as I’ve always gone out of my way to make
sure that my phone has the physical button. However, this phone isn’t my
choice, and I’m actually very nervous about getting it.

So was just wondering if anyone could e-mail me a really idiot-proof list of
instructions so that I can stand half a chance of managing to operate this
buttonless phone?? Any help really really would be very much appreciated. For
example, when setting up the phone in the very first place how on earth do I
get VO to come on?? (Normally I’d just tripple tap the home button, and it’s
sorted … but with this I’ve no idea). How do I go about switching apps with no
button? How do I go about turning VO on/off with no button if I need to? The
list is endless.

So sorry If I’m coming across as a total idiot, but this phone doesn’t belong
to me and I’m really really scared of making a total mess of it when I get it.
So any help/lists of gestures/explanations of how to do anything, no matter how
basic, really would be most gratefully received and very much appreciated.

Thanks so much everyone.

Eleanor

RE: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2021-10-18 Thread Richard Turner

New Gestures replacing function of the Home button
Starting at the bottom of the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel
three haptic vibrations referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click"
when pressing the Home button). Each of these three clicks will activate a
function. Note: The first click alerts you that you are in the feature.

I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

Hi all

Apologies for this, as I'm sure many of you will probably think I'm seriously
behind the times. Basically, I'm getting a new IPhone as part of a job I do
with/for my local council. Problem is that this new IPhone doesn't have a
physical home button.

I've never encountered this before, as I've always gone out of my way to make
sure that my phone has the physical button. However, this phone isn't my
choice, and I'm actually very nervous about getting it.

(Normally I'd just tripple tap the home button, and it's
sorted ... but with this I've no idea). How do I go about switching apps with
no button? How do I go about turning VO on/off with no button if I need to? The
list is endless.

So sorry If I'm coming across as a total idiot, but this phone doesn't belong
to me and I'm really really scared of making a total mess of it when I get it.
So any help/lists of gestures/explanations of how to do anything, no matter how
basic, really would be most gratefully received and very much appreciated.

Thanks so much everyone.

I have an iPad mini. It’s not the very newest one but the one prior to that.
My dock is actually at the bottom of the screen, like my iPhone.

I do find that navigating by containers can really be helpful on the iPad.

RE: Has anyone activated a new iPhone to use eSim instead of a physical SIM?

2021-10-18 Thread Alan Lemly
HI Brenda,

I suspect you might be right about eSIM only working on Verizon postpaid
accounts. I ended up not even attempting to activate my new iPhone 13 Mini
using the eSIM option. I had ordered a physical SIM from Verizon which was good
since my account is Verizon Prepaid. I had a hard enough time getting my new
iPhone activated on Verizon which I attribute to attempting to do it with my
old mobile phone which was using the same phone number as the new phone I was
attempting to set up. I should have figured out this wasn’t going to work but
until I got disconnected in the middle of the process, I did not make the
connection, pun intended. Fortunately, I had an available landline I was able
to use to complete the process with Verizon help. Next time, I’ll use my
computer and the Verizon website to activate a new iPhone.

I am on the Apple upgrade program. I used the Esim to activate my service
transfer from the 12 to the 13. I am on Verizon also, but on a postpaid
account. It’s working fine, but I kind of wish I could just have kept the
physical sim, which is a lot easier to deal with in the event of repair issues,
beta testing that goes bad, etc. I don’t think they offer Esim on the prepaid
lines though, but I could be wrong on this.

SIM?

Hi List,

I realize the answer to my question might vary considerably depending on
country of location and mobile service carrier. I’ve ordered a new iPhone 13
Mini and since I have a Verizon Prepaid account, I was unable to specify
Verizon as my carrier when ordering using the Apple Store app. The order would
fail each time the app attempted to confirm my Verizon account so I had to
select the option to purchase the phone for use on any carrier. Phones ordered
in this way come with no SIM card. I understand from the email Apple sent me
indicating my iPhone had shipped that I can use eSIM when activating it. I’m
curious whether anyone on this list has gone the eSIM route when activating a
new iPhone containing no physical SIM. If you have, I’d love to hear what the
steps were to do and how your experience was.

I’ve been advised not to transfer my existing SIM from my SE 2020 to the 13
Mini so I do have a new physical SIM which I got Verizon to mail me. I’ll use
that if the eSIM activation doesn’t work.

Thanks in advance for any comments eSIM users can share.

iPad Question?

2021-10-18 Thread Fazil
Hi, Group.

I have iPad Mini.

This morning, I asked Siri to go to Accessibility in Settings and she opened
accessibility. I turned Audio description on there and then I ended being
out of that Accessibility settings. I tried to go back there but I could not
because Voiceover kept saying selected with Accessibility and VO did not
open Accessibility for me I kept it double-tapping though. So, can I not
open anything selected in Settings in iPad?

Thanks!

Re: off topic: Blind shell phone

2021-10-18 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Hi, I have these, I liked them from the start.

www.blindshell.com is their site I think, worth checking.

they have 3 main button models; plus one they call the "Boroque" I think,
hwich implements the BS on a touch screen. Tapping on
virtual number buttons repeatedly to get letter is bit of a nonsense.

But the 3 button versions are good.
The original is a little smaller and would be regarded as a feature phone
maybe, the Classic 2 is a bit chunkier and a more robust
and spaced number pad which feels a lot better and does have some app options
like you'd expect on current smartt phone. I opted
for fB Messenger and whatsapp.

Browser has a good range of navigation options and so easy to toggle on the
number keys, then up/down buttons to move by that
increment. default/headings/controls, links/words/landmarks. then top of page,
continuous read, bottom of page.
The last 3 set things too. bak/title/help.
Adopted this as casual browser when pc not on.

The third model is the light, priced accordingly though no idea how much, but
is just a phone with basic phone features, all of
which at least talk - dial/sms/contacts mainly, but just dial has 3 lists or
sources of number to dial.

Hth, RobH.

RE: activating MBraille on a new iPhone

2021-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
I'm not sure of the current pricing, you can check that on the app store.
Be sure you check everything the description in the app store says and see if
there is a button about in-app purchases at the end so you can read any details
about options.

Third party keyboards are added by going to Settings, General, Keyboard, and at
the top is a place that shows the number of keyboards, most people by default
have 2, the standard onscreen keyboard and the emoji keyboard.
Double tap there and there will be an add keyboard button.
If you have an app installed that can function as an onscreen keyboard, double
tap it.
Then, if you want the new keyboard to have full access to the system, you
double tap on its name after you have added it, and turn on permissions, which
gives you a warning that the developer may be able to see what you write

RE: [EXTERNAL] Has anyone activated a new iPhone to use eSIM instead of a physical SIM?

2021-10-18 Thread Brent Harding
Yes, that EID number, I think, is around 32 digits long or something like that.
As a small tip, this is one of those occasions where I’d use the 3-finger tap 4
times after flicking right on that about page to the EID to copy exactly what
VO said to the clipboard. One can then either paste it in the box they need it
in and then go back and delete the extra garbage that gets in, or paste it into
notes or another edit area first. That command literally copies exactly what VO
spoke, so that’s why I said there could be extra junk added with it that would
need to get edited out, or the form will probably say the number isn’t valid.

hi ALAN,

Yes, I did this successfully. I did have cited help at the time, but there
really wasn’t much about the process that made me concerned that I could not
have done it. Originally, I had been told I needed to take a photograph of a QR
code, but that did not prove necessary in this process that I was guided
through.

I did this by contacting Verizon phone support. I went to the My Verizon app,
and in the lower right hand corner there was either a moor or a contact button.
When I ultimately found the contact button, I access them through the schedule
a return call. I did this on four occasions for variety of purposes, and each
time I was called back within three minutes. The representatives were very
helpful.

my only concern about doing this independently, was at one point I needed to
enter a very long series of digits from the about page of Settings, and in my
experience that can be somewhat tenuous relying on voiceover. At least for me.

The phone has been working great ever cents.

I hope this helps. Good luck. Keith

Hi List,

I realize the answer to my question might vary considerably depending on
country of location and mobile service carrier. I’ve ordered a new iPhone 13

Subject: Old List Messages Reappeared

Hi Everyone,

When I looked at my email this morning I realized that a lot of old list
messages had reappeared in my inbox. This happened around 3:09 through about
3:13 am, I guess eastern time. Did anyone else experience this, or was this a
problem with Comcast or something of mine?

Thanks for any information.

Take care and stay safe!

Re: [EXTERNAL] Has anyone activated a new iPhone to use eSIM instead of a physical SIM?

2021-10-18 Thread 'Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.' via VIPhone
hi ALAN,
Yes, I did this successfully.

Good luck. Keith

RE: Has anyone activated a new iPhone to use eSim instead of a physical SIM?

2021-10-18 Thread brent
I am on the Apple upgrade program. I used the Esim to activate my service
transfer from the 12 to the 13. I am on Verizon also, but on a postpaid
account. It’s working fine, but I kind of wish I could just have kept the
physical sim, which is a lot easier to deal with in the event of repair issues,
beta testing that goes bad, etc. I don’t think they offer Esim on the prepaid
lines though, but I could be wrong on this.

Hi, Group.
I purchased an app other day which is not supported much by Voiceover. So I
went to Apple Website and requested for refund. I did not delete that app yet.
I got the email and was told that my refund was approved but the money was not
credited back to my creditcard. This email I got four days ago and the money is
not back yet, is it because I did not delete the app yet?
Thanks!

When I looked at my email this morning I realized that a lot of old list
messages had reappeared in my inbox. This happened around 3:09 through about
3:13 am, I guess eastern time. Did anyone else experience this, or was this
a problem with Comcast or something of mine?

Thanks for any information.

Take care and stay safe!

Debby
