RE: Apple IPhone 13 Pro Max VS. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Your message came through, if you didn't receive a response it is most likely
because nobody felt they had the information you required. This is an iPhone
list after all and while I know a number of people also have Android devices it
is maybe not so likely somebody would drop $1,000 or more on an iPhone and the
same on the latest and greatest Android phone. I think nowadays any of these
high-end phones are very good and what is more the technology in them is much
more mature than even 6 years ago and in my opinion you should probably decide
which platform you feel more comfortable with and especially since you had both
Android phones and iPhones you probably have a preference; I wouldn't worry too
much about the hardware as most regular users never come even close to
exhausting the capabilities of what the processors nowadays are capable of.
Just my thoughts.

Subject: Apple IPhone 13 Pro Max VS. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
Importance: High

Hello,

I’ve been both an IPhone and Android user respectively over the past ten years
– first IPhone from November of 2011 to June of 2013, then again for a brief
period from June of 2014 through January of 2015; and Android first from June
of 2013 through June of 2014, then January of 2015 through to present day.
Most people who have known me during the last few years and even earlier back
into the late 2000’s with the late Windows Mobile devices will recall I usually
am one of the ones who does her research and helps others out with their
issues. Now though, it’s me who could use a little help.

I’m doing some research and don’t want to miss anything like I did six years
ago. I want to research the differences between the most high-end IPhone 13
Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy equivalent, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.
Both are 5G capable devices, both come in the storage capacities I’m interested
in. Specifically I’m looking at the following:

1. Battery life: In looking at the two devices, I have found several
differing writeups on the internet claiming either of the devices is better
than the other, but not giving any real specifics from the viewpoint of a user
who uses accessibility features such as VoiceOver on IOS and TalkBack on
Android. I want to know which of these devices’ batteries is more long-lasting
with the use of the accessibility features running. If anyone has information
about the battery usage without the accessibility features running as well, so
much the better. I can make an even better-informed decision at the end of the
day.

2. RAM/Processor speed: I’m looking specifically at RAM/processor speed
and how fast each device measures up in a truly fair comparison. Which of
these devices will ultimately be able to be used and not lag too much both with
and/or without the accessibility features running? I’ve also read differing
opinions on this and with each of these devices being named the truly better
device. I’d like to see how much of what I’ve discovered thus far is fact as
opposed to fiction as opposed to simple preference and opinion but not based on
facts of device performance.

3. Storage: While internal capacity on both devices is equivalent in so
far as I can get, I believe, the capacity internally I want on each of these
two devices, I don’t believe there’s too much to compare here since it is my
understanding that the slot for the MicroSD Card on the Samsung Galaxy S21
Ultra and going forward is being or has finally truly been done away with. I
did do some research and so far have found some differing opinions on this of
whether the forthcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra will or will not ultimately have the
SD Card slot. Either way, it doesn’t make too much a difference to me, as if I
can get either of these devices in 512 GB or even better the 1TB internal
capacity, then I won’t have much need for memory expansion. I already have
cloud storage with both Apple and Google, and can access my google cloud
storage from Apple if the need should arise and I run out of my ICloud storage
(highly unlikely).

Six years ago I got what I was told clearly by someone looking to make a sale
that the IPhone 5S was the equivalent to the Samsumg Galaxy S5 device in every
way, shape, and form. This was proven

RE: syncing Data Across the Devices Without iTune?

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You may have to be more specific here as to what data you exactly mean, but the
short answer is that you sync via iCloud as long as whatever app or apps you
are referring to support iCloud syncing.
There may also be apps like Audible which simply sync things like the place
where you stopped listening to a book via their own service and as long as you
are signed it to Audible on 2 or 3 different devices using the same Audible
account it will be fine.
The same applies to email if you use Gmail or Outlook.com, I have an
Outlook.com account and use Exchange for my business and all I have to do is
set up my account on a new device and all my emails, contacts and everything
syncs to the new device from Microsoft servers.

Six years ago I got what I was told clearly by someone looking to make a
sale that the IPhone 5S was the equivalent to the Samsumg Galaxy S5 device
in every way, shape, and form. This was proven to be false, as I would
later find within three weeks of owning the IPhone 5S, the speed of the
device/reaction time was less than half that of the Samsung Galaxy S5. Keep
in mind, this was six years ago, and things in both camps have changed
significantly since then.

I'm with T-Mobile now by default, as Sprint was bought out by them, and
eventually everything that hasn't as of yet will be switched completely over
to T-Mobile. Ultimately, I'm looking to upgrade my phone for a couple
reasons.

First, I'm buying my current Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G device outright and
will be giving it, temporarily, to my husband who needs a 5G device and has
zero trade-in value for his current device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10
Ultra. This happened because we weren't given the option for him to opt in
and buy his phone outright, and he's now only renting the phone since his
leas ended back in February.

Second, ever since the buy-out of Sprint by T-Mobile, I've gone through two
sets of CIM Cards on both my and my husband's phones, and we're experiencing
issues with our current devices, his far worse than mine since his CIM card
is a 5G but his phone is not a 5G-capable

Deleting notifications on one device but they still show up on all my other ones

2021-10-28 Thread Mary Otten
I have an Apple Watch SE, my iPhone XR, which is the working iPhone, and an old
iPhone 7 Plus, which I still use because it works, but it does not have a Sim
card anymore. The watch is paired with my newer phone. I have been irritated by
the fact that if I see a notification on one device and get rid of it, I will
then see it on my other devices and have to get rid of it there as well.
Surely, there must be a setting or someway where if you trash a notification or
a text message on one device, it should go away on all the others. Isn’t that
one of the supposed advantages of all this connectivity and iCloud etc.? It’s a
huge time waster all this double and triple deleting of notifications and texts.
I realize I could set up certain notifications for this device in certain other
ones for that device etc., but doesn’t that defeat the supposed advantages of
all this interconnectivity? Isn’t the point of all these devices to be able to
see what you want if you’re out and about or wherever, get rid of it and have
done with it? What the heck am I missing?

I found it’s easier to set this up on the phone under the watch app,

They list things now in a crazy some what odd way,

But if you open the list of complications then scrole through you should find

Carolyn,

Open the messages app.
Find & tap on the message that you want to block.
Go to the top of the page & swipe to the email address or the phone number of
the person who sent the message.
Tap on the email address or phone number.
A menu will appear, swipe down to Info & tap.
Swipe down to Block This Caller & tap.
I think that you may have to tap to confirm.
---
If the message has multiple recipients, you will have to copy the first email
address or phone number in the list of recipients of the message. Then go to
settings, phone & swipe down to Blocked Callers & paste the copied info into
the edit field to add the messager to the Block list.

Re: pairing my focus 40 blue with my iPhone

2021-10-28 Thread Donald Raikes
Ah that was the trick. When I went under voiceover braille and paired
it there it worked.

Thanks for the tip. Now I just wish there were a quick/easy way to
switch which device I am paired with laptop, iPhone or iPad. But I
suppose without buying a new braille display that can handle multiple
bluetooth connections enabling and disabling bluetooth is my best
option :-)

RE: Adding COVID-19 vaccination passport to Apple Wallet in iOS 15.1

So, can I show it on my iPhone8 and scan the code with iPad?

Does BC-ID have code too?

Thanks!

Subject: Adding COVID-19 vaccination passport to Apple Wallet in iOS 15.1

Hello Fazil,

I started a new thread here because this has nothing to do with reading
character by character.

No, you can't upload the file as far as I know, the QR code on the card has to
be scanned and at least I found the only way to do this is to display the card
on a second screen or to have a print out.

When I did mine I displayed it on my laptop screen and used the Code Scanner
option, when I then added my wife's on her phone I decided to try a different
approach and I printed out her vaccine passport and used the camera app.

In my opinion using Code Scanner is easier because it captures the code
automatically as soon as it sees it whereas with the camera app Voiceover told
me a QR code was present, but I then realized after nothing happened that there
was a button which I think was labelled "Capture QR Code" and I had to tap
that. But once I did it also worked.

If you want to use Code Scanner this is not an app per say, you have to access
it via the Control Centre similar to how you access the Flashlight which is
also not an app but a feature.

This means you may have to add it to the Control Panel because I can't remember
if it is there by default. I would first bring up Control Centre and check, if
it is not there go to Settings > Control Centre, look for it under the "More
Controls" heading and then double tap on where it says "Insert Code Scanner".

Regardless whether you use Code Scanner or the Camera app, once the QR code is
recognized a message pops up asking if you want to add the card to Apple Wallet
and Health, just tap Add and you are done; it's super simple.

Keep in mind that here in Canada this works with vaccination passports from BC
and a few other provinces whose cards meet the standard which Apple required
for this.

If you are in Ontario and a province where this is not the case it won't work,
but for Ontario there is a third-party work-around, I had posted the link for
that in the article from iPhoneInCanada where I first read that this should be
easy to do if you are in British Columbia.

Re: pairing my focus 40 blue with my iPhone

2021-10-28 Thread Duane Steele
Hi Donald,

I guess the logical question to ask is how you are trying to re-pir the Focus
Braille display. Are you doing it by going to Accessibility, VoiceOver and then
Braille? I ask because I once forgot and tried to do it under the normal
bluetooth settings. Just wondering.

Re: how do you block texts

2021-10-28 Thread Donna Casteen

Re: app to input medical information

2021-10-28 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello Judy,

I have been looking at the subject of Lifeline here in the UK as my mother has
recently had a stroke. Unfortunately she’s still in hospital and has other
complications.

I was advised by some good friends to contact both my local councillor and
Social Services for a monitoring service.

There is a company who offer a wearable monitor and service for £12.49 a month.

Take a look at:

https://www.lifeline24.co.uk/pricing/

I would contact Social Services to see if there’s any help available to you.

All the best with your recovery and if I find out anymore information I will
happily share it with you.

So as not to clutter the list with information irrelevant to others and not
Apple related, you can contact me off-list if you wish at:

 Paula, and others,
When you open the Health app, it is probably on the summary tab.
IN the bottom right corner is the Browse tab.
Double tap on that and you will find a ton of things you can include.
Keep flicking through there and you will find medication and if you have
it syncing with your doctor’s office, you will see your list of
prescriptions already there. Otherwise, I am sure you can add it manually.
It is a bit tedious, but worth wading through all that is there.

Subject: app to input medical information

Hi all. I thought I could put all medical information such as
medications, emergency contacts, doctors’ names etc. in the health app,
but I haven’t found out how to do that. I remember being able to input
all that stuff including allergies and physical disabilities into an app.
It was quite some time ago though. It was nice to have all that
information on my phone. Does anyone know of a voice-over friendly app
that one can use to add all that information?
 Thanks.
 God bless!

RE: Sunrise & Sunset

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I get an accurate answer if I ask either "When is Sunset" or "When is Sunrise".
Same goes for "When does the moon rise" or "When does the moon set".
When I asked "When does Mars rise" I received the answer "Mars will rise at
7:44 AM Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, October 29, 2021"
This all was asking SIRI, but both Alexa and Google Assistant answer these
questions as well.

pairing my focus 40 blue with my iPhone

2021-10-28 Thread Donald Raikes
Hi,
a very long time ago I was able to pair my focus 40 blue display with
my iPhone 8 running ios 9 maybe. My focus display stopped working so
I set it aside for a couple of years. On a whim about a week ago, I
plugged it in and tried it nad it still works with jaws on my windows
10 laptop.

I am now trying to get it to pair with my iPhone 20Se but all my
bluetooth settings say is that my versa2 is connected but it doesn't
see the focus 40 blue. I powered off and powered back on the focus
display and disabled the bluetooth on my laptop to make sure that the
display wasn't connecting to the laptop instead of my iPhone.

Does this display no longer pair with iOS?

Donald Raikes

Hi Richard,

When I did my wife's vaccine pass I tried it again with the camera app and
while Voiceover kept telling me there was a QR code present I kept expecting it
to take the photo automatically, but after a While I checked the screen more
carefully and realized that I had to tap on "Capture QR Code", once I did all
was fine, but that is one advantage if you use the Code Scanner feature, once
the QR code is seen it is captured automatically and I find this is a bit more
user friendly.

You can also go into Settings, Camera, and make sure the item Scan QR Codes is
On.

Then, theoretically, you can simply open the camera app, and point it at a QR
code and it will do what needs to be done based on that QR code.

Well I know if you use one of the newer American Siri voices that’s what
happens but if you switch to a different voice do some experimentation and it
won’t say the letter C before the word though.

Adding COVID-19 vaccination passport to Apple Wallet in iOS 15.1

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Re: app to input medical information

2021-10-28 Thread Judy Pryor
Many thanks for this Richard. To use a lifeline here in the UK I think is £15
or £20 a month. I do not really want to pay this. I will certainly look into
your suggestions.

RE: Reading By Character With Apple Magic Keyboard?

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Please bear with my ignorance, can I scan the QR Code right from File App? If
yes, how can it be done, please?
When you say Ctrl-Panel, you mean Ctrl-Center?
If you are talking about my Windows desktop, I do not have monitor with it.
Do you want me print a hard copy and take its picture?
If yes, I do not have an easy access to a sighted help where the photo can be

Fazil, did you not see my other message about simply scanning the QR code on
your card? You do not need this Pass2U Wallet app at all, if you upgraded to
15.1 all you have to do is scan the QR Code on your vaccine card and a prompt
will appear asking if you want to add it to your wallet.
You can either display the card on your computer screen and scan it there or
scan from a print out.
I find it easier to use the Code Scanner feature although you can use just the
regular ccamera app.
The easiest way to access the Code Scanner is to make sure it is added to your
Control Panel, go to Settings ?> Control Panel and check, then bring up the
Control Panel, tap on Code Scanner and scan the QR code on your vaccine card.

You do it the same way as you would when you use gestures, turn the rotor to
Characters and then instead of swiping use left and right arrow.
On a hardware keyboard you turn the rotor by pressing Up Arrow and Right arrow
together to turn it clockwise and Up Arrow and Left Arrow together to turn it
counter clockwise.

By the way, did you see my email about adding the COVID-19 vaccination pass to
your Apple Wallet and were you able to get it done?

Re: Problem with File Browser application

2021-10-28 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
There is a post on AppleVis about this very issue. It seems apple changed some
things with their SDK and it is causing issues with this program. The developer
of this app says they have a fix for it in the next update of the app.

RE: Reading By Character With Apple Magic Keyboard?

2021-10-28 Thread Fazil
Thanks much, Sieghard.

Yes, I downloaded Pass2u Wallet but I was unable to put my Vaccine Card in it.
Right now I have my BCID and Vaccine passport in File. I tried to share it and
found Pass2U Wallet in the sharesheet but got some sort of error message and
the process could not be finished.

Thanks!

RE: Sunrise & Sunset

2021-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The original poster asked for this on the Apple Watch and it is very easy to
add a Sunrise/Sunset complication to a watch face and if you wanted to do this,
you could even set it to auto speak so that every time you wake up your Apple
Watch you would have this announced.

Problem with File Browser application

2021-10-28 Thread Steve Matzura
I like its interface better than the native Files application. I don't
think it does anything Files doesn't, it's just a matter of look and
feel--OK, hear and feel. LOL.

Anyway, today I opened it and attempted to access one of my remote
storage devices. I have two--A Synology NAS, and a Windows 10 system
with two shared drives. On each storage device, I can connect, File
Browser sees the volume, but I can't open them. If I use File Browser's
Recents tab to get into things I've previously accessed, I can see a
list of places, but I can't get into any of them. I've looked on the
File Browser support page and found nothing about this problem, so it's
either very new, or I'm doing something wrong and/or stupid. Any ideas?

if the watch works the same as the phone, the sunrise and set are near the
bottom. After you get past the hourly and daily, you get to local conditions.
Sun rise and sunset are there as well as air quality, wind, pressure, feels
like, and so on. What it doesn't give and I would like are previous day's high
and low, and record highs and lows, and moon times and phase.

There used to be something with a name like "Braillewunderground" but can't get
that any longer. I think you have to pay for it.

In any case, I'm not fond of a name which derives from weather underground.
Always gave me the creeps to use it, but it gave me information I wanted.

Hi All,

That is certainly one of several ways to block text messages from a specified
source. There are at least two more ways to do this:

1) Provided the sender you want to block is in your Contacts, open the Phone
app, select the “Contacts” tab at the bottom, locate the offending contact and
open it, activate the “Edit” button and finally locate and activate the “Block”
button at the bottom of the contact dialog.

2) Or you can open “Settings” and activate the “Phone” item. Then locate and
activate the “Block Senders” button, in the resulting dialog locate and
activate the “Add” button and then simply fill in the telephone number you
desire to block.

Seems like there ought to be a simpler way to do this. I’ve done this using
both above methods and the method Dan suggested enough times that it seems easy
enough to me until I start giving written instructions!!! YIKES

to do this you first have to open a text conversation. You next double
tap on the name/phone number at the top of the screen. This will bring up a
list of choices. The user guide says to scroll down and click on the "block
this sender" button. This is not correct because this choice doesn't show up
in this list. You should find the "More info" button and click on it at this
point. You will now see a list of choices which does include the block button.
Double tap this button and you will be prompted for your confirmation of
blocking or canceling.

I have already alerted the Apple folks about this deficiency in the
user guide.

Re: app to input medical information

2021-10-28 Thread Richard Turner
Judy,
If they mean a device where you press a button and it calls a 24 hour answering
service that would dispatch whatever medical help you need; not as such.
The newer Apple Watches have a fall detection that can be activated to auto
caall emergency services if you don't respond within a minute I think.
Depending on your phone, you can set up SOS so that either tapping the power
button 5 times quickly will call emergency services, or if it has no home
button, squeezing the volume and power/side switch will do the same. The phones
with no home button, also can have the press side switch five times quickly to
make that call.

So, kind of like a life-line.
You could google emergency services on iOS or just call Apple support and ask
for exact information about this feature.

On my Apple Watch, my preferred face is called Liquid Metal. The time for sunrise or sunset, depending on current time of day, appears in the top right corner of the screen. Right now, it shows the sunset time for tonight. After the sun has gone down, it will show the time sun will rise tomorrow.

Re: Hi, not getting incoming message sound, any ideas?

2021-10-28 Thread Richard Turner
The changes in 15 have made this way more complicated than just checking
notifications.
Go to settings, Notification, Mail, and make sure allow notifications is on,
sounds on, and keep flicking to Customize Notifications.
Double tap there, and each mail account has its own settings for notifications
so you can give a unique sound to each account.
You could do this before, but it was not so well buried.
HTH,

Richard

This is since updating to the latest iOS, which I did just recently from the
latest version of iOS 14. I went through various settings with an Apple
accessibility rep, who wasn’t successful at solving this. Not that it’s a big
deal, but I liked my incoming Saud :-) thanks.
