Re: Orbit Writer

2022-03-02 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
The Hable One is brilliant for unlocking and using my iPhone while it is still
in a zipped pocket under my coat. The typing style is exactly like Braille
Screen Input which I find more tiring. And nothing beats the Orbit Writer’s
navigation wheel plus Select button, which replaces swiping and tapping in such
an uncomplicated way!

RE: Orbit Writer

2022-03-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You don't need to go into VoiceOver settings to connect the Orbit Writer. You
just need to do that once when you initially pair the Orbit Writer. After that,
it just connects automatically when you turn on the Orbit Writer. It's also
pretty simple.

The Orbit Writer basically just has 10 keys on it. Eight for the braille dots,
one for the space bar and then a multifunction key which gives you arrows,
menus, select and the like. I'm not sure how the Hable One could give you many
fewer keys then that. Plus having fewer keys isn't always a good thing. You'd
have to provide more details on why this is a good thing with the Hable One.

I got the Orbit Writer before I ever knew about the Hable One, so I didn't do a
side by side comparison. I took a look at the Hable One recently, and I
definitely liked some things about it, but since I'm not unhappy with my Orbit
Writer, I couldn't see spending another $275 for the Hable One. Note that one
advantage of the Orbit Writer is that it only costs $100.

Finally, I can see how someone could prefer one product over the other, but I
don't get how feelings could be so strong that someone would say they'd never
touch the other product. I'd never say never when it comes to technology.

RE: Looking for information about an Apple Watch 4th Gen and how to use what's on it.

2022-03-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

In addition to the great information from Jennie )see below), Brent Harbolt of
the Harbolt Company also did a paid Apple Watch tutorial recently. Here’s the
link:

Apple Watch OS Tutorial. Great for Any Level of User, Beginner, Intermediate,
or Advanced Over 4 Hours Long and Packed With Information (harboltcompany.com)

And here’s the link to the Mystic Access tutorial:

Audio Tutorial on the Apple watch | Mystic Access

The Mystic Access tutorial was updated a year or two ago. I purchased an Apple
Watch just after Christmas and I found both these tutorials very useful.

Best

Hi Kevin,

I have an AppleWatch and I’ll try to give you some information. As for the
hourly thin, i don’t think there is a way to get it to tell you what time it is
on the hour without the sound. There are some tutorials on AppleVis that were
done back in 2015 that are somewhat valuable today. You can learn about watch
faces and the like. I know that mystic access also has a paid tutorial that you
can get that is more current. Last but not least, if you read Braille or want
to download something from the National Braille press, Anna Dresner wrote a
book called Watch Without looking or something to that affect. That should get
you started. There are also a couple watch email groups that you can ask
questions to. I’ll give you the subscription address to one of them. It is:
watchosblindusersgroup+subscr...@groups.io

Thanks,

Hi all.

I received an Apple Watch 4th Gen as a gift to help me keep track of my pulse.
I’ve discovered some of how to use this watch, but I’m still unsure of a lot of
the Watch OS. I’m understanding, for example, the watch has a touch screen like
an iPhone, and I interact with it the same way I do my phone. The crown is more
of a mystery to me, and I’d like to learn more of it. In short, where can I
read about everything Apple Watch and Watch OS, and learn as much as I can
about it.

A final question I have is is there a way to get the audible tone when Siri is
activated? Right now all I get is the vibrations. I’d like to know if there’s a
way to get a vocal announcement of the hourly time on my watch? It does produce
a chime, but I’d like it to tell me what time it is.

Finally, I’d like to get a better grasp of watch faces. The one I have shows
the time and date, UV index which is blank, weather, which is also blank, and
activity which shows me how I’m doing compared to my movement goal, what
percentage I’m exercising, and what percentage I’m standing? What do other
watch faces do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

RE: Orbit Writer

2022-03-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Hmm, I'll have to take a look, but I'd think this could be changed in IOS's
keyboard or braille settings.

I too love my Orbit Writer. I like the fact that I can pair it to multiple
devise and then switch between them. The only thing I thought was a challenge,
and this isn't the fault of the device itself, is all of the keyboard commands
I tried to learn to replace any on screen gesture I might use. There's just a
lot of them and there's only so much Apple and Orbit can do to make them
intuitive.

RE: Looking for information about an Apple Watch 4th Gen and how to use what's on it.

2022-03-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I know manuals aren’t for everyone, but I personally like reading through
manuals when I get a new device, and I found the user’s guide for the Apple
Watch was pretty good. I brought it up on my iPhone so I could read it while I
was playing with my watch.

It is:

read about everything Apple Watch and Watch OS, and learn as much as I can

Re: Orbit Reader/iPhone Update

2022-03-02 Thread Duane Steele
I've only had the Orbit Reader for a week, and "stand alone" mode, which
requires using the SD card seems somewhat confusing. I'm using it specifically
with my phone and using the iPhone commands. It's purpose is to be used mostly
when traveling. I have written some notes using Voice Dream Writer and, after a
few sentences, when writing in Grade 2 Braille, the extra dots begin appearing
every few words. As yet, I haven't mastered "stand alone" mode, so I'm not sure
what I would do there. Besides, doesn't that mode only work for writing files
to the SD card? I don't know how I'd get them from the SD card to the iPhone
itself. by the way, thanks Richard for staying with me on this. Shoot me your
phone number or call me any time if you think we might resolve this issue
better by Phone. I'll keep my signature in this e-mail so you'll have my number.

RE: Orbit Reader/iPhone Update

2022-03-02 Thread Richard Turner
If you are creating a note on your Orbit in stand-alone mode, does this problem
occur?

Next, if you use the buffer edit mode and send what you have written to the
phone does the problem occur?
You cannot put hard returns in the buffer edit mode, and the VoiceOver feedback
when sending to the phone is somewhat slow, but this would be another way to
narrow down where this is happening.

Subject: Orbit Reader/iPhone Update

Hello again, Listers,

I'm continuing to play with my new Orbit Reader 20 plus and my iPhone 8, and
continuing to grapple with the extra capitalization. My latest discovery is
that if I write in computer braille grade 1, where I can view the characters
individally, the problem doesn't exist. It's only when I write in Grade 2
Braille that the extra capitals appear. I'm adept in both formats, and this is
my travel Braille display. So, my question is, is there no real answer to my
dilemma of extra capitalization? Just wondering out loud. I've done everything
that has been suggested with little result, but I'm open to further
suggestions, and wondering if others with Orbit Braille displays have
encountered similar problems.

Re: Orbit Writer

2022-03-02 Thread Kristen Steele
Hi, Brandon,

I just purchased one right before Christmas and absolutely love it. It is very
sleek and fits right in my purse. It pears almost instantly, and there is no
lag with the keyboard input. I am self-employed and always writing messages on
the go. Worth the money for sure.

Orbit Writer

2022-03-02 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
Hi,

I've been seeing discussion of the Orbit Reader on the list. This prompted me
to look up the product as I had never heard of it before.

That's when I discovered the Orbit Writer. I'm wondering if anyone here has
used it and what your impression of it is? I don't care as much right now about
having a braille display, but having an easier way to write in braille would be
useful. Any input or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brandon

Looking for information about an Apple Watch 4th Gen and how to use what's on it.

2022-03-02 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi all.

I received an Apple Watch 4th Gen as a gift to help me keep track of my pulse.
I've discovered some of how to use this watch, but I'm still unsure of a lot of
the Watch OS. I'm understanding, for example, the watch has a touch screen like
an iPhone, and I interact with it the same way I do my phone. The crown is more
of a mystery to me, and I'd like to learn more of it. In short, where can I
read about everything Apple Watch and Watch OS, and learn as much as I can
about it.

A final question I have is is there a way to get the audible tone when Siri is
activated? Right now all I get is the vibrations. I'd like to know if there's a
way to get a vocal announcement of the hourly time on my watch? It does produce
a chime, but I'd like it to tell me what time it is.

Finally, I'd like to get a better grasp of watch faces. The one I have shows
the time and date, UV index which is blank, weather, which is also blank, and
activity which shows me how I'm doing compared to my movement goal, what
percentage I'm exercising, and what percentage I'm standing? What do other
watch faces do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.

Kevin and Jilly
