The setting is gone for sure on my 13 pro max.

RE: Is Apple TV the best device to control YouTube TV?

2022-12-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello David,

Just to be clear, YouTube / YouTube Premium is a completely different product
/ service than YouTube TV.

As to your question, when viewing a YouTube video, I usually count to 5, after
the video starts, then single-finger swipe to the right, once, in order to land
on the "this ad can now be skipped", button. As of today, at least, this
method has proven to be reliable.

On a related note, what's quickest way to ditch youtube ads on iOS or iPad OS?
The button for skipping ads moves around a lot. Yes, I could pay for youtube
premium, but I usually only click 2 or 3 channels regularly so it's kind of not
worth the $11 especially since I'd rather support the creators without paying
google where I can. Thank you, I'm sure I missed this in some other thread and
searching the archive for this may not be helpful as the youtube app gets
updated practically daily.

More Libre 2

2022-12-15 Thread blazie.girl
The Libre 2 is updated but I'm still at 15.7 as I'm not sure about updating
to 16.2 yet.

Well still having issues with the iPhone and the app recognizing sensors but
did find the totally inaccessible reader and, wouldn't you know, it
recognizes the sensor. At least this sensor is working and I'm not wasting
it. Now if I could figure out the best app to read the reader's screen it
would be doable.

I have uninstalled the Libre 2 app and reinstalled, turned off and back on
the phone with no change. I have read and checked every check box and
accept button in the privacy and user agreement at least 3 times yesterday
and really don't want to do that again if I don't need to but at this point,
am not sure what else to try.

The Libre support folks have been OK but I also don't want to use up another
sensor without figuring out what else to try with the app or the phone. I
will just keep doing finger sticks or find something that can read the
reader until I have progress with the other.

I'm sure by now I sound crazy and that is kind of how I feel.

2022-12-15 Thread Cris Ali
Hi Mark,
You make a very important point. The Home Pod or Home Pod Mini need very
expensive external accessories to use as home guards. On top of that, the
speakers themselves are two or three times more expensive than third or fourth
generation echo dot. But because I live in a house, I needed a more reliable
security sensors than a listening speaker.

RE: Is Apple TV the best device to control YouTube TV?

2022-12-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

Do not be afraid of cancelling your cable service.

I have been using YouTube TV since 2020 and I can tell you that the VoiceOver
accessibility just keeps getting better and better on Apple TV.

I also enjoy my YouTube TV service on my iPad whenever I travel and the
experience is extremely VoiceOver accessible.

In fact, I will go so far as to say that if there is an area of the YouTube TV
service that is not VoiceOver accessible, I have yet to discover it on either
my Apple TV or iPad.

Before you subscribe, however, be certain to go to tv.youtube.com to make
certain that the channels you want are on offer.

Also, please know that you can always download the various apps for many
channels that may not be currently offered on YouTube TV.

Hello Everyone,

First, I am posting this because, as far as I am aware, Apple does not offer
such a feature on the HomePod and I find this feature of Alexa and its
associated devices most useful.

Second, while the following article discusses Alexa Guard, know that there are
a great number of Alexa skills and routines that will enable your Amazon
speaker to listen for various sounds around the house such as running water,
beeping sounds, appliance alerts, etc. while you are at home. Also, you can
enable Alexa Guard while still at home as your smart speakers will continue to
function as expected. Personally, I use the listening routines to let me know
when my dryer finishes a cycle as the finish alert frequency is just too high
for me to hear unless I am standing right in front of the dryer.

Third, as of today, all aspects of Alexa Guard are 100% VoiceOver accessible.

I hope you find the following article useful and that it will serve as a
gateway to even more accessibility for us all.

Smart Security: How to Protect Your Home With Alexa Guard Amazon's Alexa Guard
feature can help keep your home safe when you're away.
Here's how to turn your smart speaker into a home security device.
By Lance Whitney

If you own an Amazon Echo, you can protect your home with a feature called
Alexa Guard. When this option is enabled, Alexa will send you notifications if
your Echo detects certain sounds-like smoke alarms or breaking glass-and will
then let you listen to any sounds that raised the red flag.
With connected smart lights, Alexa Guard can also turn the lights on and off to
make it seem as if someone is home. While the free version of Alexa Guard can't
actually contact emergency services in the event of an emergency, Smart Alerts
can be sent to certain smart home security system providers, such as Ring and
ADT.

Alexa Guard is compatible with the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo
Studio. If you want your Echo to detect the sounds of smoke alarms or carbon
monoxide detectors, you will need alarms capable of producing audible tones.

The Echo device must also be positioned close enough to the alarm that the
sound can be detected. Amazon recommends testing this out by positioning your
Echo and then pressing the test button on your alarm and seeing if Alexa Guard
detects the sound.

Set Up Alexa Guard

Before you can enable Alexa Guard, you must make sure you've added at least one
Echo device to your account, which you do through the Alexa app. After that's
done, open the app on your device and tap the More icon. Go to Settings > Guard
and select the Set Up Sound Detection button.

Make sure the switches for Smoke & CO Alarm Sounds and Glass Break are enabled,
assuming you want Guard to alert you to the sound of either event.
Tap Confirm, and all your supported Echo devices will be selected for sound
detection. Tap OK and a confirmation screen tells you that Guard is set up and
ready to use.

You can now activate Guard a few ways. At the Guard screen in the Alexa app,
tap the Home button to change it to Away. Otherwise, say "Alexa, I'm leaving."
Alexa says goodbye and tells you that Guard has been activated.

If Alexa Guard detects the sound of breaking glass or an alarm, you'll receive
a Smart Alert on your mobile device and smartwatch. You can then play the
recording to hear the sound. Alexa asks you to confirm if this was the sound of
glass breaking or an alarm. Alexa then asks if this is an emergency situation.

You can also drop in on your Echo and listen to the surrounding area for any
noise in case someone has broken in. And for those of you who use ADT Pulse,
ADT Control, or Ring Alarm home security systems, Alexa Guard can automatically
alert the security company if it detects the sound of broken glass or alarm
tones.

You can also use Alexa Guard to turn the lights on and off to make it seem as
if someone is home. To set this up, connect and pair a compatible smart light
or plug with your Echo. In the Alexa app, tap Away Lighting. Turn on the
switch, then check the smart lights that want to activate for

2022-12-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Chris,

It sounds as though you have quite an excellent setup in your home.

Not to engage in a debate but the thing about Alexa Guard and the various
skills and routines available via Amazon is that no external censors are
required in order to use many of the amazing features of Alexa. To get
started, one need spend only about $40 in order to purchase an Echo Dot, 4th
generation. However, one can use any Echo Dot including the second and third
generation units, also. I believe the cost of a new third gen Dot is about $14.

For those living in apartments or other rental units, who may not have the
option to install external censors, I think Alexa is an excellent VoiceOver
accessible option to explore.

Hi Mark,

I do not have any Alexa accessories to know what you are referring to exactly.
However, it sounds to me that it is similar to the apple home kit. With the
Apple home kit you can do a lot of the things you describe, provided that you
have the accessories needed. With the apple home kit you can do automation to
be notified when the motion sensor detects motion, and you will be able to
automate a sound alarm to play a siren alarm if the windows or doors are
opened, provided that you put contact sensors on the doors and windows. You can
also make an automation to turn up or down the heat when the temperature sensor
reaches a certain degree. You can do an automation to shutdown the water if the
water leek sensor detects any water leak.

The problem is that the apple home kit compatible sensors are generally more
expensive than the Alexa compatible accessories. If you have smart lights
installed in your home, you can ask Siri to turn them on or off or change the
light colors.

In my home, I have contact sensors on all of my windows, and I have motion
sensors in the ground floor. All of them have automation to sound a very loud
alarm through my home pod minis once they detect motion or someone attempts to
open my door or windows. I also have vibration sensors on my backdoor with an
automation to trigger the siren alarm if someone tries to break the glass of my
backdoor.

These are just few examples of what you can do with the Apple Home kit if you
have Home Pod Mini or Apple TV to act as a hub.

Cheers,

Re: Smart Security: How to Protect Your Home With Alexa Guard, PC Magazine

2022-12-15 Thread Cris Ali

Hi Mark,

I do not have any Alexa accessories to know what you are referring to
exactly. However, it sounds to me that it is similar to the apple home
kit. With the Apple home kit you can do a lot of the things you
describe, provided that you have the accessories needed. With the apple
home kit you can do automation to be notified when the motion sensor
detects motion, and you will be able to automate a sound alarm to play a
siren alarm if the windows or doors are opened, provided that you put
contact sensors on the doors and windows. You can also make an
automation to turn up or down the heat when the temperature sensor
reaches a certain degree. You can do an automation to shutdown the water
if the water leek sensor detects any water leak.

The problem is that the apple home kit compatible sensors are generally
more expensive than the Alexa compatible accessories. If you have smart
lights installed in your home, you can ask Siri to turn them on or off
or change the light colors.

In my home, I have contact sensors on all of my windows, and I have
motion sensors in the ground floor. All of them have automation to sound
a very loud alarm through my home pod minis once they detect motion or
someone attempts to open my door or windows. I also have vibration
sensors on my backdoor with an automation to trigger the siren alarm if
someone tries to break the glass of my backdoor.

These are just few examples of what you can do with the Apple Home kit
if you have Home Pod Mini or Apple TV to act as a hub.

Cheers,

Hello Everyone,

First, I am posting this because, as far as I am aware, Apple does not offer
such a feature on the HomePod and I find this feature of Alexa and its

Second, while the following article discusses Alexa Guard, know that there
are a great number of Alexa skills and routines that will enable your Amazon
speaker to listen for various sounds around the house such as running water,
beeping sounds, appliance alerts, etc. while you are at home. Also, you can
enable Alexa Guard while still at home as your smart speakers will continue
to function as expected. Personally, I use the listening routines to let me
know when my dryer finishes a cycle as the finish alert frequency is just
too high for me to hear unless I am standing right in front of the dryer.

Third, as of today, all aspects of Alexa Guard are 100% VoiceOver
accessible.

I hope you find the following article useful and that it will serve as a
gateway to even more accessibility for us all.

Smart Security: How to Protect Your Home With Alexa Guard
Amazon's Alexa Guard feature can help keep your home safe when you're away.
Here's how to turn your smart speaker into a home security device.
By Lance Whitney

If you own an Amazon Echo, you can protect your home with a feature called
Alexa Guard. When this option is enabled, Alexa will send you notifications
if your Echo detects certain sounds-like smoke alarms or breaking glass-and
will then let you listen to any sounds that raised the red flag.
With connected smart lights, Alexa Guard can also turn the lights on and off
to make it seem as if someone is home. While the free version of Alexa Guard
can't actually contact emergency services in the event of an emergency,
Smart Alerts can be sent to certain smart home security system providers,
such as Ring and ADT.

Alexa Guard is compatible with the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and
Echo Studio. If you want your Echo to detect the sounds of smoke alarms or
carbon monoxide detectors, you will need alarms capable of producing audible
tones.

The Echo device must also be positioned close enough to the alarm that the
sound can be detected. Amazon recommends testing this out by positioning
your Echo and then pressing the test button on your alarm and seeing if
Alexa Guard detects the sound.

Set Up Alexa Guard

Before you can enable Alexa Guard, you must make sure you've added at least

one Echo device to your account, which you do through the Alexa app. After
that's done, open the app on your device and tap the More icon. Go to
Settings > Guard and select the Set Up Sound Detection button.

Make sure the switches for Smoke & CO Alarm Sounds and Glass Break are

enabled, assuming you want Guard to alert you to the sound of either event.
Tap Confirm, and all your supported Echo devices will be selected for sound
detection. Tap OK and a confirmation screen tells you that Guard is set up
and ready to use.

You can now activate Guard a few ways. At the Guard screen in the Alexa app,

tap the Home button to change it to Away. Otherwise, say "Alexa, I'm
leaving." Alexa says goodbye and tells you that Guard has been activated.

If Alexa Guard detects the sound of breaking glass or an alarm, you'll

receive a Smart Alert on your mobile device and smartwatch. You can then
play the recording to hear th

Do I have to enable it somewhere or did Apple remove this feature after

Hi Davy,

I recently helped somebody with a very similar issue. It turned out that he had
accidentally relabeled the picker item that lets you switch between home screen
pages. If this is the case with you, the best thing to do is to put focus on
that picker, best way to find it is to either put focus on an item that's at
the very left of your dock or the last app on your home screen And either flick
left or right until hear it say page one of however many pages you have. Then,
invoke the item labeling feature, performing a two finger double tap and hold,
then if what you are hearing said all the time appears in that edit field,
flick right till you hear clear text, then double tap to activate, then hit
save. That should fix this for you. Hope that helps.

Re: Are my airPods charging? How to tell

2022-12-15 Thread Kimberly
My AirPods are second generation. When I go to the today screen, it doesn’t
give me the option to add a widget for batteries. There are only maybe a half a
dozen widgets available and battery is not one of them.

RE: Are my air Pods charging? How to tell

Hi.

I don't know if this will work, but it does with my Apple Watch. Ask Siri for
the Airpod battery level.

Hope this works.

RE: Share Sheet in iOS 16.2 Is Different

2022-12-15 Thread Richard Turner
If you double tap More, and find Voice Dream Reader and the insert activity
button just before it if you are flicking left to Right, double tap and then
you can find it in the share sheet from then on.
And, while there, after inserting the Voice Dream "activity" you can double tap
and hold on it and drag it up or down to reposition it where you want it.

I know I saw messages about this in here recently, but because I hadn't updated
to iOS 16.2, their relevance escaped me. But when I did, which was just
yesterday, I discovered that Voice Dream Reader is no longer available on the
share sheet for ZIP files. I've gotten around it by adding those ZIP archived
audio things through VDR, but that has presented its own problem--namely, once
I'm in the list of files I want to add and have added them, how do I get out
and back to VDR's main screen? There's no "Back" button anywhere. So I guess I
have two problems. Oy! Any help grately appreciated.

Are my airPods charging? How to tell

2022-12-15 Thread Kimberly Gardner
Hello,

As a blind person, is there any way for me to tell whether my airPods
are charging? When I look at them under settings all I see is the
status at the time I plugged them in. I'm guessing there's a light on
the case, but is there some other way to know?

Thanks

Re: accidentally labeled something weird and cannot find where

2022-12-15 Thread Julian

A couple odd things going on with iOS 16.2

2022-12-15 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I'm not sure if this is a Voiceover thing or not, but two things are happening
on my iPhone 13 Pro Max that are odd.

The first one happens if I try to use Siri to open an app. I have an unlock
code on my phone, so what should happen is I tell Siri to open settings, and
then I enter the unlock code to get there. What's happening is I tell my phone
to open whatever, Voiceover informs me to enter the unlock code, then the time
is announced, and there is no unlock screen. What's happening is the unlock
code entry screen appears, immediately followed by the lock screen. What I end
up doing is sliding my finger up the screen, and the unlock code entry screen
sticks. Anyone else running into this?

The other one is when I get a call. I have Voiceover announce who's calling. I
received a call today, and there was no announcement for several seconds. I
thought it wasn't working.

Any thoughts? I'll try rebooting my phone to see if that fixes things.

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.

Kevin and Jilly

Since upgrading to 16.2 from iOS 15, I have noticed that Siri has

not what I want open messages, it thinks, I’m trying to send a message replying
to the message it just read, in which I was not at all interested. What the
heck has happened with Siri? It’s getting dumber, not smarter. Now it doesn’t
want to open the weather app either. It had some nonsense about dark sky, and
actions, and even though I said, no, I don’t want that, it just sat there.
What the heck good is it?
